If Drudge Is Your News Source Then You Missed Today's Big Story

Posted 7/31/12 at 1:58pm by jamie

So many people rely on the Drudge Report as their go to news source. For those people they would most likely miss the biggest news story of the day:

Romney aide loses cool, curses at press in Poland

The traveling press secretary for Mitt Romney lost his cool and cursed at reporters who attempted to ask questions of the Republican presidential candidate in a public plaza near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw Tuesday.

After Romney paid his respects to Poland's war dead and shook hands with a small gathering of the nation's military veterans, the GOP contender walked approximately 100 yards away from the memorial as he chatted with Warsaw's mayor.

I'm not going to analyze this blowup. If you want tons of reaction, Memeorandum is the place to go right now with over 47 links to various blogs and news sites discussing this blowup.

What I want to talk about is Matt Drudge and his Drudge Report. Far too often we hear that he is the go to news source. If that's the case, then why is it that three hours after this story broke, Drudge has not mentioned it once? You can't say he hasn't heard the story, and if so then his title of king aggregator of news is highly over-stated.

The only logical explanation for this miss of a top news story is that it's bad for Romney. Drudge has been working hard this cycle to carry the torch for Mitt. When the primary was in full swing, Drudge would even ignore stories that made Romney look bad, but push every little story about his opponents.

GOP Rep: Too Much Tea!

Posted 7/31/12 at 12:44pm by jamie

Rep. Richard Hanna (R-NY) has taken his parties leadership to task. In an interview with the Post-Standard editorial board, he had this to say:

I have to say that I’m frustrated by how much we — I mean the Republican Party — are willing to give deferential treatment to our extremes in this moment in history.

[SNIP]

We render ourselves incapable of governing when all we do is take severe sides. If all people do is go down there and join a team, and the team is invested in winning and you have something that looks very similar to the shirts and the skins, there’s not a lot of value there.

[SNIP]

I would say that the friends I have in the Democratic Party I find ... much more congenial — a little less anger.

And these extremes are pushing moderates out of the Republican Party. Rep Steven LaTourette (R-OH) announced yesterday that he would be retiring from Congress after this term. The news was a shock to GOP leadership, especially Speaker John Boehner, which LaTourette had a close relationship with. LaTourette is also the most moderate Republican of the Ohio delegation.

One of the things that can be to blame for moderates being upset over GOP leadership is the lack of leading a country in dire times. Instead of taking up important issues, GOP leadership has decided to take up political issues:

And the decision by Majority Leader Eric Cantor to schedule several votes on abortion, reaffirming that the nation’s motto is, in fact, “In God We Trust” and other social issues has angered moderates for more than a year.

Welcome To Precrime!

Posted 7/30/12 at 12:37pm by jamie

Without the precogs:

Crime fighters have long used brains and brawn, but now a new kind of technology known as “predictive policing” promises to make them more efficient.

A growing number of law enforcement agencies, in the US and elsewhere, have been adopting software tools with predictive analytics, based on algorithms that aim to predict crimes before they happen.

The concept sounds like something out of science fiction and the thriller “Minority Report” based on a Philip K. Dick story.

Without some of the sci-fi gimmickry, police departments from Santa Cruz, California, to Memphis, Tennessee, and law enforcement agencies from Poland to Britain have adopted these new techniques.

The premise is simple: criminals follow patterns, and with software — the same kind that retailers like Wal-Mart and Amazon use to determine consumer purchasing trends — police can determine where the next crime will occur and sometimes prevent it.

The new system has seen dramatic decreases in crime where this has been implemented, which is a good thing. The key to those decreases has been an increase in patrols and presence. The only thing that scares me is that we decide to go overboard on it and start arresting people for "precrime".

Face it, software and algorithms can fail and will in this case. If we keep it at increased patrol and investigation, fine. If we move towards a Tom Cruise style arrest then we are in serious trouble.

Romney Still Loves Mandates

Posted 7/30/12 at 10:31am by jamie

Mitt Romney still loves mandates and even universal health care. Here's what he said on his Israel trip:

“Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the G.D.P. in Israel? Eight percent,” he said. “You spend eight percent of G.D.P. on health care. You’re a pretty healthy nation. We spend 18 percent of our G.D.P. on health care, 10 percentage points more. That gap, that 10 percent cost, compare that with the size of our military — our military which is 4 percent, 4 percent. Our gap with Israel is 10 points of G.D.P. We have to find ways — not just to provide health care to more people, but to find ways to fund and manage our health care costs.”

But as Think Progress notes, Israel's healthcare is nothing like that here in the U.S.:

Israel spends less on health care because of a universal health system that requires everyone to have insurance. Every Israeli citizen has the obligation to purchase health care services through one of the country’s four HMOs since government officials approved the National Health Insurance Law in 1995. People pay for 40 percent of their HMO’s costs through income-related contributions collected through the tax system, and the state pays the remaining 60 percent. And by many standards, Israelis are getting better health care than U.S. citizens. The infant mortality rate is much lower, and its mortality rate due to heart disease is half the U.S. rate.

Still Don't Think Race Is A Factor In Florida Voter Suppression?

Posted 7/28/12 at 11:10am by jamie

This right here should spark a big national discussion about the state of our nation in 2012:

In the debate over new laws meant to curb voter fraud in places like Florida, Democrats always charge that Republicans are trying to suppress the vote of liberal voting blocs like blacks and young people, while Republicans just laugh at such ludicrous and offensive accusations. That is, every Republican except for Florida’s former Republican Party chairman Jim Greer, who, scorned by his party and in deep legal trouble, blew the lid off what he claims was a systemic effort to suppress the black vote. In a 630-page deposition recorded over two days in late May, Greer, who is on trial for corruption charges, unloaded a litany of charges against the “whack-a-do, right-wing crazies” in his party, including the effort to suppress the black vote.

In the deposition, released to the press yesterday, Greer mentioned a December 2009 meeting with party officials. “I was upset because the political consultants and staff were talking about voter suppression and keeping blacks from voting,” he said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. He also said party officials discussed how “minority outreach programs were not fit for the Republican Party,” according to the AP.

This isn't some blogger, media type or a nobody. This guy was the head of the Florida Republican Party and under oath has admitted to meetings that Florida GOP officials held to talk about ways to stop blacks from voting. This is racism, no matter how you look at it. These are party officials, with salaries paid by the Republican Party, looking for ways at keeping Americans from partaking in their Constitutional right to vote and going as far as to segregate their attempts by race.

Today's Wingnut Outrage

Posted 7/27/12 at 11:02am by jamie

Time once again to expose the extreme hypocrisy of the wingnuts. Here's video from yesterday's White House presser:

(via Real Clear Politics)

Reporter: What city does this Administration consider to be the capital of Israel? Jerusalem or Tel Aviv?

Jay Carney, White House press secretary: Um... I haven't had that question in a while. Our position has not changed. Can we, uh...

Reporter: What is the capital [of Israel]?

Jay Carney: You know our position.

Reporter: I don't.

And then you get the total disrespect of the crazies from the right wing media:

Lester Kinsolving, World Net Daily: No, no. She doesn't know, that's why she asked.

Carney: She does know.

Reporter: I don't.

Kinsolving: She does not know. She just said that she does not know. I don't know.

Carney: We have long, lets not call on...

Kinsolving: Tel Aviv or Jerusalem?

Carney: You know the answer to that.

Kinsolving: I don't know the answer. We don't know the answer. Could you just give us an answer? What do you recognize? What does the administration recognize?

Carney: Our position has not changed.

Kinsolving: What position?

But let's forget the asshole from World Net Daily that thinks he can just go into the White House and yell at the press secretary. We have become used to that from Republicans, which embrace it from John Boehner on down. Instead let's focus on the question and the response from the wingnuts. For example, king wingnut Glenn Reynolds:

Mittplomacy

Earlier we heard about Mitt Romney blasting the U.K., accusing them of not being ready for the Olympic. It turns out it isn't the first time he has bashed the other side of the pond. In his book, No Apology, this is what Romney had to say about them:

England [sic] is just a small island. Its roads and houses are small. With few exceptions, it doesn't make things that people in the rest of the world want to buy. And if it hadn't been separated from the continent by water, it almost certainly would have been lost to Hitler's ambitions. Yet only two lifetimes ago, Britain ruled the largest and wealthiest empire in the history of humankind. Britain controlled a quarter of the earth's land and a quarter of the earth's population.

Yeah small roads and houses. That means they should never have any power!

I have never been so scared as to think that this guy could be our President next year. If hat happens then our country is really on a path of self destruction.

Egomaniac Mitt!

Posted 7/26/12 at 12:01pm by jamie

A couple stories out today that highlight the elevated ego of one Mitt Romney. First out of London, we have Mitt already pissing off one of our biggest allies:

The US presidential candidate Mitt Romney has questioned the readiness of London 2012, saying there have been "disconcerting signs" in the buildup to the Games – but said the focus would soon switch to celebrating the athletes.

Before meetings with David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband on Thursday, he told US television: "It is hard to know just how well it will turn out."

Romney told NBC News: "There are a few things that were disconcerting. The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials – that obviously is not something which is encouraging."

David Cameron has already hit back:

The prime minister has hit back at comments from the US presidential candidate Mitt Romney querying Britain's readiness for the Olympics, urging the country to "put its best foot forward" and ensure they are remembered as "the friendly Games".

On a visit to the Olympic Park with the London 2012 organising committee chairman, Lord Coe, before Friday's opening ceremony, Cameron said the Games were an opportunity to promote Britain despite the gloomy economic backdrop.

"This is a time of some economic difficulty for the nation, everyone knows that. But look at what we're capable of achieving even at a difficult economic time. Look at this extraordinary Olympic Park, built from nothing in seven years," he said.

But the Romney ego is nothing new. In 2002, look at the commemorative Olympic pin he had commissioned:

Overwhelming Support For Better Gun Control Laws

Posted 7/26/12 at 10:01am by jamie

Following last weeks massacre in Aurora, Colorado, a new poll shows an overwhelming number of people support better gun control regulations. The biggest kicker? This is a poll of NRA members!

  • 87 percent of NRA members agree that support for Second Amendment rights goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.
  • There is very strong support for criminal background checks among NRA members and gun owners:
  • 74 percent of NRA members and 87 percent of non-NRA gun owners support requiring criminal background checks of anyone purchasing a gun.
  • 79 percent of NRA members and 80 percent of non-NRA gun owners support requiring gun retailers to perform background checks on all employees – a measure recently endorsed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry.

And when it comes to concealed weapons:

  • 75 percent of NRA members believe concealed carry permits should only be granted to applicants who have not committed any violent misdemeanors, including assault.
  • 74 percent of NRA members believe permits should only be granted to applicants who have completed gun safety training.
  • 68 percent of NRA members believe permits should only be granted to applicants who do not have prior arrests for domestic violence.
  • 63 percent of NRA members believe permits should only be granted to applicants 21 years of age or older.

But the leaders of the NRA don't agree. They believe little Johnny should be able to walk down to the local 7-11 and buy a AK-47 and as much ammo as he wants.

So what should be done to get the NRA leadership to listen to the members? QUIT!

Double Standard: Romney Wants Time For Next President

Posted 7/24/12 at 11:58am by jamie

Steve Benen picked up on something interesting:

Mitt Romney sat down with CNBC's Larry Kudlow, and made a curious observation. He said voters who want a strong economy should vote for him, but Americans "ought to give, whichever president is going to be elected, at least six months or a year to get those policies in place."

At first blush, that may sound fairly reasonable. A president takes office, he or she needs time to put a team in place, craft an agenda, and get to work. What's more, we generally don't see the results of economic policies immediately; the agenda needs to time to take effect. In Romney's mind, six months to a year seems fair.

This does seem very fair, but why wasn't this the case in 2009?

President Obama was not even a month off the swearing in and Republican politicians and talking heads started asking where the jobs were. It was as though they had been asleep up until January 20, 2009 and didn't notice the economic havoc wreaked on our nation by one George Bush. As matter of fact, it got so bad that when people tried to say the economy was bad when Obama took office, the right started a new defense - "there you go blaming Bush".

So if Romney does win, by February of next year should we start asking why he hasn't turned the economy around? Do the Republicans want their standards applied towards their man, or is that something just reserved for Democratic Presidents. It's a very serious question and one I hope the GOP gets asked.
