Top U.S. military officer contradicts
his civilian boss

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The nation's top military man, Marine Gen. Peter Pace,
said American troops in Iraq have a duty to intercede and stop abuse of
prisoners by Iraqi security personnel.

When Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld contradicted Pace, the general
stood firm.

Rumsfeld told the general he believed Pace meant to say the U.S. soldiers
had to report the abuse, not stop it.

Pace stuck to his original statement.

The unusual exchange occurred during a discussion at a news conference
about the relationship between U.S. forces in Iraq and an Iraqi government
considered sovereign by the United States.

A questioner asked whether the United States and its allies might be
deemed responsible for preventing mistreatment of people under arrest in
Iraq, given that the U.S. and its allies train Iraqi forces.

"There are a lot of people involved in this, dozens of countries
trying to help train these Iraqi forces. Any instance of inhumane behavior
is obviously worrisome and harmful to them when that occurs," Rumsfeld said.
"Iraq knows, of certain knowledge, that they need the support of the
international community. And a good way to lose it is to make a practice of
something that is inconsistent with the values of the international
community."

Banned From The U.S. - New Address A .COM

Here is an interesting story about a blogger who has now found himself not
welcomed in the United States:

Bloggers have no privacy and should expect none—a lesson painfully
learned by a Canadian citizen who was recently turned away after U.S. border
guards Googled him and pored over his blog to discover where he lives.

Hossein Derakhshan, born in Tehran and now living in Toronto, posted
details of his border experience on his blog, which is titled Editor:
Myself. The blog is concerned with Iran, technology and pop culture.

Derakhshan is a freelance Web designer, journalist, and someone referred
to in the blogosphere as "one of the great pioneers of international
blogging and freedom of speech online."

He is also, ironically, a member of the advisory board to the Committee
to Protect Bloggers.

His blog -
Editor:Myself
- has a very detailed account of his experience at the border.
I suggest reading it as it gives a very detailed account of his ordeal at the
border crossing.

Perhaps we should start a movement to change the Statue of Liberty to read
"Middle Easterners need not apply"

Military Pays For Good Press In Iraq

Posted 11/30/05 at 4:27pm by jamie

It was just a couple months ago that we learned the Bush White House was
illegally paying someone to write and publish "puff pieces" promoting the
administrations' education agenda. Today we learn that the military has taken
the same course of action in Iraq.

WASHINGTON — As part of an information offensive in Iraq, the U.S.
military is secretly paying Iraqi newspapers to publish stories written by
American troops in an effort to burnish the image of the U.S. mission in
Iraq.

The articles, written by U.S. military "information operations" troops,
are translated into Arabic and placed in Baghdad newspapers with the help of
a defense contractor, according to U.S. military officials and documents
obtained by the Los Angeles Times.

Many of the articles are presented in the Iraqi press as unbiased news
accounts written and reported by independent journalists. The stories
trumpet the work of U.S. and Iraqi troops, denounce insurgents and tout
U.S.-led efforts to rebuild the country.

Though the articles are basically factual, they present only one side of
events and omit information that might reflect poorly on the U.S. or Iraqi
governments, officials said. Records and interviews indicate that the U.S.
has paid Iraqi newspapers to run dozens of such articles, with headlines
such as "Iraqis Insist on Living Despite Terrorism," since the effort began
this year.

Bush's Speech - Another Let Down

Posted 11/30/05 at 4:03pm by jamie

What a day. We have heard that the President is going to deliver this major
speech today about progress in Iraq and lay out a plan for ending this war.
Instead we got the same old rhetoric of "more of the same".

The White House has released a new guide entitled “National Strategy for
Victory in Iraq” which can be viewed

here
. I have quickly looked through it and it is basically Bush speeches put
into writing.

Think Progress
has this to say on the new propaganda booklet.

After two-and-a-half years and 2,110 U.S. troop fatalities, the Bush
administration released what it calls a “National Strategy for Victory in
Iraq” (NSVI). The problem is, it’s not a new strategy for success in Iraq,
it’s a public relations document. The strategy describes what has transpired
in Iraq to date as a resounding success and stubbornly refuses to establish
any standards for accountability. It dismisses serious problems such as the
dramatic increase in bombings as “metrics that the terrorists and insurgents
want the world to use.” Americans understand it’s time for a new course in
Iraq. Unfortunately, this document is little more than an extended
justification for a President “determined to stay his course.”

They have a very detailed analysis of this booklet and Bush's speech which
you can read
here.

Does Bush Feel Ethics Should Apply To The White House?

Posted 11/29/05 at 11:35pm by jamie

Bush publicly scolded Duke Cunningham today over his crimes of taking bribes
in exchange for government contracts. Of course Bush speak is nothing more than
hypocrisy in action:

"Any member of Congress, Republican or Democrat, must take their office
seriously and the ethics seriously," Bush said to reporters during a trip to
Texas.

Funny how he addressed ethics as being taken seriously in Congress. No
mention about the ethics problems surrounding his own administration and the
leak investigation. I wonder if Bush realizes the company involved in this
bribery scandal did some work in the White House including in his own office?

Government procurement records show that MZM, which Wade started in 1993,
did not report any revenue from prime contract awards until 2003. Most of
its revenue has come from the agreement the Pentagon just cut off. But
over the past three years it was also awarded several contracts, worth more
than $600,000, by the Executive Office of the President. They include a
$140,000 deal for office furniture in 2002 and several for unspecified
"intelligence services."

Let me guess - Bush will be a victim of Cunningham's scam on that one.

What is Diebold Hiding?

Posted 11/29/05 at 6:15pm by jamie

Diebold would rather loose business than disclose their software code as
required by North Carolina state law.

RALEIGH, N.C. Nov 28, 2005 — One of the nation's leading suppliers of
electronic voting machines may decide against selling new equipment in North
Carolina after a judge declined Monday to protect it from criminal
prosecution should it fail to disclose software code as required by state
law.

Diebold Inc., which makes automated teller machines and security and
voting equipment, is worried it could be charged with a felony if officials
determine the company failed to make all of its code some of which is owned
by third-party software firms, including Microsoft Corp. available for
examination by election officials in case of a voting mishap.

The requirement is part of the minimum voting equipment standards
approved by state lawmakers earlier this year following the loss of more
than 4,400 electronic ballots in Carteret County during the November 2004
election. The lost votes threw at least one close statewide race into
uncertainty for more than two months.

.

One of the reasons they are giving for not disclosing the code is because the
system operates on the Microsoft Window's operating system. They maintain they
can not give that code or all the programmers that worked on it. That is a valid
argument however I got a funny feeling it is not the Microsoft code they are
worried about but rather their actual code.

The Return Of Rove's Dark Cloud

Posted 11/28/05 at 6:19pm by jamie

According to Raw Story, testimony given by Karl Rove's aide could further his
chances of getting indicted in the outing of Valerie Plame.

The attorneys say that Rove’s former personal assistant, Susan B. Ralston
-- who was also a special assistant to President Bush -- testified in August
about why Cooper’s call to Rove was not logged. Ralston said it occurred
because Cooper had phoned in through the White House switchboard and was
then transferred to Rove’s office as opposed to calling Rove’s office
directly. As Rove’s assistant, Ralston screened Rove’s calls.

But those close to the probe tell RAW STORY that Fitzgerald obtained
documentary evidence showing that other unrelated calls transferred to
Rove’s office by the switchboard were logged. He then called Ralston back to
testify.

here
.

It is amazing that after two years evidence is still coming out. Considering
this information was not made available or discovered before could lead Rove
down the same path as Libby in obstruction and perjury charges. Raw Story is
saying Rove will not be exonerated from the charges but instead he will either
be indicted or offer a plea:

Two things are clear, the sources said: either Rove will agree to enter
into a plea deal with Fitzgerald or he will be charged with a crime, but he
will not be exonerated for the role he played in the leak.

According to the article, Fitzgerald is to present his new evidence to the
grand jury this week meaning we could see an indictment sometime within the next
couple weeks against Karl Rove.

Another Guilty Republican

Posted 11/28/05 at 6:06pm by jamie

Republican Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham has pleaded guilty in federal court
to income tax violations.

This  from the

AP
:

Rep. Cunningham Pleads Guilty

Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham pleaded guilty to conspiracy and tax
violations after an investigation of the California Republican's home sale.

Cunningham has been under investigation since his sale of his home to a
defense contractor at an apparently inflated price in 2003 attracted the
attention of federal investigators.

He made his plea known at a hearing in federal court in San Diego on
Monday.

Cunningham, 63, is an eight-term congressman and Vietnam War flying ace.

In November 2003, he sold his Del Mar, Calif., home to defense contractor
Mitchell Wade for $1,675,000. Wade put the house back on the market and sold
it after nearly a year for $975,000 — a loss of $700,000 in one of the
nation's hottest housing markets.

Cunningham and his wife, Nancy, used the proceeds from the sale to buy a
$2.55 million mansion in ritzy Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Wade also let Cunningham live rent-free on his yacht, the Duke Stir, at
the Capital Yacht Club. His firm, MZM Inc., donated generously to
Cunningham's campaigns.

Around the same time, MZM was winning valuable defense contracts at a
time when Cunningham sat on the House Appropriations subcommittee that
controls defense dollars. In 2004 the little-known company based in
Washington, D.C., tripled its revenue and nearly quadrupled its staff,
according to information posted on the company Web site.

As Our Ally Parts Ways

Posted 11/27/05 at 3:49pm by jamie

John Bolton is met with even more opposition in the U.N. now. This time he
has lost support for the U.N. reform he has been pushing and the loss this time
is a big one - Great Britain. This from today's

Telegraph
:

Britain has angered John Bolton, America's combative ambassador to the
United Nations, by breaking ranks with him over the need for reform.

The rare public disagreement between the two close allies comes as the
showdown over reforms at the UN's New York headquarters becomes increasingly
acrimonious.

Britain has rebuffed a Bolton move to join him in refusing to pass the
organisation's 2006 budget until member states approve wide-ranging
management reforms.

To the irritation of Mr Bolton, many developing nations are bitterly
opposed to changes that they claim are driven by American political
pressure. He suggested last week that talks on the 2006 and 2007 budgets
could be postponed as a means to overcome the trenchant resistance from the
"G77" bloc of developing countries. He also threatened that the United
States could seek an alternative to the UN for solving international
problems in future.

This of course is not the only strain right now from our number one war ally.
The memo last week that was released in a British newspaper which said Bush
wanted to bomb al Jazeera has sparked a controversial fire storm. The memo lead
to a gag order by the British Attorney General and has since sparked even more
outrage, some coming from Parliament.
