High Gas Prices? BLAME OBAMA!

Posted 12/30/10 at 10:21am by jamie

high-gas-prices-photoTea Party Nation has just blasted out an email blaming Obama for the rising gas prices (login required):

As we close out 2010, gas prices in much of the country crept about the $3 a gallon mark.  In an interview a couple of days ago, the ex-president of Shell oil predicted $5 a gallon gas by 2012.

He is probably right.

Does anyone remember what Obama said when gas prices shot well over $4 a gallon in 2008?  Then candidate Obama said he did not have a problem with gas being $4 a gallon or more.  His problem was the sudden, sharp rise of the price.  In other words, if the price gradually went up, he would not have a problem with it.

Gas prices were around $1.60 a gallon when George Bush left office.  Bush, by lifting the executive order on off shore drilling, had poked a hole in the speculative bubble that had pushed oil prices to $145 a barrel.   Bush did that in July and by December, oil prices had fallen to $30 a barrel.

Yes Bush did lift the ban, but once again fact it totally amiss with the rabid right. Do they really think that within a few months oil companies built and started operating a bunch of offshore platforms, which caused prices to go down? And if that is the case, why didn’t Bush lift the ban much earlier, when we were seeing gas prices over $4.00/gallon?

New Year, New Winger Crapspiracy Theories

Posted 12/29/10 at 8:26am by jamie

obamaindianAs we get ready to roll into 2011 the fringe wingnuts have decided it’s time to come up with some brand new conspiracy theories about the President:

The good news is that the right-wing isn't talking about President Obama being a secret Muslim right now. The bad news is that they're now concerned that he's going to use his honorary status as a Crow Tribe Indian to return the United States to Native Americans.

The outrage began after the President announcedon December 16 that the U.S. would reverse course and support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. The Declaration was adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in 2007, but the U.S., under President Bush, opposed it.

I really think the wingnuts would embrace this idea. They always seems so hell bent on taking the U.S. back to the days of the wild west, so why not?

Time To Deny Global Warming Again

Atlanta sees their first white Christmas since 1882

As the country and most of world experiences below average temperatures and record snow falls, the wingnuts are starting their annual cry of “global warming is a lie!” This piece in the New York Times sparked this year’s season of denial:

THE earth continues to get warmer, yet it’s feeling a lot colder outside. Over the past few weeks, subzero temperatures in Poland claimed 66 lives; snow arrived in Seattle well before the winter solstice, and fell heavily enough in Minneapolis to make the roof of the Metrodome collapse; and last week blizzards closed Europe’s busiest airports in London and Frankfurt for days, stranding holiday travelers. The snow and record cold have invaded the Eastern United States, with more bad weather predicted.

BREAKING: START Passes The Senate

Posted 12/22/10 at 3:20pm by jamie

The Senate has just ratified the START treaty by a 71-26 vote. All Democrats voted for the bill and 13 Republicans, 1/4 of the Republican caucus, broke with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to ratify the new treaty.

(On a side note, sorry for the lack of posting. With the holidays, a bad cold and massive work load, I haven’t been able to keep up with anything!)

Want A Raise? Become A GOP Staffer

Posted 12/20/10 at 9:56am by jamie

This is how the GOP cuts government spending:

For a guy who insists that federal bureaucrats make too much money, incoming House Majority Leader Eric Cantor sure doesn't mind handing out handsome government raises of his own.

Cantor, the Virginia Republican who has led the GOP charge this year to freeze federal salaries, has boosted his congressional office's payroll by 81 percent since coming to Congress in 2001 – about 8 percent per year through 2009. When he became minority whip last year, the office's personnel expenses went up by at least 16 percent.

And how about a Tea Bagger darlings?

_ Firebrand Republican Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has for months pushed legislation to freeze what she calls "unconscionable" federal salaries. Meanwhile, her own payroll jumped 16 percent between 2007, when she came to Congress, and 2009.

If you are one of those Tea Baggers that believe in people like Bachmann then I got some ocean front property in Utah to sell you. You really need to wake up and realize that you are being made a total fool of.

Local Boehner Supporter/Politician Indicted

56548502_-1_543547bThe ever growing Dynus scandal that has plagued the GOP in my home of Butler County, Ohio saw another one fall yesterday:

A federal grand jury has indicted West Chester Twp. Trustee George Lang for allegedly lying while under oath.

According to the indictment released just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, Lang “knowingly made a false material declaration” on Aug. 11, 2009 while in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati testifying in the federal case against Orlando Carter, the former president and owner of the now defunct Dynus Technologies.

Lang, 45, faces up to a five-year penalty for perjury, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Lang, a West Chester Township trustee (which also happens to be the home of John Boehner), is one of numerous Butler County Republicans under indictment in this scandal. The FBI has been working on this investigation going on two years now. Other GOP indictments include former county commissioner Michael Fox and former auditor Kay Rogers, who was forced to resign her position following her indictment.

Lang’s involvement also seems to focus around the lobbying company he owns:

Appeals Court: Warrant Needed To Get Your Email

Posted 12/15/10 at 7:57am by jamie

EmailLogoFor years law enforcement used court orders to obtain the emails of suspects. Court orders are much simpler to get than an actual warrant. Well that practice is coming to an end:

The government must obtain a court warrant to require internet service providers to turn over stored e-mail to the authorities, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.

The decision by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was the first time an appellate court said Americans had that Fourth Amendment protection.

“The government may not compel a commercial ISP to turn over the contents of a subscriber’s e-mails without first obtaining a warrant based on probable cause” (.pdf), the appeals court ruled. The decision — one stop short of the Supreme Court — covers Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee

My favorite part of the decision:

“The Fourth Amendment must keep pace with the inexorable march of technological progress, or its guarantees will wither and perish,” the court ruled.

Unless you are George Bush.

BREAKING: Richard Holbrooke Has Died

Posted 12/13/10 at 7:39pm by jamie

From Jake Tapper:

ABC News has learned that Richard Holbrooke, the US Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, has died.

On Friday, Holbrooke was rushed to the hospital with a torn aorta. He went through more than 20 hours of surgery. Earlier this evening, speaking at the US State Department, President Obama sang Holbrooke's praises and called him "a tough son of a gun."

Holbrooke, 69, was a former ambassador to the United Nations and served as chief negotiator at the Dayton Peace Accords, which ended the war in Bosnia.

Federal Judge: Healthcare Mandates Unconstitutional

Posted 12/13/10 at 12:20pm by jamie

Can’t say I’m surprised by this:

A federal judge in Virginia ruled Monday that the individual mandate contained in the health care law passed by Congress and signed by President Barack Obama this year is unconstitutional.

The judge found in favor of Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who brought this suit separately from the other state Attorney Generals suing the federal government over the law.

I personally have been against these mandates since their inception. Requiring the people to purchase a product from a company really seems to go against everything this country stands for. I know some try to use the “auto insurance” example, but that doesn’t fair. You can choose not to drive, but choosing not to live – well that is also illegal.

Do You Have Broadband Internet? Think Again…

Posted 12/12/10 at 3:26pm by jamie

A new report [pdf] by the FCC gives a real wake-up call to U.S. internet customers:

A recent report by the FCC shows that more than two-thirds of so-called broadband internet connections in the U.S. don't actually meet the minimum speed requirements of 4Mbps downtream and 1Mbps upstream to be considered broadband.

In real terms, this means that over 90 million people in the US are linked up with substandard broadband service. Furthermore, 56% of those connections didn't even reach downstream speeds above 3Mbps. DSL Reports believes it has something to do with the lack of competition among broadband providers, allowing them to cruise by without upgrading their networks.

Likewise we pay a lot more in the U.S. for our internet than other developed nations. Now do you feel like your getting it in the rear from the telecom giants?
