More Good News For Dems

Posted 4/25/06 at 3:22pm by jamie

When the GOP starts losing the support of the money makers then they are in serious trouble. That is exactly what is happening now:

-- Democrats outdid Republicans last year in attracting political donations from investment banks, brokerages and fund managers for the first time since 1994, helped by support from hedge funds and companies such as Merrill Lynch & Co.

Democrats got $13.6 million, or 52 percent of the financial industry's $26.3 million in political donations in 2005, said the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan Washington group that researches the influence of money on elections and public policy. In the two years leading up to the 2004 presidential election, Republicans received 52 percent of the $91.6 million given by the industry.

``Wall Street wants change'' on issues such as the Iraq war and the budget deficit, said James Torrey, chairman of the Torrey Funds, which manages about $1 billion. ``I'm finding people who are registered Republicans who are saying to me, `what can I do to help?'''

The investors apparently don't see the economy as robust as Bush makes it out to be. Since these are the big money men then that should send a sign to the rest of America that we need change. I can't overstate how good of news this is for the Democrats. Things are lining up more and more like 1994.

Looking Like Snow In The White House

Posted 4/25/06 at 1:11pm by jamie

He will still be the mouthpiece of the administration, the only difference is he will now be in Scott McClellan's office:

Sources close to the White House said Monday that Fox anchor Tony Snow is likely to accept the job as White House press secretary, succeeding Scott McClellan.

The sources said they expect him to announce his decision within the next few days.

A source familiar with the discussions said Monday that newly appointed Chief of Staff Josh Bolten asked Snow to make a decision by early this week.

Two sources familiar with the discussions said Bolten wanted to fill the post this week, as early as Tuesday.

Sources familiar with Snow's deliberations said he has been focusing on family, finances and his health.

It will be really interesting to see how long old Tony can handle this job. True he does have a good resume for it. Working for Fox has given him some great practice at lying to the American people. I just wonder now if Tony will ask Storm Front to remove his piece. That could really cost the administration some minority votes if it got out.

Iraq Needs More Security Forces

Posted 4/24/06 at 6:50pm by jamie

While Bush is still beating his war drums for Iran, we still got a growing problem in Iraq and it is getting worse:

Thirty-two bodies of Iraqi police and security forces recruits were discovered in two areas of Baghdad on Monday, Interior Ministry sources said.

All 32 were from the town of Ramadi in the insurgent heartland of Anbar province, which is fiercely opposed to the government, the sources said.

One group of 17 were kidnapped and then shot dead after they signed up for the police force one week ago. They were found in the Baghdady district of the capital.

We need to seriously ask ourselves "how many messes are we going to let Bush leave for the next President?" Even more so - Congress needs to ask this question. Bush is determined to destroy not only America, but also the world before leaving office. He feels he can do this because he hears voices in his head he calls "God".

Distancing From Bush

Posted 4/24/06 at 4:30pm by jamie

Salon has a very interesting article about one of my Senators - Mike DeWine. DeWine is facing a tough re-election this year against Sherrod Brown and it looks like he is trying to distance himself from the standard GOP talking points even more:

With his neatly combed brown hair, button-down white shirts, middle-aged slouch and soft-spoken manner, Mike DeWine has probably never inspired a TV booker for a Sunday morning talk show to shout excitedly, "We've got the senior Ohio Republican senator. He's hot!" As local Democratic political strategist Greg Haas puts it with grudging respect, "Mike DeWine is Ohio -- a little understated."

So when I sat down with DeWine last Tuesday in suburban Worthington to talk about his tricky reelection battle against antiwar Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown, I was not expecting fireworks. But the sky rockets went off as soon as the topic turned to embattled Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

"Rumsfeld has made some very serious mistakes," DeWine declared, repeating his verdict for emphasis. "Very serious mistakes. I think history will judge him very harshly." Just to make sure that I was really hearing one of the harshest attacks yet on Rumsfeld by a Republican senator, I asked, "Which mistakes?" DeWine, who has never repented his 2002 vote for the Iraq war, gave me a what-planet-are-you-on look before responding, "Clearly not enough troops going in [to Iraq]. That was the biggest mistake. And a lot of mistakes would be covered under that."

The problem is that DeWine has blindly supported this administration through thick and thin until now. He even recommended making the NSA wiretaps legal. Now that there is a strong candidate that could remove him from office this Fall, he is scared shit-less. I wonder if Bush and the GOP will cut his support for saying such things?

Can We Have Hearings About The Phone Jamming?

Posted 4/24/06 at 4:14pm by jamie

Bloomberg is reporting that the investigation into the phone jamming scandal is now widening:

To Republicans, the New Hampshire phone-jamming incident is an isolated case of political dirty tricks that took place more than three years ago.

To Democrats, it's a scandal with echoes of Watergate that may reach all the way to the White House.

Republican leaders are facing questions stemming from a criminal case involving efforts to suppress voter turnout in a U.S. Senate election in the state in 2002. Republican John Sununu won that race over Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, helping Republicans retake control of the Senate.

The facts, on the surface at least, are suspicious: dozens of phone calls to the White House by a man later convicted in the case; the national Republican Party agreeing to pay more than $2.5 million in legal bills; phones jammed on Election Day, not only of Democrats but of a firefighters' group, in the first U.S. congressional elections since the Sept. 11 attacks. Democrats say that disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff may even be involved.

If the tables were turned and it was Democrats doing this with a Democrat in the White House you can be damn sure the Republicans would be calling for investigations and Congressional hearings. This is our democracy we are talking about here and it does demand that amount of attention. If the Republicans continue to ignore this incident then it proves they have zero respect for what our country is and stands for.

ACTION ALERT: Request Fitzgerald Gets More Powers

Posted 4/23/06 at 11:57pm by jamie

Writing on behalf of his One America political action committee, former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards sent an email Saturday seeking signatories in an effort to expand the powers of Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald to investigate President Bush's role in the strategic leaking of information related to Iraq.

In the form letter on Edwards' site, he writes, "I urge you to extend Mr. Fitzgerald's charter to include the behavior of the President in this disgraceful affair."

The letter to supporters, while unlikely to influence the investigation, signals that Edwards continues to remain active on the political scene, and could indicate an effort to advance a 2008 presidential run.

Via Raw Story.

If Edwards is doing this to position himself for a run in 2008 or not is not at issue here. Edwards has come up with a very good plan - let the man who is already knee deep in investigating the Iraqi intelligence failure investigate it even further. We know for a fact Bush manipulated and/or ignored intelligence that would have kept us from going to war. It is time he be investigated and put on trial for it. You can sign Edwards letter here. I have also added it to the Get Active section on the left.

The Boogey Man Returns

Posted 4/23/06 at 2:01pm by jamie

Now here is something interesting - the Russians seem to have a better grip on American politics than most Americans do. They have called out the Republican party for what it is - fear mongers:

An influential Russian newspaper here accused US President George W. Bush's Republican Party of deliberately raising tension with Russia to boost its own sagging popularity ahead of elections.

"Russia's success at the Saint Petersburg G8 summit depends on US domestic politics," the liberal business daily Vedomosti said in a front-page commentary, referring to the Group of Eight nations meeting scheduled for July.

"This unpleasant situation became obvious during the past week" as Bush's Republican administration, looking ahead to autumn congressional elections, continued taking "energetic steps to resurrect its shaky popularity" ratings, the newspaper said.

"One of these steps is to tighten policy on Russia."

The paper noted that the G8 summit agenda is set by member countries and this year centers on energy security, education and fighting infectious diseases.

Just think about it. During the 2004 election Bush kept beating those "fear drums". He tried to make Americans fear that Osama was still on our door step and even backed that fear up with raising the terror level on bogus claims.

Now terrorism isn't enough to scare the Americans into voting for Republicans. So what is the alternative. Here we go - lets relive the cold war. Lets make the Americans fear that there are Russians out there ready to strike us at any minute, as well as Osama.

Bush's Mis-Adminstration Making Headlines In London

Posted 4/23/06 at 2:58am by jamie

Looks like the Republicans are eating their young old again:

REPUBLICANS are urging President George W Bush to dump Dick Cheney as vice-president and replace him with Condoleezza Rice if he is serious about presenting a new face to the jaded American public. They believe that only the sacrifice of one or more of the big beasts of the jungle, such as Cheney or Donald Rumsfeld, the defence secretary, will convince voters that Bush understands the need for a fresh start.

The jittery Republicans claim Bush’s mini-White House reshuffle last week will do nothing to forestall the threat of losing control of Congress in the November mid-term elections.

Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard magazine and author of Rebel in Chief, a sympathetic new biography of Bush, said: “There are going to have to be sweeping personnel changes if people are going to take a second look at the Bush presidency.”

Barnes, who is close to the White House, said he believed Cheney would be willing to stand down in order to help Bush. “It’s unlike Bush to dump somebody whom he likes and respects,” he cautioned. “But the president needs to do something shocking and dramatic such as putting in Condoleezza Rice.”

I think dumping Cheney is a great idea. Then after that Bush should dump Bush, but not before dumping Condi, Rumsfeld, John Bolton and everyone else. A little shake up in the White House is not going to fix the problems we have in America. What it is going to do is by time for Bush before the next President has to come in and repair a devastation.

Some Thoughts On Earth Day

Cross posted at Firegodlake

Today is Earth Day and what a better way for Bush to celebrate it then by trying to exploit it. He did so in his weekly radio address:

Saturday is Earth Day, and many of you are asking how we can meet our growing energy needs while protecting our environment. The key is technology. So I have proposed the Advanced Energy Initiative to change the way we power our homes, businesses, and cars. I will visit the California Fuel Cell Partnership to take a closer look at hydrogen fuel cells, one of the exciting new technologies supported by my initiative. These fuel cells have the potential to revolutionize the way we power our cars by giving us vehicles that will emit no pollution and will be more efficient than gas-powered cars.

My Advanced Energy Initiative will also help improve hybrid vehicles -- cars and trucks that run partly on electricity and help drivers save gas. We're funding research into a new generation of plug-in hybrid vehicles that could be recharged in electrical outlets and could allow many drivers to make their daily commute using no gasoline.

By developing these and other new sources of clean renewable energy like ethanol, we will continue growing our economy, reduce energy prices and protect our environment, and make America less dependent on foreign oil.

This is politicking at its worst. The Republicans have always had a great way of playing with words to make something sound like that it isn't. "No Child Left Behind" as a way to keep the majority of students from obtaining higher education. "Clear Skies Initiative" meaning the best way to clear the skies is by killing all the birds that fly in them using pollution.. These are just a couple of examples and  "Advanced Energy Initiative" is no different.
