Government Waste?

Posted 2/28/11 at 10:58am by jamie

Perhaps a good place to start looking at government waste is in the military contracts, specifically those tied to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan:

A new report from a bipartisan commission set up to scrutinize the unprecedented use of contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan concludes that the United States has wasted tens of billions of the nearly $177 billion that has been spent on those contracts and grants since 2002.

The report, titled "At What Risk? Correcting Over-reliance on Contractors in Contingency Operations," said its estimate may even understate the problem because it may not take into full account ill-conceived projects, poor planning and oversight by the U.S. government, as well as criminal behavior and blatant corruption by both government and contractor employees.

"For many years," the report says, "the government has abdicated its contracting responsibilities - too often using contractors as the default mechanism ... without consideration for the resources needed to manage them."

And I’m sure the number is higher. I wonder if they even considered the $9 billion that went missing in Iraq in 2003-2004? You know, that money, which whenever Democrats brought up the Republicans didn’t want to hear about it.

How can we even begin to talk about “financial responsibility” when this gross lack of oversight/accounting can continue to go on in our government without any talks of reform?

Michael Bloomberg On Unions

Posted 2/28/11 at 9:46am by jamie

The mayor of New York hits the nail on the head:

Correcting this imbalance is not easy, but in a growing number of states, budget deficits are being used to justify efforts to scale back not only labor costs, but labor rights. The impulse is understandable; public sector unions all too often stand in the way of reform. But unions also play a vital role in protecting against abuses in the workplace, and in my experience they are integral to training, deploying and managing a professional work force.

And that’s something missing in the current debate. All the focus is on salaries and benefits, yet safety and training are a big issue the unions play a big part in. How about we take a really deadly statistic to prove this?

But an examination of the incidence of coal mine fatalities since 1995 shows that in every year but one fatal accidents occurred in non-union mines at a rate disproportionate–usually much more disproportionate–to the non-union share of the workforce. In other words, unionized mines were much safer.

Safety and training go hand in hand. When unions negotiate, one of the things they push for is better education, especially when it comes to worker safety, but also they push for better safety equipment. A lot of times other concessions are made to achieve this, including salaries and benefits. But that’s something the Walker crowd doesn’t want you to know about. Let’s just go ahead and have more Upper Big Branch mine accidents and fatalities.

And then Bloomberg gets to the heart of the matter:

The “Climategate” Hoax Hoax!

Posted 2/25/11 at 12:35pm by jamie

Republicans went on a rampage last year claiming that scientists the world over engaged in the historically largest act of collusion ever to coax the world into believe the climate was in trouble. Now we are finding out (yet again) that these people on the right were trying to dope the world into believing their vast conspiracy theories:

A Republican-led federal probe of climate scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found no evidence that they manipulated data, after leaked e-mails in 2009 sparked the "climategate" controversy.

The investigation was conducted by the inspector general of the Commerce Department. It reviewed the 1,073 leaked messages, particularly the 289 that were exchanged with NOAA scientists, and interviewed NOAA chief Jane Lubchenco and her staff about them.

"We did not find any evidence that NOAA inappropriately manipulated data," the inspector general concluded in a recent report. It also cleared Lucbhenco for testifying before Congress that the e-mails did not weaken the science of climate change.

The probe was requested by Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, the top Republican on the environment committee, who has called global warming "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people."

I wonder how much all these probes are costing our country?

Assange To Be Extradited

Posted 2/24/11 at 8:45am by jamie

Things are going to get really interesting now:

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is to be extradited to Sweden to face allegations of rape and sexual assault. Assange will appeal, his legal team confirmed. If this is unsuccessful, he will be extradited to Sweden in 10 days.

Delivering his ruling at a hearing at Belmarsh magistrates court in London, the chief magistrate Howard Riddle systematically dismissed each of the defence's arguments against Assange's extradition.

Assange's legal team had disputed that Swedish prosecutor, Marianne Ny, had the authority to issue a European arrest warrant, but the judge ruled that she did possess this authority and the warrant issued was valid.

I wonder if Assange will be releasing the secret key to his “insurance” file soon? He has threatened to do just that and this file has all the world’s leaders on edge.

Guilty Until Proven Innocent? The Right’s Assault On Women Continues

Posted 2/23/11 at 4:11pm by jamie

The fringe elements of America’s right continues to show it’s ugly head:

Georgia state Rep. Bobby Franklin (R) has made a name for himself by introducing far-right extremist bills. He has introduced legislation barring the state from requiring vaccinations, eliminating income taxes and replacing them with nothing, and requiring state taxpayers to only pay in gold or silver.

Now, he has introduced what may be his most offensive and extreme bill yet. Last week he unveiled HB 1, which would, as the parenting blog Babble explains, “require proof that a miscarriage occurred naturally.” If proof could not be provided, the mother could face “felony charges”:

State Rep. Bobby Franklin of Georgia introduced a bill in his state last week that, if enacted, would require proof that a miscarriage occurred naturally. If a woman can’t prove that her miscarriage–or spontaneous abortion–occurred without intervention, she could face felony charges.

BREAKING: Indiana Asst. AG Jeff Cox Has Been Fired

Posted 2/23/11 at 3:32pm by jamie

A quick follow-up on my morning post about Indiana assistant attorney general Jeff Cox calling for “live ammunition” against Wisconsin protestors. Cox has now lost his job with the state:

The Indiana Attorney General's Office said Wednesday morning that Cox's comments were under review. A later statement said Cox was "no longer employed by this agency."

"Civility and courtesy toward all members of the public are very important to the Indiana Attorney General's Office," the statement read. "We respect individuals' First Amendment right to express their personal views on private online forums, but as public servants, we are held by the public to a higher standard, and we should strive for civility."

This is a great first step. Now a great second step would be a push for disbarment. Any person who doesn’t understand the bedrock of our judicial system doesn’t deserve a job in law.

Freepers Calls For Armed Counter-protests

Posted 2/23/11 at 2:35pm by jamie

The rhetorical violence of the right continues:

Members of the various Tea Party, 9/12, and other freedom-oriented folks in the Atlanta area will be assembling in the vicinity of Georgia State Capitol this coming Wednesday afternoon at 4 pm. We’ll be providing balance to the ravings of the passengers aboard the SEIU Thugbus, which is scheduled to vomit forth its stooges at that same place and time.

If you are within three hours drive of ATL, come join us.

Dan and others from RTC will be there, with the usual accoutrements. As always, each participant is responsible for compliance with all applicable local laws.

Rally point will be the corner of Trinity and Washington Streets in front of the Trinity United Methodist Church. Guide on the Gadsden flags. Rendezvous time no later than 3:45 pm local.

There appears to be some regulations re armed protests on the Washington Street side of the Capitol, so attendees are requested to be flexible in your attire. We will attempt (but no promises) to get some additional clarity regarding the situation and post it here prior to the show.

Take a stand.

Join us in Atlanta on Wednesday.

The AJC thinks the vague wording at the end might be to tell people to carry concealed if need be:

The advice that “attendees are requested to be flexible in your attire” is apparently a suggestion to keep firearms concealed. The original author goes on to claim that “the lefties are idiots who are very good at running their mouths… and also very good at keeping their distance from an armed American”.

FOX News Had Another “Error”

Posted 2/23/11 at 12:07pm by jamie

The propaganda station is at their usual old tactics in swaying public opinion:

On the February 23 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends, co-host Brian Kilmeade brought on a panel of guests to discuss the ongoing protests in Wisconsin, sparked by Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to cut benefits and eliminate most collective bargaining rights for some public employees. While talking to Democratic strategist Robert Zimmerman, Kilmeade discussed the results of a recent USA Today/Gallup poll to falsely claim that "61 percent" of those polled are "in favor of taking [collective bargaining rights] away."

The poll Kilmeade is talking about is here, complete with this graphic:

The Gadhafi Mentality Of The Right

Posted 2/23/11 at 9:55am by jamie

Jeff Cox is a deputy attorney general for the state of Indiana. This weekend he took to Twitter to go after the protestors in Wisconsin:

On Saturday night, when Mother Jones staffers tweeted a report that riot police might soon sweep demonstrators out of the Wisconsin capitol building—something that didn't end up happening—one Twitter user sent out a chilling public response: "Use live ammunition."

From my own Twitter account, I confronted the user, JCCentCom. He tweeted back that the demonstrators were "political enemies" and "thugs" who were "physically threatening legally elected officials." In response to such behavior, he said, "You're damned right I advocate deadly force." He later called me a "typical leftist," adding, "liberals hate police."

Does one of the state’s attorneys for Indiana not understand due process? If people are threatening violence against legal officials then they should be arrested and prosecuted, not shot. This was totally uncalled for and something we hear coming out of Libya.

And here comes the totally hypocritical nonsense of this moron:

The Childish Tactics Of The Tea Party

Posted 2/21/11 at 8:53am by jamie

The Tea Party has come up with an idea on how to handle those pro-union protestors, in a post entitled ‘FIGHT THE SEIU WITH TACTIC THEY USE AGAINST US – THIS WEEK!’ by the very racist leader Mark Williams:

http://action.seiu.org/page/s/solidarityaction

.

That link will take you to an SEIU page where you can sign up as an “organizer” for one of their upcoming major rallies to support the union goons in Wisconsin.

Here is what I am doing in Sacramento, where they are holding a 5:30 PM event this coming Tuesday:  (1) I signed up as an organizer (2) with any luck they will contact me and I will have an “in”  (3) in or not I will be there and am asking as many other people as can get there to come with, all of us in SEIU shirts (those who don’t have them we can possibly buy some from vendors likely to be there)  (4) we are going to target the many TV cameras and reporters looking for comments from the members there  (5) we will approach the cameras to make good pictures… signs under our shirts that say things like “screw the taxpayer!”  and “you OWE me!” to be pulled out for the camera (timing is important because the signs will be taken away from us) (6) we will echo those slogans in angry sounding tones to the cameras and the reporters.  (7) if I do get the ‘in’ I am going to do my darnedest to get podium access and take the mic to do that rant from there…with any luck and if I can manage the moments to build up to it, I can probably get a cheer out of the crowd for something extreme.
