Tabloid Nation

Posted 6/2/05 at 3:46pm by jamie

Can you pick out the highest impact headline

  1. Porn Sites May Get .XXX Suffix
  2. 'Runaway bride' gets probation
  3. President Was Waging War Before Congressional Authorization
  4. Photographer Crashes Into Lindsay Lohan

If you picked number three, then congratulations. And for your prize, you get
a Nation filled with news medias that will pick the remaining headlines as their
own.

It is a disappointing fact that our nation has fallen into the crave for
'tabloid' style headlines. With pop stars on trial, brides running from their
future husbands, and new involving pornography taking the grand stand in our
news today. It leaves you with a sense that the news media is acting like our
father, protecting us little Americans from the harsh reality that is out there
in the world. I mean if we had to face up to headlines that could implicate the
President in a scandal to wage war for false reasons, we might just break down.
We are a fragile people and thankfully we have the media giants to protect us
from stories our simple, tender minds could not handle hearing.

In fact the first amendment to our Constitution is close to non existent.
While we still have the freedom of speech and the freedom of press, the press is
scared to exercise that right, or face a sentence far worse than being detained
at Gitmo. God have mercy on them for reporting what would once be considered
'news'. If a member of the media has the audacity to report on something that
could be construed as negative press towards our White House, then they will be
labeled with that treasonous term of "LIBERAL".

MOMMY! My Principal is a terroist

Posted 6/2/05 at 4:24am by jamie

KOMO news in Des Moines, Iowa has reported that 57 year old Cecilia Beaman, a middle school principal, is now on the terrorist watch list. Mrs. Beamen did the unthinkable. She accidently misplaced a rounded edged butter knife. To make matters even worse, she committed this felonious act while chaperoning 37 middle school students on a trip.

Seems more and more, the people of this country are becoming the criminals, and the criminals are becoming the saints. At least it is that way in the eyes of the government. As you can see by the new Dubya quote generator, even our President can make a mistake. Why is it that people in this country can no longer make a simple error? Is it true that we are now resorting to criminalizing those who made a simple mistake? And, are we now guilty until proven innocent?

If all this is true, then I must say congratulations to the terroists that struck us on September 11, for they have won. President Bush has said time and time again that they hate us because of our freedoms. Well we continue to limit those freedoms more and more. If that is the true reason they hate us, then are we not admitting our loss in this war? Have we finally stripped away the rights that have made us a great nation because of the failing war effort.

This is another sign that it is time Americans to take back America. This is our country that our forefathers fought and died for. Our government, by trampling the rights of its citizens, is now acting in a way that our enemies would. That is intolerable.

Kudos to Chris Matthews

Posted 6/1/05 at 3:11pm by jamie

On May 31st edition of Hardball, Chris Matthews took on a couple hard right wing guests and in a sense, gave them the O'Reilly treatment. The first part occured while he was discussing the discovery of the identity of Deep Throat. During an interview with former Nixon aide Pat Buchanan, Chris was discussing the details surrounding the fall of former President Nixon. Thirty plus years later and Pat Buchanan is still defending tricky-dick by making this statement last night:

"The people who brought down—Nixon was brought down by people who were a hell of a lot worse than he was."

But Chris, following the styles of Bill O'Reilly (in a good sense), fired back with:

"OK. That‘s a theory"

Before going to commercial.

Later in the show, Chris had on Republican strategist Ed Rogers, who worked in the first Bush White House. During a discussion of the ripple effect Watergate had on future presidents, and how the trust the American people have in them has faded the following Mr. Rogers made the following statement:

"Well, there‘s certainly a spike in the dishonesty quotient around the Clinton presidency."

But chris didnt let that go without comment by stating:

"And you really believe we went to war over WMD?"

Good job Chris!. To read the full transcript of the show click here.

Bush - Version 3

Posted 6/1/05 at 2:44pm by jamie

The first President Bush, also what I like to call version 1, told Larry King in an interview on Tuesday that he would like to see his other son Jeb run for president "when the timing is right". He did how ever say that the timing now is not right.
This is could lead to one of the scariest dynasties this country has seen since the television series "Dynasty" in the 80's.
While he is not planning to run in the 2008 election, it shows that Democrats really need to pull together now and make a solid plan to take back over. We had a strong go during the Clinton years, but the press machine of the Republican party is a strong monster. I believe that the DNC under Howard Deans leadership will be able to strike back at the negative press the Republicans are good at generating. We can only hope.
Many people feel that the next Presidential election is too far off to even worry about, but in the world of politics you start campaigning the day you start your career as a politician and it does not end until you die. Even if you are not running you are still out there supporting other candidates and campaigning for them.
We need now, more than ever for citizens to stand up for the rights we are granted in the Constitution. Now is the time to start organizing and planning for 2008, as well as the 2006 Congressional elections. If we want to return our country to the proud democracy that was once envied the world over, then the Democrats must get back in control.

Amnesty Is Right When It Is Right For The Administration

Posted 6/1/05 at 12:57am by jamie

An interesting post was just published on crooksandliars.com comparing how we know dismiss Amnesty international reports, compared to two years ago when they were part of the gospel used in order to wage an attack on Saddam Hussein.
On March 27, 2003, Donald Rumsfeld had this to say in a Pentagon press conference:

Anyone who has read Amnesty International or any of the human rights
organizations about how the regime of Saddam Hussein treats his people, heck he
used chemicals on his own people as well as on his neighbor.

Of course this quote was made when we were only a little over a week into the Iraq war. Now when Amnesty International makes a statement criticizing the United States in regards to the treatment of detainees, the administration considers them as being not a credible source (see earlier blog entry).

So too sum it up, Amnesty International is a viable source of information if George is using it to push ahead with his personal agenda. When Amnesty International makes negative reports regarding the United States though, they are not viable. Can we come up with an international organization to rate the double standards a nations leader uses? I guarantee the United States would top that list!
