Right Wing Blog Fail Of The Year!

Posted 7/22/12 at 1:15pm by jamie

There has been so much news this week that this story went pretty much unnoticed:

Connie Schultz, a Pulitzer prize-winning columnist and wife of Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, posted an E-mail exchange between herself and an unnamed, unwitting conservative blogger to her Facebook page Tuesday night.

The blogger emailed Schultz on July 9 to say, smugly: "Dear Ms. Shultz, We are doing an expose on journalists in the elite media who socialize with elected officials they are assigned to cover. We have found numerous photos of you with Sen. Sherrod Brown. In one of them, you appear to be hugging him. Care to comment?"

Schultz, of course, is married to Brown. She wrote back a day later: "Dear Mr. [Name Deleted]: I am surprised you did not find a photo of me kissing U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown so hard he passes out from lack of oxygen. He's really cute. He's also my husband. You know that, right?"

The unnamed blogger has yet to respond back to Connie. Apparently he's in an undisclosed location blaming the liberal media for his mistake.

Right Wing Blogger Arrested For Harassing Muslim Women

Posted 6/21/11 at 10:14am by jamie

During Netroots Nation, a conservative blogger was arrested for harrassing a couple of women because they were wearing Muslim hijabs (headscarves). From Minnesota Public Radio:

A St. Paul blogger faces misdemeanor charges after he allegedly harassed two Muslim women last week in downtown Minneapolis.

Minneapolis police say John Hugh Gilmore, 52, who writes a blog called Minnesota Conservatives, caused a scene Thursday night on Nicollet Mall. Sgt. Bill Palmer, a police spokesman, said Gilmore appeared to be drunk when he confronted the two women wearing the Muslim headscarf known as the hijab.

"Mr. Gilmore made some comments that he didn't believe the women should be in the United States, and that he thought that they were ruining America," Palmer said.

One of the women, University of Minnesota student Jamila Boudlali, said she's lived in Minnesota her entire life and has never been hassled about her religion.

John Aravosis, who was at the convention, has a great rundown, including this response from the prominent right-wing PJ TV:

Suddenly, a man from "PJ TV" stuck a microphone in front of the lead woman and started to question her. He got increasingly upset, and basically charged her, and me, with lying about the incident with the GOP blogger the other night, simply beacuse the woman couldn't recall the name of the GOP blogger who had been arrested. You can watch the beginning of the woman's statement, and the GOP "reporter" getting more and more upset with the woman, and with me.

Let's Get Weiner Straight

Posted 6/6/11 at 6:31pm by jamie

As you have most likely heard by now Anthony Weiner has admitted to sending the lewd photos of himself over the internet, including the now infamous bulge shot.

I can't begin to explain how frustrating this is. It's not for the main subject of this story, his bulge and internet habits, but rather for his handling of the whole situation. Weiner went out and made false claims of being hacked and a lot of his supporters, including myself, accepted that story. He lied to us all and that is inexcusable.

If Weiner would have come out last week and said "hey I made a stupid mistake and there might be more of these out there. I apologize for this", but he didn't. He became defiant and took to lying, knowing tons more evidence was floating around the inter-tubes.

Stupid? Stupidity doesn't even begin to describe this!

Then we have the whole Andrew Breitbart angle. Breitbart has no journalistic standards what-so-ever and sure didn't exhibit any in the handling of this story, but he did get it right. I know a lot on the left will still take to blaming Breitbart, but let's be honest with ourselves; if some blogger on the left got a picture of Boehner's flannel-clad boner that he sent to some girl, it would be picked up by every other blog on the left. That's the name of the game we all play.

There is one place that I still lay blame on this story and that is with the media. Yeah they should have reported it, but they have also kept on this story non-stop. Part of the blame does go to Weiner and his crap story at the beginning, but this story still garnered much more attention from the media than did the Mark Foley story, which is very similar except the fact that Weiner wasn't engaging in this activity with underage children.

But how does Weiner get off?

The Birth Of A Crapspiracy Theory - The Right Thinks Blogger Only Took Down Their Blogs

Posted 5/14/11 at 9:16am by jamie

Dale Gribble, a conspiracy theorist the right would be proud of.
This week the Blogger Platform suffered an outage that lasted over 24 hours. Blogger, which is owned by Google, is a very popular and free platform for publishing blogs. This outage affected nearly all of the blogs hosted on Blogger, but that didn't stop the right from springing into conspiracy mode. Here's RedState blogger Moe Lane:

Well, isn’t this interesting: apparently Blogger/Google has decided to remove Ann Althouse’s blog. They’re also being neither particularly helpful in either explaining why, nor sounding particularly sympathetic that it’s been taken down, either.

Wonder if this has anything to do with Ann’s objective (and thus, anti-administration) coverage of the Wisconsin protests? I certainly hope that it has nothing to do with that…

Ann Althouse quoted Moe's post and even added this tidbit:

Back in 2004, 98% of Google employees gave money to Democrats.

Who Is Really Politicizing The Tucson Shooting?

Posted 1/16/11 at 10:09am by jamie

Just like deciphering the start of a problem in grade school, you always got to look deep into the facts to distill rightwing rhetoric. Since the Tucson shooting the right has strummed up the chorus to scream and shout that the left needs to stop politicizing the event. While there was some politicization from the left, none of it has been as vitriolic as that coming from the right. It’s the old “practice what I preach, not what I do” rhetoric we have sadly become used to.

I pointed some of this out earlier this week when wingnut blogger Jim Hoft started a big stink saying that President Obama lied at the memorial service when he said Gabby Giffords first opened her eyes. It got so bad that the doctors actually had to stop treating patients to go out and answer questions about it, backing up what the President said. Of course to the right these doctors are nothing but leftist liars, which is really ironic when you think about how the right always says doctors hate Obama because of health care reform.

Sadly though that smear was just the start of it. Jim Hoft is continuing to point out the evils of the memorial event:

Just when you think popular right wing blogger Jim “Dim” Hoft (Gateway Pundit) couldn’t possibly post anything more stupid than his last post, he finds a way to take it to the next level of numbskullitude.

Today’s entry in the “Hoft Chronicles of Sheer Stoopit” has him trying to claim that the White House prompted the audience to applaud at the “Together We Thrive” memorial (with his usual taste and class, Hoft calls it a “pep rally”): If White House Was Surprised by Applause at Tucson Pep Rally… Why Did They Ask For It On Jumbotron?

Saxby Chambliss Calls Blogger “Joe My God” To Apologize Over Staffers Comment

Posted 10/1/10 at 8:26am by jamie

Last week a staffer for Senator Saxby Chambliss posted a comment on the blog Joe My God stating “all faggots must die”. We were unsure at the time if the investigation that we were told would take place would actually happen. Well it did and it has resulted in the removal of a staffer to Senator Chambliss and Chambliss himself calling Joe to apologize. I will give the Senator credit for handling this in a very appropriate way. So many times stories like this get buried and we never learn what really happened.

The RNC Kicks Breitbart Under The Bus

Posted 8/2/10 at 8:25am by jamie

It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy either:

The Republican National Committee has cancelled a fundraiser with conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, who is under fire for promoting an edited video that falsely portrays former Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod as having boasted about discriminating against a white farmer looking for her assistance.

Breitbart was scheduled to appear with RNC Chairman Michael Steele at a reception later this month in Beverly Hills.

Of course the RNC is treading lightly here. Breitbart is the BFF of the right-wing blogosphere and teabaggers, and the RNC doesn’t want to upset them, so they are in spin mode on the cancellation:

We are working on scheduling and we fully plan to have another event scheduled soon based on our existing trips to California,” an RNC spokesman said in a statement sent to CNN.

The spokesman said the fundraiser was cancelled “To better capitalize on the fall fundraising season that happens post-Labor Day, while also lowering costs by utilizing existing trips to California.”

The party that doesn’t mind spending thousands on strippers is now wanting to lower costs? Sure they are.

Will People Now Stop Listening To Internet Fraudster Breitbart?

Posted 7/21/10 at 10:47am by jamie

It’s amazing. The big media types all jumped on that ACORN video earlier this year, despite it being edited to be taken totally out of context. Now we this story of Shirley Sherrod, someone who has lost their job due to the journalistic malpractice of one Andrew Breitbart.

Over at the San Francisco Chronicle, a strong case is made to bring Breitbart to justice over this:

While he says he intended to harm the NAACP, he picked Shirley Sherrod to do it. She did not ask for this. Breitbart altered a video to twist her words.

Andrew Breitbart may be a target for the U.S. Department of Justice' Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section ("CCIPS") which is in the Criminal Division. The website, which was forwarded to this blogger by the DOJ on another issue, covers various types of crimes that involve a computer.

If Breitbart altered the video of Shirley Sherrod to make it look like she was making a statement he then called racist, he's certainly guilty of defamation of character against Shirley Sherrod.

Breitbart may also be guilty of Internet harassment. He certainly should be made a high-profile example to discourage others from these uses of the computer and The Internet to harass a person. Enough is enough.

There have been cases against internet commenters, let alone the publisher of an internet “news” site.

If in the “new media” age we want to be treated the same as traditional media, then all bloggers should get behind any legal action against Andrew Breitbart. He hurts the blogosphere as a whole by his intentional lies and smears published on his sites. Sure the left and right blogosphere disagree and they must to thrive, but to resort to such lying in order to advance an agenda and your own site; well that is unacceptable no matter if you are the most liberal or conservative of blogger.

Pa. Republican Attorney General Subpoenas Twitter

Posted 5/19/10 at 6:33pm by jamie

Via Techcrunch comes a very interesting story out of Pennsylvania. Republican Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate, Tom Corbett, has subpoenaed Twitter in attempts to identify some anonymous critics:

The account @CasaBlancaPA, whose owner is identified as ‘Signor Ferrari’ (a criminal in the film Casablanca, played by Sydney Greenstreet) on Twitter, links to this blog in the bio section. The blog, hosted on Google’s Blogger service, is dedicated to “exposing the hypocrisy of Tom Corbett” according to its subtitle.

This will be one of those cases to keep an eye on.

Obama Hatred Syndrome Runs Wild

Posted 5/14/10 at 1:47pm by jamie

Jane Hamsher blogging today asks:

Will Salazar Let BP Wait 20 Years To Compensate Gulf Fishermen?

What she is referring to is the 20 years it took for compensation to come out from the Exxon-Valdez spill. The problem is this wasn’t because of the executive branch or any administration. Jane even states the reason for the delay in her post:

Those promises were hollow.  Just ask John Platt, an Alaskan fisherman whose business was decimated by the Exxon-Valdez. spill.  Platt was one of 32,000 plaintiffs whose case was fought all the way to the Supreme Court by Exxon-Mobil.  It was finally settled last year.  Twenty years later, Platt — deeply in debt — saw his $400,000 settlement check go straight to the government for $600,000 he owed in fishing licenses,.  He still has to pay taxes on the settlement money.

Yup – blame Obama for the courts. Welcome to straw man fail, from a blogger we have (sadly) come to expect that from.

Right Wing Blogger Wants To ‘Euthanize’ Reid’s Wife

Posted 3/12/10 at 8:29pm by jamie

One of the bigger wingnut bloggers, Dan Riehl, is out using the horrible accident that Harry Reid’s family was in to push the lie of “death panels”:

Come on, Harry - do your civic duty. The nation's broke and counting on you guy. Pull the plug and get back to work. And don't bill us for a full day today, either. This is no time to be sloughing off. Air freight her home, you can bury her during recess on your own time and dime. Or are you going to bill us for that, too?

And I sit here thinking of how the wingnuts like Malkin go off on hissy fits everytime some anonymous commenter posts on a progressive blog saying they wish Cheney’s last heart attack would have done him in, or that Rush would have died in the hospital. These people aren’t just hypocrites, they are sick and twisted assholes.

Now This Is A Hell Of An Idea

Posted 3/11/10 at 8:25am by jamie

This whole “seniority” thing in the Senate has always been a bunch of garbage and helped contribute to the “good ole’ boys” club mentality that surrounds the chamber. Now it looks like it could be coming to an end:

During a question-and-answer session with progressive media, video blogger Mike Stark asked lawmakers why the Democratic caucus hasn't yanked Sen. Blanche Lincoln's chairmanship of the Agriculture Committee, considering her opposition to Democratic legislative efforts. In Arkansas, her gavel is a top selling point as she battles a progressive primary challenge.

"We're going to elect committee chairs next year," said Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). "The current chairs that are sitting there now understand that we'll be electing chairs next year," he added, saying the idea had been cleared with Senate leadership.

Under current rules, members of the caucus can weigh in by objecting to an overall Senate organizing resolution, but don't have an up-or-down vote on each chair.

That’s exactly how it should be. Take Lieberman as an example. The only reason he is still a Democrat is so that he can keep his seniority and have his Homeland Security chairmanship. It doesn’t matter if Jack Bauer himself became a senator, Lieberman would still be chair because of his seniority.

It’s practices like this that have made the Senate a laughing stock of the free world. I’m glad to see talk of ending it. If these people really think they should chair committees, then let them fight for it. It’s time for our senators to prove their worth.

Blogger For Andrew Breitbart’s BigGovernment Site Arrested

Posted 1/26/10 at 4:18pm by jamie

This is just to priceless:

The FBI, alleging a plot to wiretap Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's office in downtown New Orleans, arrested four people Monday, including James O'Keefe, a conservative filmmaker whose undercover videos at ACORN field offices severely damaged the advocacy group's credibility.

FBI Special Agent Steven Rayes alleges that O'Keefe aided and abetted two others, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan, who dressed up as employees of a telephone company and attempted to interfere with the office's telephone system.

A fourth person, Stan Dai, was accused of aiding and abetting Basel and Flanagan. All four were charged with entering fedral property under false pretenses with the intent of committing a felony.

James O’Keefe is a blogger for Andrew Brietbart’s BigGovernment web site and was one of the filmmakers who “exposed” ACORN. Over night O’Keefe became a hero of the right. I wonder how they will treat him now?

Hey Boston Globe – There Is More Than One Liberal Blog Voice

Posted 1/17/10 at 7:41pm by jamie

In an article talking about Tuesday’s race, the Boston Globe decides to talk to one single “liberal blogger” to gauge the feel of the entire blogosphere:

Liberal blogs are loaded with complaints about Obama and demands that the president move to the left. During the campaign, “they energized enthusiasm among people who were really jazzed about voting for change. When you look at what happened, there’s not much change,’’ said Jane Hamsher, who pens a left-leaning blog, FireDogLake

Jane does not represent the progressive blogosphere as a whole. As matter of fact she don’t even represent a majority of it. Her representation of what the progressive blogosphere stands for has been reduced to a slither.

Sure some of us have been disappointed in what hasn’t been done this past year, but most of us are realistic. We know that Obama’s hands were tied by an unprecedented obstructionist minority party. It’s also only his first year in office and he had a lot more on his plate than any former President in recent history. But to use Jane as a voice for us while she is out trying to join forces with groups like the tea party is absurd.

Jane Hamsher and Firedoglake in no way represent this liberal’s views and I think a lot more bloggers are going to be echoing this exact sentiment very soon.

Using “National Security” As An Excuse To Forgo Transparency

Posted 1/9/10 at 10:00am by jamie

Last November a document got leaked out, which outlined a new Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) being authored by the Obama administration. The internet part of this is really infuriating:

  • * That ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.
  • * That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.
  • * That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.
  • * Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM, even if doing so for a lawful purpose (e.g., to make a work available to disabled people; for archival preservation; because you own the copyrighted work that is locked up with DRM)
