Dictatorship!

Posted 7/20/07 at 7:55am by jamie

According to former Reagan official Paul Craig Roberts, that is exactly where this country is at now.

Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the US could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran.

Bush has put in place all the necessary measures for dictatorship in the form of "executive orders" that are triggered whenever Bush declares a national emergency. Recent statements by Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff, former Republican senator Rick Santorum and others suggest that Americans might expect a series of staged, or false flag, "terrorist" events in the near future.

Many attentive people believe that the reason the Bush administration will not bow to expert advice and public opinion and begin withdrawing US troops from Iraq is that the administration intends to rescue its unpopular position with false flag operations that can be used to expand the war to Iran.

This entire article deserves a good reading.

Robert's article came out on July 16. On July 17th, Bush signed a new Executive Order. Raw Story gives us this synopsis:

Thom Hartmann began his program on Thursday by reading from a new Executive Order which allows the government to seize the assets of anyone who interferes with its Iraq policies.

Insurgents Fighting Al Qaeda

Posted 7/19/07 at 2:22pm by jamie

That is something the wingnuts have been bolstering lately; "the insurgency is standing up to al Qaeda". While it is true, they fail to mention the other part of that equation. The Guardian has published an article explaining this (and repeating what the left has been saying):

Seven of the most important Sunni-led insurgent organisations fighting the US occupation in Iraq have agreed to form a public political alliance with the aim of preparing for negotiations in advance of an American withdrawal, their leaders have told the Guardian.

In their first interview with the western media since the US-British invasion of 2003, leaders of three of the insurgent groups - responsible for thousands of attacks against US and Iraqi armed forces and police - said they would continue their armed resistance until all foreign troops were withdrawn from Iraq, and denounced al-Qaida for sectarian killings and suicide bombings against civilians.

Speaking in Damascus, the spokesmen for the three groups - the 1920 Revolution Brigades, Ansar al-Sunna and Iraqi Hamas - said they planned to hold a congress to launch a united front and appealed to Arab governments, other governments and the UN to help them establish a permanent political presence outside Iraq.

This is much like the immigration debate here. We don't want illegal Mexicans in our country and Iraq don't want armed forces from other nations in their country. The problem is the talking heads on TV. They fail to always mention the simple fact that the insurgents want ALL foreigners out of their country.

Two More Troops Face Murder Charges

Posted 7/19/07 at 8:17am by jamie

Stories like this are becoming all too common:

Two U.S. soldiers have been charged with premeditated murder in the death of an Iraqi near the northern city of Kirkuk last month, the U.S. military said Thursday.

The charges were brought against Sgt. Trey A. Corrales of Texas and Spc. Christopher P. Shore of Georgia, following "reports of the alleged wrongdoing made by fellow soldiers to military authorities," the military's statement said.

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigative Division is conducting an ongoing investigation.

The announcement came hours after a Marine corporal was convicted of kidnapping and conspiracy to commit offenses including murder in connection with the death of an Iraqi man in Hamdaniya last year.

As I have been saying, we can't blame just the soldiers in these crimes. They are stuck in this never ending war and being deployed more often with less time at home. The stress gets to them. Of course the Republicans don't understand this basic concept and still protect Bush at the expense of our brave men and women.

Oh That Republican Spin

Posted 7/17/07 at 8:50am by jamie

I read the first paragraph of this AP article and my head started spinning:

Republicans dismissed as political theater a Democratic plan for an all-night session of the Senate to debate President Bush's military strategy in Iraq amid bipartisan proposals to redeploy U.S. troops.

So actually having a debate  on how to end a war that has killed 3,600 of our own soldiers is "political theater"? If that is political theater, then what do you call this?

We have lost over 3,400 soldiers since this act of "political theater".

How about a bunch of GOP senators arguing and fighting to give the "surge" time, only to say it isn't working a month later? These people are up for re-election and that makes it one very disgusting example of "political theater".

How about Mitch McConnell filibustering every piece of legislation that comes out of the Democrats? That isn't just "political theater", that is obstructionism - especially when the same McConnell complained about the Democrats threatening one filibuster on a judge.

If these Republicans don't want to do their job and debate, then they need to just leave the Senate. Debating the war isn't "political theater" to the soldiers over their fighting, nor their families. It isn't "political theater" to the loved ones of the 3,600+ soldiers that have fallen.

Which Republican Presidential Hopeful Does The Military Like?

If you answered Ron Paul then you are correct!

Congressman Ron Paul has defined his Republican presidential candidacy with a staunchly critical stance on the Iraq war, saying during the June 5 debate in New Hampshire, for example, that it was a "mistake to go and a mistake to stay."

Paul has often reiterated his views that US security has been worsened by its military presence in Iraq, and that Bush's pre-emptive war doctrine represented one of his administration's greatest moral failings.

One might think such criticism of the war and the Commander-in-Chief's leadership would make Paul a pariah to the military community, however, the latest figures indicate the antiwar Republican is receiving more donations from employees of the US military than any other Republican candidate.

Considering how much Ron Paul is against the war in Iraq, it shows you which one was correct yesterday on Meet the Press (hint - it WAS NOT Lindsey Graham).

If It Walks Like Bush And Talks Like Bush

Then America don't want it!

In a widely expected move, Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) press department resigned en masse today.

Communications director Brian Jones stepped down, along with deputies Matt David and Danny Diaz. Research director Brian Rogers and South Carolina McCain spokesman Adam Temple are also leaving the campaign.

None of the depatures is surprising, as Jones, Diaz, David and the others were seen as loyalists of campaign manager Terry Nelson, who resigned last week. Sources familiar with the campaign insisted the departures were not acrimonious, pointing out that Jones and David will stay through the week to help ease the transition.

Perhaps him and Lieberman can just start their own party - the party of delusional loyalists to Bush (aka. The DLB).

We Are An Occupier

Posted 7/15/07 at 10:50am by jamie

Lindsey Graham told Tim Russert this morning that we will leave Iraq when OUR generals say so, even though al-Maliki has said we could leave. In other words, we will not recognize the sovereignty of the Iraqi government.

I don't remember anything in the war authorization saying we would be an occupying force. Sounds like this war is even more illegal now.

Iraq Has Less Than A Month To Reach Benchmarks

Posted 7/13/07 at 4:05pm by jamie

Petraeus' report is on September 15. We got the interim report this week stating that they are only "satisfactorily" on track to meet 8 of 18 benchmarks. Now check out this news:

The White House said Friday that Iraq's parliament may take the month of August off but downplayed the impact on political reconciliation efforts seen as key to quelling deadly violence.

"My understanding is at this juncture they're going to take August off, but you know, they may change their minds," said spokesman Tony Snow, who refused to say whether there had been US efforts to dissuade them.

"You know, it's 130 degrees (54 Celsius) in Baghdad in August. I'll pass on your recommendation," he said when a reporter asked about the impact on an Iraq progress report due by September 15.

So Tony - it is acceptable for them to take off August, and one good reason is that it's 130 degrees? What about our soldiers?

Here is what should happen. The Democratic leaders of both houses should start serious debate on this issue. They should cancel our August recess and keep Congress in session to work out our problems and bring this war to an end. Oh - but it is only 90 degrees in D.C. during August.

Executive Privilege On Tillman's Death

Posted 7/13/07 at 3:07pm by jamie

This White House isn't even human:

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) revealed on Friday afternoon that the White House and Pentagon were holding up a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee investigation into the friendly fire death of former professional football player and Army Corporal Patrick Tillman.

"[T]he Committee wrote to White House Counsel Fred Fielding seeking 'all documents received or generated by any official in the Executive Office of the President' relating to Corporal Tillman's death," noted a press release from the Committee.

But the White House has apparently again invoked its executive privilege to hold up the documents sought by Waxman and Ranking Minority member Tom Davis (R-VA).

"The White House Counsel's office responded that it would not provide the Committee with documents that 'implicate Executive Branch confidentiality interests' and produced only two communications with the officials in the Defense Department, one of which was a package of news clippings," the Committe noted. "The response of the Defense Department to the Committee's inquiry was also deficient."

This is sick. They not only lied about his death, but are now trying to hide the reasons for the lie. This further proves that Bush has no respect for our troops, their lives or their families.
