This Ain't Your Forefathers Tea Party

Posted 5/20/11 at 9:37am by jamie

Yesterday there was a major Tea Party rally scheduled in Columbia, S.C, in which about 2,000 people were expected to attend. Well it didn't turn out that way:

The Columbia Tea Party went from Donald Trump to jilted chump after the celebrity businessman canceled his appearance at Thursday’s State House rally, and state legislators approved tax breaks and spending that the group opposed.

Trump’s decision to not enter the GOP presidential race left local Tea Party leaders stewing about the way they had been treated. But about 30 people were on hand Thursday to thank Gov. Nikki Haley, lawmakers and activists for their work to require more on-the-record Legislative votes.
It was all part of a tough week for the state’s Tea Party movement.

(emphasis added)

Nikki Haley, a Tea Party darling, could only muster about 30 people to come out and hear her speak? I've seen the crazy guy preaching about the rapture on some random street corner get more listeners. But wait, pictures do speak louder than words, so here:

Of course the media will still have you believe that the Tea Party is this huge driving force. You won't find coverage of this kind of failure in the lame stream media.

Catholic Sex Scandal: Blame The Dirty Hippies!

Posted 5/19/11 at 10:03am by jamie

So the Catholic Church has found their scapegoat when it comes to the problem of their priests keeping it in their pants:

A long-awaited study on the “causes and context” of the priest child sexual abuse scandal, commissioned by U.S. bishops in 2006 and released Wednesday, blames the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, not celibacy or homosexuality, for the crisis that has rocked the Roman Catholic church.

While the report largely
paints the crisis as a historical blip in the history of
the church, “this in no way should lull us as a church into complacency,” said Diane Knight of Milwaukee, who chairs the bishops’ National Review Board.

The study by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City found no single cause for the crisis, but said child abuse by priests increased in the ’60s, peaked in the ’70s, was in “sharp decline by 1985” and the number of new reports “continues to remain low.”

So what this report is saying is that the Catholic Church can't resist the temptations of society. Sure I'll buy that and then that ocean front property in Kentucky.

If this is all they are going to put into their "study" then we can be certain the problems will continue.

And They Really Consider Matt Drudge A "News Source"?

Posted 5/18/11 at 5:32pm by jamie

There has been so much news lately of how much of a "valuable news source" Matt Drudge is. Let's look at this "valuable" information. Here's two headlines appearing at the top of his page right now:

The original story from Esquire is here. Interesting enough, when you read it you will notice how it is tagged:

Notice that last tag? It says 'humor'. In other words, this piece was a satire piece. Now this story has been up on Drudge for less than 2 hours (3:30pm est), but look at what was added to the article 3 hours before that:

Angry Constituents Heat Up Democratic Townhalls Over Healthcare Reform

Posted 5/18/11 at 2:00pm by jamie

Just check out the anger that is brewing over at townhalls:

Of course my headline is totally misleading. Instead of Healthcare and Democratic Townhalls, it's actually Republican Townhalls and the issue of taxes, but my headline might get the media to actually notice that the Republicans are getting heat at townhalls over taxes and Medicare.

So, in this case, Rep. Dan Webster (R-FL) was confronted by many angry voters over the denial of raising corporate taxes or taxes on the wealthy. At one point he even threatened to kick out a voter, who kept pushing him on a question he refused to answer.

Where's the media outrage? Where's the flashing red light on Drudge or hours of "First Amendment violation" rhetoric on Fox?

Simple - the media don't care! Think about why. All the media people stand to lose if corporate taxes are raised or the top 2% end up having to pay their fair tax burden. They don't want people to know that there is a majority of Americans who are frustrated with the lower 98% paying for everything and getting more and more taken away.

If we can't get news of this outrage out in the open, then people will continue to be complacent and think they are in the minority. We really need to push these stories so that everyone can take notice and the Republicans are forced to change their tune.

Newt Gets Glittered

Newt gets glitter dumped on him at a book signing event.
Tiffany's isn't the only place Newt Gingrich can get some bling. He also can get the poor man's bling by just attending an event:

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista were hit with glittery confetti by a protester Tuesday during the couple’s appearance at a book-signing.

The man approached the Gingriches during the signing at a downtown Minneapolis hotel, dumped a cracker box full of confetti on the pair and said, “Stop the hate!”

Two Associated Press reporters witnessed the event. The man was quickly pushed out of the room by an event organizer as the Gingriches brushed confetti out of their hair and laps. The glittery material covered the table they were using for the signing.

Hopefully this guy won't face any charges, since throwing trash at people is constitutionally protected free speech. Just ask Mike Huckabee.

Rick Santorum Doesn't Believe John McCain Understands Torture

Posted 5/18/11 at 8:54am by jamie

Could you imagine a Democrat making this claim, instead of a Republican presidential contender?

Now comes presidential candidate and "enhanced interrogation" supporter Rick Santorum arguing on Hugh Hewitt's radio show that McCain simply "doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works." Yes, he's talking about the same John McCain who, in his five and a half years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, was interrogated during a program of beatings and torture.

Here's the full context of what Santorum said (via Salon):

HH: Now your former colleague, John McCain, said look, there’s no record, there’s no evidence here that these methods actually led to the capture or the killing of bin Laden. Do you disagree with that? Or do you think he’s got an argument?

RS: I don’t, everything I’ve read shows that we would not have gotten this information as to who this man was if it had not been gotten information from people who were subject to enhanced interrogation. And so this idea that we didn’t ask that question while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was being waterboarded, he doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works. I mean, you break somebody, and after they’re broken, they become cooperative. And that’s when we got this information. And one thing led to another, and led to another, and that’s how we ended up with bin Laden.

Ohio Inching Closer To Allow Concealed Weapons In Bars

Posted 5/17/11 at 5:21pm by jamie

Once the Republicans took control of the state, the craziness came out.

The Ohio House of Representatives approved two bills on Wednesday that would give Ohioans more rights to carry concealed weapons, including one that allows people to carry a gun into a bar.

The latter bill allows Ohioans who have a concealed-carry permit to carry a gun into a bar, restaurant or "open air arena" such as a sports stadium that serves alcohol. The bill prohibits the person carrying the gun from drinking alcohol at the same time.

Republican Representative Danny Bubp, a sponsor of the legislation, said the bill is necessary to make sure law abiding citizens have equal footing with criminals.

The bill is seeing strong opposition by bar and restaurant owners, as well as cities in Ohio. Even members of the NRA are opposed to such bills, and rightfully so. This type of legislation can lead to more gun violence, which in turn can lead to a public outcry for greater gun control.

But some of the reasons for this measure are what really gets me:

State Sen. Jimmy Stewart, R-Athens, voted in favor of the bill in the Senate, where it was approved in May.

The Sperminator!

Posted 5/17/11 at 7:08am by jamie

I wonder if this story will get the same media attention as say John Edwards:

Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, separated after she learned he had fathered a child more than a decade ago — before his first run for office — with a longtime member of their household staff.

Shriver moved out of the family's Brentwood mansion earlier this year, after Schwarzenegger acknowledged the paternity. The staff member worked for the family for 20 years, retiring in January.

This really comes as no big shocker, except the fact that this happened ten years ago and Arnie kept it secret long enough to become the Governator. Once again, we have Republican family values in all their glory.

Crashing The (debt) Ceiling Today!

Posted 5/16/11 at 9:41am by jamie

Today is d-day, as in debt:

The U.S. government is expected to hit the $14.294 trillion debt ceiling Monday, setting in motion an uncertain, 11-week political scramble to avoid a default.

The Treasury Department plans to announce Monday it will stop issuing and reinvesting government securities in certain government pension plans, part of a series of steps designed to delay a default until Aug. 2.

The Treasury's moves buy time for the White House and congressional leaders to reach a deficit-reduction agreement that could clear the way for enough lawmakers to vote to raise the amount of money Congress allows the nation to borrow.

We are now in unprecedented territory, but that won't stop the GOP from playing games with the entire worlds financial future. Even more ironic is how this same GOP had no problem raising the debt limit every single year that Bush was in office. When they said they "want Obama to fail", they meant by doing anything possible to affect his job and this country. Hopefully the Democrats can seize message control on this and let everyone know that this is the Republicans playing politics at the cost of our financial security. If you still don't believe that, then ask why so many Republicans, including Boehner and Cantor, voted on a budget that adds to the debt just a few weeks ago.

The Birth Of A Crapspiracy Theory - The Right Thinks Blogger Only Took Down Their Blogs

Posted 5/14/11 at 9:16am by jamie

Dale Gribble, a conspiracy theorist the right would be proud of.
This week the Blogger Platform suffered an outage that lasted over 24 hours. Blogger, which is owned by Google, is a very popular and free platform for publishing blogs. This outage affected nearly all of the blogs hosted on Blogger, but that didn't stop the right from springing into conspiracy mode. Here's RedState blogger Moe Lane:

Well, isn’t this interesting: apparently Blogger/Google has decided to remove Ann Althouse’s blog. They’re also being neither particularly helpful in either explaining why, nor sounding particularly sympathetic that it’s been taken down, either.

Wonder if this has anything to do with Ann’s objective (and thus, anti-administration) coverage of the Wisconsin protests? I certainly hope that it has nothing to do with that…

Ann Althouse quoted Moe's post and even added this tidbit:

Back in 2004, 98% of Google employees gave money to Democrats.
