Warren Buffett - A Man Who Cares About This Country

Posted 8/15/11 at 8:56am by jamie

Warren Buffett has a great op-ed in today's Times, in which he says it is time for Washington to extend the "shared sacrifice" we hear so much about to the rich, including himself:

OUR leaders have asked for “shared sacrifice.” But when they did the asking, they spared me. I checked with my mega-rich friends to learn what pain they were expecting. They, too, were left untouched.

While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks. Some of us are investment managers who earn billions from our daily labors but are allowed to classify our income as “carried interest,” thereby getting a bargain 15 percent tax rate. Others own stock index futures for 10 minutes and have 60 percent of their gain taxed at 15 percent, as if they’d been long-term investors.

These and other blessings are showered upon us by legislators in Washington who feel compelled to protect us, much as if we were spotted owls or some other endangered species. It’s nice to have friends in high places.

Buffett doesn't hide anything either. He breaks out the raw numbers. Last year Buffett paid 17.4% in federal taxes, while the employees in his office paid an average 36%.

Stop and think about that for a moment. The tax burden for the richest people in this country is more than 1/2 of what the bottom 99% of this country carries. Not only that, but we have a big name in the top 1% here saying that it isn't fair to the rest of us and must be changed.

The No Plan Tan Man

Posted 5/10/11 at 9:53am by jamie

Yesterday John Boehner said there would be no debt ceiling increase without cutting trillions in spending:

“Without significant spending cuts and changes to the way we spend the American people’s money, there will be no debt limit increase,” Mr. Boehner told members of New York’s business and finance community. “And cuts should be greater than the accompanying increase in debt authority the president is given.” Mr. Boehner said those cuts should be in the trillions of dollars, not billions.

So what should be cut? Well short of trying another push on the Ryan Medicare plan, something that Republicans are even souring on, Boehner gave no details.

Boehner did say everything “except tax hikes” is on the table. Would that include defense? Somehow I doubt it.

This really opens up a chance for President Obama to take lead on the issue. The President should do a speech and ask the Speaker exactly what he wants cut. Start pushing this, force John Boehner to lay out an actual plan instead of a talking point.

Of course talking points is all that John Boehner has. Remember back during the healthcare battle, when Boehner and company had this “much better plan”. They held a big press conference and released the “plan”, which turned out to be nothing but a glossy 8 1/2x11 talking point. When Boehner was pushed on the lack of details his response was “well we aren’t in charge, so we won’t do that”. Well Mr. Boehner, you are in charge now – where’s the details?

The GOP Is The Party Of The Minority

Posted 4/15/11 at 8:14am by jamie

The Economic Policy Institute has released a chart showing the average overall tax rates in 1979, 1992 and 2007. The picture isn’t pretty.

While the tax rate for you, me and the other 99% of this country has remained pretty much the same over the years, the tax rate for the top 1% has seen a nice decrease in their tax burden and the top 400 households have seen a reduction that leaves them paying less a share than the rest of the country.

How is this fair?

To answer that question, we must throw out everything we know about math and enter the world of GOP economics. You constantly hear the GOP say that these poor rich people have to pay the most in taxes. Of course they do because they also earn the biggest chunk of the money in this country. But for things to be fair, we mustn’t look at total amounts, but rather shares. You and me haven’t thrived off the American dream, but we are paying a bigger share than those who have. The people who need the money the most and would be more out to spend any extra money, which would boost our economy, see a bigger percentage of their earnings go to taxes than the ultra-rich.

We Really Need A Robin Hood

Posted 3/17/11 at 9:18am by jamie

Last week the Republican’s in the House voted to save the billions a year in tax subsidies to the oil industry, yet providing assistance to the low-income for their heating bills is on the chopping block.

This week the House AG committee decided to keep the farm subsidies, which total close to $20 billion a year, yet they want to cut food stamps.

Hearing this news, I keep thinking back to the 2008 election, when we heard “redistribution of wealth” fired at then candidate Obama. This was sparked from candidate Obama wanting things like the Bush tax cuts for the top 2% expire. Of course the Republicans didn’t like it – the redistribution was going the wrong way.

What we are reminded of now is how much the GOP really likes welfare - corporate welfare. The CEO of Shell Oil recently said that they don’t need the tax subsidies anymore, yet the Republicans didn’t care. They still voted to give them their handout, all at the expense of you and me.

The House Republicans are acting more and more like the notorious Sherriff of Nottingham. What we really need is a Robin Hood to come in and stop this stealing from the poor to pay the rich. I just wish more Americans would realize what is really happening and stop listening to the spin and lies coming from the right.

And I leave you with this. If putting more money in the pockets of big business is the answer to job growth, then why did our unemployment levels stay so high while corporate America broke all kinds of records? Economics 101 dictates that when people have more money, they spend more money. When they spend more money, demand goes up, which means supplies must go up. To make those supplies, companies need workers. The basic notion of GOP economics has been the exact opposite of what it really is.

Government Waste?

Posted 2/28/11 at 10:58am by jamie

Perhaps a good place to start looking at government waste is in the military contracts, specifically those tied to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan:

A new report from a bipartisan commission set up to scrutinize the unprecedented use of contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan concludes that the United States has wasted tens of billions of the nearly $177 billion that has been spent on those contracts and grants since 2002.

The report, titled "At What Risk? Correcting Over-reliance on Contractors in Contingency Operations," said its estimate may even understate the problem because it may not take into full account ill-conceived projects, poor planning and oversight by the U.S. government, as well as criminal behavior and blatant corruption by both government and contractor employees.

"For many years," the report says, "the government has abdicated its contracting responsibilities - too often using contractors as the default mechanism ... without consideration for the resources needed to manage them."

And I’m sure the number is higher. I wonder if they even considered the $9 billion that went missing in Iraq in 2003-2004? You know, that money, which whenever Democrats brought up the Republicans didn’t want to hear about it.

How can we even begin to talk about “financial responsibility” when this gross lack of oversight/accounting can continue to go on in our government without any talks of reform?

To Remember 9/11, Church Plans To Burn The Quran

Posted 8/1/10 at 8:00am by jamie

The islamophobic fundamentalists in America are at it again:

In protest of what it calls a religion "of the devil," a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," Pastor Terry Jones told CNN's Rick Sanchez earlier this week.

I love hearing Christian leaders talk about how violent Islam is, totally ignoring the extremely violent past of Christianity. And this moron, Terry Jones, he really thinks burning a book considered holy by over a million people is going to change anything? Perhaps he should be asked why he is wanting to help al Qaeda and their crusade of showing that westerners hate Islam so much.

BREAKING: Judge Dismisses Viacom’s Lawsuit Against Google

Posted 6/23/10 at 4:59pm by jamie

It’s been three years since Viacom went after YouTube for the Viacom videos being on the site. Today a judge threw out the lawsuit:

Today, the court granted our motion for summary judgment in Viacom’s lawsuit with YouTube. This means that the court has decided that YouTube is protected by the safe harbor of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) against claims of copyright infringement. The decision follows established judicial consensus that online services like YouTube are protected when they work cooperatively with copyright holders to help them manage their rights online.

This is an important victory not just for us, but also for the billions of people around the world who use the web to communicate and share experiences with each other. We’re excited about this decision and look forward to renewing our focus on supporting the incredible variety of ideas and expression that billions of people post and watch on YouTube every day around the world.

In a nutshell the Judge said that there is a legal route for copyright owners to file their complaints with websites they feel are infringing upon their property and that they must follow that route. It doesn’t mean you can go and upload a Daily Show clip to YouTube. It means that if you do, then Viacom must send a takedown notice to YouTube and YouTube must investigate and comply.

For those interested in the full decision, here it is:

Will BP Survive?

Posted 6/2/10 at 9:14am by jamie

Yesterday BP saw a huge decline in it's value as their stocks lost 15% of their value:

As BP hacked away at a pipe gushing oil at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, investors sawed off 15 percent, or $21.1 billion, of the company's market value Tuesday.

Some are pointing to the announcement by Eric Holder of the criminal investigation into BP, but the big sell off started before that in the U.K. markets, leaving it to point to BP's failure to contain the spill.

This sudden decline in value for the oil giant begs the question of rather BP will survive or not. In this clip from Rachael Maddow last night, Rachael explains how the EPA could actually nail BP for billions in court.

I believe this would be the best outcome to the situation. Sure it will play hell with oil prices for awhile, but it will also send a loud message to the oil industry that they can lose everything if they play by their own rules. It would also provide a very interesting case to watch.

Better Living Through Chemistry?

Posted 5/8/10 at 11:30am by jamie

Stories like his always make me think of how much we are screwing with Mother Nature and how much she fights back:

But farmers sprayed so much Roundup that weeds quickly evolved to survive it. “What we’re talking about here is Darwinian evolution in fast-forward,” Mike Owen, a weed scientist at Iowa State University, said.

Now, Roundup-resistant weeds like horseweed and giant ragweed are forcing farmers to go back to more expensive techniques that they had long ago abandoned.

I read stories like this and wonder if Monsanto, the company that created Round Up, didn’t have this in mind? They could make billions off their product and by the time the patents open up and competition starts forming, then the weeds will no longer be susceptible to the killer and Monsanto can create a new, more expensive weed killer.

In the end I don’t think Monsanto will win this war however. In my mind Mother Nature will go nuclear and kick Monsanto’s ass, perhaps with some Little Shop of Horrors style plants.

Summing Up The “Puny” Jobs Bill

Posted 2/24/10 at 10:12am by jamie

John Cole reminds us of a harsh reality when it comes to the little $15 billion jobs bill:

What is fifteen billion? A couple weeks of unemployment benefits? Not to go all Everett Dirksen and everything, but we ***LOST*** almost that much in Iraq, and no one flinched. But $15 billion is going to remedy job losses of tens of thousands every month on top of millions of lost job over the past two years? Isn’t that less than California’s budget deficit? And the only way it was going to get substantially bigger was to lard it up with pointless tax cuts?

Democrats should be ashamed of putting forth such a small bill to handle such a huge problem, but even worse is the Republicans who voted against it. Many of these were the same ones defending the lost billions in Iraq by going “oh well”. They absolutely have no concern for the American people.

Wall Street Ready To Fight The Bank Tax

Posted 1/18/10 at 8:30am by jamie

Now that the American people have bailed out the banking system and our leaders are looking at ways to recoup the hundreds of billions of tax dollars we have spent, Wall Street is starting to look at ways to get out of paying us back.

According to an article in today’s New York Times, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, which is the main lobbying arm of Wall Street, sent a e-mail to the heads of Wall Street’s legal departments last week saying that the tax may be unconstitutional since it would single out big banks. They have also hired Carter G. Phillips of Sidley Austin, an attorney who is no stranger to the Supreme Court, to review the proposal and determine if it could be considered unconstitutional.

When introducing this proposal last week, President Obama sent a warning shot to Wall Street, saying: “Instead of sending a phalanx of lobbyists to fight this proposal or employing an army of lawyers and accountants to help evade the fee, I suggest you might want to consider simply meeting your responsibilities.” Now it seems like Wall Street isn’t intent on doing that and instead wants to fight their responsibilities.

This becomes another gloomy chapter in corporate America’s milking of the people. They stood with their hands out when is was time to pass out money from the stimulus, but now that the government wants to take action to recoup costs and maybe prevent further failures, Wall Street is turning their noses at us. You can just hear Gordon Gecko muttering those famous words: “greed is good.”

It’s Like Iraq All Over

Posted 12/2/09 at 12:27pm by jamie

Once President Obama announced a timeline to start drawing down troops in Afghanistan we knew that the right would start attacking it. Right on cue we have John McCain telling Good Morning America that the timeline will “embolden” the enemy:

"I trust his [McChrystal's] judgment enormously but I also understand that both our enemies and our friends will hear the message that we are going to be leaving at a certain date. That was unnecessary," McCain said. "I'm confident we can succeed but when you tell your enemies there's a date and you're going to start leaving, it emboldens your enemies and dispirits your friends."

We have heard this same argument time and time again when it comes to trying to end a war. John McCain would rather see us stay in Afghanistan for the next 100 years than try to come home. It’s funny how these so called fiscal-hawks never have any problem throwing away billions upon billions of tax dollars in the name of  war.

It’s also really interesting the way McCain is trying to dance around supporting General McChrystal. Whenever the left criticized one of our commanders, people like McCain would come out swinging. McChrystal has very publically supported President Obama’s plan, so why can’t McCain? Is John McCain trying to undermine the leadership of the military now? It sure sounds that way. We even have General Petraeus saying that this timeline is very ‘realistic’:

Surprise! Big Pharma Getting Ready To Jack Up The Prices

Posted 11/16/09 at 10:17am by jamie

Anyone shocked by this?

Even as drug makers promise to support Washington’s health care overhaul by shaving $8 billion a year off the nation’s drug costs after the legislation takes effect, the industry has been raising its prices at the fastest rate in years.

In the last year, the industry has raised the wholesale prices of brand-name prescription drugs by about 9 percent, according to industry analysts. That will add more than $10 billion to the nation’s drug bill, which is on track to exceed $300 billion this year. By at least one analysis, it is the highest annual rate of inflation for drug prices since 1992.

So the drug companies promised Obama to cut costs by $8 billion, but first will raise those costs by $10 billion. I’m not a math whiz or anything, but that sure seems like a nice $2 billion boost for big Pharma.

I was thinking about drug prices yesterday while football was on. During one game there was the halftime report, and it was sponsored by Lipitor. I wonder how much that costs Pfizer? How about all those commercials for drugs and medical devices, like a common one for cardiac stents?

Drug companies spend billions a year in advertising for products that shouldn’t have to be sold to the public. To make this statistic even worse, they spend more in advertising than they do research. Why should Joe citizen need to be sold on Lipitor? One would think that would be the job of his doctor. If Joe has high cholesterol, then Joe’s doctor says “hey take this pill”.  The money pharma spends on advertising is a total waste that does nothing but drive up the costs of our medications.

Interesting Timing

Posted 9/17/09 at 4:13pm by jamie

The news that a judge has allowed the case of Jamie Leigh Jones against Halliburton/KBR to move forward has come at a very interesting time.

Jones has accused co-workers at Halliburton/KBR of kidnapping and rape. Normally you would think this kind of case would immediately become a prosecutorial matter, yet Halliburton was able to stop Jones from doing anything saying she had to go through “arbitration”.

So what makes the timing so interesting? Well Halliburton/KBR receives billions in taxpayer dollars, a far cry more than ACORN ever has. Not once did we hear any Republicans demand that taxpayer money be cut off from the company. Not once!

This is a case of a company that has apparently tried to cover up a brutal gang raping of one of their female employees. That is a lot worse than anything ACORN is being accused of, yet the Republicans find this totally disgusting action acceptable.

And again – the right is trying to make President Obama out like he is the founder and CEO of ACORN. No he isn’t, but remember who the CEO of Halliburton was? Dick Cheney, right before he became vice-president. And as vice-president he made millions off of his stock options from Halliburton – stock that went up because of the Iraq War.

Putin It All In Perspective

Posted 9/17/09 at 10:30am by jamie

The right is up in arms (no pun intended) over President Obama’s plan to scrap the Bush missile defense system. He hasn’t totally given up on it, instead working towards making a more mobile and cost effective system. The right just doesn’t like that.

The main idea of this missile defense system has been for protection of Europe from Iranian missiles, with a little added protection for the U.S. maybe.

So why is it the right is all for spending billions to defend Europe, yet they don’t want to spend a dime to defend U.S. citizens from a much more threatening killer – disease and illness? When you think about it along these terms, you quickly realize seriously misplaced priorities of the right.
