BREAKING: The Hammer Falls

Posted 11/24/10 at 6:27pm by jamie

tom_delay_mugshotA little something more to give thanks for tomorrow as Tom Delay was just found guilty of money laundering:

A Travis County jury today found former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay guilty of political money laundering charges relating to a corporate money swap in the 2002 elections.

The verdict came down five years after DeLay was forced to step down as the second most powerful Republican in the U.S. House. The charges also led DeLay to resign from his Sugar Land congressional seat in 2006.

DeLay was accused of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. On the conspiracy charge, DeLay faces a sentence of two to 20 years in prison and five to 99 years or life in prison on the money laundering count.

So we now find out that it wasn’t the “criminalization of politics”, but rather the “criminalization of breaking the law”.

Too Rich To Prosecute

get out of jail freeGet ready to be pissed to the point of wanting to break stuff:

A Morgan Stanley wealth manager will not face felony charges for a hit-and-run because Colorado prosecutors don't want him to lose his job.

Martin Joel Erzinger, who manages more than $1 billion in assets for Morgan Stanley in Denver, is being accused only of a misdemeanor for allegedly driving his Mercedes into a cyclist and then fleeing the scene, Colorado's Vail Dailyreports. The victim, Dr. Steven Milo, whom Erzinger allegedly hit in July, suffered spinal cord injuries, bleeding from his brain and, according to his lawyer Harold Haddon, "lifetime pain."

The reason for the reduced charges?

“Felony convictions have some pretty serious job implications for someone in Mr. Erzinger's profession, and that entered into it," Hurlbert said. "When you're talking about restitution, you don't want to take away his ability to pay."

"We have talked with Mr. Haddon and we had their objections, but ultimately it's our call," Hurlbert said.

So the guy is to well off to face what the law wants?

Technological Fails In A Criminal World

Posted 10/7/10 at 9:11am by jamie

familyguy_toloveanddieindixie_herbert_1162591879_711743 As technology rules more of our lives, stories like this will become much more common place:

An electronic monitoring system tracking sex offenders, parolees and others shut down, leaving authorities in 49 states blind to offenders' movements for about 12 hours, authorities said Wednesday.

A system operated by Boulder, Colo.-based BI Incorporated unexpectedly hit its data storage capacity Tuesday morning, which blocked notifications to prisons and other corrections agencies on about 16,000 people being tracked, BI spokesman Jock Waldo said.

Tracking devices continued to record movement, but corrections agencies couldn't immediately view the data. The company has substantially increased its data storage capacity and hasn't heard of any safety issues, Waldo said. People being monitored were unaware of any problems.

And the article leaves you wondering about the credibility of the company charged with monitoring criminals, who in large part want to prey on our children. They reached a “data storage capacity”? Don’t they monitor their own hardware? Even Windows warns you when your hard drives are getting full. There are also tons of tools to monitor if you are reaching your peak on bandwidth.

All that makes this statement even more frustrating:

Just wow:

The head of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has been arrested after soliciting an undercover officer in a restroom downtown.

Andrew J. Miller, 40, of Carmel, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at Claypool Court, connected to Circle Centre Mall near Washington and Illinois streets, on a preliminary charge of public indecency and indecent exposure, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

According to the probable cause affidavit, an Indianapolis police officer conducting an undercover vice investigation said Miller made eye contact with him before looking back at him and walking into the men's restroom.

The officer said he followed and found Miller inside an open stall with his pants down, masturbating.

The officer said Miller then engaged him in conversation, while continuing to touch himself, asking the officer if he wanted to go somewhere, if he wanted to touch his genitals and if he was married.

"Miller stated he was married too, and that it would be OK," according to the probable cause report.

The officer said he then arrested Miller.

What a wanker! HAHAHAH.

Prosecutor In Stevens Case Commits Suicide

Posted 9/28/10 at 11:25am by jamie

ted_stevens The whole investigation into the handling of the late Ted Stevens prosecution took a really interesting turn this weekend:

One of the prosecutors who handled the corruption trial of Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens committed suicide over the weekend, according to his lawyer.

Justice Department prosecutor Nicholas Marsh and five others have been the subject of an investigation by the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility over their handling of the Stevens case, which the Justice Department ultimately dropped amid charges the government did not properly share evidence with Stevens' defense attorneys. The judge in the Stevens case also ordered a special prosecutor to look into it.

Bob Luskin, an attorney for Marsh, told CNN Marsh killed himself but did not provide details. "It did seem he was overwhelmed by the emotional cost of this investigation," said Luskin. According to the attorney, Marsh was in his late 30s.

And for those that can’t remember before 2009, this case was handled by the Bush DOJ, a DOJ that had a lot of questionable practices and was accused of being “politicized”. The final report on this investigation should read like a John Grisham novel.

Closing Guantanamo Should Be A Conservative Issue

Posted 9/14/10 at 9:14am by jamie

Moving the few hundred remaining prisoners at Guantanamo should be something conservatives rally behind. The reason for this is in the numbers:

A Bureau of Prisons spokesman on Monday revised upwards the cost of housing a captive in federal detention, days after the bureau said it spends a tiny fraction of what the military spends at Guantanamo Bay.

The new figure -- $27,251 a year per federal prisoner compared to $650,000 per captive at the U.S. base in Cuba -- is still a tiny fraction.

So it costs 23 times more to keep someone at Gitmo as it does to keep them in a federal prison. Considering the $27,251 number is an average, I’m sure it does cost more for maximum security prisoners, where the Gitmo people would go, but I highly doubt that it will cost anywhere near the $650,000 figure.

BREAKING: Federal Judge Rules DADT Unconstitutional

Posted 9/9/10 at 9:43pm by jamie

This is some big news:

A federal judge ruled late today that the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is unconstitutional.

U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips of Riverside declared that the Clinton-era law violates the First and Fifth Amendments, agreeing with arguments made by the plaintiffs that the policy violates the rights to free speech, due process and open association.

Judge Phillips said she would issue an injunction ordering the government to stop enforcing the policy, but the ruling will likely be appealed.

Does Nevada Have Any Sane Candidates?

Posted 9/5/10 at 4:17pm by jamie

I thought Sharon Angle was crazy, but this really takes the cake:

One Nevada gubernatorial hopeful sees a speedy fix to Nevada's budget crisis. Nonpartisan candidate Eugene "Gino" DiSimone believes people would pay for the privilege to drive up to 90 mph on designated highways—and fill the state's depleted coffers.

DiSimone calls his idea the "free limit plan." He estimates the plan would bring in $1 billion a year.

First, vehicles would have to pass a safety inspection. Then vehicle information would be loaded into a database, and motorists would purchase a transponder.

After setting up an account, anyone in a hurry could dial in, and for $25 charged to a credit card, be free to speed for 24 hours.

Apparently “Gino” isn’t considering the the added costs of extra police, fireman and paramedics for the increased accidents this will cause.

Who Would Jesus Mickey (WWJM)?

From Cincinnati’s channel 5:

A woman accused of using a dietary supplement to drug the children in her care has been found guilty of child endangering.

During the trial Wednesday, parents who took their babies to the Covenant Church Day Care in Springfield Township last year took the stand to say they noticed something wasn't right.

"On the days that he was in day care, he was exhausted. We would pick him up and put him in the car and he would instantly fall asleep,” Dr. Devin Graham said.

"At the time he was trying to sit up, things like that and he would appear to get dizzy every once in awhile and kind of topple over,” Derek Tanner said.

But until December 2009, they had no idea that the lead infant teacher at the school, Donna Scott, had been putting melatonin into their babies' food in order to get them to sleep.

Scott is the second Covenant Church Day Care employee to be convicted of drugging children.

And the drug of choice?

The charges against Scott came to light after a co-worker turned her in.

"She saw Donna Scott take a melatonin pill and crush it up using a puzzle piece then wipe the powder with her hand into a baby bottle,” Casey said.

Good for the co-worker turning her in, but considering there are now 2 convictions, it makes the crime look a little more widespread. A civil lawsuit is also pending against the church.

Constitution Party Candidate Indicted On Sex Charges With A Minor

Posted 9/1/10 at 9:13am by jamie

A Tea Party favorite for the U.S. Senate in Ohio has just been indicted by a grand jury for unlawful conduct with a minor:

A New Lebanon man, running for a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio, has been indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on sex charges.

Eric Deaton was indicted on one count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. He is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old girl between March 2006 and March 2007.

Perry Township police said Deaton met the victim at a church where Deaton served as an elder.

Deaton, who is due in court September 14, faces up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.  This isn’t stopping Deaton though. He’s staying in the race and insisting that this is some big political setup:

“I think this is politically motivated,” said Deaton, blaming the indictment on his decision to run for political office.

“The powers that be don’t like that,” said Deaton, who said he intends to stay in the race.

Deaton has been pretty much an unknown in Ohio politics, well that is until now. He has only received a handful of endorsements, but one of those endorsements really sticks out:

Perhaps it’s just a day of major irony, but looking at the front page for Vote Family Values, I couldn’t help but notice one of their top news stories:

REPORT: Shots Fired At Mosque, Site Of Arson

Posted 8/29/10 at 8:02pm by jamie

Now there are reports of shots being fired at the Murfreesboro Islamic Center in Tennessee (via The Political Carnival):

Rutherford County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a complaint about shots being fired this afternoon near the construction site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro on Veals Road off Bradyville Pike.

The report came just hours after a fire of suspicious nature damaged construction equipment at the site.

A group of congregation members was at the site looking at the damage done to construction equipment by the fire overnight when they heard nine shots fired from two directions.

The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. The congregation members reported hearing six shots coming from one direction, and about three minutes later they heard three more shots from another direction, said Saleh Sbenaty, a congregation member and MTSU professor.

(snip)

One piece of construction equipment was damaged over the weekend when it was burned, and three other pieces of equipment were doused with some sort of accelerant, Sbenaty said.

The sheriff’s office, FBI and Bureau of ATF are investigating the fire.

This is just hours after arson destroyed construction equipment at the site, an incident that is now classified as a hate-crime.

Fire At Tennessee Mosque Site

Posted 8/29/10 at 2:12pm by jamie

Given all the hate-baiting that has taken place over the Park 51 site in New York, it was only a matter of time until we started seeing stories like this:

ATF and FBI agents are investigating a Saturday morning fire that damaged four pieces of equipment and could halt construction at the site of the planned Islamic center and mosque just outside Murfreesboro.

Eric Kehn, spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said his agency has not deemed the burning of an excavation hauler as arson. He did confirm that three other pieces of equipment were damaged, but he would not comment on the extent of the damage.

"Any type of activity like this we take very seriously and we look into," Kehn said. "When things like this happen, we really need the help of the public."

We really need some leadership at this time. I think the leadership is more than even President Obama can give alone. Instead he should get George Bush to appear with him in a joint statement calling for this hatred to stop. If not then stories like this will only become more common.
