CBS/NYT Poll: American’s Support Obama’s Ideas, But Not Obama

Posted 10/26/11 at 11:12am by jamie

A new poll out by CBS and the New York Times provides some of the most interesting numbers I have seen in a long time. Right now Obama’s approval is at 46%, with his disapproval also at 46%. The numbers are even worse when it comes to his handling of job creating. There only 35% approve, while 58% disapprove.

The numbers get even more interesting when asked who they feel has a clear plan for creating jobs

Does

Does Not

President Obama 38% 56%
Republicans In Congress 20% 71%

So American’s believe the President has a better plan at creating jobs than the Republicans by almost 2:1.  What could be hurting the GOP here? Well one big issue is with their priorities. Asked who they believe the Republicans in Congress favor in their policies, the poll shows a big problem for the right:

CBO: Yes Income Disparity Has Grown

Posted 10/25/11 at 5:02pm by jamie

A new report by the Congressional Budgeting Office finds the following:

CBO finds that, between 1979 and 2007, income grew by:

  • 275 percent for the top 1 percent of households,
  • 65 percent for the next 19 percent,
  • Just under 40 percent for the next 60 percent, and
  • 18 percent for the bottom 20 percent.

Actually the bottom 20% hasn’t even kept up with cost of living and inflation. And why does the #OWS movement matter? Take a look at this in graph form, which shows the percentage of income after federal taxes and transfers:

During the period of this study the White House was mostly controlled by the Republican Party. The 2007 data also show the results of the Bush tax cuts, which benefited the top earners far more than anyone else.

If more Americans would take the time to look at the actual numbers instead of listening to talking heads then maybe they would realize that their financial hardship is because of the taxcuts our leaders love giving the rich. We constantly hear the Republican presidential field and Republican leaders say that tax cuts to the corporations and richest Americans will spark job growth, but the fact remains that this dismal job market occurred under these type of tax cuts. The last time we were even close to this the only solution was to raise taxes on this percentile. The President who decided to do that was Ronald Reagan.

Repeal Of SB5 In Ohio Gains Big Support

Posted 10/25/11 at 10:22am by jamie

A new Quinnipiac poll out today shows that repeal of the anti-union SB5 in Ohio has very nice support from the voters:

Ohio voters support 57 - 32 percent the repeal of SB 5, the centerpiece of Gov. John Kasich's legislative program, as the margin against the governor's measure has almost doubled in the last month, from 51 - 38 percent for repeal September 27, a 13-point margin, to a 25-point margin in today's Quinnipiac University poll.

If this repeal passes it could be a big boost for labor in this country. Perhaps people are starting to realize that the anti-union fervor the right has been fueling is nothing more than a strawman to distract from real budgetary problems that plague the states. A perfect example of this lies within Ohio. While Kasich is pointing to the unions as being a big source of budget problems, the people are distracted from other wasteful spending. How about Governor Kasich increasing the salary of the governor’s staff by almost double upon entering office? Sure the 1/4 million that costs Ohio taxpayers per year may not seem like much, but this kind of cronyism is exactly what builds up and leads to budget problems.

Ohio is also feeling the very costly affects of broken campaign promises. Governor Kasich and a Republican lead state legislature came into power in January of this year. Since then they have spent on their time working on extreme ideological legislation, and while Ohio continues to hemorrhage jobs, have done nothing to stimulate the state’s economy. SB5 is a perfect example of this. It does nothing to create jobs or stimulate the economy and serves only as red meat to the most extreme parts of their party.

It looks like the people of Ohio are realizing this. Governor Kasich is one of the most disliked governors in the country and his numbers continue to plummet:

Why Does MSNBC Continue To Allow A Racist On Their Network?

Posted 10/24/11 at 10:07am by jamie

TPM has some excerpts from Pat Buchanan’s new book. This one really got me:

Perhaps some of us misremember the past. But the racial, religious, cultural, social, political, and economic divides today seem greater than they seemed even in the segregation cities some of us grew up in.

Back then, black and white lived apart, went to different schools and churches, played on different playgrounds, and went to different restaurants, bars, theaters, and soda fountains. But we shared a country and a culture. We were one nation. We were Americans.

Tell that to the people who rode in the back of the bus Pat! You might be longing for the days of segregation, but black America sure isn’t.

Perhaps it’s time for MSNBC to be shut-off until they stop giving a microphone to this man.

Shorter WSJ: Think Of The Poor Rich People!

Posted 10/24/11 at 8:56am by jamie

The WSJ has launched a pity-party today for the suffering 1% of this country:

Jacqueline Siegel paces the floor of her unfinished 7,200-square-foot ballroom. The former beauty queen, with platinum-blond hair, blue eye shadow and a white minidress, clacks along the plywood construction boards in her high heels trailed by a small entourage of helpers and staff.

"This is the grand hall," she says, opening her arms to a space the size of a concert hall and surrounded by balconies. "It will fit 500 people comfortably, probably more. The problem with our place now is that when we have parties with, like, 400 people, it gets too crowded."

Grab some tissue and read on to hear the horrors as these suffering people can’t complete their 90,000 square foot home. How dare you greedy Occupy Wall Street people not consider the misfortunes of the Siegel’s and the rest of America’s elite!

Sadly this story will pull at the heart strings of many Americans. The problem is that so many in this country can’t accept the reality that they will never come close to living this lifestyle. Instead they dream on everyday that someday they may become the next Siegel’s. The other thing they won’t realize is what the Occupy Wall Street movement is doing is to help bring back the American dream by making it possible for more people to pull themselves up the economic ladder. That’s something becoming harder and harder under the current system and the ‘American dream’ has been called all but extinct now.

But there’s something that really gets me about the Siegel’s. From the article:

Why The 99% Matter

Posted 10/23/11 at 11:06am by jamie

Want to know what the outrage is about? Look no further than this:

Fifty percent of U.S. workers earned less than $26,364 last year, and those earning less than $200,000 per year - roughly 99 percent of Americans - saw their earnings fall a collective $4.5 billion.

There were fewer jobs, and overall pay was trending down -- except for the nation's wealthiest, who saw a boost.

While the incomes of the top 1percent of the country rose slightly in 2010 (from $1,909,874 in 2009 to $2,196,124 last year), their collective wage earnings rose dramatically, by about $120 billion.

Those earning at least $1 million a year (93,725 of Americans) reported payroll income totaling $224 billion - a rise of 22 percent above 2009.

And during this time American corporations have seen record profits and not been putting that money back into the economy. And how does the right (and some on the left) respond to this? They want to further decrease the tax burden of this 1% and shift that burden to the 99% who are struggling and watching their wages go down.

Class warfare? Hell yeah there’s a class warfare going on, but it’s not the one Eric Cantor wants you to think – it’s the exact opposite! The top 1% of this country is bilking the middle class for everything they got and the people are finally fed up with it. I just wish the rest of the country would wake up and stop listening to people like Rush Limbaugh (sitting comfortably in that 1%) and instead look at the facts. Limbaugh isn’t looking out for your interests or the interests of the country, he’s looking out for his own!

A Tale Of Two Wars

Posted 10/22/11 at 11:56am by jamie

That image is the iconic mark of the end of World War 2, when Americans took to the streets to celebrate. Yesterday President Obama announced that the rest of the U.S. troops serving in Iraq will be home by year’s end. He didn’t top gun onto an aircraft carrier and stand in front of a “mission accomplished” banner and make the announcement, but rather just informed the American people from the White House. The country responded pretty much with crickets.

After almost 9 years of the Iraq war, Americans were never once asked to sacrifice. This wasn’t a war waged by a nation, but rather by a President and his authority over the military.

During World War 2 taxes were high to help offset the costs of the war. Every family had risk of a loved one serving in the war when 10 million Americans were drafted into service. Every American had to give in one way or another.

During Iraq we saw taxes go down and our soldiers being forced to fight longer than they agreed to through stop loss. We dare not ask the American people to sacrifice while our soldiers are making the ultimate sacrifice.

Yesterday, before this announcement, I was in a discussion with a Republican friend on Facebook. He gave me one of the typical lines from Republicans that President Obama doesn’t support the troops. When pushed for facts to back up his claim, I never heard one. I would now like to show some ways President Bush didn’t support the troops:

Kasich To Crack Down On Exotic Pets.

Posted 10/21/11 at 3:01pm by jamie

Following the release of 55 exotic animals in northeastern Ohio this week, Governor Kasich has now said he will sign an executive order cracking down on these dangerous animals.

Wow what a great man he is! We should all cheer the governor in Oho!

Except…..

There was a crackdown on them, which was signed by the former governor, Ted Strickland. It was John Kasich who let it expire. But here’s what really gets me about the whole thing:

Rob Nichols, a Kasich spokesman, said Strickland’s executive order was unworkable because it lacked an enforcement mechanism. Nichols said that even if the ban had been in effect, the state would have had no legal authority to shut down Terry Thompson’s Muskingum County farm.

So has the state constitution changed overnight? Does the governor now have more authority than he did before? Absolutley not. This is nothing but spin by Kasich’s office to try and cover up an almost deadly mistake he made. Or perhaps this explains it:

Kasich has taken heat nationally from animal rights groups and others who questioned why he let lapse an executive order banning exotic animals which was implemented under previous Gov. Ted Strickland.

Whatever the reason we saw yet another example of how John Kasich is a poor excuse for a leader this week. Also maybe some Republicans will now understand why laws and regulations are important in our lives. They help maintain our society and keep us safe.

Quote Of The Day

Posted 10/21/11 at 12:55pm by jamie

I am stealing this from Bob Cesca because I have never read more truer words. Andrew Sullivan:

To rid the world of Osama bin Laden, Anwar al-Awlaki and Moammar Qaddafi within six months: if Obama were a Republican, he'd be on Mount Rushmore by now.

Instead the Republicans act like the President is some sort of enemy of the state or they just try to strip him of any credit and give it to others. They really are the lowest of lows in the political spectrum.

Matt Drudge’s Ultimate Spin

Posted 10/21/11 at 10:26am by jamie

Appearing on Drudge’s site today:

What a way to make it sound like Democrats are against the Obama jobs bill. But facts mean nothing to the merchant of lies and spin. Here’s the real facts from the article Drudge linked:

The 50-50 vote fell 10 short of the 60 votes needed to advance the bill, and saw two Democrats and one independent join with all 47 Republicans in sustaining a bipartisan filibuster.

Even if the two Democrats and one independent voted for it, the vote would have still failed. It’s the fact that since day one of President Obama taking office the Senate Republicans have done nothing but filibuster to the point they have shattered the record of filibusters ever in the Senate. This bill proves that the GOP is the party of no, with a large majority of people supporting the bill.

So how do real news organizations headline this story? Well let’s start with the New York Times:

Obama’s Jobs Plan Is Blocked Again by Senate Republicans

And how about Reuters?
