Tea Party Darling Rick Scott Hates Democracy

Posted 5/29/12 at 10:44am by jamie

Rick Scott, the Republican Governor of Florida, has devised a plan to steal the state for Mitt Romney. Via Think Progress:

On Wednesday, November 7, Mitt Romney could wake up as the President-elect thanks to one man: Florida Governor Rick Scott. With little fanfare, Scott is undertaking an audacious plan to kick thousands of Floridians off the ballot just before this year’s elections. It’s a sloppy, chaotic and possibly illegal plan. But it just might work.

Even state officials are admitting it has problems:

4. Florida election officials have acknowledged that, as a result of Scott’s voter purge, eligible voters will be removed from the rolls. “It will happen,” Mary Cooney, a spokeswoman for the Broward County Supervisor of Elections, told ThinkProgress. On or about June 9, anyone who hasn’t responded to the ominous and legalistic letter informing them of their purported ineligibility will be removed from the rolls. Some eligible voters won’t have been able to respond by that time due to travel, work obligations, family obligations or confusion as to the purpose of the letter. Some will forget to open it. Others may have moved.

This is a slap in the face to our nation and constitution. Of course America's right has proven time and time again that they really don't like the document our nation is built on. They claim they do, but when push comes to shove they only cling to the part about carrying guns.

Our Tech President

Posted 5/24/12 at 10:15am by jamie

Barack Obama has been the most tech savvy President we have ever had. Living in an age of technology, this is increasingly important and with a new directive this week, he has proven how serious he is about the issue:

U.S. President Barack Obama has ordered all major government agencies to make two key services available on mobile phones within a year, in an effort to embrace a growing trend toward Web surfing on mobile devices.

Obama, in a directive issued Wednesday, also ordered federal agencies to create websites to report on their mobile progress. The websites are due within 90 days.

Innovators in the private sector and the government have used the Internet and powerful computers to improve customer service, but "it is time for the federal government to do more," Obama said in the memo. "For far too long, the American people have been forced to navigate a labyrinth of information across different government programs in order to find the services they need."

Many government services are not optimized for smartphones or tablets, and other services aren't available at all on those devices, Obama wrote.

"Americans deserve a government that works for them anytime, anywhere, and on any device," Obama said in a statement. "By making important services accessible from your phone and sharing government data with entrepreneurs, we are giving hard-working families and businesses tools that will help them succeed."

NY Republicans Trying To Do Away With Anonymous Online Posting

Posted 5/23/12 at 10:06am by jamie

Here's the summary from Slashdot:

"Republican Assemblyman Jim Conte said, '[this] turns the spotlight on cyberbullies by forcing them to reveal their identity.' Republican Senator Thomas O'Mara added, '[this will] help lend some accountability to the Internet age.' The two are sponsoring a bill that would ban any New York-based websites from allowing comments (or well, anything) to be posted unless the person posting it attaches their name to it. But the bill also goes further, saying New York-based websites, such as blogs and newspapers, must 'remove any comments posted on his or her website by an anonymous poster unless such anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post.'"

What strikes me as highly interesting with this is that Republicans are always against actual anti-bullying legislation. They always consider it part of a nanny state type conspiracy. But now we have them going after bullying online, so long as it's done anonymously.

Are they really this stupid?

First off, nothing you do online is really anonymous. There are IP logs that always trace back to you. Thinking you are really anonymous is really lying to yourself.

Arizona Tax Payers Footing The Bill For Birthers

Posted 5/22/12 at 9:26am by jamie

It's amazing how Republicans complain about the wasting of tax payer money, but when it comes to one of the most asinine conspiracy theories ever, spending that money is fine:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's volunteer investigation into documents pertaining to President Barack Obama's residency status now includes the services of a taxpayer-funded deputy, according to Arpaio.

The deputy joined Mike Zullo, a volunteer member of Arpaio's cold-case posse, in Hawaii this week in part due to "security issues," according to Arpaio, and because the investigation has progressed.

"It's one deputy, so what? We have security issues, too, that I can't got into," Arpaio said on Friday. "For six months we were not spending any money. When you're doing investigations sometimes things change, you put more resources into it."

The cold-case posse has spent about $40,000 on the investigation so far, according to the Sheriff's Office. The posse is funded through donations.

Arpaio has in the past touted the investigation's total reliance on donated funds and volunteers, but the investigation now requires the use of a sworn deputy.

Maybe someone should ask Sheriff Joe to produce his birth certificate.

Another Right Wing Lie That People Need Reminded Of

Posted 5/16/12 at 11:35am by jamie

Face it - the GOP has a really bad memory. It became evident in January of 2009, when Republicans suddenly realized our economy was in serious trouble the day President Obama was sworn into office. They constantly ignored that the great recession had already been going on for over a year and anytime someone on the left tried to remind them, the Republicans stuck their fingers in their ears and shouted "na na na - I can't hear you. Stop blaming Bush!".

As matter of fact it has been so bad that the Republicans have either ignored or tried to rewrite a big part of this history of this recession - TARP. They constantly act like TARP was an Obama planned, enacted by him while in office. But here are the key facts around TARP:

  • During the 2008 campaign, Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain took an unprecedented step to suspend his campaign to work on TARP.
  • TARP passed the Senate in October of 2008, with both Senator Obama and Senator McCain voting for it.
  • On October 8, 2008, President George W. Bush signed Tarp into law.

There were a number of Republicans in the House that voted against TARP (108 to be exact), so President Bush could have pulled out the veto pen, especially given the fact that the House was 20 some votes short of a veto-proof majority. But he didn't. Instead he signed it into law and became the President that actually enacted TARP.

Another interesting supporter of TARP was Paul Ryan. This is the GOP's man when it comes to budget and monetary policy. They always turn to him for guidance and plan, yet they ignore the fact that he supported a key piece of legislation that the GOP now opposes.

Mitt Romney And The Loss Of Facts

Posted 5/16/12 at 9:33am by jamie

The AP has done some great fact checking into a speech Mitt Romney gave yesterday on the economy. It turns out, to no shock, that Romney is echoing many of the lies that the right has constantly been pushing for the past several years. Here's one of my favorites:

ROMNEY: "America counted on President Obama to rescue the economy, tame the deficit and help create jobs. Instead, he bailed out the public sector, gave billions of your dollars to the companies of his friends, and added almost as much debt as all the prior presidents combined."

THE FACTS. Hardly. Presidents from George Washington through George W. Bush ran the national debt up to $10.62 trillion, the amount it was on the day Obama took office. Today, it is $15.67 trillion, according to the Treasury Department's Bureau of Public Debt. So it has gone up by $5.05 trillion under Obama. That's roughly half of the amount amassed by all the other presidents combined.

In short, the debt has gone up by about half under Obama. Under Ronald Reagan, it tripled.

Obama's Gay Marriage Stance: 3rd Rail Or Ahead Of The Curve

Posted 5/14/12 at 9:33am by jamie

Since President Obama announced his support of gay marriage last week the pundits have gone into overdrive. Some are saying this could spell the end to his presidency, while others are saying it shows he embraces a future. A new poll out by CBS sheds a little bit of light into this:

A new CBS News/New York Times Poll shows a solid majority of Americans support legal recognition for same-sex couples - though not necessarily through the official act of marriage - and the number of people who do support full marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples is significantly higher among younger generations.

Overall, 38 percent of those who responded to the survey said same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, just like any other couple. Another 24 percent said civil unions should be used to grant same-sex couples legal rights similar to male-female partnerships. Combined, that means 62 percent - close to two thirds - of Americans believe that same-sex unions should be recognized by law.

Of all those who participated, 33 percent said there should be no legal recognition for same-sex couples.

What's really interesting is when you look at how public opinion has changed over the years:

The Right's Twisted Comparison Of Young Obama To Young Romney

Posted 5/11/12 at 9:09am by jamie

The wingnuts are in full "he did it to" school yard defense mode of Mitt Romney terrorizing a gay high school student. For a reminder, here is what a young Mitt Romney did in high school:

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

Tackled a fellow student, held him down and cut his hair while he was screaming and crying. Now compare that to what the right is using against Obama. This is from “Dreams From My Father”

Teasing Or Assault?

Posted 5/10/12 at 10:39am by jamie

Today's Washington Post is out with a story of a young Mitt Romney:

Mitt Romney returned from a three-week spring break in 1965 to resume his studies as a high school senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School. Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

Michele Bachmann Loves Universal Healthcare And Welfare So Much....

Posted 5/9/12 at 1:56pm by jamie

That she decided to become a citizen of a nation known for it!

Rep. Michele Bachmann is now officially a Swiss miss.

Bachmann (R-Minn.) recently became a citizen of Switzerland, making her eligible to run for office in the tiny European nation, according to a Swiss TV report Tuesday.

Arthur Honegger, a reporter for public broadcaster Schweizer Fernsehen, told POLITICO the Swiss consulate in Chicago has confirmed that the former Republican presidential candidate became a citizen March 19.

And Bachmann said something I can agree with:

Asked if she would run for office in Switzerland — as she is now eligible to do — Bachmann joked that the competition “would be very stiff because they are very good,” referring to the parliamentarians behind her.

Yes they are! Switzerland used to have a healthcare mess much like ours here in the good ole' U.S. Luckily their "very good" parliamentarians were able to come together and create a decent healthcare program. They weren't out there crying "socialism' and saying how others were going to destroy their country. Nope - that is left to American politicians like Michele Bachmann.
