Drudge At It Again

Posted 5/22/06 at 4:30pm by jamie

Raw Story has uncovered this little piece about the DNC going after Drudge:

The Democratic National Committee consulted its attorneys Monday after a story posted by online heavyweight Matt Drudge claimed that DNC chairman Howard Dean intervened in New Orleans' recent mayoral race, RAW STORY can reveal.

In an exclusive Sunday evening, The Drudge Report claimed that Dean threw his support behind mayoral candidate and sitting Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu (D-LA) over sitting mayor Ray Nagin. DNC Communications director Karen Finney said the report was "absolutely false."

The "exclusive" that they are talking about is a typical Drudge story that says "developing" at the bottom. If the DNC's claims are true (and I believe they are) then Matt Drudge should be forced to issue a public retraction. It is not like this is some isolated incident, he constantly alters news (much like NewsMax) to appeal to his base. This however appears to be more than altering, but rather fabricating. Drudge is the kind that give blogs a bad name.

Koppel Has A Plan

Posted 5/22/06 at 1:55pm by jamie

Ted Koppel has sounded off about the current state of our military and he brings up some excellent points:

Little known to the American public, there are some 50,000 private contractors in Iraq, providing support for the U.S. military, among other activities. So why not go all the way, argues Ted Koppel in a New York Times op-ed on Monday, and form a real "mercenary army"?

Such a move involving what he calls "latter-day Hessians" would represent, he writes, "the inevitable response of a market economy to a host of seemingly intractable public policy and security problems."

It is make necessary by our "over-extended military" and inability of the United Nations to form adequate peace forces. Meanwhile, Americans business interests grow ever more active abroad in dangerous spots.

"Just as the all-volunteer military relieved the government of much of the political pressure that had accompanied the draft, so a rent-a-force, harnessing the privilege of every putative warrior to hire himself out for more than he could ever make in the direct service of Uncle Sam, might relieve us of an array of current political pressures," Kopple explains.

They have damn near done this already so they might as well go all out. We have all heard stories about people in the Army who are suppose to be cooks. They end up going to Iraq to find themselves not cooking but rather on the front line (same goes for motor pool, clerks, etc.). Why is this? Because we have sub-contracted out the functions that these people have been trained to do. Yes - Rumsfeld really knows how to run a military - NOT!

Natalie Maines to George Bush - "Your Not Owed Any Respect"

Posted 5/21/06 at 7:08pm by jamie

The Dixie Chicks new album, Taking The Long Way is due out tomorrow and along with it comes a nice article in Time about the controversy that put the Dixie Chicks in the national spolight as a strong anti-war voice (excepts from Huffington Post):

"I apologized for disrespecting the office of the President. But I don't feel that way anymore. I don't feel he is owed any respect whatsoever," Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines tells TIME's music critic Josh Tyrangiel, of her remark to a London audience in 2003: "Just so you know, we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." TIME's cover story, "Radical Chicks," hits newsstands Monday, May 22nd.

You can read the entire article at Time.com (subscription required) or the rest of the review at the HuffPo.

I would like to take a second to remind everyone to please support the new anti-war music and help send a message to the music executives that we want more of this. The best way is to call and request these songs on your local station and even better is by purchasing their albums. I have a list of current anti-war songs, which can easily be ordered through Amazon, on the right hand side of the page. Just click the link and it will take you to Amazon's page for that album. The more albums sold the more of this music we will see being released.

Republicans Losing Even More Support

Posted 5/21/06 at 5:00pm by jamie

Richard Viguerie is not a well known name unless your into politics. Here is a little background on him from Dkosopedia:

In an autobiographical note, Viguerie wrote that in 1961 he became executive secretary of the conservative youth group, Young Americans for Freedom. "Since 1965, owner of direct marketing/advertising companies such as American Target Advertising. Political/campaign strategist, activist and conservative spokesman and writer," he wrote.

"Pioneered political use of computerized direct mail. That technology was the Internet of its day: it enabled conservatives to get around liberals' dominance of the mass media; it allowed thousands of conservative candidates, organizations and causes to get their messages to grassroots Americans," he wrote.[1]

Viguerie founded Conservative Digest magazine in 1975 and served as its publisher for ten years.[2]

Basically Viguerie is conservatism and is somewhat a godfather of modern conservatism. What is even more interesting is the piece he wrote in today's Washington Post:

As a candidate in 2000, George W. Bush was a Rorschach test. Country Club Republicans saw him as another George H.W. Bush; some conservatives, thinking wishfully, saw him as another Ronald Reagan. He called himself a "compassionate conservative," which meant whatever one wanted it to mean. Experts from across the party's spectrum were flown to Austin to brief Bush and reported back: "He's one of us."

What A Robust Economy!

Posted 5/21/06 at 12:38am by jamie

Every time Bush talks about our "robust and strong" economy, I just want to puke. He acts like if he says it enough then it must be true. Of course we all know Bush doesn't read the papers to see articles like this:

If you want to measure the strength of the city, you might consider a statistic released this week: The number of families seeking food from the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry has increased 78 percent over the last year.

"Families are feeling a pinch right now from a lot of different directions. Minimum wage has not increased in years, and I think this is just one sign of how the economy is going for Cincinnati residents," said Julie Rack, of St. Vincent DePaul.

The increased demand is putting a strain on the pantry's supply.

"With summer coming up and children being out of school .... people are going to need more food," Rack said.

Another reason to work even harder? The largest group that the food bank serves is those children who won't be getting food from schools' breakfast and lunch programs.

"People with children will do anything they can to feed their children, pride aside," Rack said.

This is a story I didn't have to go hunting for - it found me. This is a local news story for the Cincinnati Area. What is even more amazing is the fact that this article came out on the same day Bush was speaking less than 10 miles from the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry and had this to say:

Get Over It Bush Backers - Murtha Was Right!

Posted 5/19/06 at 1:24pm by jamie

Since John Murtha became outspoken against the Iraq War last fall, conservatives could not wait to "swift boat" him. Now we are finding out one of the examples he used as a problem in Iraq is in fact true:

US lawmaker and former Marine colonel accused US Marines of killing innocent Iraqi civilians after a Marine comrade had been killed by a roadside bomb.

"Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood," John Murtha told reporters. The November 19 incident occurred in Haditha, Iraq.

"There was no firefight" that led to the shootings at close range, the Vietnam war veteran said, denying early official accounts, which said that a roadside bomb had killed the Iraqis.

"There were no (roadside bombs) that killed these innocent people," he said.

Time magazine reported the shootings on March 27, based on an Iraqi human rights group and locals, who said that 15 unarmed Iraqis died, including women and children, when Marines barged into their home throwing grenades and shooting.

"It's much worse than reported in Time magazine," Murtha said.

At least three Marine officers are under official investigation, and no report has been released, Army Times said Tuesday.

Now this story came out two days ago. When it was released, I posted it as a news item but decided to hold off on blogging about it because I wanted to give the right wing blogs a couple of days to comment on it. To my shock (not really), the right has been relatively quiet on this story. I found one diary on RedState that addressed it (somewhat):

Feingold's Statement

Posted 5/19/06 at 12:39am by jamie

Russ Feingold has issued the following statement regarding his walk out of today's hearings on the Constitutional Amendment on Marriage:

“Today’s markup of the constitutional amendment concerning marriage, in a small room off the Senate floor with only a handful of people other than Senators and their staffs present, was an affront to the Constitution. I objected to its consideration in such an inappropriate setting and refused to help make a quorum. I am deeply disappointed that the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee went forward with the markup over my objection. Unfortunately, the Majority Leader has set a politically motivated schedule for floor consideration of this measure that the Chairman felt compelled to follow, even though he says he opposes the amendment.

Constitutional amendments deserve the most careful and deliberate consideration of any matter that comes before the Senate. In addition to hearings and a subcommittee markup, such a measure should be considered by the Judiciary Committee in the light of day, open to the press and the public, with cameras present so that the whole country can see what is done. Open and deliberate debate on such an important matter cannot take place in a setting such as the one chosen by the Chairman of the Committee today.

The Constitution of the United States is an historic guarantee of individual freedom. It has served as a beacon of hope, an example to people around the world who yearn to be free and to live their lives without government interference in their most basic human decisions. I took an oath when I joined this body to support and defend the Constitution. I will continue to fight this mean-spirited, divisive, poorly drafted, and misguided amendment when it comes to the Senate floor.”

More Use Of The IRS Political Machine

Posted 5/18/06 at 8:39pm by jamie

While they are not concerned with churches that support Republican candidates or tell members to leave their church if they voted for Kerry, the Republicans sure do worry about the NAACP:

Several Republican members of Congress sent letters to the Internal Revenue Service questioning whether the NAACP had veered into political advocacy and asked for an investigation into its tax-exempt status, according to documents released by the civil rights organization.

The IRS began looking into the Baltimore-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People about a month before the 2004 presidential election after a speech by NAACP Chairman Julian Bond that was largely critical of President Bush's policies.

Political campaigning is prohibited under the NAACP's tax-exempt status. The IRS said its inquiry would focus on whether Bond's speech was too political, and that the investigation is among dozens into the activities of tax-exempt groups during the 2004 election season.

The NAACP received more than 500 pages of documents the IRS has gathered to begin its inquiry. The group had made requests under the Freedom of Information Act and provided the documents to The (Baltimore) Sun.

Well I guess when Bush only gets a 9% approval from black voters, then why should they care. After all, using the IRS as their "political henchmen" is a tactic very common in the GOP.

Grow Some Balls America!

Posted 5/18/06 at 6:35pm by jamie

We heard that Osama attacked us because "they hate us for our freedoms". Now a real President would have gone out and done what he could to protect those freedoms and flaunt them in the face of our attackers. Instead Bush exposed a pussified America and used it to shred our civil liberties. Now we hear the Americans think this is ok:

A furor over the trade-off between civil liberties and security in the fight against terrorism is raging in the U.S. Congress, think tanks and the media, but the heated debate leaves much of America cold.

In Washington, attention was focused on Senate confirmation hearings of Gen. Michael Hayden, the nominee for CIA chief who ran a domestic spying program, and on a report last week that the government gathered phone records of millions of Americans.

But the debate was unlikely to change many minds in a country where opinion polls show more than half of the people believe that sacrificing some rights is a necessary price to pay for safety after the September 11 attacks.

"People look at it through the lens of 9/11 and understand that we haven't been attacked since then and that there are reasons for that other than just good luck," said Mac Thrower, editorial page editor at The Paducah Sun in Kentucky.

"I think for that reason there's pretty strong support for what the president is doing in that area, not a great deal of concern about a threat to civil liberties," he said.

A CNN poll released on Thursday showed 54 percent of Americans support gathering phone records to find terrorists. A few days earlier, a Washington Post/ABC News poll showed 51 percent approve of the way Bush was protecting their privacy.

Some Blog News

Crooks and Liars is back up and running (it was not a hack as some people think).

Firedoglake may be intermittent today. We transferred the servers over to the new hosting company last night and changed the DNS. It generally takes 24-48 hours for a DNS to propagate through the millions of nameservers around the world. We do have it set up so that the old server and new server are in sync so depending on which server you land on, comments and posts will be the same across the board.
