Prosecutors To Drop Charges Against Strauss-Kahn

Posted 8/22/11 at 10:32am by jamie

Dominique Strauss-Kahn
We knew this was coming:

Prosecutors will ask a judge to dismiss all charges in the sexual assault case against former IMF director Dominique Strauss-Kahn at a court hearing on Tuesday, the New York Post reported on Sunday, citing unnamed sources.

The Manhattan district attorney's office will file a motion recommending the case be dropped and laying out the chronology of events that led to that point, according to the Post.

Strauss-Kahn, who has denied the allegations, was once seen as a leading contender to be president of France until a maid, Nafissatou Diallo, accused him of sexual assault on May 14 at New York's Sofitel Hotel. He was arrested and forced to resign as head of the International Monetary Fund a few days later.

This is a man who has had his life destroyed over a bogus allegation and over-zealous prosecutors. He has already been given a life sentence and it wasn’t one imposed by the courts. Hopefully those responsible will be held accountable.

Rebekah Brooks Resigns

Posted 7/15/11 at 9:12am by jamie

We knew it was only a matter of time:

Rebekah Brooks, the loyal lieutenant of Rupert Murdoch, resigned Friday as chief executive of his embattled British newspapers, becoming the biggest casualty so far in the phone hacking scandal at a Sunday tabloid.

Murdoch had vigorously defended Brooks in the face of demands from politicians that she step down, and had previously refused to accept her resignation.

Brooks was editor of News of the World between 2000 and 2003, the time of the most explosive allegations to hit Murdoch's News Corp. media empire, and she has been in charge of News International's four British newspapers since 2007.

Of course this does not absolve her of any wrongdoing, but the fact that the Murdoch's accepted her resignation doesn't bode well for the media empire, especially with the announcement yesterday from the FBI that they have launched an investigation into the possible hacking of 9/11 victims here in the U.S.

Assange To Be Extradited

Posted 2/24/11 at 8:45am by jamie

Things are going to get really interesting now:

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is to be extradited to Sweden to face allegations of rape and sexual assault. Assange will appeal, his legal team confirmed. If this is unsuccessful, he will be extradited to Sweden in 10 days.

Delivering his ruling at a hearing at Belmarsh magistrates court in London, the chief magistrate Howard Riddle systematically dismissed each of the defence's arguments against Assange's extradition.

Assange's legal team had disputed that Swedish prosecutor, Marianne Ny, had the authority to issue a European arrest warrant, but the judge ruled that she did possess this authority and the warrant issued was valid.

I wonder if Assange will be releasing the secret key to his “insurance” file soon? He has threatened to do just that and this file has all the world’s leaders on edge.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio Under Investigation By A Federal Grand Jury

Posted 1/8/10 at 9:01am by jamie

The self proclaimed “America’s toughest sheriff” is in some trouble:

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now the target of a federal grand jury probe, according to the Maricopa county manager.

Manager David Smith tells 12 News he has been called as a witness in the investigation, as well as Deputy County Manager Sandi Wilson.

Sources say the investigation is tied to allegations of abuse of power relating to targeting political opponents and enemies for harassment and investigation. Smith says that includes threatening investigations against opponents when there is no probable cause and intimidating county employees at their homes.

Georgia’s House Speaker Resigns

Posted 12/3/09 at 5:36pm by jamie

This has been a very interesting and sad story that really hasn’t received much attention:

Georgia's powerful House speaker resigned Thursday after a suicide attempt and allegations by his ex-wife that he carried on an affair with a lobbyist.

Glenn Richardson, the state's first GOP speaker since Reconstruction, had won sympathy from even his political enemies when he revealed last month that he attempted suicide by swallowing sleeping pills. But then his ex-wife went on TV and accused him of having "a full-out affair" with a lobbyist while they were still married.

Hopefully he will be able to get his life together now.

A South Carolina House panel is holding a hearing today on the pending impeachment of Mark Sanford. So far not much has come out of it, but I did just get this in my inbox:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Embattled SC Gov. Mark Sanford faces 37 ethics charges he broke travel, campaign funding laws.

I’ll update this post as more information becomes available.

UPDATE:

NPR has more:

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford faces ethics charges he broke state laws more than three dozen times by violating rules on airplane travel and campaign money, according to details of the allegations released Monday.

It's up to the state attorney general to decide whether to file criminal charges. Sanford's lawyers have claimed the allegations involve minor and technical aspects of the law.

So we could be looking at an actual criminal trial against the once future face of the GOP.

Down Right Freaky

Posted 11/17/09 at 2:45pm by jamie

TPM has been digging deep into the apparent implosion at The Washington Times and this latest revelation is just creepy:

It's starting to seem like everything we've reported so far about the implosion at Washington's conservative paper, The Washington Times, was only the pre-implosion. The OpEd page editor is now filing complaint with EEOC alleging religious discrimination -- one of the allegations contained in which was being forced to attend a Moon mass wedding. And it seems like this may only be the beginning of the fireworks. More soon.

On one hand it’s heart warming seeing a publication of hate and partisanship falling apart, but on the other hand it’s really disturbing that an American company feels they can do this sort of thing. The Constitution means absolutely nothing to the right – nothing at all.

Richardson Off The Hook

Posted 8/27/09 at 7:24am by jamie

It looks like Bill Richardson will be cleared of any wrong doing in the pay to play scandal:

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and former high-ranking members of his administration won't be criminally charged in a yearlong federal investigation into pay-to-play allegations involving one of the Democratic governor's large political donors, someone familiar with the case said.
The decision not to pursue indictments was made by top Justice Department officials, according to a person familiar with the investigation, who asked not to be identified because federal officials had not disclosed results of the probe.

That’s good news. I think Richardson could be a valuable asset to the administration, but this prevented that. Now that he is cleared maybe we can start using him more.

Quotes That Haunt

Posted 6/24/09 at 10:48pm by jamie

"I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign)... I come from the business side," he said. "If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone."

Mark Sanford talking about Bill Clinton’s affair in 1998. 11 years later and he is now on the receiving end with no talk of resigning. Just another GOP hypocrite exposed.

Norm Coleman Under FBI Investigation

Posted 5/14/09 at 7:35am by jamie

It looks like Norm is going to have more of a battle than just trying to steal an election:

The FBI is investigating allegations that former Senator Norm Coleman had clothing and other items purchased on his behalf by a longtime friend and businessman Nasser Kazeminy, according to a source in Minnesota who was interviewed recently by federal agents.

E.K. Watkins, a spokesman for the Minnesota FBI, would neither confirm nor deny the report. The source provided details of the interview to the Huffington Post, in addition to copies of business cards left by the agents.

The FBI has also been conducting interviews in Texas, according to media reports, in regards to different allegations that Kazeminy tried to steer $75,000 to Coleman through his wife's employer. Up to this point, there have not been reports of any FBI work taking place in Coleman's home state.

So the Republicans are keeping the people of Minnesota from their constitutionally entitled two Senator representation, by trying to keep Coleman in the fight – a person now under federal investigation. Now that is classy.

BREAKING: Rove And Miers Will Give Depositions

Posted 3/4/09 at 6:53pm by jamie

Didn’t expect this:

Former White House political adviser Karl Rove and counsel Harriet Miers have agreed to face questions from Congress about allegations of improper political influence in the Justice Department, the House Judiciary Committee announced Wednesday.

Both will give depositions to investigators from the committee, and claims of privilege will be "significantly limited," according to a statement from the committee.

Rove and Miers had been resisting congressional subpoenas about the matter since the House Judiciary Committee began trying to force Miers to testify in 2006. The Bush White House resisted, claiming she could not be compelled to appear. But a federal judge in Washington ruled that the former Bush administration officials had no grounds to invoke executive privilege in the case.

The committee, led by Rep. John Conyers, D-Michigan, has been investigating claims that Rove and his White House allies fired U.S. attorneys for political reasons and prosecuted officials whom they saw as opponents. Conyers called the agreement "a victory for the separation of powers and congressional oversight."

I can only guess they got some legal advice that made them decide it’s time to follow the law.

Steele Does Symbolize The RNC

Posted 2/7/09 at 5:12pm by jamie

Especially when it comes to corruption:

Michael S. Steele, the newly elected chairman of the Republican National Committee, arranged for his 2006 Senate campaign to pay a defunct company run by his sister for services that were never performed, his finance chairman from that campaign has told federal prosecutors.

Of course Steele is denying it:

Steele spokesman Curt Anderson said he did not know what information the federal agents were seeking, but he dismissed Fabian's allegations as patently false. "It's from, what, a convicted felon? And it has no substantiation in fact," he said.

But it looks like the information was obtained through an error by the WaPo, giving more to it’s validity:

The U.S. attorney's office inadvertently sent the confidential document, a defense sentencing memorandum filed under seal, to The Washington Post after the newspaper requested the prosecution's sentencing memorandum.

U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein declined to comment. Fabian could not be reached, and his attorney, James Wyda, declined to comment.

According to the filing, Wyda gave prosecutors "documents supporting [the] allegations." Wyda wrote in the memorandum that the government declined to credit Fabian for cooperating "presumably because its investigation is ongoing."

So it looks like the government has evidence against Steele in this. Suddenly people not paying all their taxes seems so minor.

Under Investigation

Posted 12/10/08 at 11:16am by jamie

coleman Not good news for Norm Coleman when the fate of his Senate re-election still hasn’t been decided:

Federal investigators are looking into allegations that a longtime friend and benefactor tried to steer money to U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman, the Pioneer Press has learned.

Agents with the FBI have talked to or made efforts to talk to people in Texas familiar with the allegations, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Houston is where the first of two lawsuits was filed alleging Nasser Kazeminy, a Bloomington financier, tried to steer $100,000 to Coleman via his wife's Minneapolis employer. The second suit, filed in Delaware, alleges Kazeminy initially tried to get money directly to the senator.

Can you hear the cheers of happiness from the Franken campaign?

Denied!

kutcherside The right wing conspiracy nut jobs have been having a field day bogging down our courts with claims that Obama isn’t eligible to be President, claiming he is not an actual citizen. Well the latest claim has been shot down by the SCOTUS:

The Supreme Court has turned down an emergency appeal from a New Jersey man who says President-elect Barack Obama is ineligible to be president because he was a British subject at birth.

The court did not comment on its order Monday rejecting the call by Leo Donofrio of East Brunswick, N.J., to intervene in the presidential election.

I wondered out loud the other day why the party that is all for tort reform is burdening our courts with such outlandish allegations. Will someone in the media ask some right wingers, who support these lawsuits, why they feel it important to burden the courts now?

ACORN Goes After The GOP For Voter Suppression

Posted 10/29/08 at 5:30pm by jamie

It's great to see ACORN firing back at the GOP over their bogus allegations.

ACORN isn't laying down either, filing two lawsuits today. This entire faux-outrage by the rabid right has really shown their hatred. Who in their right mind would think that a national group like ACORN would collude to go out and illegally register people? It's about as absurd as saying the RNC is holding meetings on how to keep blacks from voting.
