So Where Has Nader Been?

Posted 2/24/08 at 1:46pm by jamie

It's funny that we seem to only have Nader popping up every 4 years now. In the past year we have seen enormous consumer problems. Food recalls are becoming a daily occurrence. Countless items from China have been recalled and Americans are paying record amounts for oil, while the oil companies are enjoying record profits. Sounds like a perfect time for a "consumer advocate", doesn't it? So why hasn't Nader been out front speaking up on these issues?

It sounds to me like Ralph is more worried about his own political aspirations then he is about what got him to the point he is today. Screw the consumer, Ralphy boy wants to be President!

Would Stopping The Paper Delivery Trucks Constitute A Violation Of The First Amendment?

Posted 2/20/08 at 11:04am by jamie

That is an interesting argument raised by Michael Froomkin about the Wikileaks case:

This isn’t a classic prior restraint on speech since it reaches the registrar not the speaker — but it’s close enough to stopping the delivery trucks on a newspaper that I think this aspect of the decision is a cause for some First Amendment concern. The IP numbers for the site still work, though. Try 88.80.13.160.

Of course this ruling also makes us look more like China. Hopefully an upper court judge will overturn this poor decision.

What If They Shoot At The Satellite And Miss?

Posted 2/15/08 at 10:46am by jamie

We have the military getting ready to fire 5 missiles at the dead spy satellite in hopes to destroy it, before it falls to earth. So what happens if they shoot these five missiles and miss it? It would be an embarrassing blow to the missile defense system, which has already been met with a lot of scrutiny. Also since China successfully did the same thing last year, it would be an embarrassment on the international front.

I bet there are some nervous people at the DOD right now.

Damn - China Beat Us!

Posted 1/21/07 at 3:34pm by jamie

That is what this is all about:

China faced a barrage of international condemnation from London to Canberra yesterday after it was revealed that it had launched a missile attack on an ageing weather satellite, a test that threatened to open a "Star Wars" space race.

Formal protests were lodged with the Beijing government, accompanied by expressions of concern from world leaders, including Tony Blair. The Bush administration is privately seething over the event and is believed to be preparing to turn the incident into a major diplomatic spat.

(emphasis mine)

Bush isn't mad because they can blow our satellites up. He is mad because they beat us. Is it shocking they did? Our country ranks low for education. Our brightest minds end up leaving to go to other countries, where they can work more freely. This whole "blowing satellites up" thing isn't new. This is Star Wars that Reagan was pushing for during his time in office. It has been talked about for at least 20 years. Now suck it up George - China beat us. Is it really a good time to piss them off more and possibly get Russia into the mix backing them? Democrats need to watch his actions on this also.

The Backfire Of A Right Wing Talking Point

Posted 10/31/06 at 3:50pm by jamie

In the last few weeks we have heard the right-wing talking heads going on about how the Insurgents, Iran and North Korea are trying to influence the elections. This morning, we have the following as the big story:

North Korea agreed on Tuesday to return to six-party talks on dismantling its atomic weapons just weeks after staging its first nuclear test, and a U.S. envoy said he wanted to see "substantial progress" after a year-long hiatus.

Envoys from North Korea, the United States and China met in Beijing and agreed to resume the talks in the near future, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on its Web site.

So is North Korea still trying to influence the elections? Maybe they are. Perhaps they are hoping this will boost the Republicans chance of winning, because they know it is easier to screw with a Republican controlled America. They didn't have nukes under Clinton. They got them under Bush and even tested them. Chew on that one for awhile John Gibson.

US and India seal nuclear accord

The BBC have reported on the deal between the US and India to allow india access to US Civil Nuclear Technology

The US and India have finalised a controversial nuclear deal after talks in Delhi between President George W Bush and Indian PM Manmohan Singh.

Energy-hungry India will get access to US civil nuclear technology and open its nuclear facilities to inspection.

Mr Bush, on his first visit to India, called the deal "historic".

But he said it might be hard to get it through the US Congress, which must ratify it. India has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Political analysts are already saying the only reason Bush has done this is to contain 'China'

China And Iran Nearing An Oil Deal

Posted 2/18/06 at 3:40pm by jamie

Well I have been wondering where China would fit into the entire Iran debacle
and now we might know:

China is hastening to complete a deal worth as much as $100 billion that
would allow a Chinese state-owned energy firm to take a leading role in
developing a vast oil field in Iran, complicating the Bush administration's
efforts to isolate the Middle Eastern nation and roll back its nuclear
development plans, according to published reports.

China is quickly on its way to becoming a new super power in the world. When
it comes to Iran, this could spark a larger battle with us going against China
now. Also we must consider if China goes against us, Russia will do the same.
Considering how much we are in debt to China, are we really in a position for
this to happen?

Putin calls for Iraq troop pullout
timetable

By AFP

08/18/05 "AFP" -- -- Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a
timetable for the withdrawal of foreign military forces from Iraq.

"We deem it necessary to work out a schedule for the staged withdrawal of
foreign troops" in Iraq, Putin told reporters following talks with Jordan's
King Abdullah II.

"Many Iraqis perceive these forces as occupying forces, and this is a
reality that should be taken into account," the Russian leader said Thursday.

Putin also suggested an international conference on Iraq to be held by
year's end.

"We consider that holding that holding an international conference this
year would give a new impulse to the normalization of the situation" in Iraq,
the Russian leader told reporters.

Putin is not a good one to upset right now considering the growing ties
between Russia and China.

Iran Supplying Insurgents?

Australia:

US accuses Iran of supplying Iraqi
insurgent bombs

US intelligence believes that a cache of manufactured bombs seized in
Iraq about two weeks ago was smuggled into the country from Iran by the
Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

"We believe they came from Iran's Revolutionary Guards," the official told
AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The find is significant not only because of the Iranian connection but also
because it indicates manufactured bombs are now being introduced in a conflict
that has seen the use of mainly improvised explosive devices.

"I think we believe there is more of them out there, that this is just the
first cache we've actually obtained," the official said.

He said intelligence analysts had "fairly high confidence" that the bombs
came from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

So will we see this used as yet another excuse to go to war with Iran? At
this point nothing will shock me. You can bet the administration is already
looking at it and also considering the ties Iran has with China and Russia.
