A New Year's Resolution For The Left

With a new year and one that also happens to be an election year, I would like to see one thing happen – the left stop the childish fighting. I’m addressing two very distinctive groups here – the firebaggers and the oBots. If you read any of the blogs that fall into these groups or even follow some of the members on Twitter, hardly will a day go by where the two don’t spend countless hours trying to tear each other down.

First for the firebaggers. President Obama is not as bad as you make him out to be. Sure we didn’t get a public option and the individual mandate of the healthcare bill is total crap, but it is a start to some kind of change. Yes we are still fighting in Afghanistan, but that’s exactly what candidate Obama said he would do in 2008.

And the NDAA does give the President the authority to detain citizens indefinitely, but do you really think that President Obama is going to go out and do that? Do you believe in a political reality that President Obama could have vetoed the bill that authorizes our national defense and not taken a serious backlash from the public, who doesn’t follow politics as close?

Look at things through reality instead of a shade of anger fueled red because you didn’t get everything you want from the man. He has to work with the Congress he has and your anger is a lot of times misplaced.

Now for the oBots. You guys need to wake up and realize that President Obama is just a man and not some perfect deity. Yes the healthcare bill was a step in the right direction, but it is still a far cry off from the real reform this country needs. Once the bill was passed it also become a non-issue to President Obama and the left. There has been no pushes to improve it like we were promised and might even be gone after the Supreme Court gets a hold of it.

The NDAA does give the President the power to indefinitely detain citizens and no, I don’t believe President Obama will use that, but who will be in the White House next January? Are you willing to have that power sitting with a President Gingrich or Romney?

Disagreeing with somethings a man does doesn’t mean you want him to fail or are cheering against him. Ass kissers are the most detrimental ally there is, because they won’t push a man to better himself or to look at areas he might be failing in. I have a lot of respect for President Obama and always viewed him as a man who wants to be told “hey – you’re fucking this up!” followed by a rational explanation why. That’s a 180 degree change from what we had before – a man who wanted to be surrounded by nothing but yes men and even had the audacity to admit it. No one is perfect and President Obama knows this, so be a great supporter of him and call him out when he does something that isn’t right.

This is going to be a very important year for us. If President Obama wins then you can either look at it as “YES – 4 more years!” or “4 more years and we can get a better person in there”. Either way, it’s going to be better than a President Romney or Gingrich. It also puts us in a much better position than the right, who know has to wonder if they can stomach a candidate they really don’t want for the next eight years or if they should bite the bullet and sit this one out, hoping for someone better in 2016.

The enthusiasm game means the most in elections and we have a serious advantage here. If you are an oBot you get four more years of your man and if you’re a firebagger, well at least you get four more years of what you know. Instead of putting all your energy into fighting with each other, redirect it towards keeping the keys to the White House out of the hands of someone who will be much worst – a Republican. Remember that unifying anger towards George Bush and channel that to keeping the White House blue in 2012. After that go back to fighting in hopes of finding a candidate that will satisfy your own needs in 2016 and let the system reboot and start all over again.

If we all work together in 2012 we can make it a good year and put the GOP into further chaos. If that chaos does grow, the strength of the American left will also grow and that’s something we all want.

I hope everyone has a good 2012. Now let’s get to work and keep the GOP’s influence to a minimum!
