The Right's Disgraceful Spin On Trayvon Martin

Posted 3/31/12 at 3:08pm by jamie

The latest spin the right is coming up with to dismiss the Trayvon Martin killing is that lots of people are killed everyday. Rich Lowry at the National Review has even compiled a list and declares this:

Everything about the Trayvon Martin case is a matter of contention. About this, though, there should be no doubt: If Martin had been shot by a black classmate, if he had been caught in a random crossfire, if he had looked at a gang member the wrong way, his death would have been relegated to the back pages of the local newspaper. Not a cause, not even a curiosity: Just another dead young black man. Nothing to see here. Please, move on.

And here we see the total failure of the right to understand the situation. It's not that Trayvon was murdered. It's the fact that the shooter was taken into police custody, questioned and then released. It's the fact that so many different accounts of what happened have come out, even from the police department. In none of the stories Lowry posts is this the case.

But the right just doesn't get it. Or maybe they do get it and are so hellbent on spinning this into something it's not that they will say or do anything. It's kind of like the earlier excuses that racism couldn't be a factor because Trayvon was black and Zimmerman was Hispanic. You know, because a Hispanic couldn't be racist against blacks or vice-a-versa.

Sadly we may never know what happened on the stormy February night in the Sunshine State when Trayvon lost his life. Even if facts do come out, they will be quickly muddied with spin from all sides of the aisle. That makes this tragic loss of life that much more horrible. Everyone needs to relax and work towards a common goal of finding out what happened and how to prevent it from happening again in the future. Stop the spin, stop the bs!

Haley Barbour's Serious Iran Problem

Posted 3/30/12 at 12:11pm by jamie

Not even a year ago many in the Republican Party were pushing for Haley Barbour, aka Boss Hogg, to run for President. Imagine if he did and this came out:

GOP power broker Haley Barbour's lobby shop, BGR Group, represents a Russian bank that has financed a company that helped build Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, according to corporate documents and lobbying disclosure records. The bank is owned by a secretive oligarch, Mikhail Fridman, who has met at least twice with White House officials in the last few years, according to visitor logs.

Barbour, one of the most influential Republicans within the party, considered a bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination and has been speculated about as a possible vice-presidential pick. Last year, he called Iran "the number one threat to peace and stability."

So while the GOP beats the war drums against Iran, one of their key players is actually helping Iran gain the reasons for such an attack. Amazing how these Republicans work.

Of course such actions are no stranger to Republicans. In the 90's, when Dick Cheney was running Halliburton and we had numerous sanctions in against Iran, Cheney's company was doing the exact same thing. It must really be a Republican thing; make money from the "enemy" and then send our children in to fight them in a war. These guys make Mr. Scrooge look like Mother Theresa.

Rick's Slip

Posted 3/30/12 at 10:00am by jamie

While speaking to a rally at Janesville, Wisconsin yesterday, Rick Santorum almost made a slip that sounds like it maybe the worst of racial slurs:

Transcript:

"We know, we know the candidate Barack Obama, what he was like. The anti-war government nig- uh, the uh America was a source for division around the world."

So what do you think? Did Rick almost call the President of the United States the N-word? It sure sounds like it and I can't think of much else that would fit in there.

Clear Channel Laying Off Locally

Posted 3/30/12 at 9:31am by jamie

Clear Channel is doing some big layoffs here in the Cincinnati market:

Tony Bender, Program Director for 55KRC and ESPN 1530, is gone. He writes "23 years. It was a good run. Tomorrow will be a good day."

Also gone is traffic man Brian Pitts. Another casualty was 700 WLW Promotions Director Sherry Rowland. She tells Local 12 News she was "laid off due to budget cuts." She posted on her Facebook page "ended work at Clear Channel Communications, Inc yesterday as a promotion director for 700WLW, Cincinnati ESPN 1530 and Fox Sports 1360."

Also gone, Mark Bianchi Digital Sales Manager

.

But after some Googling it doesn't appear to be limited to Cincinnati:

Word is filtering in from a growing number of CLEAR CHANNEL MEDIA & ENTERTAINMENT radio markets of a lot of downsizing taking place.

ALL ACCESS contacted CLEAR CHANNEL, and VP/Marketing & Entertainment ANGEL ARISTONE confirmed the layoffs: "We are constantly evaluating our organization and structure to make sure we are as well positioned as possible to continue to lead in the evolving marketplace.

I just wonder how much of this could be from Rush Limbaugh and the advertisers pulling out from his show? Of course it could also be the fact that Bain Capital owns Clear Channel and we know that Mitt Romney likes firing people.

Dan Riehl Pushes Off Old Photo Of Zimmerman As Something New

Posted 3/29/12 at 1:40pm by jamie

ABC obtained the following video surveillance of George Zimmerman being walked into the police station not long after murdering Trayvon Martin:

This week claims came out that Martin had attacked Zimmerman and bloodied his head and broke his nose. In the video there is no visible sign of injuries, though in Zimmerman's defense he could have been cleaned up by EMTs at the scene.

But this hasn't stopped the right wing conspiracy theories. Here's Dan Riehl:

With this mugshot everywhere, what was the point in claiming their video reveals anything given that Zimmerman was treated at the scene and likely cleaned up? Also, as Tom Maguire pointed out, swelling and bruising often don't appear until the next day after a physical confrontation of some sort. What a bunch of nonsense that only inflames an already dangerous situation from ABC.

Gee, no obvious swelling, no bruising at that point. Did we really need some grainy video to throw fuel on a fire, while telling us what we already knew? Of course not. But ABC did it anyway.

Guilty Plea In Federal Fraud Charges Against Former Massey Superintendent

Posted 3/29/12 at 12:12pm by jamie

Looks like a little bit of justice is coming for the families of the 29 miners killed in a West Virginia mine blast in 2010:

The former superintendent of a southern West Virginia mine where an explosion killed 29 workers pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal fraud charge.

Gary May of Bloomingrose, the highest-ranking Massey Energy official charged in connection with the blast, faces up to five years in prison when sentenced Aug. 9.

May pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Irene Berger in Beckley to conspiracy to defraud the federal government. The charge stems from his actions at the Upper Big Branch mine.

Prosecutors said May manipulated the mine ventilation system during inspections to fool safety officials and disabled a methane monitor on a cutting machine a few months before the explosion on April 5, 2010. It wasn’t clear from court papers whether the device was ever fixed.

You may recall that the CEO of Massey Energy, Don Blankenship, is a big Republican backer who opposes any government regulation, so it should come as no shock that one of his people would engage in such an activity. This should really serve as a reminder that government regulations, while a pain at times, do save lives. If they were adhered to in this case then these 29 people would still be alive. Instead Blankenship's company decided to try and run under the very mantra that the GOP constantly pushes - letting business regulate themselves.

Common Man Romney

Posted 3/27/12 at 11:27am by jamie

Mitt Romney is building a new home and it sounds so much like the everyday home we find here in middle America:

At Mitt Romney’s proposed California beach house, the cars will have their own separate elevator.

There’s also a planned outdoor shower and a 3,600-square foot basement — a room with more floor space than the existing home’s entire living quarters.

Those are just some of the amenities planned for the massive renovation of the Romneys’ home in the tony La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego, according to plans on file with the city.

YES - the car elevator! I personally have two and a car escalator just in case of emergencies.

Then there's this other feature we all share:

A project this ambitious comes with another feature you don’t always find with the typical fixer-upper: its own lobbyist, hired by Romney to push the plan through the approval process.

Actually Romney might not be as well off as we all think. I don't see anything about a special elevator for his lobbyist. I thought everyone had one of those?

But I really hope the Mittster treats that lobbyist right so that he can get the ball rolling. I would hate to think of the Romney clan having to suffer through much more time at their $10 million shack in New Hampshire.

FTC Pushing For Tougher Online Consumer Privacy

Posted 3/27/12 at 9:50am by jamie

Data mining the social and purchasing trend of online users has been a growing practice and one that has a very eerie "big brother" feeling. The FTC has just concluded a report into the practice and is pushing for tougher laws to allow users to opt out of such practices:

The agency, the Federal Trade Commission, called on Congress to enact legislation regulating so-called data brokers, which compile and trade a wide range of personal and financial data about millions of consumers from online and offline sources. The legislation would give consumers access to information collected about them and allow them to correct and update such data.

The agency also sent a cautionary signal to technology and advertising companies regarding a “Do Not Track” mechanism that allows consumers to opt out of having their online behavior monitored and shared. It warned that if companies did not voluntarily provide a satisfactory Do Not Track option, it would support additional laws that mandate it.

The recommendations, part of a sweeping set of guidelines in an F.T.C. report on Monday, represent the government’s latest move to address the issue of consumer privacy.

Hopefully Congress listens to the recommendations and moves to protect the end user, but I'm not very optimistic. We are dealing with an issue where big money will play a vital role, especially through campaign contributions and lobbying. When those forces are put into play the people always end up on the losing end.

Santorum Implodes: "It's Bullsh*t"

Posted 3/26/12 at 9:35am by jamie

Rick Santorum had a very, very, very bad day:

In directing what appeared to be a new level of vitriol toward Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum on Sunday described his rival as "the worst Republican in the country to put up against Barack Obama." Santorum later, however, bristled at the notion that he was referring to anything other than Romney's position on health care.

After a rally at the South Hills Country Club here, Santorum asked Republicans to "pick any other Republican in the country" than GOP presidential front-runner Romney, based on issues that make the former Massachusetts governor "uniquely disqualified" to run against Obama.

Reporters swarmed him for clarification, only to have Santorum testily reply that it was unreasonable to take his comment outside the context of health care.

This is a typical politician response; they say something they know will come back to bite them and then claim it was taken out of context. Sometimes they can pull it off, but in this case Rick did nothing but make the matter worse:

Shouldn't Religious Freedom Apply To All Religions?

Posted 3/24/12 at 12:50pm by jamie

Here's a sad story out of the U.K.:

Alzheimer's sufferer Dorothy Griffiths, 87, was found sitting down after staff heard a bang and a carer went to the office for help to lift her.

But agency nurse Abdul Bhutto, who was in charge, said they would have to wait.

Carer Zoe Shaw told the Sheffield hearing: "It took between five and ten minutes because he was praying upstairs in the office on his prayer mat. A staff member told me we had to wait for him to finish."

An ambulance was not called for nearly four hours after Mrs Griffiths fell from bed and cut her head and suffered a gash to her hip at the privately-run Valley Park Nursing Home in Wombwell, near Barnsley.

She died later in hospital. Mr Bhutto failed to appear at the inquest and a summons had to be issued for him to attend the resumed hearing later in the year.

The "all brown people are bad" wingnuts have jumped on this story already as a sign of the evil Muslims taking over the world. For example, at Jihad Watch they start off with this:

The message that sends is that his prayer time is more valuable than a non-Muslim's life, even when a prompt response to an emergency is an essential function of his job.
