BREAKING: Coast Guard Responding To Reports Of Another Overturned Oil Rig

Posted 4/30/10 at 5:27pm by jamie

This is all we know so far:

The U.S. Coast Guard said Friday it was responding to another oil drilling rig accident near Morgan City, Louisiana.

The "mobile inland drilling unit" overturned in the Charenton navigational channel south of U.S. Highway 90 at Morgan City.

UPDATE.

Here’s some more:

Officials say an oil drilling rig on its way to a scrap yard has overturned in Louisiana.

No injuries have been reported. The overturned rig is unrelated to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that threatens the coast's fragile ecosystem.

The Coast Guard said Friday that the rig overturned about 80 miles west-southwest of New Orleans.

It can carry about 20,000 gallons of diesel fuel, but Coast Guard officials did not know how much fuel was on board. Coast Guard investigators say no fuel leaks have been found.

About 500 feet of boom has been set up around the rig to contain any fuel that might leak as a precaution.

Where’s The “Drill Baby Drill” Crowd?

Posted 4/30/10 at 1:07pm by jamie

Funny how since the spill in the Gulf, the “drill baby drill” crowd has become silent. Shouldn’t they be out there advocating their position? Maybe they can highlight this part of their plan:

Louisiana health officials have ordered air quality testing after a “pungent fuel smell” blanketed “much of coastal Louisiana” and New Orleans. People along Florida’s Gulf Coast also noticed an “oily odor” that “leaves a bitter taste in your mouth” permeating the air. Officials say the smell could be from the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and are warning that people may experience “nausea, vomiting or headaches.”

Nothing like stepping out on a nice spring morning to the smell and taste of oil. MMMM MMMM good. Come on  now – let’s hear more “drill baby drill” chants by Sarah Palin and Michael Steele.

What The Democrats Immigration Bill Doesn’t Include

Posted 4/30/10 at 11:04am by jamie

Yesterday the Democrats released the outline for immigration reform, but there is something missing. The issue, which goes to the heart of the matter, is the hiring of illegal immigrants. Under current laws the fines for businesses that hire illegals is laughable. It’s such a small amount that the fines actually becoming nothing more than the “cost of doing business”.

Let me go back to an example I have cited here before. A Krispy Kreme factory here in southwest Ohio was busted for hiring illegals back in 2006. At the time they found 25 undocumented workers employed by the diabetes factory. In 2009 they finally settled for $40,000. If we now do some simple math we can quickly see how this was a really good deal for Krispy Kreme.

  • 2080 – Average number of hours worked per year per employee
  • 52,000 – The number of hours for 25 full time employees in a year.

Even if Krispy Kreme decided to pay this people $1.00 less per hour since they are illegal, they still came out $12,000 ahead in just one year. Who wouldn’t turn down an extra $12,000 a year? Not to mention that this also takes away from jobs for citizens in an area with extra-high unemployment, and even drives down the wages for those “legal” workers.

When immigration reform came up a couple of years ago the Democrats did try to increase the penalties to companies hiring illegals. That was quickly defeated by the Republicans, who decried the move as “unfair” to business. Instead they chose to keep everything at the status quo and businesses continue to do the practice to this very day.

Headlines The Make Me Smile

From USA Today:

Oil spill could sink Obama's offshore drilling plan

If there was ever a silver lining to something so horrible, this is it. But at what costs?

A third leak has been discovered, and a fire-fighting expert said the disaster may become the biggest oil spill ever.

[SNIP]

Some 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons) a day were now thought to be gushing into the sea 50 miles off Louisiana's coast, said the US Coastguard's Rear Admiral Mary Landry.

Already people are saying this is going to trump Exxon-Valdez and could be the worst disaster in U.S. history. We really don’t need to increase the chances for this to happen by increasing offshore drilling and hopefully it is providing a serious wake up call to the White House.

Ohio Voters May Have Chance To Decide On Arizona Style Immigration Law

Posted 4/29/10 at 2:24pm by jamie

Our own version of Sheriff Joe Arpaio is suffering from penis envy over Arizona’s new immigration laws:

In response to the Ohio governor’s vow to veto any Arizona-like immigration legislation, Butler County’s sheriff and a local lawmaker say they’ll take the issue directly to voters.

Sheriff Richard K. Jones announced today, April 29, he will spearhead efforts to have a statewide “citizens initiative” placed on the ballot for Ohio immigration reform.

Fearing recent letters he sent jointly with state Rep. Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton, to Ohio leaders won’t be enough to get immigration reform on the “fast track” for Ohio, Jones said he wants the voters to decide the issue in November.

Recently Jones made other immigration news:

An undocumented immigrant worker who sued Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones for violating his constitutional rights has been awarded $100,000 in a settlement agreement.

The settlement filed in U.S. District Court stems from the 2007 arrest of Luis Rodriguez, 44, formerly of Lebanon, when he and others were rounded by at a Port Union Road construction site by Butler County deputies and a former immigration specialist hired by Jones.

Officials said they were at the site to talk to a supervisor about undocumented workers, but Rodriguez and more than 20 others were interrogated and asked to provide identification, according to Rodriguez’s attorney, Al Gerhardstein, who posted the settlement Tuesday, April 20 on his firm’s website.

Tom Delay Associates Will Face Charges

BAM:

The Austin appeals court erred in deciding that the state’s money-laundering statute - used to prosecute associates of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay - did not apply to transfers made via checks, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruled today.

The court’s 9-0 decision also upheld the state’s election laws prohibiting corporations from making political contributions to candidates. DeLay’s associates - John Colyandro and Jim Ellis - had challenged the law as an unconstitutional infringement on First Amendment rights.

In 2002, the Public Integrity Section of the Travis County District charged Colyandro - working on behalf of Texans for a Republican Majority PAC - with accepting political contributions from corporations.

Colyandro and Ellis also were charged with money laundering by transferring $190,000 in corporate contributions to the Republican National Committee by a check, with a similar amount later returned to the state organization.

GOP Congressional Candidate Wants To Microchip Illegal Immigrants

Posted 4/28/10 at 2:19pm by jamie

Pat Bertroche, who is running for Congress in Iowa has a great idea:

“I think we should catch ’em, we should document ’em, make sure we know where they are and where they are going,” said Pat Bertroche, an Urbandale physician. “I actually support micro-chipping them. I can micro-chip my dog so I can find it. Why can’t I micro-chip an illegal?

“That’s not a popular thing to say, but it’s a lot cheaper than building a fence they can tunnel under,” Bertroche said.

Sure – let’s pay out all the big bucks to microchip these people. Forget human rights and the costs to implement and run such a huge bureaucratic system. But doesn’t this beg the question; if we just caught them then why not just deport them? Nah that would make too much sense and we are talking about a Republican here.

They have found a boat! A really old boat that is and once again we hear claims that it is Noah’s ark:

fnna

From the article:

A group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers say wooden remains they have discovered on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey are the remains of Noah's Ark.

The group claims that carbon dating proves the relics are 4,800 years old, meaning they date to around the same time the ark was said to be afloat. Mt. Ararat has long been suspected as the final resting place of the craft by evangelicals and literalists hoping to validate biblical stories.

Yeung Wing-Cheung, from the Noah's Ark Ministries International research team that made the discovery, said: "It's not 100 percent that it is Noah's Ark, but we think it is 99.9 percent that this is it."

Wait…

They used carbon dating to figure out how old it is? Would this be the same carbon dating that proves caveman lived tens of thousands of years before God created Adam and Eve? I thought that kind of witchcraft was frowned upon by the church!

And Who Would An Independent Crist Caucus With?

Posted 4/28/10 at 8:00am by jamie

If Charlie Crist ends up running as an Independent in the Florida Senate race and wins, the big question is who will he caucus with? I asked this question in a post a couple of weeks ago and now Crist has been asked about it in an interview (via TPM):

Q If you win as an independent, which party would you caucus with in Washington - the Republicans or Democrats?
A You're way ahead of me. One day at a time.

Here he has played the typical role of politician when it comes to evading questions, but it is interesting that he doesn’t seem so dedicated to the Republicans to answer that he will caucus with them. Even Joe Lieberman said he would caucus with the Democrats when he was facing losing the primary. The answer really leaves me wondering if Crist isn’t considering jumping ship if he wins as an independent. Now that would be very interesting.
