35 Years Of Known Problems With The Mark 1 Nuclear Reactors

Posted 3/16/11 at 9:50am by jamie

The reactors causing all the problems in Japan were made by G.E. In 1975 three engineers with G.E., who were reviewing the Mark 1 reactors, ended up resigning. Their reason? The Mark 1’s containment design in the even of a loss of cooling was so flawed that it would lead to disaster. Sound familiar? It should because that’s exactly what is happening in Japan right now.

But G.E. apparently believes in their “we bring good things to life” motto to much and refuse to see acknowledge that there could be a problem:

GE told ABC News the reactors have "a proven track record of performing reliably and safely for more than 40 years" and "performed as designed," even after the shock of a 9.0 earthquake.

“Performed as designed”? Is this a design performance of their reactors?

If there was ever a strong case for better government oversight, this is it. While the article doesn’t go into specifics, my guess is that higher-ups at G.E. didn’t like the research teams conclusion that the safety features were flawed. They figured it would cost to much money to fix, and in the end game, it’s all about money. Sure some will say “well if this is the case, G.E. will pay now”, but at what cost? How quick would these people change their tune if one of these reactors were in their backyard and this happened? Pretty damn quick I tell you!

Jean Schmidt Under Congressional Ethics Probe

Posted 2/15/11 at 9:01am by jamie

Living right next to Jean Schmidt’s district, I have followed her congressional career rather closely, which brought me to a conclusion a few years ago. Schmidt appears to be the type that thinks she can do anything she wants and not be held accountable for it. She is by far one of the more “rogue” members of Congress we have, so this comes as no shock:

The Office of Congressional Ethics is investigating Rep. Jean Schmidt’s receipt of legal assistance from a Turkish-American interest group that has represented her in a host of proceedings in Ohio, one of the Republican’s counsels confirmed Friday.

Schmidt attorney Bruce Fein declined to answer questions about how he is paid, saying he is responding to a request from the OCE, the board that reviews potential rules violations and recommends investigations to the House Ethics Committee.

This isn’t the first we heard of this. It was a hot issue in the 2008 election, when Democratic challenger, David Krikorian, brought it up during the campaign season. That ultimatley lead to Schmidt filling a complaint against Krikorian (you can see the background here and here).

It’s going to be interesting to see where the ethics committee goes with this. If Schmidt is found to have violated House rules, maybe the people of OH-02 can finally get some real representation.

Tea Baggers <3 Socialism!

Posted 11/3/10 at 10:34am by jamie

I’ve been looking at local results this morning and have come to one big conclusion – tea baggers love them some socialism!

We had two county wide tax levies here in Butler County, Ohio. One was for the parks system and the other was for senior services. Both levies ended up passing, but when you dig into the precinct by precinct data an interesting pattern emerges. The more conservative areas that helped reelect John Boehner by the widest margins also supported these levies by huge margins. That’s a real tell that you won’t hear about in the media. It will be interesting to see if this is a pattern that occurred in other areas of the country as well.

Matthews Apologizes For Calling West Point ‘Enemy Camp’

Posted 12/2/09 at 6:07pm by jamie

I got a feeling tweety felt an awful lot of heat today.

Transcript via Think Progress:

MATTHEWS: Now I’ve heard too many politicians say things like, “oh that was taken out context” to explain something they wish they hadn’t said let me just say to the cadets, their parents, former cadets and everyone who cares about this country and those who defend it: I used the wrong words and worse than that I said something that is just not right and for that I deeply apologize.

As those who watch me regularly probably got right away, my point was that the military up at West Point was probably a skeptical audience for President Obama given his strong position against the war in Iraq and generally more dovish image. I was wrong to make that conclusion based on the lack of applause or apparent enthusiasm in the ranks of officers and cadets last night.

Keeping The Spotlight On Her

drug bust Sarah Palin just keeps getting more and more attention:

A 42-year-old Wasilla woman was arrested Thursday at her home by Alaska State Troopers with a search warrant in an undercover drug investigation. Sherry L. Johnston was charged with six felony counts of misconduct involving a controlled substance.

Johnston is the mother of Levi Johnston, the Wasilla 18-year-old who received international attention in September when Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, announced their teenage daughter was pregnant and he was the father. Bristol Palin, 18, is due on Saturday, according to a recent interview with the governor's father, Chuck Heath.

Troopers served the warrant at Johnston's home at the "conclusion of an undercover narcotics investigation," said a statement issued Thursday by the troopers as part of the normal daily summary of activity around the state.

Troopers charged Johnston with second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance -- generally manufacturing or delivering drugs -- as well as fourth-degree misconduct involving controlled substances, or possession.

Wasilla is known as the crystal meth capital of Alaska. Even though the article doesn’t say exactly what it was she was busted with, one can only assume. The Wassilla-billies strike again!

Thank You George Bush!

For exploiting a new technique of discipline to U.s. employers:

A supervisor at a motivational coaching business in Utah allegedly used waterboarding on a member of his sales team to motivate staff, according to a lawsuit filed by an employee, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Chad Hudgens, a former salesman for Prosper, Inc., in Provo, Utah, alleges his manager, Joshua Christopherson, asked him to lie on a hill before he poured water from a gallon jug into Hudgens' mouth and nostrils as other sales staff held him down, the paper reports.

"At the conclusion of his abusive demonstration, Christopherson told the team that he wanted them to work as hard on making sales as Chad had worked to breathe while he was being waterboarded," the paper said the suit alleges. The lawsuit was filed in January.

He has made America such a great place. Mark your calendars - National Waterboard Your Eomployees Day has been declared.

James Carville And Paul Begala Banned At CNN

Posted 1/25/08 at 8:51am by jamie

From Greg Sargent

Okay, this is interesting. I've just learned that CNN has told top Dem strategists James Carville, Paul Begala, and Robert Zimmerman -- who are CNN mainstays but are all Hillary supporters -- that they will not be doing any more political analysis on the network until the Democratic primary has reached a conclusion.

I'm also told that this move came after the Obama campaign repeatedly complained to high level officials at CNN about the presence of Carville and Begala on the network.

This has been brewing for months now. It's good to see CNN make the right decision in the matter.

<s>Clinton </s> Cheney Did It

Posted 1/28/07 at 5:34pm by jamie

Remember last year when Clinton had that sit down with Chris Wallace on FOX News? He was tired of everyone saying he caused 9/11, so he let Chris know about it. The wingnuts quickly jumped on it and was calling him things like "unhinged".

Well CNN just re-aired the Wolf Blitzer interview of Dick Cheney. Actually seeing it all at once, I have come to a big conclusion. If Clinton was "unhinged" with Wallace, then Cheney was down right combative with Blitzer. The most distinguishing factor is that during Clinton's interview there was an attempt to rewrite history, while the Cheney interview involved the most important current event in our nation - Iraq.

Cheney exhibited such a massive disconnect from not only the people of this country, but also George Bush, that he should be forced out of office. This level of hostility people in the administration shows towards the American people is not acceptable. They talk about showing divide towards our enemy - yet the unwarranted attacks of people like Cheney sends this message stronger than any debate in Congress. I guess Cheney was just working to embolden our enemy even more.

Hostage Nation

OK - Now I have no doubts there is some conspiracy behind the high gas prices and Bush has helped me come to this conclusion:

President Bush on Tuesday ordered a temporary suspension of environmental rules for gasoline, making it easier for refiners to meet demand and possibly dampen prices at the pump. He also halted for the summer the purchase of crude oil for the government's emergency reserve.

The moves came as political pressure intensified on Bush to do something about gasoline prices that are expected to stay high throughout the summer.

Bush said the nation's strategic petroleum reserve had enough fuel to guard against any major supply disruption over the next few months.

"So, by deferring deposits until the fall, we'll leave a little more oil on the market. Every little bit helps," he said

Amazing that instead of finding out is the gas companies are really up to no good we just pass the buck to mother nature. The gas companies have long been opponents of the environmental regulations and Bush just gave them what they wanted. I thought our country didn't not negotiate with terrorist?

Patrick Leahy's Round Of Questions

Posted 2/6/06 at 3:47pm by jamie

Patrick Leahy asked if Gonzalez came to the conclusion that the authorization
to use force gave the power to the President to authorize the taps before the
authorization was passed by Congress. Gonzalez said he hadn't come to the
conclusion but would not answer if others had. The authorization for force was
on September 14, 2001 and the President authorized the program on September 18,
2001. Gonzalez tried to beat around the question by bringing up the attacks on
the shock of them but Leahy would not go for it and told Gonzalez "I was hear on
September 11, I don't need to hear about it".

Leahy asked if this law gave authorization to open first class mail of US
citizens. Gonzalez would not answer the question and kept tap dancing around it.

Americans Not To Optimistic After The Sotu

Posted 2/1/06 at 5:08pm by jamie

The post speech analysis seemed to all come to one conclusion last night -
Bush was trying to unite the country. So did Americans come to the some
conclusion?

According to the latest SUSA
poll,
Bush failed on that attempt but not by much. 44% of those polled feels
he will divide the country more while 40% feel he will unite the country. 16%
wasn't sure.

Only 53% of the respondents felt that Bush focused on the issues most
important to them as compared to 41% who felt he didn't. This number is actually
kind of shocking. Iraq has been the number one issue and he spent 1/2 of his
speech on the subject. I got a feeling people are getting smarter and can see
through his rhetoric a lot easier now.

Another very interesting part of the poll focused on Bush telling the truth
about Iraq. 36% felt Bush was telling the whole truth while 37% thought he was
shading the truth. Those numbers are close but here is the alarming number. 23%
feel Bush is intentionally misleading when it comes to the situation in Iraq.
Basically that means 60% feel he is lying.

The final numbers on the poll conducted last night should send alarms through
the White House. 53% feel Bush is out of touch with the American people as
compared to 42% who feel he is in touch.

According to a new
Gallup/CNN
poll
, Bush had the lowest level of positive response to his speech since he
has been in office.
