The Tea Party's Perceived Race Problem

Posted 12/14/11 at 4:50pm by jamie

Following up on my previous post about a new PPP poll out of likely Republican voters in Iowa, I want to point out a very important issue buried deep in the crosstabs (PDF).

Since it's inception the Tea Party has been viewed as being fueled by the fact President Obama is black. This is no dirty secret or anything and the Tea Party has constantly fought back against those claims. But when you look at the important issue of why the Tea Party would vote for someone, then you start seeing that race could be a big factor:

A lot of the Tea Party voters are more focused on someone able to beat President Obama than they are the actual issues. Compare that to people who say they aren't in the Tea Party, where 61% are more for the issues than the 26% for beating Obama.

How can the Tea Party explain this? According to this question Karl Marx could be running for President and if the Tea Party felt he could beat Barack Obama, they would vote for him.

It's this very type of question that explains why the Tea Party's favorable view has taken a serious nosedive over the past year. They get furious when we call them racists, yet their own responses to simple polling questions validate the very charges.

And there is even more proof in these crosstabs. Here's another question that I really find interesting:

Fading Newtmentum?

Posted 12/14/11 at 3:34pm by jamie

Some new polls out this week really show the problems the GOP is facing with only a little over 3 weeks before voting kicks off.

First off let's talk Iowa. This was being scene as a guarantee win for Newt Gingrich just a week ago, but that has now changed:

There has been some major movement in the Republican Presidential race in Iowa over the last week, with what was a 9 point lead for Newt Gingrich now all the way down to a single point. Gingrich is at 22% to 21% for Paul with Mitt Romney at 16%, Michele Bachmann at 11%, Rick Perry at 9%, Rick Santorum at 8%, Jon Huntsman at 5%, and Gary Johnson at 1%.

If you look at it in graph form, Ron Paul has really gained ground in the past week.

I always like looking at the graphs instead of the raw numbers because you can easily see trends. The one I see here is that Herman Cain's support didn't go to Romney or Gingrich, but rather to the more unlikely winners. Not only that, but these people have also peeled off support from the once front runners.

These numbers are the big eye catcher, but buried in the actual results (PDF) was something even more interesting

Q27 Do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion
of the Republican establishment?
Favorable........................................................ 31%
Unfavorable .................................................... 31%
Not sure .......................................................... 38%

Chuck Todd Flips The Bird On National Television, Triggering The Apocalypse

Posted 12/14/11 at 9:57am by jamie

Here comes today's outrage from the right wingers. During a lead in, in which Chuck Todd thought the cameras were off, he get's caught flipping that notorious middle finger.

This was captured by the wingnut site NewsBusters and has this added commentary:

Will there be repercussions for Todd? Stay tuned.

Even on the YouTube NewsBusters posted you have a bunch of wingnuts calling for Todd to be fired and now Fox has picked up on it.

But certainly a Republican would NEVER do something like this - would they?

OOPS! I guess they would! But certainly that was just an off day and Bush would NEVER do that again - right?

Well damn, would you look at that! And yet when these incidents happened the right didn't go into defending Bush. You know why? BECAUSE NO ONE CARED!!!

I just love how these people can't find anything real to be outraged over so they have to go into the manufactured outrage over things that mean nothing.

FCC Bans Loud Commericials

Posted 12/13/11 at 3:41pm by jamie

Ever sit there watching a show then suddenly you get that deafening boom of a really loud commercial? Well that won't be happening much longer:

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve rules implementing legislation that makes it illegal for advertisers to pump up the volume during television commercial breaks.
The law, called the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act, aims to answer the complaints of Americans who have for years protested that commercials are too loud.

"The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today took a major step toward eliminating one of the most persistent problems of the television age - loud commercials," the FCC said in a statement following the passage of the CALM rules. "Congress gave the Commission, for the first time, authority to address the problem of excessive commercial loudness."

Of course we will get another deafening sound before long. That will be the sound of Republicans complaining about "over regulation".

A Historic Reminder Of Medicare Part D

Posted 12/13/11 at 12:14pm by jamie

In 2003 Congress passed the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act, which later became known as Medicare Part D. Remember that? A lot of wonks point to it as a critical piece of legislation that helped Bush win his re-election in 2004. Of course the law didn't go into effect until 2006 and for the next year we heard horror stories on the news of seniors not able to get their medicine and the phrase "doughnut hole" entered our vocabulary. Suddenly a lot of seniors, who supported Bush in 2004, started wishing they could turn back time and take away that vote.

You know who was one of the most instrumental players in getting this past? None other than Newt Gingrich:

Newt Gingrich played the role of political godfather in pushing the Medicare prescription drug benefit into law, returning to Capitol Hill in November 2003 to deliver a pivotal speech that turned some conservative skeptics into believers.

Three days before the clock started on what would be an excruciating and historic three-hour floor vote, Republicans huddled in a House office building committee room to hear their former speaker’s vision of a modernized Medicare plan that would offer prescription drugs for seniors while subsidizing Medicare Advantage and introducing health savings accounts aimed at giving conservatives a reason — any reason — to expand the bastion of Lyndon B. Johnson’s Great Society.

Pity Party For The Rich At The "Liberal" New York Times

Posted 12/13/11 at 10:27am by jamie

This story at the New York Times has me ready to kick kittens:

The share of income received by the top 1 percent — that potent symbol of inequality — dropped to 17 percent in 2009 from 23 percent in 2007, according to federal tax data. Within the group, average income fell to $957,000 in 2009 from $1.4 million in 2007.

Analysts say the drop largely reflects the stock market plunge, and most think top incomes recovered somewhat in 2010, as Wall Street rebounded and corporate profits grew. Still, the drop alters a figure often emphasized by inequality critics, and it has gone largely unnoticed outside the blogosphere.

OMG! We should start a fund to help out the rich in their tough times! Maybe 2010 will be even better and way in the future, say in 2011, they might really recover. Oh wait.....

The author of the article apparently didn't realize what year it was. Sure the top 1% saw their income decline in 2009, as did every other person in this county. But notice that one key line in there? "most think top incomes recovered somewhat in 2010". Now since a large part of this groups income is dependent upon the stock markets, let's have a look at it from 2007 to today:

So a stock market in the 9,000 range in 2009 would cause these people to lose money, yet we are approaching those 2007 levels again, meaning these people have recovered.

But facts won't stop this pity party:

Big Government Fears At Near Record Levels

Posted 12/13/11 at 8:16am by jamie

Gallup has a new poll out showing Americans fear big government more than anything else. Here's the results:

Needless to say this poll is making its rounds on the right, but I would like to see a further breakdown of this poll, asking what fears.

It's no secret that many people don't know what laws and policies are passed until it affects them. Take the TSA body scanners. Most people believe that this is something instituted by President Obama. Little do they know this was a policy pushed through by the Bush Administration and former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who profited big time from the plan.

Or how about recent news of drones being used for law enforcement here in the U.S.? Again, this was something pushed through under the Bush administration, but also continued by the Obama administration.

Voting Rights = Voter Fraud

Posted 12/12/11 at 11:30pm by jamie

Ever wonder why we call them "right wing nut jobs"? It's because they are nuts! They are little conspiracy theory, Dale Gribble, paranoid nuts!

The latest chapter into the mind of these tinfoil hat wearing lunatics comes from John Hinderaker of Powerline:

BAMA ADMINISTRATION COORDINATING WITH LEFT-WING GROUPS ON VOTER FRAUD?

I wrote yesterday about the lightly-attended march in New York, ostensibly on behalf of voting rights, which was sponsored by a broad coalition of left-wing groups and was addressed by several Democratic politicians. While the number of participants was small, the affair had all the signs of a semi-official Democratic Party initiative. Sure enough: Nation magazine notes that Eric Holder will deliver a “major speech on voting rights” tomorrow, and links Holder’s speech to yesterday’s march:

He goes onto quote this article from The Nation talking about a speech Eric Holder gave on voting rights and then concludes with this:

So you can see how this will all come together. The Democrats will use their constituent organizations to whip up a frenzy of opposition to “voter suppression,” while DOJ launches, or threatens to launch, legal challenges to selected state statutes. This will energize the Democrats’ base by pretending that Republicans are trying to disenfranchise voters. It also may succeed in increasing the illegal votes that Democrats rely on at the margins of close elections.

Chart Fail Of The Day, Courtesy Of Fox News

Posted 12/12/11 at 8:54pm by jamie

You got to give it to Media Matters. These guys can catch anything. Today it was this chart on Fox News:

Notice something there?

It's funny how on a graph 8.6% is somehow higher than 8.8%.

I know. I deal with charts and numbers all the time being a computer guy. I make charting software so websites can track visitor analytics and all kinds of nerdy, geeky type data. But this is the simplest form of charting there is - a basic line/area chart. Now Media Matters showed the actual baselines on a mockup they did, but I decided to put this in actual chart form so everyone can see what it would look like.

Notice that big dip at the end? Well so did FOX and they couldn't have that! Instead they played with the software to make it look like the unemployment numbers have been rather stagnant.

I guess they really do understand their viewers - people who can't read or comprehend but only look at pictures and go "ohhhh that bad".

I know many will say "oh yeah MSNBC does the same thing", so I do want to put this warning out right now. If you are going to make that claim, back it up with proof! There are many right wing news watch organizations out there that would have this proof, if it exists. But please don't come here thinking you can make that claim and then not prove it. I don't roll like that.

And if you do provide verifiable proof, I will gladly post it right here on this blog calling them out on it too.
