Maliki Fears A Coup

Posted 5/31/07 at 11:38am by jamie

Last night al-Maliki told Lara Logan on CBS news that he fears a coup in his country:

Al-Maliki said that some of the officer corps have been creating problems and even violating the security of military operations. He stated, "I'm not afraid, but I have to watch the army, because those still loyal to the previous regime may start planning coups. Those people don't believe in democracy, and for that reason we are monitoring the status of the army very closely."

(Raw Story has the video)

That is understandable. I mean he is the leader of a country with an occupying force that a majority of the people don't want. Talk about being in a pickle.

But something else, even more interesting, was said in the interview:

Al-Maliki also insisted that his government is not ordered around by the Americans, saying, "The Americans don't order us to do this or not to do that. On the contrary, we're the ones who tell them to do this and don't do that."

When Bush announced his surge in January he said one of the key parts of it was that we would be working more on our own, free from the constraints of the Iraqi government. That became even more evident during the fiasco surrounding the wall in Baghdad. Now al-Maliki is saying no to that.

So now that we are ending the 3rd deadliest month since the war started and the Democrats just decided to fund this war, what should be done? I missed the whole financing thing last week due to vacation, but I have some strong feelings about that. The Democrats are scared of being branded "cut and runners" if they didn't fund the war, yet the troops are fearing the loss of their lives in this quagmire.

Looks Like Another Repug In

According to Politico, and the name should be of no shock:

Fred Dalton Thompson is planning to enter the presidential race over the Fourth of July holiday, announcing that week that he has already raised several million dollars and is being backed by insiders from the past three Republican administrations, Thompson advisers told The Politico.

Thompson, the "Law and Order" star and former U.S. senator from Tennessee, has been publicly coy, even as people close to him have been furiously preparing for a late entry into the wide-open contest.  But the advisers said Thompson dropped all pretenses on Tuesday afternoon during a conference call with more than 100 potential donors, each of whom was urged to raise about $50,000.

True it is the Politico. This is the same source that said Edwards was dropping out when Elizabeth's cancer returned. Their track record isn't that great.

Plame WAS Covert

Posted 5/29/07 at 8:11pm by jamie

Another Wingnut myth busted:

An unclassified summary of outed CIA officer Valerie Plame's employment history at the spy agency, disclosed for the first time today in a court filing by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, indicates that Plame was "covert" when her name became public in July 2003.

The summary is part of an attachment to Fitzgerald's memorandum to the court supporting his recommendation that I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Cheney's former top aide, spend 2-1/2 to 3 years in prison for obstructing the CIA leak investigation.

The nature of Plame's CIA employment never came up in Libby's perjury and obstruction of justice trial.

So will all the Malkins and Reynolds out there correct their past statements that Plame wasn't covert, or are they happy with attacking people who spend their lives trying to defend our nation?

Back From Vacation, But What About Iraq?

Posted 5/29/07 at 9:15am by jamie

I left for the beach on May 18 and returned on May 28. During that period of a little over a week, we lost 59 soldiers in Iraq, including at least 8 on Memorial Day:

At least eight U.S. soldiers were killed in restive Diyala province north of Baghdad on Memorial Day, two of the victims in a helicopter that went down, the military reported Tuesday.

All the dead were Task Force Lightning soldiers. The military said six soldiers died in explosions near their vehicles, but gave no further information.

It was not immediately known if the helicopter was shot down or suffered mechanical difficulties.

Wow - I am glad the Democrats caved and gave the White House their money now to continue this war. It is really making progress. (end sarcasm).

The Corruption At Home

Posted 5/17/07 at 1:33pm by jamie

Here in Butler County, Ohio, we are plagued with GOP scandals also. Just today we had this happen:

A Butler County official pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor crime.

Former county treasurer Carole Mosketti avoided jail time for her conviction on a conflict-of-interest charge, a judge fined her $1,000 and ordered her to pay $3,800 in restitution.

Mosketti was also ordered to resign from her elected position, which she did.

She has been under investigation by the state since last summer, when she hired her granddaughter to work for her.

Her position has not yet been filled.

Mosketti is a Republican and you can still view her profile on the county treasurer's website.

I know other towns have the same problems with Democrats and Republicans alike, but things have been really bad here. There has been a lot of shake up lately in our Republican controlled county, with numerous officials resigning or being fired. It should also be worth mentioning that this county is also the home to the House Minority Leader, John Boehner.

Was The FOX/GOP Debate A Propaganda Tool For The Terrorists?

Posted 5/17/07 at 12:22pm by jamie

Considering how FOX likes to ask questions like that, I decided to focus one at their debate, and in particular the section on torture. We heard such things as "I would call Jack Bauer" and other cute little comments all supporting torture. Of course the crowd at the GOP debate loved these responses and cheered for them.

Now let's think about that. We have 3 soldiers currently missing in Iraq. Al Qaeda is believed to be holding them and this was going on during the debate. Now we got one of our front runners, Rudy Giuliani, along with a candidate and current member of Congress, Tom Tancredo, talking about torture and how we should engage in it. Even worse - they are doing it on television. I wonder if al Qaeda was watching FOX? Everytime the Democrats say something about pulling our troops out of Iraq, the Republicans quickly jump on the bandwagon of saying our enemies are watching. Well I got a feeling they would be much more interested in who the next leader of our country might be than what Congress is doing.

Last Night's GOP Debate

Posted 5/16/07 at 8:30pm by jamie

I wanted to post about his last night, but right after the GOP debate ended on FOX we had a massive storm move through, which left me without internet for most of the day.

So - during last night's debate Ron Paul was discussing our foreign policy and how it helped lead to 9/11:

"Have you ever read about the reasons they attacked us? They attack us because we've been over there. We've been bombing Iraq for 10 years," he [Ron Paul] said.

Asked by a moderator if he was suggesting the United States invited the attacks, Paul said: "I'm suggesting we listen to the people who attacked us and the reason they did it. And they are delighted that we're over there because Osama bin Laden has said: I am glad you're over on our sand because we can target you so much easier."

To which Giuliani responded:

That's an extraordinary statement, as someone who lived through the attack of September 11, that we invited the attack because we were attacking Iraq," said Giuliani, who leads national polls in the Republican race.

"I don't think I've ever heard that before, and I've heard some pretty absurd explanations for Sept. 11th," Giuliani said to wild applause, asking Paul to withdraw the comment.

And received mass applause. You can check the whole thing out at Crooks and Liars.

Dear MSNBC:

Please check your sources!

While discussing Jerry Falwell with Chris Matthews, host Contessa Brewer quoted this article from Whitehouse.org in saying that Falwell was the "Executive Director of Global Policy".

Apparently Contessa doesn't realize that whitehouse.org is a satirical site, and her producer has never heard of whois, which tells you who the domain is registered to:
