Michael Steele Doesn’t Have A Clue

Posted 8/31/09 at 11:38pm by jamie

Last week Michael Steele wanted to “protect Medicare”. Well this week that has all changed:

Transcript (via Think Progress)

STEELE: Well yeah. I mean you’ve got to look at the Medicare system as a whole and see that it’s in financial trouble. So how do you correct that? [...]

CHALIAN: Part of correcting it is to keep the idea of cuts on the table, correct?

STEELE: Part of correcting …

CHALIAN: Part of correcting the financial stability of Medicare.

STEELE: Oh yeah. You’ve got to deal with those inefficiencies, absolutely.

Medicare is good. Medicare is bad. Make up your mind Mike!

Preaching Hate

Posted 8/31/09 at 7:19pm by jamie

Remember that black guy toting the AR-15 to an Obama event a few weeks back? Well here is video of him sitting in the church while his pastor goes on about “hating” the President and wishing him dead.

Apparently the Secret Service is already looking into this. I wonder when church officials will. Isn’t preaching hate against everything Jesus stood for?

Never Been Really Questioned

I was reading the excellent post by Sully in which he describes Chris Wallace’s interview of Dick Cheney as “a teenage girl interviewing the Jonas Brothers”. While reading it I started thinking about all the Cheney interviews in the past, and believe me there wasn’t many out there.

When the going got tough, Cheney always took to the airwaves. He would jump into the lion’s den cuddly kitten factory known as Rush Limbaugh and FOX News. The man has never faced an actual interview. He hasn’t been pushed on any of his views or actions, essentially castrating the entire fourth estate.

Is it any wonder that Eric Holder is investigating torture? If Cheney would have actually defended the process instead of saying “we say its ok, so its ok”, then we might be in a different position today. Instead he exhibits the signs of a Megalomanic. Power given to such a man is a danger to any democracy, and we saw what it did to ours.

If Cheney really believes what he did was right then he wouldn’t fear facing actual interviewers. He would proudly take his defense to other interviewers like Jon Stewart or Rachael Maddow. But he can’t have his beliefs or power questioned, so instead he can only appear with friends. Dick Cheney is the biggest coward to ever serve this country, and people need to start calling him on it.

“We Hate the United States”

Posted 8/31/09 at 8:17am by jamie

Yesterday there was a pro-secession rally in Texas, or as I like to call it “the Rick Perry fan club”. One of the chants they were yelling - “we hate the United States”. Could you imagine that being yelled by people on the left during the Bush years? Welcome to the no-fly list, being intercepted by NSA and followed by the Pentagon.

But this doesn’t seem to be a problem confined to Texas. At the tea rallies and townhalls the right exhibiting more and more hatred to our nation. When we have people proudly declare they are “right wing terrorists” and Republican congressmen offering them support, then the problem becomes symbolic with the Republican Party.

It’s amazing that the party of Lincoln is so damn set on tearing this nation apart. Could you imagine if he was alive today to see this? Hell – could you imagine if Reagan was alive today to see this? The Republican Party has become a party of whackos and until it finds true leadership the membership will continue to deteriorate.

Eyes On Cincinnati Today

Posted 8/28/09 at 7:19am by jamie

Eight years ago Cincinnati was shutdown by major race riots, a reaction to the fatal shooting of Timothy Thomas by Cincinnati Police.

Since then race issues have been very touchy here. Now we are facing an incident in which a Cincinnati police officer tasered a young black female, who turns out to be a city councilman’s daughter. The incident appears to be unjust and Cincinnati police chief Tom Streicher is already calling the incident “excessive”. The internal investigation on the incident is due out today and expected to echo the chief’s views.

It is reassuring to see the police take a proactive response to this. The incident occurred last weekend, so we are seeing a completed investigation in under a week. Hopefully the punishment handed down to the officer will be fitting for the crime, even though I doubt it will. The city manager will decide on disciplinary action. If the force was truly excessive then the prosecutor should be brought in to decide. Police should be held to the same standards as those they are charged to protect, and if you or me assaulted someone we would be facing a judge.

Please get it right Cincinnati. If this officer is found to have used excessive force then refer is to Hamilton County prosecutors and let them decide if the officer should be charged with a crime. It will hopefully send a message to police officers nationwide that they need to think twice before deploying their tasers.

Richardson Off The Hook

Posted 8/27/09 at 7:24am by jamie

It looks like Bill Richardson will be cleared of any wrong doing in the pay to play scandal:

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and former high-ranking members of his administration won't be criminally charged in a yearlong federal investigation into pay-to-play allegations involving one of the Democratic governor's large political donors, someone familiar with the case said.
The decision not to pursue indictments was made by top Justice Department officials, according to a person familiar with the investigation, who asked not to be identified because federal officials had not disclosed results of the probe.

That’s good news. I think Richardson could be a valuable asset to the administration, but this prevented that. Now that he is cleared maybe we can start using him more.
