Clear Channel Laying Off Locally

Posted 3/30/12 at 9:31am by jamie

Clear Channel is doing some big layoffs here in the Cincinnati market:

Tony Bender, Program Director for 55KRC and ESPN 1530, is gone. He writes "23 years. It was a good run. Tomorrow will be a good day."

Also gone is traffic man Brian Pitts. Another casualty was 700 WLW Promotions Director Sherry Rowland. She tells Local 12 News she was "laid off due to budget cuts." She posted on her Facebook page "ended work at Clear Channel Communications, Inc yesterday as a promotion director for 700WLW, Cincinnati ESPN 1530 and Fox Sports 1360."

Also gone, Mark Bianchi Digital Sales Manager

.

But after some Googling it doesn't appear to be limited to Cincinnati:

Word is filtering in from a growing number of CLEAR CHANNEL MEDIA & ENTERTAINMENT radio markets of a lot of downsizing taking place.

ALL ACCESS contacted CLEAR CHANNEL, and VP/Marketing & Entertainment ANGEL ARISTONE confirmed the layoffs: "We are constantly evaluating our organization and structure to make sure we are as well positioned as possible to continue to lead in the evolving marketplace.

I just wonder how much of this could be from Rush Limbaugh and the advertisers pulling out from his show? Of course it could also be the fact that Bain Capital owns Clear Channel and we know that Mitt Romney likes firing people.

Jim Hoft's Inability To Read!

Posted 3/14/12 at 3:44pm by jamie

Jim Hoft, aka Gateway Pundit, is at it again. In reference to this article, Hoft posts this:

Hoft then goes on to quote the article:

A member of the Occupy New Haven movement was raped in a tent at the Occupy camp late on Monday night or early Tuesday morning, police said.

Police said a woman went to find the victim on Tuesday afternoon because she had not seen her.

She went to the woman’s tent and called for her, but there was no answer, so she looked inside the tent and found the woman, police said.

The victim wasn’t able to respond, police said, so the witness yelled out to other Occupiers to call police and emergency medical services.

At some point, the victim told the witness she had been raped in a tent at the camp, police said.

Police responded to the camp at 3:25 p.m. The victim was brought to Yale-New Haven Hospital and police charged England Gamble, 53, of New Haven, with first-degree sexual assault and first-degree unlawful restraint.

If you notice in Hoft's caption he refers to Gamble as a #occupier. Now either Hoft can't read more than a few paragraphs or he just loves lying to his readers because further down the article we find out:

Members of the Occupy movement said neither Gamble nor the victim are members of the movement. They said both are homeless and set up a tent nearby.

That's wingnut journalistic standards right there; totally ignore facts or just omit them altogether. Talk about sad....

National Advertising On Limbaugh's Show Suspended For 2 Weeks

Posted 3/13/12 at 11:58am by jamie

And the fallout continues:

Radio-Info.com reports that Premiere Networks, which syndicates the Rush Limbaugh show, told its affiliate radio stations that they are suspending national advertising for two weeks. Rush Limbaugh is normally provided to affiliates in exchange for running several minutes of national advertisements provided by Premiere each hour. These ads are called “barter spots.” These spots are how Premiere makes its money off of Rush Limbaugh and other shows it syndicates.

But without explanation, Premiere has supended these national advertisements for two weeks. Radio-Info.com calls the move “unusual.” The development suggests that Rush Limbaugh’s incessant sexist attacks on Sandra Fluke have caused severe damage to the show.

Earlier this week we found out that 141 advertisers have said they will no longer advertise on Limbaugh's show, as well as any other political shock-jock shows. Here's a list of some of those advertisers:

Sony, British Petroleum, McDonald’s, NBC, Toyota, Subway, Lowes, Autozone, Geico, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, State Farm, and IBM

But a big one that I'm sure really hits Rush hard - The U.S. Army. I'm sure we'll hear a lot of outrage from the right over that one and they will come up with every legal and constitutional excuse they can make up to attack the decision, but they will be totally manufactured.

While on this subject I want to take issue with something the right has been doing by comparing Rush Limbaugh to Bill Maher. For example, Ann Althouse yesterday posted:

Major Fallout From Limbaugh's Mouth!!

Posted 3/10/12 at 4:30pm by jamie

Rush Limbaugh looks to no longer be immune from his misogynistic name calling that has polluted our public airwaves for 20 years:

Premiere Networks, which distributes Limbaugh as well as a host of other right-wing talkers, sent an email out to its affiliates early Friday listing 98 large corporations that have requested their ads appear only on “programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity).”

This is big. According to the radio-industry website Radio-Info.com, which first posted excerpts of the Premiere memo, among the 98 companies that have decided to no longer sponsor these programs are “carmakers (Ford, GM, Toyota), insurance companies (Allstate, Geico, Prudential, State Farm), and restaurants (McDonald’s, Subway).” Together, these talk-radio advertising staples represent millions of dollars in revenue.

While they aren't singling out Limbaugh, he is in the hit list along with pretty much the rest of right-wing talk radio.

But what Limbaugh did was attack one of his most important demographics:

But this latest controversy comes at a particularly difficult time for right-wing talk radio. They are playing to a (sometimes literally) dying demographic. Rush & Co. rate best among old, white males. They have been steadily losing women and young listeners, who are alienated by the angry, negative, obsessive approach to political conservations. Add to that the fact that women ages 24–55 are the prize advertising demographic, and you have a perfect storm emerging after Limbaugh’s Sandra Fluke comments.

Considering the big money these talkers are paid and the need for advertisers, this could very well be right-wing talk radio heading towards its death bed. Not only that, but the social media age has helped hasten their trip:

Rush's "Apology"

Posted 3/5/12 at 11:44am by jamie

Over the weekend Rush Limbaugh issued his apology to Sandra Fluke for calling her a slut. Instead of doing an on air apology like other personalities have done in the past, Rush took the most cowardly of approached, releasing a statement through a spokesperson late on a Saturday afternoon.

This hasn't helped Rush's problems. Advertisers are still fleeing his show. One company is Carbonite:

One such company that had been a longtime sponsor of Mr. Limbaugh’s, Carbonite, said it would reconsider its ad spending; after the apology was issued, it announced that it would suspend its ads anyway. “We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse,” the company’s chief executive, David Friend, said.

And as a business owner I can fully understand where these advertisers are coming from. It's not that this was just an isolated incident from Rush. It happens all the time. He is the biggest misogynist on the airwaves and his half-assed attempt at an apology proves he won't change. Of course that doesn't stop his minions from circling the wagons. For example, the right is questioning why Carbonite didn't drop Ed Schultz after he called Laura Ingraham a "right wing slut".

The Republicans just don't get it.

Republican Leader Rush Limbaugh Is Feeling The Heat (UPDATED)

Posted 3/2/12 at 12:45pm by jamie

Rush Limbaugh may have really stepped in it this time. On his show yesterday he called Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown student and contraceptive advocate, a "slut". He also said that any woman who advocates for contraceptives should post their online sex videos:

Yesterday Sandra Flake responded to Rush on the Ed Schultz show:

I guess my reaction is the reaction a lot of women have when they’ve been called these names. Initially you’re stunned but then, very quickly, you’re outraged because this is, historically, the kind of language that is used to silence women, especially women who stand up and say that these are their reproductive health care needs and this is what they need. And what’s been amazing to me today is the outpouring of support. Everyone from members of Congress to Georgetown faculty to so many women who’ve contacted me, and I think it’s clear from what they’ve said that they’re not going to be silenced by this.

This fat, sexist pig that the Republican Party has anointed their messiah has really opened up can here. It's bad enough that the GOP is fighting back against their image of being a sexist party, but when you got their hero making these kind of derogatory remarks towards women, it just undoes everything they have been trying to repair. Now we have some Republicans responding:

Carly Fiorina, National Republican Senatorial Committee Vice-Chairman, on Friday condemned Rush Limbaugh for calling law student Sandra Fluke a “slut.”

The Right's Disrespect Of Andrew Breitbart

Posted 3/1/12 at 10:48am by jamie

Andrew Breitbart passed away last night at the age of 43. With the news the right has instantly started talking about the rabid comments from the left on Twitter. Of course most of the names they are pulling out are names we never even heard of. But does the right even know who Andrew Breitbart was?

Early this morning, news broke that Sen. Ted Kennedy had passed away after serving in the U.S. Senate for nearly 50 years. Soon after, conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart began a sustained assault on Kennedy’s memory, tweeting “Rest in Chappaquiddick.”

Over the course of the next three hours, Breitbart unapologetically attacked Kennedy, calling him a “villain,” “a big ass motherf@#$er,” a “duplicitous bastard” and a “prick.” “I’ll shut my mouth for Carter. That’s just politics. Kennedy was a special pile of human excrement,” wrote Breitbart in one tweet.

It seems like the left is giving Breitbart the kind of wake he would have wanted and the right doesn't have any idea who he really was. The world's most famous troll is dead now and if it would have been a big name progressive blogger, you can bet your ass Andrew would be firing out the insults on Twitter and the same people on the right whining today would be retweeting and laughing their asses off.

Someone Please Smack PolitiFact With A Dictionary

Posted 2/21/12 at 12:11pm by jamie

PoitiFact PolitiFarce is at it again:

In a promotional spot for his MSNBC program, Lawrence O’Donnell speaks proudly of his father attending college on the post-World War II benefits package that transformed the nation.

O’Donnell further says of the original GI Bill: "It’s the most successful educational program that we’ve ever had in this country -- and the critics called it welfare."

They did? Austin lawyer Terral Smith, a former Republican member of the Texas House, urged us to check this after seeing the ad in January.

So what did they rule?

We found no evidence of critics referring to the GI Bill as welfare. Yet some fretted that the law’s unemployment compensation element would encourage laziness. We see a touch of truth to O’Donnell’s claim, which we rate Mostly False.

Well OK, they didn't call it "welfare" verbatim, but they did say this:

Comments from Rep. Rankin about fearing a "tremendous inducement to certain elements to try to get employment compensation. It is going to be very easy… to induce these people to get on federal relief." Another Rankin comment, suggesting the proposal would reward those who delayed seeking work: "The bane of the British Empire has been the dole system." He also aired a racist comment, saying: "If every white serviceman in Mississippi… could read this so-called GI Bill, I don’t believe there would be one in 20 who would approve of it... We have 50,000 Negroes in the service from our state and in, in my opinion, if the bill should pass in its present form, a vast majority of them would remain unemployed for at least another year, and a great many white men would do the same."

ESPN's Total Fail

Posted 2/20/12 at 9:10am by jamie

If you don't follow sports at all (and I mean AT ALL!), then you don't know about Jeremy Lin. Lin, who is of Taiwanese decent, has been taking the NBA by storm. The 21 year old has come out of nowhere and is off to one of the best starts in NBA history, shattering tons of records. For someone who lost interest in the NBA, Lin has made the sport fun to watch again.

So how does ESPN, the biggest name in Sports media, honor such an amazing athlete? With a headline like this:

"Chink" in the armor? That's a great way to refer to one of the greatest newcomers in sporting history. ESPN has fired the writer of that article, but was that enough?

In the print media business (traditional and online) there are filters between the writers and readers. These filters are called 'editors'. A writer authors their piece, then they send it to the editor before that article appears to the public. Does ESPN not engage in this most important practice of journalism, or did the editor who approved this headline get a free pass?

I think ESPN has more to answer to on this and until then they have become a total fail in sports reporting and journalism as a whole. Great job ESPN! You are the voice of American sports media and you just came off as the biggest bunch of racist idiots around.

OMG - Obama Took His Wife To Dinner On Valentine's Day! IMPEACH!

Posted 2/15/12 at 10:32am by jamie

Really - this is the coming right wing outrage of the day:

President and Mrs. Obama spent Valentine’s Day with the One Percent Tuesday, shelling out up to $300 for dinner for two at the high-end Vermilion restaurant outside of Washington.

Michelle just recently completed a three-day tour of the nation promoting her “Let’s Move” health and fitness initiative, during which she was depicted in a widely circulated photograph passing around a bowl of salad at an inexpensive Olive Garden restaurant.

But the press was not even permitted to take a peek at the Obamas last night as they feasted at one of the Washington area’s trendiest upscale joints.

What’s more, the Obamas warmed the earth a bit as their multi-car, fossil-fuel-burning motorcade roared out of Washington for a 25 minute trip to the Alexandria, Va. restaurant.

These people really need to grow the fuck up.

Fox Shifting To The Left?

Posted 2/14/12 at 10:24am by jamie

Welcome to the crazy world of Politico:

The grumblers were picking up on a strategy that has been under way for some time — a “course correction,” as Fox chief Roger Ailes put it last fall — with the network distancing itself from the tea party cheerleading that characterized the first two years of President Barack Obama’s presidency. Lately, Fox has increasingly promoted its straight-news talent in the press and conducted some of the toughest interviews and debates of the Republican primary season. Just last week, it hired the openly gay liberal activist Sally Kohn as a contributor.

All along, Fox watchers warned that it risked alienating conservative true believers as it inched toward the center.

Well, consider them alienated.

“To tell you the truth, a lot of conservatives see Fox News as being somewhat skewed on certain issues,” said Patrick Brown, who runs Internet marketing for The Western Center for Journalism, a conservative nonprofit that features stories questioning the president’s eligibility for office. “We actually did a poll recently that said, ‘Is Fox News actually conservative, or has it moved left?’ And some 70 percent of our readers thought it had moved left.”

So because FOX reports more actual news their readers believe it's a move to the left? What's that say about America's right?

But the thing is that Fox hasn't moved to the left. Ed Kilgore explains:

But you need to understand the context: The second graph of Keach Hagey’s piece cites as the prime evidence for this “shift to the Left” the current prominence at Fox of Karl Rove and Sean Hannity. Seriously.

PolitiFact Or PolitiHack?

Posted 1/26/12 at 9:01am by jamie

PolitiFact is back at it again, showing that they don't even know the meaning of fact. Tuesday night they gave President Obama a half true for this statement in the SOTU:

in the last 22 months, businesses have created more than three million jobs. Last year, they created the most jobs since 2005

PolitiFact originally called that only half true but now have changed it to mostly true, with this editor's note:

EDITOR’S NOTE: Our original Half True rating was based on an interpretation that Obama was crediting his policies for the jobs increase. But we've concluded that he was not making that linkage as strongly as we initially believed and have decided to change the ruling to Mostly True. The original article is archived here.

Here's what they originally nailed Obama on:

As for whether 2011 was the best job-producing year since 2005, he’s right if you’re counting private-sector jobs, and slightly off if you’re counting all jobs.

But the President specifically said business, meaning private sector. He didn't at all mention government jobs. This is back to the definition of what "is" is.

So what is PolitiFact dinging him on now? Here we go back to the updated article:

Finally, there's another dimension. In his remarks, Obama described the damage to the economy, including losing millions of jobs "before our policies were in full effect." Then he describe the subsequent job increases. This suggests that he’s taking a degree of credit for the job growth, which runs counter to the reality that no mayor or governor or president deserves all the blame or all the credit for changes in employment.

Bare Naked Islams Short Reprieve And Exposure Of Right Wing Hypocrisy

Posted 1/2/12 at 11:32am by jamie

On Friday I posted about Islam hate site "Bare Naked Islam" being taken offline by their hosting company Wordpress. CAIR had put out a press release, complete with links, showing that the site has a history of promoting violence towards Islam. Well Wordpress has allowed the site to go back up, but told them they must be moved off the service by January 6.

Let me set the record straight here before going into a couple of the comments I have noticed. Wordpress.com is a FREE service (though they also offer commercial services) provided by a PRIVATE U.S. company. We constantly hear the right talk about how bad big government is always trying to get in the way of business, so this first comment really has me scratching their head:

I have seen a lot of wingnuts saying this shouldn't be legal and is violating freedom of speech. For it to be legal and the government to have the authority to prevent it, would mean more regulation and government intervention into law. That's why this second comment has me scratching my head even more:

Wingnut Outrage Of The Day

Posted 12/30/11 at 1:20pm by jamie

CAIR complained to wordpress.com about an Islam bashing website hosted on their service and Wordpress removed the site:

he Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced today that an anti-Muslim Internet hate site that contained a number of threats of violence targeting mosques, including the comment "I want [Muslim] blood on my hands," has been taken down by its hosting company.

CAIR said visitors to "Bare Naked Islam," hosted by WordPress.com, now see the message: "barenakedislam.wordpress.com is no longer available. This blog has been archived or suspended for a violation of our Terms of Service."
.
[NOTE: "Bare Naked Islam" was one of the major promoters of the campaign to pressure Lowe's to drops its ads from TLC's "All-American Muslim."]

Last month, CAIR called on the FBI to investigate the threats of violence targeting mosques posted on the blog and urged WordPress.com to remove it for violating the hosting company's terms of service (TOS), which prohibit blogs that "contain threats or incite violence towards individuals or entities." Articles and comments posted on "Bare Naked Islam" urged attacks on and desecration of American and European mosques.

And the outrage from right wing bloggers has spread like wildfire, as you can see on this Memeorandum thread.

We see this a lot from the right. A couple of years ago Michelle Malkin got her account suspended on YouTube and countless right wing blogs went into the "boycott Google products" rampage. What I found most interesting is that a lot of those blogs were Blogger blogs, which is a free blogging service offered by.....you guessed it GOOGLE!
