The Biggie That Could Give Us A President Bachmann

Posted 8/20/11 at 9:19am by jamie

As anyone who reads this blog somewhat regularly knows, I feel there is a big risk of a President Bachmann in 2013. I have given plenty of reasons previously, but the biggest one that scares me is the enthusiasm gap on the left. A new Public Policy Polling poll verifies that fear:

There's been plenty of bad news for Barack Obama this month in the form of his approval numbers, but our polling finds that his problems go deeper than that. Democratic enthusiasm about voting in next year's election has hit a record low this month.

Only 48% of Democrats on our most recent national survey said they were 'very excited' about voting in 2012. On the survey before that the figure was 49%. Those last two polls are the only times all year the 'very excited' number has dipped below 50%.

In 13 polls before August the average level of Democrats 'very excited' about voting next year had averaged 57%. It had been as high as 65% and only twice had the number even dipped below 55%.

Face it - the left is getting fed up. The President has constantly caved to the demands of the right, yet the right and the media makes it sound like everything sound like a victory for the left. Team Obama is also doing nothing to soothe over the disconnect between him and the base. That can easily lead to disaster next month.

With Bachmann in the top three in the Republican field and barring any last minute entries by some golden child, the fear of President Bachmann continues to grow. Just consider the two leading Bachmann - Romney and Perry. Both have parts of the base that absolutely doesn't like them. Bachmann is somewhat back burner now, so most people don't have much of an opinion of her, except that she has an R by her name.

Let's Get Weiner Straight

Posted 6/6/11 at 6:31pm by jamie

As you have most likely heard by now Anthony Weiner has admitted to sending the lewd photos of himself over the internet, including the now infamous bulge shot.

I can't begin to explain how frustrating this is. It's not for the main subject of this story, his bulge and internet habits, but rather for his handling of the whole situation. Weiner went out and made false claims of being hacked and a lot of his supporters, including myself, accepted that story. He lied to us all and that is inexcusable.

If Weiner would have come out last week and said "hey I made a stupid mistake and there might be more of these out there. I apologize for this", but he didn't. He became defiant and took to lying, knowing tons more evidence was floating around the inter-tubes.

Stupid? Stupidity doesn't even begin to describe this!

Then we have the whole Andrew Breitbart angle. Breitbart has no journalistic standards what-so-ever and sure didn't exhibit any in the handling of this story, but he did get it right. I know a lot on the left will still take to blaming Breitbart, but let's be honest with ourselves; if some blogger on the left got a picture of Boehner's flannel-clad boner that he sent to some girl, it would be picked up by every other blog on the left. That's the name of the game we all play.

There is one place that I still lay blame on this story and that is with the media. Yeah they should have reported it, but they have also kept on this story non-stop. Part of the blame does go to Weiner and his crap story at the beginning, but this story still garnered much more attention from the media than did the Mark Foley story, which is very similar except the fact that Weiner wasn't engaging in this activity with underage children.

But how does Weiner get off?

Saxby Chambliss Calls Blogger “Joe My God” To Apologize Over Staffers Comment

Posted 10/1/10 at 8:26am by jamie

Last week a staffer for Senator Saxby Chambliss posted a comment on the blog Joe My God stating “all faggots must die”. We were unsure at the time if the investigation that we were told would take place would actually happen. Well it did and it has resulted in the removal of a staffer to Senator Chambliss and Chambliss himself calling Joe to apologize. I will give the Senator credit for handling this in a very appropriate way. So many times stories like this get buried and we never learn what really happened.

Please ignore this post. It's just so I can get the new auto-Digg feature verified and I have to include this little code in so they can prove I own this blog.

Markos Banned From MSNBC

Posted 7/8/10 at 10:27am by jamie

I meant to hit this story yesterday. It also exemplifies the problems I’ve posted about in the past when it comes to MSNBC.

Markos and Joe Scarborough got into a little Twitter back and forth a couple of months ago:

JoeNBC: The Sestak story is as unbelievable a cover story as Nixon throwing little Checkers under the bus. A farce on it's face. Luckily for the White House, the media has been negligent on this story since Day 1. The press will let this laughable story slide.

markos: Like story of a certain dead intern. RT @JoeNBC: Luckily for the White House, the media has been negligent on this story since Day 1.

Markos: But if you want to talk about bullshit "scandals", @JoeNBC, there's this one about Joe Sestak and the White House you might've heard of.

JoeNBC: @markos Unbelievable. You have a long history of spreading lies suggesting I am a murderer. This is the 3rd or 4th time by my count.

Markos: @JoeNBC, I've never suggested you're a murderer. I've noted media hypocrisy in going after Gary Condit. But he was Dem. You aren't.

JoeNBC: Anyone in media who interviews @markos, know that you're extending your credibility to someone who regularly suggests that I'm a murderer.

Markos: A bit touchy, @JoeNBC? Links for where I accuse you of being a murderer please.

Joe Scarborough, a person of such thin skin that he will block anyone that disagrees with him on Twitter, didn’t like that. Like a child being picked on in school, Joe ran and told the teacher principal, or in this case, the president of MSNBC. That resulted in this email being sent to Markos:

Markos,

Pa. Republican Attorney General Subpoenas Twitter

Posted 5/19/10 at 6:33pm by jamie

Via Techcrunch comes a very interesting story out of Pennsylvania. Republican Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate, Tom Corbett, has subpoenaed Twitter in attempts to identify some anonymous critics:

The account @CasaBlancaPA, whose owner is identified as ‘Signor Ferrari’ (a criminal in the film Casablanca, played by Sydney Greenstreet) on Twitter, links to this blog in the bio section. The blog, hosted on Google’s Blogger service, is dedicated to “exposing the hypocrisy of Tom Corbett” according to its subtitle.

This will be one of those cases to keep an eye on.

Right Wing Blogger Wants To ‘Euthanize’ Reid’s Wife

Posted 3/12/10 at 8:29pm by jamie

One of the bigger wingnut bloggers, Dan Riehl, is out using the horrible accident that Harry Reid’s family was in to push the lie of “death panels”:

Come on, Harry - do your civic duty. The nation's broke and counting on you guy. Pull the plug and get back to work. And don't bill us for a full day today, either. This is no time to be sloughing off. Air freight her home, you can bury her during recess on your own time and dime. Or are you going to bill us for that, too?

And I sit here thinking of how the wingnuts like Malkin go off on hissy fits everytime some anonymous commenter posts on a progressive blog saying they wish Cheney’s last heart attack would have done him in, or that Rush would have died in the hospital. These people aren’t just hypocrites, they are sick and twisted assholes.

Blogging With Footnotes

Posted 1/18/10 at 9:56am by jamie

Yesterday news came out that the New York Times is ready to announce a new “pay for content” model for their website. There has been a lot of talk lately of news organizations moving to this system, and with one of the leading newspapers making taking the plunge it will only be a matter of time before we see more follow suit.

I have been very opposed to these moves for quiet some time. There are tons of other revenue generating models the organizations could use for their websites, but they have failed to even test them out. Just in terms of online advertising, there are new trends out there, such as site skins, that I haven’t seen any major news organization test out. These ads are by far the most profitable of them all so far, and would most likely generate a decent revenue boost for the faltering news companies.

This decision will spell trouble for blogs. First it will add to the overhead for bloggers, having to subscribe to news sites to find post worthy items. It doesn’t mean all blogs will have to do it. Sure some of the bigger ones will, but then the smaller blogs will have to rely on those bigger blogs for content. That’s the route I am taking.

Haiti Fundraiser Day 4

Posted 1/16/10 at 8:34pm by jamie

So far IntoxiNation has raised $65 for the people of Haiti. It might not seem like a lot, but every little bit helps and I am pleased considering the small size of my blog. If you have any extra money, please considering giving to a great cause. MercyCorps uses 100% of the money for the relief and your donation is tax deductible. Thank you so much for helping with this great cause.

You can give here.

My First Fundraiser

Posted 1/13/10 at 11:26pm by jamie

In almost 5 years of running IntoxiNation I have never ran a fundraiser. Tonight I am starting one, but not for me or for this blog. Rather my first fundraiser is for the people of Haiti. If you have some spare change to donate then please do so via this link. The donations are through MercyCorps, which is a 501(c)(3), making your donations tax deductible.

Thanks so much for helping out the people of Haiti in this devastating time.

Giuliani Claims We Had “No Domestic Terrorism Attacks” Under Bush

Posted 1/8/10 at 9:32am by jamie

This has got me absolutely speechless:

Mr. 9/11 himself, the man who was the mayor of the town that took the biggest hit on 9/11, is now denying it ever happened?

"What [Obama] should be doing is following the right things Bush did. One of the right things he did was treat this as a war on terror. We had no domestic attacks under Bush. We've had one under Obama," Giuliani said.

I hope people start asking him why he is denying that 9/11 actually happened. Again we have another example of Republicans who care nothing about terrorism, except as a political tool.

UPDATE:

George Stephanopoulos, who interviewed Giuliani when he made this absurd claim, posts the following on his blog:

“What he [Obama] should be doing is following the right things that Bush did -- one of the right things he did was treat this as a war on terror. We had no domestic attacks under Bush. We’ve had one under Obama,” Giuliani said. “Number two, he should correct the things that Bush didn’t do right. Sending people to Yemen was wrong, not getting this whole intelligence thing corrected.”

A Very Sad Anniversary

Posted 12/3/09 at 9:48am by jamie

It was 30 years ago today that eleven young people were trampled to death while trying to get in to see The Who in concert in Cincinnati. The main cause of the tragedy was “stadium seating”, where patrons got their seats on a first come first serve basis. It lead the way to Cincinnati imposing a 25 year ban on the practice, which sparked the same response from other cities around the country.

Here is news coverage of that cold December night in 1979:

To help remember this tragic event, one of the worst of its kind in our nation’s history, the Cincinnati Enquirer has opened up a special blog where readers can post the memories of that night. There is also a vigil being held in downtown Cincinnati tonight. Here’s hoping that tragedies like this never happen again.

Watch Empires Fall

Posted 11/22/09 at 6:58pm by jamie

Anyone who has read this blog for awhile should know how I like to talk about other empires in history and their sudden collapses and compare it to the rapid rise of the American empire. Here’s an interesting animation illustrating the fall of some of the biggest empires over the past couple of centuries.

While America isn’t represented yet, we can surely count on it in the future. To keep things in perspective, America has only been an empire for less than a century.

Condolences To John Amato

Posted 6/16/09 at 12:51pm by jamie

John and I have been working together for almost five years on Crooks and Liars and have become very close during that time. During that time we have transformed Crooks and Liars from a simple blog with downloadable video to a robust community with downloadable and embeddable media, and bigger changes are coming very soon (hence my light blogging lately). Some of the changes we have in the pipeline will not only help secure Crooks and Liars place as a leading blog, but will also open the blogging world up to some new and innovative ideas. I got to say that the work we are doing is a huge challenge, but very rewarding in the end.

John’s father passed away this weekend. I want to extend my thoughts and condolences to him and his family.
