New GOP Plan - Tax Breaks, Just For Men!

Posted 2/29/12 at 2:20pm by jamie

With all the problems facing this country, this is a priority?

The American Mustache institute earlier today made this surprising announcement:

After barnstorming the Nation’s Capitol in support of the proposed Stache Act (details and white paper here), the office of of [sic] Maryland 6th district U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett informed the American Mustache Institute that the congressman has begun the process of ensuring the‘Stache Act becomes law by passing the proposal to the House Ways and Means Committee for study — an essential first step for tax legislation.

The surprising thing is not that a congressman—Rep. Bartlett, a Republican—would support the creation of another tax loophole. “The Stache Act (Stimulus to Allow for Critical Hair Expenses) aims to earn a well-deserved $250 annual tax deduction for every Mustached American for expenditures on mustache grooming supplies,” the website reads.

Forget the lunacy of creating such a tax break, being pushed through by lobbyists as another one of our elected leaders bends over and lets them give it to him. Instead the real audacity of this legislation is the sexually discriminating nature of it. Why should men get a tax deduction on mustache grooming, yet women can't get one for hair coloring and what not? Sounds like another case of the sexist GOP in action if you ask me.

Santorum Blames Gas Prices On The 2008 Recession

Posted 2/28/12 at 12:53pm by jamie

We now have a new reason why the economy collapsed in 2008:

—Rick Santorum sharpened his attack on President Barack Obama over rising gas prices, saying high energy prices caused the 2008 recession.

"We went into a recession in 2008 because of gasoline prices," Santorum told a packed hotel ballroom of supporters. "The bubble burst in housing because people couldn’t pay their mortgages because of $4 a gallon gasoline," he added.

Santorum accused Obama of advocating for higher gas prices to protect the environment.

"He actually believes this is a good thing for America, I don't," he said. "We are not here to serve the earth, but to be stewards of the earth."

And how does this lying, fear mongering, sack of crap defend his comment?

Asked about his comment after his speech, Santorum said "they were spiking in 2008, that's a fact," then he shrugged.

Yes they did spike in 2008 and contrary to the belief of many Republicans, George Bush was President then. Also when Democrats warned of the economy collapsing during that time, Republicans quickly called them fear mongers. How did that end up working out?

But the truth is that Rick Santorum is showing exactly why he is not capable of being President. To lie about the very reason that the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression occurred is just asking for it to happen again. We are supposed to learn from history or risk repeating it. The GOP seems to constantly forget that.

Letting The Terrorists Win

Posted 2/27/12 at 9:56pm by jamie

One Republican presidential hopeful today:

Newt Gingrich said it is impossible to “fix” Afghanistan and suggested the U.S. should to tell Afghan citizens to “figure out how to live your own miserable life.”

Speaking at a Republican luncheon here on Monday, Mr. Gingrich amped up his criticism of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan after a string of attacks by Afghan soldiers on American troops. ”We’re not going to fix Afghanistan,” the former House speaker said. “It’s not possible.”

His prescription:”What you have to do is say, ‘You know, you’re going to have to figure out how to live your own miserable life… Because you clearly don’t want to learn from me how to be unmiserable.’”

So we can't "fix" Afghanistan? What kind of message does that send to our troops fighting over there and the families of our fallen soldiers?

It sounds like Newt is wanting to cut and run. Wouldn't this give a clear message to the terrorists that they have won?

Now do I believe these notions? Absolutley not. I am simply repeating the very same lines of attack that the Republicans used against anyone who questioned our involvement in Iraq or Afghanistan. This was the sickening way that the Republicans used war to divide our country and now they are sitting on the other side of the fence. Even worse is that it comes from a bunch of chickenhawks, who did anything possible to get out of putting on the uniform.

Yup - here you have today's GOP.

BREAKING: 4 Students Shot At Ohio School

Posted 2/27/12 at 9:40am by jamie

A horrible start to the week:

At least four students have been injured in a shooting this morning at Chardon High School.

Multiple reports say that one suspect was arrested and police are searching for at least one other person. The boy who is in custody is being processed at the Geauga County Sheriff's office, according to reports about 9 a.m.

Geauga County Sheriff's spokesman John Hiscox confirmed there had been a shooting in the school, but would give no details shortly after 8 this morning.

A local official confirmed the number of students. He said three boys and a girl were injured. Four ambulances -- from Chardon, Kirtland, Burton and Chesterland -- are waiting at the door of the high school at 8:15 a.m.

Chardon is a very small town in north eastern Ohio, with a population just over 5,000. In towns like that everybody knows everybody and it's going to be much harder to heal. Keep the victims and town in your thoughts as they sort out what has happened.

Leading By Fear The GOP Way

Posted 2/25/12 at 7:43pm by jamie

When it comes to trying and scare the hell out of constituents the Republicans never let us down. The latest chapter of "OMG you will all die" fear mongering comes from the state that bought us one of the greatest fear mongers of all time, Dick Cheney:

State representatives on Friday advanced legislation to launch a study into what Wyoming should do in the event of a complete economic or political collapse in the United States.

House Bill 85 passed on first reading by a voice vote. It would create a state-run government continuity task force, which would study and prepare Wyoming for potential catastrophes, from disruptions in food and energy supplies to a complete meltdown of the federal government.

The task force would look at the feasibility of Wyoming issuing its own alternative currency, if needed. And House members approved an amendment Friday by state Rep. Kermit Brown, R-Laramie, to have the task force also examine conditions under which Wyoming would need to implement its own military draft, raise a standing army, and acquire strike aircraft and an aircraft carrier.

Of course Wyoming needs all the protection they can get, hence the aircraft carrier. Remember when the Bush administration was doling out homeland security money and Wyoming received over double what New York did per capita?

This is the craziness that has taken over the Republican party over the past several years. Even scarier is the number of American's who buy into this thinking. My hopes for our country's future are really diminishing with each passing day.

Very Serious Gas Prices Questions For The Very Serious Republicans

Posted 2/22/12 at 1:36pm by jamie

With gas prices going up daily the Republicans are using this as an attack against President Obama. Right now Drudge is pushing an article talking about $6 a gallon gas in Florida as his main story. The story does explain the cause of the price increases, however:

One reason for the high prices is the conflict with Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has threatened to disrupt oil shipments through the waterway due to the European Union sanctions leveled against the country over its nuclear program, causing the price of crude to skyrocket. Trading on a barrel of crude today is a little over $106.

Another reason for the high gas prices: positive economic news. The drop in the unemployment rate and improved housing market numbers have caused gas and oil prices to rise.

Now reading those two problems, I want to pose these two questions to the Republicans out there:

Someone Please Smack PolitiFact With A Dictionary

PoitiFact PolitiFarce is at it again:

In a promotional spot for his MSNBC program, Lawrence O’Donnell speaks proudly of his father attending college on the post-World War II benefits package that transformed the nation.

O’Donnell further says of the original GI Bill: "It’s the most successful educational program that we’ve ever had in this country -- and the critics called it welfare."

They did? Austin lawyer Terral Smith, a former Republican member of the Texas House, urged us to check this after seeing the ad in January.

So what did they rule?

We found no evidence of critics referring to the GI Bill as welfare. Yet some fretted that the law’s unemployment compensation element would encourage laziness. We see a touch of truth to O’Donnell’s claim, which we rate Mostly False.

Well OK, they didn't call it "welfare" verbatim, but they did say this:

Comments from Rep. Rankin about fearing a "tremendous inducement to certain elements to try to get employment compensation. It is going to be very easy… to induce these people to get on federal relief." Another Rankin comment, suggesting the proposal would reward those who delayed seeking work: "The bane of the British Empire has been the dole system." He also aired a racist comment, saying: "If every white serviceman in Mississippi… could read this so-called GI Bill, I don’t believe there would be one in 20 who would approve of it... We have 50,000 Negroes in the service from our state and in, in my opinion, if the bill should pass in its present form, a vast majority of them would remain unemployed for at least another year, and a great many white men would do the same."

Democracy Is Dead, Long Live The Auction!

Posted 2/21/12 at 9:59am by jamie

The Mayans could very well be wrong that 2012 will be the end of the world, but one thing that has failed to exist this year is our democracy. Instead it is being transformed into an auction, going to the highest bidder. Leading this race to extinction is casino mogul Sheldon Adelson:

Sheldon Adelson plays as stubbornly in politics as he does in business. So the criticisms that he’s trying to personally buy the presidential election for Newt Gingrich are met with a roll of the eyes. “Those people are either jealous or professional critics,” Adelson tells me during his first interview since he and his wife began funneling $11 million, with another $10 million injection widely expected, into the former speaker’s super PAC, Winning Our Future. “They like to trash other people. It’s unfair that I’ve been treated unfair—but it doesn’t stop me. I might give $10 million or $100 million to Gingrich.”

Adelson, the 78-year-old CEO of casino giant Las Vegas Sands, certainly can afford to: With a net worth of roughly $25 billion, that $11 million, which jolted Gingrich’s flatlining presidential bid back to life, equates to 0.044% of his fortune. For someone with a $1 million net worth, the equivalent would be $440, or a two-night stay at Adelson’s Venetian casino. Adelson could personally fund an entire presidential campaign—say, $1 billion or so—and not even notice.

Adelson has been pumping millions in the failed Gingrich campaign this cycle and now he's willing to take off the gloves and go all in with up to $100 million. But why is he doing this? Well we have the right wing boogieman showing his head again:

ESPN's Total Fail

Posted 2/20/12 at 9:10am by jamie

If you don't follow sports at all (and I mean AT ALL!), then you don't know about Jeremy Lin. Lin, who is of Taiwanese decent, has been taking the NBA by storm. The 21 year old has come out of nowhere and is off to one of the best starts in NBA history, shattering tons of records. For someone who lost interest in the NBA, Lin has made the sport fun to watch again.

So how does ESPN, the biggest name in Sports media, honor such an amazing athlete? With a headline like this:

"Chink" in the armor? That's a great way to refer to one of the greatest newcomers in sporting history. ESPN has fired the writer of that article, but was that enough?

In the print media business (traditional and online) there are filters between the writers and readers. These filters are called 'editors'. A writer authors their piece, then they send it to the editor before that article appears to the public. Does ESPN not engage in this most important practice of journalism, or did the editor who approved this headline get a free pass?

I think ESPN has more to answer to on this and until then they have become a total fail in sports reporting and journalism as a whole. Great job ESPN! You are the voice of American sports media and you just came off as the biggest bunch of racist idiots around.
