October Poll Wrap-Up

Posted 11/3/05 at 2:31am by jamie

October's poll dealt with your town's evacuation plan and if you felt it was
up to date. The results are as follows:

  • Definitely - 8% (2)
  • Possibly - 8% (2)
  • Not Sure - 44% (11)
  • No Way - 40% (10)

This was based on a total of 25 respondents.

It is shocking yet in a way comforting to see how many responded as no way.
Having a background in fire and life safety, I can safely say that you would be
shocked to see how out of date your town's evacuation plan most likely is. If
you are near your town hall, you should stop in and ask to see it just to make
sure they are updating it.

Factors affecting evacuation plans change on nearly a monthly basis. Roads
get closed or re-routed. Subdivisions can be built and nursing homes or
hospitals open and close. These all affect that evacuation plan. Most towns
actually write an evacuation plan then think "well that's done" and file it
away. This hurricane season should hopefully wake up most town leaders to this
lazy approach but I fear it won't. Take some time to check with your town public
safety department and make sure they are staying up to date on evacuation plans.

This month's poll has to do with the leak investigation. I want to get the
views of readers on how they compare it to Watergate. Please take a moment to

More Sliding Of The Approval Rating

Posted 11/3/05 at 2:21am by jamie

Its the first of the month and we will start getting glimpses into how the
public thinks of our President. The first look is not so good for him.

CBS has released their latest poll that
goes into the leak investigation and the approval of the President. His approval
has dropped even more and more people now view the leak as serious.

HOW IMPORTANT TO THE NATION IS THE CIA LEAK MATTER?

  • Great Importance: 51%
  • Some Importance: 35%
  • Little/No Importance 12%

CBS also compared this to the views of other scandals that have surrounded
the White House in recent history. Here is a table comparing the results.

Senate Lock Down - The Aftermath Day 1

Posted 11/2/05 at 7:03pm by jamie

Yesterday's lock down of Senate by Democrats has resparked an old, but not
forgotten controversy - the Downing Street Memos.

Republican's have repeatedly tried to dismiss the DSM as false information
saying that it was addressed in phase one of the intelligence report. Now that
Democrats have forced phase two to be complete, which will most likely bring the
DSM to the table in Senate.

One the same note, Murray Waas is reporting that the Democrats are possibly
going to push for a Senate Select Committee to investigate all the incidents
leading up to and involving the Iraq war. If such a committee is formed then it
will be along the lines of the Watergate and Church committees that have taken
place previously. Click

to read his excellent analysis of what is most likely to come.

The White House press briefing will begin in about 45 minutes and should be
heated after yesterday's events. I will report on it as soon as it concludes.

Return Of The Democrats

Rule 21 of the Senate mandates that any time an issue is to be brought up on
the Senate floor that could reveal classified information that the cameras be
shut off, no electronic recording devices in the room and no staffers in the
room. It is done so to protect national security.

That is the reason Harry Reid called for a rule 21 hearing into the pre-war
intelligence failures in Iraq. It is also welcomed sign to Democrats around the
country that we will no longer stand by while the Republicans hijack our nation

.Republicans don't feel the same. They are calling it a political stunt to
shut down Senate. Bill Frist even complained about the courtesies involved in
this move by Senator Reid. Bill Frist told reporters that this kind of lack of
decency has never been done in either house of Congress. I guess he considers
illegally extending votes by the Republicans in the House ethically sound
actions.

Senate has come to an agreement in this situation. A committee of 6 Senators,
three from each party, is being empanelled in order to look into the reasons why
"phase 2" of the intelligence committee's report on the failure of intelligence
leading to the Iraq war has been stalled. This committee is to report back to
Senate no later than November 14.

Pat Roberts, the chairman of the Senate intelligence committee stated that
they will hold hearings all next week to try and get this report concluded. The
initial phase of the report cited major failures in the pre-war intelligence of
Iraq's WMD program. Phase 2 is to look into the use of this failed data and see
if it was used to sway support for the invasion.

BREAKING: Senate In Closed Meetings Over Indictment And Intelligence

Posted 11/1/05 at 8:17pm by jamie

Harry Reid and the Democrats have made a strong stand today in the halls of
Senate and the Senate has now gone to closed door meetings to discuss the
indictment of Scooter Libby and the failure of intelligence for the war in Iraq.

Reid, speaking to Senate prior to this late afternoon development barked at
the members of Senate, namely the Republicans for failure to do their jobs in
oversight of the government and the enormous ethical and legal failures of the
White House.

This story is now developing, I will have more on it later.

Poor Wal-Mart Under Attack

Posted 11/1/05 at 5:50pm by jamie

Wal-Mart has launched a full blown damage control strategy to counter bad
press. In a

New York Times
article today, they describe a "war" room which is staffed by
past political strategist.

BENTONVILLE, Ark., Oct. 26 - Inside a stuffy, windowless room here,
veterans of the 2004 Bush and Kerry presidential campaigns sit, stand and
pace around six plastic folding tables. Open containers of pistachio nuts
and tropical trail mix compete for space with laptops and BlackBerries. CNN
flickers on a television in the corner.

The phone rings, and a 20-something woman answers. "Turn on Fox," she
yells, running up to the TV with a notepad. "This could be important."

A scene from a campaign war room? Well, sort of. It is a war room inside
the headquarters of Wal-Mart, the giant discount retailer that hopes to sell
a new, improved image to reluctant consumers.

Wal-Mart is taking a page from the modern political playbook. Under fire
from well-organized opponents who have hammered the retailer with criticisms
of its wages, health insurance and treatment of workers, Wal-Mart has
quietly recruited former presidential advisers, including Michael K. Deaver,
who was Ronald Reagan's image-meister, and Leslie Dach, one of Bill
Clinton's media consultants, to set up a rapid-response public relations
team in Arkansas.

Bush's Image Recovery Attempt

Posted 11/1/05 at 5:12pm by jamie

President Bush is still trying damage control from last weeks hit of
indictments. Today he outlined his $7.1 billion strategy for dealing with a
possible bird flu pandemic.

In his plan, he wants to stock pile enough vaccine for 20 million people and
offer liability protection from the manufacturers. Currently the only
manufacturer of a vaccine, Tamiflu, is Gilead Sciences.

Now to look deeper into why President Bush might be so interested in
protecting them from any civil liabilities that could come from their product.
This is from

CNN Money
:

NEW YORK (Fortune) - The prospect of a bird flu outbreak may be panicking
people around the globe, but it's proving to be very good news for Defense
Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other politically connected investors in
Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to
Tamiflu, the influenza remedy that's now the most-sought after drug in the
world.

Rumsfeld served as Gilead (Research)'s chairman from 1997 until he joined
the Bush administration in 2001, and he still holds a Gilead stake valued at
between $5 million and $25 million, according to federal financial
disclosures filed by Rumsfeld.

The forms don't reveal the exact number of shares Rumsfeld owns, but in
the past six months fears of a pandemic and the ensuing scramble for Tamiflu
have sent Gilead's stock from $35 to $47. That's made the Pentagon chief,
already one of the wealthiest members of the Bush cabinet, at least $1
million richer.

How Many Nations Can We Build?

Posted 11/1/05 at 4:18pm by jamie

In 2000, George Bush campaigned against the United States doing any nation
building missions. Even during the Wake Forest debate in October of 2000, Bush
spoke against any such actions by our country:

Q: Why not Africa? Why the Middle East? Why the Balkans but not Africa?

BUSH: Africa’s important. And we’ve got to do a lot of work in Africa to
promote democracy and trade. It’s an important continent. But there’s got to
be priorities. And the Middle East is a priority for a lot of reasons as is
Europe and the Far East, and our own hemisphere. Those are my four top
priorities should I be the president. It’s not to say we won’t be engaged
[in Africa], and working hard to get other nations to come together to
prevent atrocity [like in Rwanda]. I thought the best example of handling a
[genocide] situation was East Timor when we provided logistical support to
the Australians; support that only we can provide. I thought that was a good
model. But we can’t be all things to all people in the world. I am worried
about over-committing our military around the world. I want to be judicious
in its use. I don’t think nation-building missions are worthwhile.

Since that time we have seen the United States involved in two large scale
nation rebuilding exercises. One being Afghanistan and the other Iraq. This is
just an example of one of the many lies George Bush has told the American people
and one that is being expanded upon.
