Jean Schmidt - The New Wicked Witch

Posted 7/31/05 at 6:11pm by jamie

I just finished watching a debate between Jean Schmidt and
Paul Hackett, the two running for the 2nd congressional seat of Ohio.
After seeing this, I really see the even darker, and more blinded side of the
Republican – Jean Schmidt.

Paul Hackett, who returned from Iraq this past spring, was
stationed in Fallujah helping to train Iraqi forces. As a Major in the Marines,
he has the inside perspective we need in Washington when it comes to this war.
He identified the problems facing the troops when it comes to training the
Iraqis and has suggestions on how to improve them.

Jean Schmidt on the other hand does not agree with her
opponent. She feels all Mr. Hackett is doing is parroting the Democrats points
of views on the war. She says this while continuously mimicking the President’s
address to the nation verbatim. She feels we are doing everything right and Iraq
is on course. Of course the fact that she attends the funerals of local fallen
soldiers makes her an expert on this matter, as she indirectly stated on
Hardball Friday Night (see the clip at
Crooks and Liars).

The most ironic part of the entire debate was on the issue
of social security. Paul Hackett sees a system that isn’t broken but rather
“bent”. He feels the biggest improvements would come in more responsibility of
our government not to use social security as a “slush fund”. He also stands firm
on the ground that the cap should be raised on social security since every
American has an obligation to its people.

The State of Iraq

Posted 7/31/05 at 5:59pm by jamie

Well this past week, we heard that Rumsfeld could be
looking at pulling troops out starting as early as next spring, effectively
setting a “timetable” which the President said would not be done. Rumsfeld also
went to Iraq to push the Iraqi government to speed up their work on developing a
democracy and securing their land. So now with that all said lets see how things
are going.

Today we learn about five US soldiers being killed in Iraq
in two separate incidents of roadside bombs. This brings the US total number of
soldiers killed in Iraq to 1796 per ICasualities.org.

We also learned on this day that Iraq is seeking an extra
month to finish authoring their constitution. Something that is sure to delay
troop withdrawals. Glad Rumsfeld went there and told them to hurry it up.

To make matters even worse, Sunni leaders were able to obtain a petition with
one million signatures asking for the immediate withdrawal of US and coalition
forces in Iraq. This was presented at a demonstration outside the Green Zone
yesterday in which approximately 1,000 Sunnis demonstrated.

Jean Schmidt - Lost in the Land of Make Believe

Posted 7/30/05 at 6:25pm by jamie

Last night I was watching Hardball. David Gregory was
filling in for Chris Mattews. During one of the last segments, Gregory had Jean
Schmidt on. Jean is the Republican running for Ohio’s second congressional
district in a special election this coming Tuesday. Her opponent is Democrat
Paul Hackett, a Marine Major who recently returned from duty in Iraq.

Cooks and Liars
has a clip from Hardball last night, which shows the kind of witch Hackett is up
against. Schmidt told Gregory that Hackett is just parroting Democrats like
Nancy Pelosi on his objections to the war. However, not long after that she
started citing her support for the war and it was almost verbatim from President
Bush’s speech. Gregory even called her on it, and she said she believes in it
which is why she says it. I guess it is ok for her to believe what someone says,
but not for her opponent.

Jean Schmidt is a totally delusional individual. She stated
during her interview that Saddam was not letting weapons inspectors into Iraq. I
wonder where the news got all those clips of the weapons inspectors in Iraq
destroying weapons then. This just shows that she has a total disconnect from
the reality of current events.

Please check out the
video,
especially if you live in this district and are undecided on who to vote for. Do
we want a person who served in Iraq to serve in Congress, or would we rather see
a person who blatantly lies about the precursors to the war in order to try and
swing votes?

Template Repair/Changes

Posted 7/30/05 at 4:54pm by jamie

Just to let everyone know, I made some small repairs to the template today. The expand/contract arrows where not working properly on the date header. Now if you wish to jump from one date to the next on the main page, just click the little arrow next to the date in the yellow box and it will collapse that day's posts down so that the previous day's posts will come up. Also if you contract either a single post or an entire day, the arrow that points to the right no longer has a blue background. Any other problems or areas of improvement are well appreciated. Please either email me at the link to the left or leave a comment.

Last week, I changed the archiving system around. Instead of displaying a list of links to archived pages, it now displays a calendar. This is a javascript function, so if you do not have javascript activated on your browser, then it will continue to display a list of archives.

Also at that same time, I installed a blog roll system. I am trying to keep it filled with progressive/liberal blogs. I currently have around 50 listed. If you have a liberal/progressive blog or know of one that is not listed, then please contact me so I can add it to the blog roll.

Anyone else using Blogger.com that would like to use some of the code from my template, please feel free to. If you need any help, then do not hesitate to contact me and I will help you as much as possible.

A Closer Look At Presidential Approval Ratings

Posted 7/30/05 at 5:52am by jamie

While we are not near the end of President Bush's time in the
Oval Office (very unfortunate), his latest approval rating shows him as being in
the dump. I decided to look at some previous polling data for past President's
and found some interesting numbers. While searching, the only resource I could
find was ABC who keeps a nice "poll vault" on their site. The following is the
approval rating of President's as they left office.

Bill Frist Is For Stem Cell Research.

Posted 7/29/05 at 9:52pm by jamie

Bill Frist broke away from the “good old boys” Republican Party today to say he supports stem-cell research. This turn of events have left people in shock, to say the least. This, needless to say, has become the dawn of attacks against the Senate Majority Leader.

"I think a candidate that, that-umm-believes in the destruction of life would have a very hard time appealing to the vast majority of the republicans in this party”, Tom Delay said today while showing his disapproval for Dr. Frist’s medical opinion. True Tom Delay is a man of high morals. He supports the businesses in Saipan. The very same companies that force women to work extremely long hours for little or no pay, while the ones that can not work are forced into prostitution (one was only 14 years old). Oh and if you are a working woman in Saipan and become pregnant, no problem, you will receive the mandated abortion. Sounds like Mr. Delay supports the destruction of life when it supports his financial interests.

Read this Reuters article for more details. I want to give a warm thanks to Dr. Frist however, for voting his conscience and not his political allies.

New Poll - No Hope for Bush!

Posted 7/29/05 at 7:17pm by jamie

A new Gallup CNN/USA Today poll has Bush at his lowest
approval rating yet. Only 44% of the polled people find his performance
acceptable while 51% disapprove. The better part of this poll is showing that he
is declining amongst the independents. That leads to a greater pickup of votes
for the Democrats come next fall when Senate mid-term elections are being held.

The full study can be found
here. It is interesting data to
read to see how the people of this country are now viewing our leadership. It
just shows us that there is need for a change in Washington, particularly on the
right side of the aisles!

George "The Bird" Bush

Posted 7/29/05 at 6:11pm by jamie

This week, President Bush decided to once again show his family values. While walking away from reporters, he did something that is starting to become a trade mark, he flipped them the middle finger.

I am not a prude by any means, but for the leader of the most powerful nation in the world to act this way really shows his mentality. Bush talks about family values and devotion to his religion, yet he finds humor in this show of discontent towards the media.

While some stand the ground of it “only being a finger”, others do find insult in it. Road rage has been caused by this gesture, and fights have broken out over it. It can be considered humorous or cute, but not when it is done by the President of the United States.

I am now waiting to hear stories about children getting kicked out of school for flipping the finger to their peers or teachers. I can hear their argument now. “The President does it”. This will lead to some very interesting arguments. Is the President not supposed to lead by example? Well this is his example.

Ambassador Appointment 101 - Lie to Senate

Posted 7/29/05 at 5:40pm by jamie

A day after the State Department reveals that John Bolton in fact did lie on his confirmation questionnaire in regards to being questioned in the last five years by any grand jury or governmental investigation, the White House started dropping more hints of giving him the recess appointment to the UN.

This shows the level that our administration is willing to sink to in order to damage our diplomatic position in the world today. We are faced with numerous obstacles and a war with no end in site. Bush’s way of handling this is to appoint a person to the UN who regularly practices bullying techniques and excessive acts of violence towards subordinates.

Under the law, if Bolton if given the recess appointment, then it will last until the next session of Senate which wont be until January of 2007. In a little over a year, this hot-tempered bully can certainly do some damage to the UN. I guess this goes to show you that if you want to get appointed, just lie to Senate!

Again its Florida! Again its Baptists!

Posted 7/28/05 at 11:55pm by jamie

Why is it the Baptists seem to always be the ones who start
controversy? This time it is from a Church in Florida and not the usual suspects
– Westmore Baptist Church in Kansas. From Science Daily:

Florida church speaks out against Islam

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 28 (UPI) -- A sign outside a
Jacksonville, Fla., church proclaims, "Islam is evil and believes in murder.
Jesus teaches peace."

The Rev. Gene Youngblood says the sign at the entrance of
First Conservative Baptist Church and the Conservative Theological Seminary
may be controversial but it has been researched and speaks the truth.

References to specific verses from the Koran and the
Bible accompany the statement, which Youngblood said are meant to serve as a
warning to society.

"I am of the opinion, based on enormous research of the
Muslims' own books, that Islam is the most vile, wicked, evil danger facing
the world today," Youngblood told the Jacksonville Times-Union. He said the
sign was inspired by this month's London terrorist bombings.

The church displayed a sign in 2003 declaring "Muhammad
approved murder." Youngblood runs a Web site -- www.truthsthatfree.com -- that
portrays what he considers to be the truth about Islam.

Muslims condemned the messages as hateful and ignorant
