After Math: 3 Separate Similar 'Dark Knight' Incidents

]America, we have a problem!

At least 3 men accused of making threats during or after watching the new Batman movie have been arrested in separate incidents, underscoring moviegoers' anxieties and heightened security in the wake of a deadly mass shooting at a Colorado theater showing the film.

A Maine man was arrested when he told authorities that he was on his way to shoot a former employer a day after watching "The Dark Knight Rises," Maine state police said Monday.

Timothy Courtois of Biddeford, Maine, had been stopped for speeding, and a police search of his car found an AK-47 assault weapon, four handguns, ammunition and news clippings about the mass shooting that left 12 people dead early Friday, authorities said.

Luckily none of these incidents were actually carried out, but it shows the dangers we are facing in this nation. Going to the movies used to be considered a fun and safe way to get out. Now people have to fear for their lives in movie theaters.

And when you look at the Maine incident, you get an eerie reminder of James Holmes. This guy was heavily armed, but look at what they found in his home:

Police searched Courtois' home later Sunday and found a machine gun, several other guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

Caterpillar Gives Employees A Big "F.U."

Posted 7/23/12 at 2:29pm by jamie

This just makes me sick:

JOLIET, Ill. — When it comes to dealing with labor unions, Caterpillar has long taken a stance as tough as the bulldozers and backhoes that have burnished its global reputation. Be it two-tier wage scales or higher worker contributions for health insurance, the company has been a leader in devising new ways to cut labor costs, with other manufacturers often imitating its strategies.

Now, in what has become a test case in American labor relations, Caterpillar is trying to pioneer new territory, seeking steep concessions from its workers even when business is booming.

Despite earning a record $4.9 billion profit last year and projecting even better results for 2012, the company is insisting on a six-year wage freeze and a pension freeze for most of the 780 production workers at its factory here. Caterpillar says it needs to keep its labor costs down to ensure its future competitiveness.

The company’s stance has angered the workers, who went on strike 12 weeks ago. “Considering the offer they gave us, it’s a strike we had to have,” said Albert Williams, a 19-year Caterpillar employee, as he picketed in 99-degree heat outside the plant, which makes hydraulic parts and systems essential for much of the company’s earth-moving machinery.

Their profits are skyrocketing and their CEO pay is on the rise, yet the people out there making the products are being screwed. In other words, Caterpillar is a Republican Mecca of business.

Boehner Puts Party Ahead Of The People

Posted 7/23/12 at 12:59pm by jamie

Last week I asked why the House Republican leadership was stalling on the Farm Bill, especially with corn and soy at record highs from the drought. Now we know why - politics:

Senate-passed bills to cut farm subsidies and food stamps and overhaul the financially teetering Postal Service have been put on hold by House Republican leaders wary of igniting internal party fights or risking voters' ire three months before the election.

The House is scheduled this week to take up a bill to replace the Obama administration's offshore drilling plan, and the Senate will ignore it, and some measures to reduce government red tape. What's not on the schedule are a farm bill important to farmers coping with a drought and a Postal Service bill dealing with politically unpopular but inevitable post office closings and a scaling back of mail delivery.

So our food prices are going to skyrocket because of the drought. We have legislation to help ease that pain, yet John Boehner is worried about his own party instead of the people. This is a man who does not "give a damn" about the welfare of our nation, but rather the welfare of his own party. And there you thought it was called "the people's House".

Jason Alexander On The Colorado Shooting

Posted 7/23/12 at 10:47am by jamie

Jason Alexander, or George Costanza to the Seinfeld fans out there, took to Twitter this weekend to urge action in the wake of the Batman killing spree in a Colorado theater:

I'd like to preface this long tweet by saying that my passion comes from my deepest sympathy and shared sorrow with yesterday's victims and with the utmost respect for the people and the police/fire/medical/political forces of Aurora and all who seek to comfort and aid these victims.

This morning, I made a comment about how I do not understand people who support public ownership of assault style weapons like the AR-15 used in the Colorado massacre. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AR-15

That comment, has of course, inspired a lot of feedback. There have been many tweets of agreement and sympathy but many, many more that have been challenging at the least, hostile and vitriolic at the worst.

Clearly, the angry, threatened and threatening, hostile comments are coming from gun owners and gun advocates. Despite these massacres recurring and despite the 100,000 Americans that die every year due to domestic gun violence - these people see no value to even considering some kind of control as to what kinds of weapons are put in civilian hands.

Before the last rounds are fired in these heinous crimes you can count on the pro-gun lobby already pushing the "it's not the guns fault" meme. Of course it isn't. It takes a person to operate that piece of machinery. But the same can be said for other things, like drugs. Maybe I enjoy the look and scent of cannabis. If I don't smoke it, it won't get me high, yet I still can not grow it. In other words, it's not the plants fault, yet our laws ban it.

The Jason hits on the second amendment and his interpretation is something I have always said:

Right Wing Blog Fail Of The Year!

Posted 7/22/12 at 1:15pm by jamie

There has been so much news this week that this story went pretty much unnoticed:

Connie Schultz, a Pulitzer prize-winning columnist and wife of Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, posted an E-mail exchange between herself and an unnamed, unwitting conservative blogger to her Facebook page Tuesday night.

The blogger emailed Schultz on July 9 to say, smugly: "Dear Ms. Shultz, We are doing an expose on journalists in the elite media who socialize with elected officials they are assigned to cover. We have found numerous photos of you with Sen. Sherrod Brown. In one of them, you appear to be hugging him. Care to comment?"

Schultz, of course, is married to Brown. She wrote back a day later: "Dear Mr. [Name Deleted]: I am surprised you did not find a photo of me kissing U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown so hard he passes out from lack of oxygen. He's really cute. He's also my husband. You know that, right?"

The unnamed blogger has yet to respond back to Connie. Apparently he's in an undisclosed location blaming the liberal media for his mistake.

Republicans Bash Their "Golden Budget Boy" Paul Ryan

Posted 7/21/12 at 10:03am by jamie

WOW!

The National Republican Senatorial Committee paid for an ad that attacks the Republican budget in Congress last month -- and appears to have spent quite a lot doing it.

At the time, NRSC officials did not comment on the commercial run by the Montana Republican Party on behalf of Rep. Denny Rehberg, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Jon Tester.

The spot, with an initial cost of $200,000, could only have been funded by large transfers from the NRSC, since the the Montana GOP did not have enough cash on its own. The latest federal campaign filings show that the national team transferred $540,000 to the local party -- $315,000 on June 19, the day before the ad started to run, then $45,000 on June 21 and $180,000 on June 25.

Here's the actual ad:

And how many times did Republicans tell us that the Paul Ryan budget was the fix all?

CNN: Eric Cantor's Office Wrote Loophole Into STOCK Act

Posted 7/21/12 at 8:00am by jamie

Remember back towards the end of last year when it came out that members of Congress were exempt from insider trading laws? The Senate quickly acted to fix that, rightly so, yet the House delayed acting on it. Actually it wasn't the whole House, but rather one man - Majority Leader, Eric Cantor. Here was his excuse back in December:

Cantor reportedly said he blocked the bill to give Congress more time to examine the issue. Critics of the move, however, fear that any delay could kill the bill entirely.

Well 5 months later and it finally got passed, but not before some "tweaks" went into it, by none other than Eric Cantor:

CNN is reporting that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s (R-VA) office wrote a loophole into the House version of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act (STOCK) exempting Congress members’ spouses and children from having to report stock market transactions over $1,000 in a timely manner.

The Senate version of the bill requires these transactions be reported within 45 days by both its members and their families. But a memo from the Office of Government Ethics, which oversees all federal executive branch employees, used the House version, telling them spouses and children were not subject to the rule.

Neither of the bill’s Senate co-sponsors, Scott Brown (R-MA) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), knew about the discrepancy.

“I mean, bottom line, we’re supposed to have that level of transparency and have us be treated like every other member of the United States,” Brown told CNN’s Dana Bash. “Bottom line, if we can’t do it, then — sorry, if they can’t do it — then we shouldn’t be able to do it as well.”

How Dare Cher!

Posted 7/21/12 at 3:33am by jamie

Today Cher made a comment about the tragedy in Colorado:

Both President Obama and Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney addressed the tragic Colorado movie theater shooting on Friday. Comparing their responses, Cher – who has already made her feelings about Romney quite clear – implied that Obama’s speech was more sincere.

“OBAMA! 2day He talked bout his Great Sadness off top oh his head! Romney needed 2 READ Cards 2 tell how SAD he was,” she wrote on Twitter.

I'm not all into the politicizing of what happened and really don't think her comments helped anything, but check out how one right-wing blog is covering it:

Now I can understand the criticism IF it wasn't for the fact that this very blogger has posted over 40 times about Obama using a teleprompter. 40 TIMES!

Either "zip" is a 100% total hypocrite or he is functioning on zero brain cells. Either way, this is a voice that powers the right online and reading the comments they are all buying into it big time.

GOP Blocks Lowering Taxes On American Companies And Insourcing

Posted 7/20/12 at 10:23am by jamie

What does the GOP have against lowering taxes and bringing jobs back to America?

Senate Republicans on Thursday blocked the No.1 item on the president's congressional "to-do-list," refusing to allow a vote on a bill that would give tax breaks for companies that "insource" jobs to the U.S. from overseas while eliminating tax deductions for companies that move jobs abroad.

In voting against the bill, Republicans raised both substantive and procedural problems with the measure.

The bill fell four votes short of the 60 needed to bring it to debate, with 42 voting against it. Four GOP senators -- Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine and Dean Heller of Nevada -- voted in favor of the bill.

Here we have something that would have helped out the job market, made America more appealing to employers and reduce taxes, yet the Republicans blocked it. I asked why, but we know why. The answer came last year from the mouth of the Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, when he said that if the economy improves it hurts their chances at elections. In other word, screw you and your family and America overall; all the Republicans want is power.

12 Dead In Colorado Shooting Rampage

Posted 7/20/12 at 9:21am by jamie

Horrible news to wake up to this morning:

A heavily armed gunman tossed tear gas into the darkness of an Aurora, Colorado movie theater Friday and then sprayed the audience with gunfire during an early morning screening of the new Batman movie, killing 12 and wounding 38 others, authorities said.

One of the injured was just 3 months old, according to hospital workers.

Police arrested a man believed to be the shooter in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. The suspect was not immediately identified. Police said he was a man in his 20s from Aurora.

The gunman, 24 year old James Holmes, was carrying an AK-47, wearing a bullet proof vest and a gas mask. When he entered the theater he let off a tear gas canister. Police arrested him at his car, outside the theater and without incident. If one good thing comes out of this it's the fact we have the shooter in custody and police can get information out of him, like a motivation.

It does sound like the suspects mother wasn't shocked by the news:

A San Diego woman identifying herself as James Holmes's mother spoke briefly with ABC News this morning.

She had awoken unaware of the news of the shooting and had not been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

"You have the right person," she said.

"I need to call the police," she added. "I need to fly out to Colorado."

That statement is very eerie. The mother knew her son was capable of such a tragedy. The question is why she did nothing to warn people of her son?
