Big Spill Day

Posted 6/7/10 at 9:47am by jamie

In about 10 minutes the White House will hold a joint press briefing with Robert Gibbs and Thad Allen, in what is probably the start of a much more out front White House when it comes to the spill:

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs's briefing, which normally comes in the afternoon, takes place at 10 a.m., and will be conducted by Adm. Thad Allen, the national incident commander in charge of the response to the Gulf of Mexico disaster.

Following that we have this:

The briefing is happening early to make way for a Facebook video chat with energy czar Carol Browner, who has become one of the go-to oil spill people at the White House in the past week.

President Obama also plans to hold a full meeting of his Cabinet -- not a common event during his first year and a half in office -- to discuss what the administration is doing to stop the leak and to clean up the coastlines of several states.

Are we finally getting the Obama response that so many have been demanding? We'll see today.

It’s A Start

We are starting to see some movement on the DADT front:

Tomorrow, Congress will be holding its first hearing in 17 years on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the 1993 law that bars gay men and women from serving openly in the military. LGBT leaders expect that Defense Secretary Robert Gates will announce that while Congress and the administration work on a permanent repeal of the law, the Defense Department “will not take action to discharge service members whose sexual orientation is revealed by third parties or jilted partners, one of the most onerous aspects of the law.” Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen aren’t, however, “expected to offer a specific legislative proposal to repeal the law.”

Welcome To Camp 7

Posted 2/6/08 at 5:07pm by jamie

What is camp 7? The AP has uncovered that:

Somewhere amid the cactus-studded hills on this sprawling Navy base,
separate from the cells where hundreds of men suspected of links to
al-Qaida and the Taliban have been locked up for years, is a place even
more closely guarded — a jailhouse so protected that its very location
is top secret.

For the first time, the top commander of detention operations at
Guantanamo has confirmed the existence of the mysterious Camp 7. In an
interview with The Associated Press, Rear Adm. Mark Buzby also provided
a few details about the maximum-security lockup.

Guantanamo commanders said Camp 7 is for key alleged al-Qaida
members, who must be kept apart from other prisoners to prevent them
from retaliating against long-term detainees who have talked to
interrogators. They also want the location kept secret for fear of
terrorist attack.

Yes so we have Gitmo, and then we have the super-secret Gitmo. I bet the people in Camp 7 dream of days of only facing water boarding.

Joint Chiefs Chair: Close Gitmo

It seems like a lot of top people say this, but will it ever happen?

The chief of the U.S. military said Sunday he favors closing the prison here as soon as possible because he believes negative publicity worldwide about treatment of terrorist suspects has been "pretty damaging" to the image of the United States.

"I'd like to see it shut down," Adm. Mike Mullen said in an interview with three reporters who toured the detention center with him on his first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last October.

More From "The Sick Bastard Republicans" File

This is just horrible. Atrios has a piece up talking about how Republican Rep. Curt Weldon has decided to challenge his Democrat opponent, retired Adm. Joe Sestak, by questioning his choice in hospitals for their five year old daughter who is recovering from a brain tumor.

Read the piece here - it shows you how low these assholes are. And to think of how pissy "shot ya in the face" Cheney got when someone mentioned his daughter being gay.

From A Heck of A Job to a Lack of A Job

Posted 9/9/05 at 6:55pm by jamie

Last week Brownie was doing a "heck of a job" per Bush.

This week apparently that job isn't going so good and now he is being
replaced as the head of the disaster in the Gulf. From the

Associated Press
:

WASHINGTON - Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown
is being relieved of his duties in managing the Bush administration's
Hurricane Katrina relief and recovery efforts, The Associated Press has
learned.

Brown is being sent back to Washington from Baton Rouge, where he was the
primary official overseeing the federal government's response to the
disaster, according to two federal officials who declined to be identified
before the announcement.

Brown will be replaced by Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad w. Allen, who was
overseeing New Orleans relief and rescue efforts.

This now opens up another serious question. Was Bush ignoring the lives of
all those in the Gulf because he wanted to maintain a public and political image
of being right? If so then he needs to be removed from office.
