Leaked Email Shows FOX Pushing GOP Talking Points

Posted 12/9/10 at 9:58am by jamie

fox-news-gop-logoWho needs Wikileaks?

At the height of the health care reform debate last fall, Bill Sammon, Fox News' controversial Washington managing editor, sent a memo directing his network's journalists not to use the phrase "public option."

Instead, Sammon wrote, Fox's reporters should use "government option" and similar phrases -- wording that a top Republican pollster had recommended in order to turn public opinion against the Democrats' reform efforts.

Journalists on the network's flagship news program, Special Report with Bret Baier, appear to have followed Sammon's directive in reporting on health care reform that evening.

Sources familiar with the situation in Fox's Washington bureau have told Media Matters that Sammon uses his position as managing editor to "slant" Fox's supposedly neutral news coverage to the right. Sammon's "government option" email is the clearest evidence yet that Sammon is aggressively pushing Fox's reporting to the right -- in this case by issuing written orders to his staff.

This really should come as no shock. Well that is no shock to people with an IQ higher than a gold fish or worm.

Beck’s Fraudulent Sponsors

Posted 12/9/10 at 7:30am by jamie

md_horizOne of Glenn Beck’s big gold sponsors is in some serious trouble:

Glenn Beck might, for once, be right: the government iscoming for your gold. But only if you happened to buy it from one of Beck's advertisers, the Superior Gold Group. At the request of prosecutors from LA County and Santa Monica city who have filed a civil suit against the company, Los Angeles County judge has ordered that Superior Gold be placed into receivership and all of its assets—bank accounts, real estate, and presumably gold stored for customers—frozen. On Monday, a court-appointed lawyer actually physically seized control of the company, presumably to prevent further wrongdoing. The lawsuit alleged that among other things, Superior had defrauded its customers by overcharging them, fraudulently inducing them to buy overpriced collectors' coins rather than the bullion that they wanted, and taking customers' money for coins they never produced. The prosecutors hope that the lawsuit will provide restitution for all of the company's ripped off customers. The judge will hold a hearing later this month to decide whether the company's assets should remain frozen until the case goes to trial.

Bring On Nick Fury And Iron Man!

250px-MarvelShieldThe Wikileaks document dump is bringing some in the Senate to action:

Sens. John Ensign (R-Nev.), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Scott Brown (R-Mass.) introduced a bill Thursday aimed at stopping WikiLeaks by making it illegal to publish the names of military or intelligence community informants.

Ensign accused WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and his "cronies" of hindering America's war efforts and creating a "hit list" for U.S. enemies by outing intelligence sources.

“Our sources are bravely risking their lives when they stand up against the tyranny of al Qaeda, the Taliban and murderous regimes, and I simply will not stand idly by as they become death targets because of Julian Assange," Ensign said. "Let me be very clear, WikiLeaks is not a whistleblower website and Assange is not a journalist.”

And what’s the name of this bill?

The Securing Human Intelligence and Enforcing Lawful Dissemination Act (SHIELD) would give the government the flexibility to pursue Assange for allegedly outing confidential U.S. informants.

YES! This is a MARVELous idea. I bet Stan Lee can help come up with some new agents to go after Assange.

Carmel Fires Cause Determined

Posted 12/6/10 at 1:35pm by jamie

Sorry wingnuts. It wasn’t terrorism. The “mooslims” weren’t trying to torch Israel. Instead it was a 14 year old boy that accidentally started the fire:

A 14-year-old boy from the Carmel region admitted Monday to throwing a piece of burning coal into the forest and causing what later became the largest and most devastating forest fire in Israel's history.

Police arrested the teen early on Monday, and he admitted during his interrogation to smoking a Hookah pipe in the forest, and later disposing the burning piece of coal into an open area in the woods, which caused a fire to erupt.

The teen said that he was so astounded at what had happened that he ran back to school and didn’t report the incident to anyone.

He will be brought before the Haifa Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for deliberations on extending his remand.

Dr. Evil Comes To Life

Posted 12/6/10 at 10:30am by jamie

Austin Powers arch nemesis, Dr. Evil, has transformed into a real life character named Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks. First off, here’s a look at the datacenter for Wikileaks.

wikileaksbunker420-420x0

Steel and glass doors frame its entrance, which is carved into the hard rock of Vita Bergen - The White Mountains - in the centre of Stockholm, Sweden.

Then you got Assange issuing a Dr. Evil style threat to the world:

Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, has circulated across the internet an encrypted “poison pill” cache of uncensored documents suspected to include files on BP and Guantanamo Bay.

One of the files identified this weekend by The Sunday Times — called the “insurance” file — has been downloaded from the WikiLeaks website by tens of thousands of supporters, from America to Australia.

Assange warns that any government that tries to curtail his activities risks triggering a new deluge of state and commercial secrets.

“Liberals Hate Israel!”

ISRAEL-FIRE/Jeffery Goldberg has written this in The Atlantic:

Inevitably, the Jewish National Fund, which, among other things, plants forests in Israel, is asking for donations from Americans for its "Forest Fire Emergency Campaign," in response to the massive fire spreading across the Carmel mountains. But I'm not giving.

Israel's per capita GDP is nearly $30,000. Israel is a rich country. The fact that it doesn't possess adequate firefighting equipment is its own fault. The fact that the leadership of its fire service is incompetent is its own fault (you can read more about that here).  At some point, the good-hearted Diaspora Jews who still think of Israel as a charity case are going to have to tell their cousins to learn to fully-fund basic services like firefighting if they want to be thought of as citizens of an advanced country.

So how does the right respond?

SURPRISE! Time Warner Sides With Comcast Over Netflix Dispute

Posted 12/3/10 at 12:47pm by jamie

From a press release issued by Time Warner:

“The recent news regarding the negotiations between Level 3 and Comcast has raised many questions about the way peering agreements are negotiated between Network Operators and has been inappropriately lumped into the issue of network neutrality.   These agreements have been and continue to be negotiated based on the amounts of traffic, not the type, being delivered to each party’s network by the other.   When the amount of traffic being delivered between two networks is generally balanced a “Settlement Free” peering agreement is likely the result.  However, when the amount of traffic is not balanced, it is commonplace for the network operator receiving the greater level of traffic to insist on compensation for the added costs that are faced as a result.    Again, the issue in these negotiations is the amount, not the type of data being transported.  Additionally, regardless of whether two Network Operators reach an agreement, end users will still be able to receive any data or content they wish to reach as that traffic will find an alternate route over other available interconnecting networks.   Because there is no discrimination among different types of content, and no blocking of content, peering agreements between Network Operators don’t raise Net Neutrality issues and have never been part of the Net Neutrality debate.”
