Politics Above Child Saftey - The GOP Motto

Posted 9/30/06 at 10:18pm by jamie

Josh has been on top of the Foley story and he has found something very alarming:

Finally, one detail here isn't getting enough attention. Rep. Alexander (R-LA), the first member of Congress to be alerted to the problem, says he contacted the NRCC. That's the House Republicans' election committee, a political organization entirely separate from the House bureaucracy and the Congress. (The head of the NRCC this cycle is Rep. Tom Reynolds (R-NY).) That is, to put it mildly, not in the disciplinary and administrative chain of command of the House of Representatives. Considering that the issue involved a minor, it seems highly inappropriate to discuss the matter with anyone not charged with policing the House. More to the point, however, you tell the head of the NRCC because you see the matter as a political problem. Reynolds is the one in charge of making sure Republican House seats get held. If an incumbent might have drop out or be kicked out you want him to know so that he can line up someone to replace him. You at least want to keep him abreast of the situation if you think a problem might develop. I cannot see any innocent explanation for notifying the head of the NRCC while not information the full membership of the page board.

(emphasis mine)

Get that? The "party of values" put politics ahead of child safety. These are children who are suppose to be having the experience of a lifetime which is a reward for the hard work they have done. Instead these selfish fuckers worried about political future and could careless that these children could end up traumatized for life. I can't not begin to tell you how sick this is. They let the priests get away with this shit, now they cover up for politicians doing it.

This is the party of values? No thanks!

Remember a few months back when Patrick Kennedy had his crash while under the influence of medication? There was so much screaming from the right about a "cover-up". Here is a trip down memory lane from that:

These are just a few examples that a quick Google gave me. These are also all sites that not only were screaming about a cover-up for Kennedy, but also have not even questioned the possible cover-up surrounding the Foley case (and all sites have posted since the story broke yesterday). So why is it when someone crash's there car and the police take them home it is the end of the world to these wingnuts, yet a Republican is engaging in sexual conversations with a minor (of the same sex) over the internet, the leadership apparently tries to cover it up and the wingnuts turn the other cheek? This shows you that these idiots have absolutely zero sense of decency.

How Did The Bush Administration Try To Prevent 9/11?

Posted 9/30/06 at 5:02pm by jamie

From Yesterday's NYTimes:

On July 10, 2001, the book says, Mr. Tenet and his counterterrorism chief, J. Cofer Black, met with Ms. Rice at the White House to impress upon her the seriousness of the intelligence the agency was collecting about an impending attack. But both men came away from the meeting feeling that Ms. Rice had not taken the warnings seriously.

Tomorrow's WaPo:

The book also reports that then-CIA Director George J. Tenet and his counterterrorism chief, J. Cofer Black, grew so concerned in the summer of 2001 about a possible al-Qaeda attack that they drove straight to the White House to get high-level attention.

Tenet called Rice, then the national security adviser, from his car to ask to see her, in hopes that the surprise appearance would make an impression. But the meeting on July 10, 2001, left Tenet and Black frustrated and feeling brushed off, Woodward reported. Rice, they thought, did not seem to feel the same sense of urgency about the threat and was content to wait for an ongoing policy review.

I wonder if Condi feels the urgency now?

Raw Story has much more.

Why Boehner Matters

Posted 9/30/06 at 3:46pm by jamie

Last night in my Open Letter to John Boehner, I made this statement:

I am not asking as a blogger. I am asking as a constituent. Considering the pure number of these acts we here reported in our own area on a daily basis (and I do only live 10 miles from you so we hear the same news), couldn't you have exhibited some outrage and taken action?

Today I want to put some backing on that claim.

Sexual Misconduct Arrest

An Escondido man is being held in lieu of $1 million bail in Ohio after pleading not guilty to several charges stemming from an alleged tryst he had with a 13-year-old girl, it was reported Thursday.

Christopher Ryan King, 28, allegedly had sex with the girl after meeting her on the Internet, according to published reports.

He pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Montgomery County Municipal Court to 12 charges of sexual misconduct involving the girl at a Brookville, Ohio, motel.

Man facing sex charge

A Florence man was arrested Monday evening and charged with using the Internet to solicit sex from an undercover police officer in Ohio.

Fred Voelker was arrested in an Internet sting operation conducted in Hamilton Township. He allegedly tried to solicit sex from an officer posing as a 15-year-old girl, Channel 5 reported.

Senior Citizen Arrested In Internet Sex Sting

Authorities arrested a senior citizen Tuesday morning in connection with an Internet sex sting.

Is The Cover Up Continuing?

Posted 9/30/06 at 3:09pm by jamie

Last night I reported about the discrepencies in the story between Hastert and Boehner. Hastert said he was never told of Foley and Boehner said he told Hastert. Now it looks like the story has taken another turn (big ht to Josh Marshall)

From the Washington Post

The resignation rocked the Capitol, and especially Foley's GOP colleagues, as lawmakers were rushing to adjourn for at least six weeks. House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Washington Post last night that he had learned this spring of inappropriate "contact" between Foley and a 16-year-old page. Boehner said he then told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). Boehner later contacted The Post and said he could not remember whether he talked to Hastert.

Emphasis mine

It is very interesting that Boehner would have made such a damming claim, only to give a mia culpa. This is has cover up written all over it. This story over took the House yesterday and you can not tell me that the Speaker of the House and the Majority Leader did not talk about it. You can only call bullshit on that.

With this single revelation, it shows that outside investigation must be conducted. The Republican leadership does not give a damn about the facts of what happened, only about political futures. They will twist stories and conduct cover ups if it means saving a seat or two. They will twist stories and lie in order to protect themselves. Bush constantly says that we are a "land of laws". Well the laws must be enforced vigilantly on this case.

For Something Off Topic

As my regular readers know, last month I removed the old CAPTCHA system on commenting (where you have to enter the graphical letters and numbers to post). At that time I activated the Akismet plugin that comes bundled with Wordpress to help combat spam.

Since that time, Akismet has caught 7,000 spam messages (as of this morning). Out of those 7,000 spam messages, only 1 message was caught that wasn't spam. That is an amazing number.

I contribute to Wordpress development as time permits, but never really used the Akismet plugin. Now I am kicking myself in the ass for not using it earlier. It has made life so much simpler and made the site much better. Kudos to Matt and rest of the Automattic team for this great plugin!

The Right Blogosphere's Reaction To Foley

Posted 9/30/06 at 2:26pm by jamie

Not surprisingly, the right side of the blogosphere seems somewhat quiet on the Foley news. There is however a couple of items I do want to bring up.

First is this post in Redstate's comment section:

I just posted a blog about this as you were writing your post, apparently, having just seen the Drudge reference.

What Foley did wrong was create this scenario in the first place, and so close to the election that the RPOF probably can't get a good replacement candidate ready in time.

Yes Jonlester it is bad that he created this scenario. Being close to an election has nothing to do with it however. By the tone of this comment, I believe Jonelster feels it would have been better if Foley would have been allowed to continue his little emails until after the election. This is a case of winning seats outweighs child safety to some on the right.

In that same comment thread on Redstate, we also see how the right is trying to pass Foley off as a RINO (Republican In Name Only):

This RINO Rep Foley has been unveiled for who he always was. He was a media favorite because he fought his President & is liberal/moderate.

Recall he dropped from GOP primary for US Senate race earlier this cycle or last. The political insiders heard of rumors he was a homosexual even then. But, he could not win any statewide primary race as the "moderate" Bush-opposing RINO anyway.

He flirts then drops before he loses. Now, he's finally gone.

The only difference I could actually predict if Foley would have been a Democrat is that it wouldn't have gotten this far. Why? Because Republican leadership would have instantly acted when complaints came out last year. It would have become a great issue for them. Instead it was a Republican and the Republican leadership could not let that get out in the open.

So Who Is Lying Now?

Posted 9/30/06 at 4:38am by jamie

Via Roll Call (via  Hunter):

Chairman of the House Page Board, Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) interviewed Foley last year about some of the contacts with the page. The House clerk who is also a member of the Board was also present. Speaker Hastert's office was informed of the interview, but according to leadership sources who spoke to Roll Call, Hastert himself was not informed..

The Washington Post:

The resignation rocked the Capitol, and especially Foley's GOP colleagues, as lawmakers were rushing to adjourn for at least six weeks. House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Washington Post last night that he had learned this spring of some "contact" between Foley and a 16-year-old page. Boehner said he told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), and that Hastert assured him "we're taking care of it."

So who is lying - Boehner or Hastert? My guess is both of them are lying about it. This is the Republican leadership. Perhaps they should worry about the victims and be truthful so that any other victims can be found and taken care of. That would be putting people before politics - something the Republicans would never do.

Dear John Boehner

According to this report, you were made aware of Foley's actions and it is apparent you did nothing. Why did you not take action? As majority leader, you should have addressed this situation. Perhaps a better situation for your party would have been vigilance and removed Foley from all positions of power pending an investigation. Instead it is obvious you ignored it.

I am not asking as a blogger. I am asking as a constituent. Considering the pure number of these acts we hear reported in our own area on a daily basis (and I do only live 10 miles from you so we hear the same news), couldn't you have exhibited some outrage and taken action?

Like anything else, I do not expect you to answer. You have turned your back on the residents of your district time and time again, and I am sure this time will be no different.

Perhaps the best thing I can do is encourage my readers to donate to the man running against you. I have met Mort Meier, and can personally say he would have taken action should he have been in the same position as you, instead of ignoring something so disgusting. So to all my readers - please give to Mort Meier and help replace the enabler John Boehner.

 Sincerely,

Jamie Holly

So Let's Get This Straight

Posted 9/30/06 at 2:49am by jamie

In the 90's, the Republican leadership in Congress decided to engage in a witchhunt against Bill Clinton that last for months and cost taxpayers millions. The witchhunt was about sexual relations between two consenting adults. The Republicans now try to blame Clinton for 9/11 and say it was because he was distracted by the Lewinsky scandal - a scandal they created. To the Republicans this is all ok.

Now we fast forward 8 years and find out about Mark Foley. To make matters even worse, senior Republican members of the House have known of these allegations for almost a year. They have chosen to ignore them. They chose to allow Foley to continue to hold a seat of power as a United States Congressman and never questioned it.

This is beyond hypocrisy. This is down right sick and very possibly illegal. The Republicans have endangered CHILDREN in the name of politics. They chose to ignore the warnings and that is unacceptable. How would they feel if this was their children? The Republicans have acted as enablers in this and they need to answer to it.

Are we going to sit by and not only become a nation of torture, but also a nation of political officials who prey upon children? Fuck No!
