Now It’s Nelson’s Turn

Posted 12/18/09 at 4:33pm by jamie

This is something me and a lot of the opposing factors to the latest HCR bill saw coming the other night when Democrats caved to Lieberman:

Nelson's key points:

  1. Asked if he would vote for cloture even if his initiative to restrict abortion were adopted, Nelson flatly said "no."
  2. Nelson not only said a vote before Christmas was not feasible, he joked about it taking until next Christmas.
  3. Nelson said unless the bill's Medicaid expansion provisions were made optional he would oppose cloture.
  4. Nelson said the bill's revenue provisions were unacceptable because the economy was bad.
  5. Nelson said because the subsidies which provide the bill's coverage expansion couldn't be paid for without additional revenue, they needed to be "scaled-back"
  6. Nelson also that unless cost control were addressed first, coverage couldn't be expanded.

So if the Medicaid expansion becomes optional then what about mandates? If Ohio decides to drop out and leave our current Medicaid requirement at 100% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), does that means someone at 101% of the FPL will now have to fork over for insurance? And if the answer to that is yes, then how much out of pocket will they pay for it with Nelson’s desires to scale back subsidies?

Honestly I can’t blame Nelson for this move one bit. He saw Lieberman get exactly what he wanted, so why not go for what he wants. It’s the same thing any of us would do, and the result of a weak Democratic leadership who has set a precedent to cave to these types of demands. So don’t go blaming Nelson for this – blame the Democrats, including the one at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Ignorance Is Hereditary

Posted 12/7/09 at 7:54am by jamie

Evidence now exists that the ignorance you exhibit could come from your parents:

Palin, though notoriously ill-traveled outside the United States, did journey far to the first of the four colleges she attended, in Hawaii. She and a friend who went with her lasted only one semester. "Hawaii was a little too perfect," Palin writes. "Perpetual sunshine isn't necessarily conducive to serious academics for eighteen-year-old Alaska girls." Perhaps not. But Palin's father, Chuck Heath, gave a different account to Conroy and Walshe. According to him, the presence of so many Asians and Pacific Islanders made her uncomfortable: "They were a minority type thing and it wasn't glamorous, so she came home." In any case, Palin reports that she much preferred her last stop, the University of Idaho, "because it was much like Alaska yet still 'Outside.' "

Sarah Palin apparently got her ignorance from her father. I would love to be a fly on the wall at Christmas dinner and hear what Sarah says to daddy about this comment. What’s really sad is that Palin’s “preferred” university happens to be in one of the whitest states in the union.

Reid Tells Democrats That Republicans Aren’t Interested In Passing A Bill

Posted 12/3/09 at 8:23am by jamie

Talk about the duh moment to top all duh moments:

In a closed-door meeting of his caucus, the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, told Democrats that Republicans were not interested in passing a bill. In effect, he prepared them for trench warfare, saying the Democrats must stick together and should be ready to work weekends to finish the bill before Christmas.

The blogs have been saying that for months. Hell even Republicans like Mitch McConnell said as much. Harry Reid is just now figuring this out? That’s some leadership there.

Then we have this lovely little tidbit:

For their part, Republicans said it was unrealistic to expect quick action on such a big bill, and they denied they were stalling.

Yeah right. That’s why the Republicans are even stalling on their own amendments. They are the obstructionist party of “No” and proving it more day by day.

Tis’ The Season To Deny Children

Posted 12/1/09 at 2:33pm by jamie

Scrooge It looks like some Texas charities are trying to ascertain a child’s status as a legal resident or not before allowing them to receive gifts in their toy drives:

They don't claim to know who's been naughty or nice, but some Houston charities are asking whether children are in the country legally before giving them toys.

In a year when more families than ever have asked for help, several programs providing Christmas gifts for needy children require at least one member of the household to be a U.S. citizen. Others ask for proof of income or rely on churches and schools to suggest recipients.

The Salvation Army and a charity affiliated with the Houston Fire Department are among those that consider immigration status, asking for birth certificates or Social Security cards for the children.

Because it is the children’s fault that their parents brought them here and didn’t work to become citizens. We are becoming a nation of Scrooges.

More Shoppers, Less Spending

Posted 12/1/09 at 10:33am by jamie

The Black Friday results show what was to be expected – a rather blue Christmas for retailers:

As the closely-watched Black Friday weekend winds down, a National Retail Federation survey conducted over the weekend confirms the expected: more people spent less. According to NRF’s Black Friday shopping survey, conducted by BIGresearch, 195 million shoppers visited stores and websites over Black Friday weekend*, up from 172 million last year. However, the average spending over the weekend dropped to $343.31 per person from $372.57 a year ago. Total spending reached an estimated $41.2 billion.

The good side of this for the shopper is that retailers will probably be running bigger sales this holiday season in hopes to draw in larger crowds.

CNN Loses Their In-House Racist

Posted 11/12/09 at 12:01am by jamie

That’s right – Lou Dobbs has announced that he is resigning from CNN effective immediately. Here is a clip of him announcing it on CNN tonight:

What the future for Dobbs is, I don’t know. Perhaps a gig at Fox News? Maybe we could even see a Palin-Dobbs ‘12 ticket? Oh now that one would be way too much fun, and Christmas is still over a month away.

Veto This Health Care Bill

Posted 9/8/09 at 10:56pm by jamie

Max Baucus, lap lizard for the insurance industry, has come up with his own plan:

Just as auto coverage is now mandatory, so would a requirement that all Americans get health insurance. Penalties for failing to get insurance would start at $750 a year for individuals and $1,500 for families. Households making more than three times the federal poverty level — about $66,000 for a family of four — would face the maximum fines. For families, it would be $3,800, and for individuals, $950.

If this some how passes through Congress then President Obama must veto it. He campaigned against mandates, and that is exactly what Baucus wants. This plan doesn’t fix health care for the public, it just gives the insurance companies a very huge Christmas present.

Was It The Cost Of The Ethics Complaints That Lead Palin To Resign?

Posted 7/6/09 at 9:05am by jamie

That seems to be the reason gaining the most traction, that Palin couldn’t work and the cost of defending herself against all the ethics complaints was too much to handle. Here’s a segment from FOX News where Sean Parnell, Palin’s successor, repeats just that.

I can buy that as a reason, but does that mean she is ready for the White House? Absolutely not. Think of Bill Clinton. During his tenure in the White House he faced over 50 ethics investigations, from Monica Lewinsky to who was on their Christmas card list, with only the former sticking. Throughout all that Clinton was able to  remain one of the most popular Presidents ever and do thinks like turn the deficit into a surplus.

So knowing that then who would be lay blame for these investigations on? Would it be the Democrats and liberal groups, who most likely filed most of the complaints against Palin, or would it be the Republicans, who started the entire culture of investigating our leaders? I would say the former. It would be nice if Republicans could also remember that. They thought it would be fun to bring ethics complaint after ethics complaint against our leaders, but when the tables are turned and the leader happens to be from their own party those investigations aren’t so much fun. It’s a level of hypocrisy that has very serious political consequences.

O'Reilly Gets Pwn3d Again

Posted 12/6/08 at 7:54am by jamie

Bill and his "War on Christmas". Oh how it ends up making him look like a buffoon.

Link: Or kelly

O'Reilly tries to use the Klan as an example in his argument and says that courts wouldn't allow them to make their own displays. Of course he is using MLK Day as his example in this, but let's go with Christmas. If a government allows Jewish people to display a menorah, would they allow the KKK to display a cross? By Bill's argument the answer would be no. If you go by the facts, the answer is yes, and it has been done - right here in Cincinnati.

24 Hours To Go

Posted 11/3/08 at 7:46am by jamie

Can you believe it's almost here? It's been such a long journey, but an historic one at that. CNN was reporting this morning that many states are reporting early voter turnout that exceeds the total turnout in 2004. Amazing! Also one the states that release early voting numbers by party affiliation, Democrats are getting 58% while Republicans are getting 42%.

It's going to be a long day, much like being a child and that day before Christmas.
