Croniextinction

Posted 11/29/08 at 12:02pm by jamie

crony One thing that is a big difference between Bush and Obama is the lack of cronies we see going into our new administration.

Barack Obama’s picks for Cabinet and other senior posts are many things: centrists, veterans, rivals. Most of all, though, they’re big: big names, big intellects and big egos.

The president-elect’s national security and economic policy teams, inside the White House and out, will be led by power politics veterans, all but one of them older than the president-elect, and all accustomed to being the most important voice in the room.

No horse racers running emergency response agencies? Nope – this is the sign of a man willing to actually run the government instead of making it a clearing house for his friends that failed at everything else in life.

DOH!

wiggumgun1 Here is some Simpson sounding news from the next town over from me:

Middletown police Chief Greg Schwarber is recovering from a gunshot wound he suffered Friday, Nov. 28, at his residence on Todhunter Road.

Monroe police were called to the Schwarber residence at 1:25 p.m. on a report of an accidental discharge of a gun, said Sgt. Tom Cobaugh.

Schwarber, 54, was shot in the leg while cleaning a Glock .45-caliber pistol just minutes after giving his daughter a gun safety lesson, according to reports.

Shouldn’t part of that safety lesson included making sure the chamber is cleared before cleaning the gun?

Tis’ The Season To Give It Up

kelsey.1198147620.dscf0970 Planned Parenthood in Indiana is offering gift certificates for health care and contraceptives:

The network of 35 clinics across the state announced it is offering holiday vouchers for basic health care services "or the recipient's choice of birth control method."

The organization decided to offer the vouchers because so many people are uninsured or are putting off health care because of prohibitive costs, said Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana. Nearly 800,000 Indiana residents don't have health insurance, she said.

Of course the right to lifers are not liking this one bit:

Opponents of abortion said Planned Parenthood was making a "mockery" of the holiday season.

"The tragedy is that almost 6,000 fewer children will be celebrating a first Christmas this year because they were aborted in Planned Parenthood's Indiana clinics," said Mike Fichter, president and CEO of Indiana Right to Life.

A “mockery”! Wooo. Glad no one else does that. Remember when Jesus said “to celebrate my birth, go to stores and give your money to the rich”?

Happy Thanksgiving

Here’s to a fun day of spending time with relatives you never agree with, only to eat way more than any human should so you can pass out on the couch later, feeling like that turkey that was over stuffed today. Hee haw!

No Bonus For You

bewkes_bighead_cash Barack Obama has now said that executives of these failing banks should forfeit their bonuses:

Asked whether bank executives should forgo their bonuses, Obama said: "I think they should." He also said it would show they are taking responsibility.

"I think that if you are already worth tens of millions of dollars, and you are having to lay off workers, the least you can do is say, I'm willing to make some sacrifice as well," Obama said.

It seems like such a simple idea – one that makes sense. Well it is. The reason this is newsworthy is because you would never hear something like this from Bush or a Republican. They would feel that it was “interfering with the free market”. Of course when the free market is on life support from the tax payer, then those freedoms need boundaries.

Healthcare Discussion On The Rise

Posted 11/26/08 at 9:15am by jamie

healthcare Change is awesome! The Obama transition team has launched a section on change.gov dedicated to healthcare reform. There are already close to 1,200 comments on it. Imagine a government letting people voice their opinion? I thought that was America’s principal, but wasn’t so sure after the last eight years. Well it looks like it may be our principal again.

But that isn’t all. John Conyers is working on a single payer healthcare package and now has a page dedicated to informing the public about it.

A core belief of the Democratic Party is starting to see life, and could become reality. How many times has that happened for the Republicans?

“Electric Vehicle Capital Of The U.S.”

Posted 11/25/08 at 9:33pm by jamie

elec-embarcadero That’s what California is working towards:

Recently the cities of San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland unveiled a massive concerted effort to become the electric vehicle capitol of the United States! This groundbreaking development heralds a nine-step plan that includes everything from buying fully electric vehicles for all government transportation to expediting the approval of charging outlets throughout the bay area, including those located on the street. The creation of this essential infrastructure marks a huge step towards the acceptance of electric vehicles as a viable alternative to those that run on fossil fuel.

This is the kind of infastructure enhancements we need on a national scale. Not only will it help our environment and decrease our dependency on foreign oil, but it will boost our dying economy. Think of all the jobs this will create. President-elect Obama – here’s a good thing to build upon.

Gates To Remain As SecDef

Robert Gates at Senate Armed Servic Com 2 6 08 No big surprise here:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has agreed to stay on under President-elect Barack Obama, according to officials in both parties. Obama plans to announce a national-security team early next week that includes Gates at the Pentagon and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) as secretary of state, officials said.

Retired Marine Gen. James Jones, former Marine commandant and commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Europe, will be named national security adviser, the officials said.

I think it’s a good move. Keeping someone around who might know where the bodies are buried can be beneficial.

Contagious

071126-N-5549O-228 Timeline fever is catching on, and now Afghanistan has caught it:

President Hamid Karzai demanded at a meeting with a UN Security Council team Tuesday that the international community set a "timeline" for ending military intervention in Afghanistan, his office said.

Karzai told a delegation from the Council that his country needed to know how long the US-led "war on terror" was going to be fought in Afghanistan or it would have to seek a political solution to a Taliban-led insurgency.

A US-led invasion ousted the extremist Islamic Taliban regime in 2001 and launched its "war on terror", which has brought nearly 70,000 mainly Western troops to Afghanistan, most of them under a UN Security Council mandate.

If Bush would have kept his eye on the ball, instead of being distracted by that shiney object called Iraq, then we might not be facing news like this today.
