Ohio's Idealogical Crusade Continues. Up Next: Abortions

Posted 6/7/11 at 8:40am by jamie

Since taking control of Ohio in January, the Republicans, lead by Governor John Kasich, have been on a rampage of right wing ideological legislation. Now the Ohio Assembly is set to take up another slice of that agenda:

Abortions in Ohio would be banned at most publicly funded hospitals, clinics and other facilities under a proposal Senate Republicans are considering putting in the state budget, a Senate GOP official told The Associated Press on Monday.

The official, who had direct knowledge of the changes being discussed, requested anonymity because the revisions were still a part of negotiations.

State senators are also weighing a separate amendment to restrict public employees' insurance from covering abortions, the official said. Not included would be those public employees of the state's two chartered counties and chartered municipalities, which account for roughly two-thirds of the cities in the state.

This can be added to the growing list of idealogical legislation either passed or in the process of being passed, which includes: stripping unions of bargaining rights, opening Ohio parks to oil drilling, stopping the voter approved casinos, allowing people to carry guns into bars, etc., etc., etc.

The Republicans have no intentions of creating jobs in Ohio. They don't care about our state's economy. All the Republicans are worried about is rushing through an agenda based upon their social agenda.

Let's Get Weiner Straight

Posted 6/6/11 at 6:31pm by jamie

As you have most likely heard by now Anthony Weiner has admitted to sending the lewd photos of himself over the internet, including the now infamous bulge shot.

I can't begin to explain how frustrating this is. It's not for the main subject of this story, his bulge and internet habits, but rather for his handling of the whole situation. Weiner went out and made false claims of being hacked and a lot of his supporters, including myself, accepted that story. He lied to us all and that is inexcusable.

If Weiner would have come out last week and said "hey I made a stupid mistake and there might be more of these out there. I apologize for this", but he didn't. He became defiant and took to lying, knowing tons more evidence was floating around the inter-tubes.

Stupid? Stupidity doesn't even begin to describe this!

Then we have the whole Andrew Breitbart angle. Breitbart has no journalistic standards what-so-ever and sure didn't exhibit any in the handling of this story, but he did get it right. I know a lot on the left will still take to blaming Breitbart, but let's be honest with ourselves; if some blogger on the left got a picture of Boehner's flannel-clad boner that he sent to some girl, it would be picked up by every other blog on the left. That's the name of the game we all play.

There is one place that I still lay blame on this story and that is with the media. Yeah they should have reported it, but they have also kept on this story non-stop. Part of the blame does go to Weiner and his crap story at the beginning, but this story still garnered much more attention from the media than did the Mark Foley story, which is very similar except the fact that Weiner wasn't engaging in this activity with underage children.

But how does Weiner get off?

Making America More Stupid, One Wink At A Time

Posted 6/6/11 at 3:20pm by jamie

I'm sure by now everyone has heard how Sarah Palin claimed that Paul Revere's famous ride was to warn the British. Well now she is trying to claim that she was okity-dokity on her claims:

“You realize that you messed up about Paul Revere, don’t you?” “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace asked the potential 2012 presidential candidate.

“I didn’t mess up about Paul Revere,” replied Palin, a paid contributor to the network.

“Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there. That, hey, you’re not going to succeed. You’re not going to take American arms. You are not going to beat our own well-armed persons, individual, private militia that we have,” she added. “He did warn the British.”

As Bob Cesca points out, everyone here was British at that time (well except the Indians, but I'll let you slide on that one Bob).

But lust trumps stupidity, so Palin's cult of followers is taking to her defense. Not only are they trying to rewrite Wikipedia, but they are also writing op-eds. The only problem here is that Andrew Malcom, author of the op-ed in today's LA Times, apparently didn't touch base with Sarah to get the stories straight:

..the British were coming. Less known, obviously, is the rest of the evening's events in which Revere was captured by said redcoats and did indeed defiantly warn them of the awakened militia awaiting their arrival ahead and of the American Revolution's inevitable victory.

Here's $15 Billion A Year That Can Be Cut From The Budget

Posted 6/3/11 at 12:04pm by jamie

Every year this country dumps $15 billion into the war on drugs. This number has continued to grow every year, yet the drug "problem" in the United States continues to grow.

So while we are talking about trimming the fat from the budget, how about we start with this huge waste? It seems a lot of world leaders are thinking the same thing:

It isn't working. It never has worked. And so long as it continues to be fought in its current form, the "war on drugs" will do little to curb the spread of illegal narcotics or prevent hundreds of thousands of people from continuing to lose their lives each year as a result of the international drug trade.

So says a panel of world leaders who called yesterday for the biggest shake-up of drug laws in half a century. "The global war on drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world," declared the Global Commission on Drug Policy. "Fundamental reforms... are urgently needed."

Now that makes sense, but not as much as what they are recommending as an alternative:

The Commission, which counts the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan along with former presidents of Brazil, Mexico and Colombia as members, believes governments must now experiment with "legal regulation of drugs." "This recommendation applies especially to cannabis," reads a major report it published in New York yesterday. "But we would also encourage other experiments in decriminalisation."

A Tale Of Two Johns And The Affairs They Had

Posted 6/3/11 at 9:27am by jamie

The news is a buzz with word that former Senator John Edwards could face indictment today for funneling campaign cash to his mistress:

Criminal charges are expected to be filed Friday against two-time Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, the result of an investigation into campaign cash allegedly funneled to the woman he had an out-of-wedlock child with.

According to The Associated Press, Edwards’s attorney, former White House counsel Gregory Craig, is headed to North Carolina on Friday and federal prosecutors are prepared to file charges. Plea deal discussions are ongoing.

This news has been brewing all week and if it wasn't for "weinergate", would have most likely been the top news story.

But what about the news of another political figure, having an affair and possibly violating federal campaign finance laws to cover it up? We're talking about the case of former Senator John Ensign, who just so happens to be a Republican.

Last month the Senate ethics committee concluded their 18 month investigation and determined that the DOJ should have not closed the case on Ensign and have referred their findings to the DOJ for prosecution. They also concluded that Ensign's activities should have lead to an expulsion from the Senate and called it one of the worst ethical violations in the history of the United States Senate.

However you would not know this by listening to the mainstream media. They hardly made mention of it, unlike that of the Edwards story, which took place long after Edwards was out of office.

This Twitter Hack The Right Will Buy

Posted 6/2/11 at 10:19am by jamie

The right refuses to buy the fact that Anthony Weiner's Twitter account may have been hacked in order to send out a lewd photo. As matter of fact the entire incident revealed a huge vulnerability in yFrog, the photosharing service the image appeared on, and the right still refuses to accept it.

Their reason for not accepting the hack story? Because Wiener hasn't contacted the FBI about the hack. But how about this story of a Twitter account being hacked?

Aides to the Republican speaker of the Ohio House say his Twitter account was hacked by a person who tweeted support for liberal causes.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that in other phony posts Speaker William Batchelder appeared to criticize Republican Gov. John Kasich or promote former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland.

House Republican caucus spokesman Mike Dittoe says someone who follows Batchelder on Twitter noticed the tweets Monday night. A GOP attorney had the company eliminate the messages.

So a Republican's Twitter account was hacked, a lawyer has handled it and there is no word about the authorities investigating yet I don't hear the right crying b.s. on the hack story. I'm sure the wingnuts and media will totally buy the story that his account was hacked and not question anything about it.

However this story does prove something - Twitter accounts can be hacked! Of course the right will say "sure they can, only when it's nasty liberals hacking the accounts of god loving Republicans!".

Rand Paul: Arrest Those Listening To Free Speech

Posted 6/1/11 at 2:11pm by jamie

Tea Party darling, Rand Paul, told Sean Hannity the following:

PAUL: I’m not for profiling people on the color of their skin, or on their religion, but I would take into account where they’ve been traveling and perhaps, you might have to indirectly take into account whether or not they’ve been going to radical political speeches by religious leaders. It wouldn’t be that they are Islamic. But if someone is attending speeches from someone who is promoting the violent overthrow of our government, that’s really an offense that we should be going after — they should be deported or put in prison.

Of course if Rand Paul had his way, he would be one of the first to be put in jail. He isn't the only one either. Suggesting a violent overthrow of the government has been spewed from other Tea Party candidates.

And look at Rand Paul has said. It's not the people who make the speech. He is wanting to arrest the people in attendance as well. This fuck-nut considers himself a "constitutionalist", yet he wants to arrest people for listening to others exercise their first amendment right.

But hey, maybe we should enact this so that all the teabaggers out there can get prosecuted. It is their hero that has suggested it after all.
