The AP's Take On Feingold

Posted 7/22/07 at 10:01pm by jamie

As all have probably heard by now, Russ Feingold said he is introducing resolutions to censure Bush and Cheney. That is a great move, even though it isn't impeachment. Still, let's see how the AP reports this:

Liberal Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold said Sunday he wants Congress to censure President Bush for his management of the Iraq war and his "assault" against the Constitution.

But Feingold's own party leader in the Senate showed little interest in the idea. An attempt in 2006 by Feingold to censure Bush over the warrantless spying program attracted only three co-sponsors.

Feingold, a prominent war critic, said he soon plans to offer two censure resolutions — measures that would amount to a formal condemnation of the Republican president.

Now I am not trying to say Liberal is a bad word, but I find it interesting how the AP decided to throw it in there. Of course there are Democrats who are against it, but they will be dealt with the next time they run for office. We need action out of the Senate now. What has been happening isn't cutting it.

Will The Democrats Stop Their Pandering To The Right?

This entire debacle that has started by a very legitimate resolution offered by Russ Feingold has just got me fuming. His motion to censure Bush is by far one of the most reasonable requests that have been made in the 109th Congress. Rather you are for or against the wiretapping program, one thing remains - it shows the people Congress is acting.

Democrats are yelling and screaming about the censure resolution. Actually they are trying to play both sides of the fence. On one side is the "we oppose what Bush is doing and want more investigations" and on the other side is the "we believe Russ Feingold is out of touch with the people".

Here's something for these Democrats to consider. 34%. That is the approval rating of George Bush. Congress had no problem with censuring Clinton and he was at 60% at the time. Something else to consider is the fact that a majority of Americans oppose warrantless tapping. The only way they support it is if it's used against terrorists. Of course what proof do we have that it is being used against terrorists? A court ordered warrant is the guarantee of proof we are missing from that equation. That is the reason we have a 4th amendment. The constitution also says that the President and Congress swear to uphold it, not ignore whatever parts of it they want.

Frist Ready To Move On Censure Resolution

Think Progress is reporting that Frist has said they are ready to vote on the motion to censure Bush.

Minutes ago, Sen. Bill Frist said on the Senate floor that “we are ready to vote on” a censure of President Bush over warrantless domestic wiretapping “this afternoon or tonight.”

This might be one of the best things Frist has ever done. This is a perfect time to find out which Democrats are with us or with Bush. It is that simple. Feingold's motion is very moderate. He does not focus on Iraq, Katrina, the Economy, the CIA leak case or anything else. It is simply about the President being able to ignore the law or follow it when it comes to our basic rights under the Constitution of the United States. Any Democrat that does not support this resolution needs to get the hell out of the party now. The Republicans constantly say the Democrats have no unity. Well show them that they are wrong or give it up. It is as simple as that.

Censure Bush

I got to say this is big. I said in my Sunday Line Up post that "This Week" looked promising and indeed it was:

In an exclusive interview on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold called on the Senate to publicly admonish President Bush for approving domestic wiretaps on American citizens without first seeking a legally required court order.

"This conduct is right in the strike zone of the concept of high crimes and misdemeanors," said Feingold, D-Wis., a three-term senator and potential presidential contender.

He said President Bush had, "openly and almost thumbing his nose at the American people," continued the NSA domestic wiretap program.

This is the boldest step anyone has done in this Senate to try and write the wrongs of Bush. John Conyers introduced motions of censure last December but the Republican stronghold is to great on the House to get it to move anywhere. This could be the start of something big. You can view the interview at Crooks and Liars, and view the entire transcript at Raw Story. Just to mention, Frist followed up with trying to play the terrorism card again. True Frist is one of the very few who also supported Dubai taking over our ports.
