Did Obama Pass The Big Test?

Posted 4/13/09 at 8:13am by jamie

Remember when Joe Biden said someone would really test Obama early in his presidency? Well I would consider the pirates capturing U.S. ships and crew as a test, and after yesterday’s news of the Hollywood style rescue of captain Richard Phillips, it looks like he passed his first big military test.

For President Obama, last week's confrontation with Somali pirates posed similar political risks to a young commander in chief who had yet to prove himself to his generals or his public.

But the result -- a dramatic and successful rescue operation by U.S. Special Operations forces -- left Obama with an early victory that could help build confidence in his ability to direct military actions abroad.

Oh and he passed it without having to resort to Reagan style hostage negotiation deals. Of course the right is spinning this and trying to give the administration no credit at all.

Mr. Conservative David Vitter Causes Scene At Airport

Posted 3/11/09 at 9:51am by jamie

If it isn’t his involvement with hookers, then its something else:

Vitter, according to the witness, remained defiant, yelling that the employee could call the police if he wanted to and their supervisors, who, presumably, might be more impressed with his Senator’s pin.

But after talking a huffy big game, Vitter apparently thought better of pushing the confrontation any further. When the gate attendant left to find a security guard, Vitter turned tail and simply fled the scene.

And if that was you or me they would be checking video tapes to figure out who we were then paying us a visit.

Amazing - More From The Rightwing Loons

Posted 2/1/07 at 3:22pm by jamie

The right wing loons are at it again. Aravosis has a complete run down of their latest attack and this time it is on the Capital Police. Here is a prime example, but please read the entire thing:

1. ALLEGATION: The Capitol Police "allowed" the protesters to spray paint the US Capitol - the police saw the protesters defacing the property and did nothing about it because the chief of police ordered his fellow officers to let the evil protesters do whatever they wanted.

TRUTH: The Police had no idea that a small group was defacing anything, and had they seen the defacement, there would have been immediate arrests. And I quote the chief of police:

Some members of this group did covertly mark the pavement on the Lower West Terrace during their confrontation with us. Had this been observed, I would have directed arrests to be made. However, the size and continual movement of the crowd provided concealment and made detection of their actions impossible. Once the crowd dispersed, I was appalled and disgusted that any individual, whatever their cause, would deface the grounds of the Capitol. Fortunately, due to the notable efforts of the staff of the Architect of the Capitol, their signs of disrespect were quickly washed away.

Now the war bloggers are up in arms over this and wanting to "jam" the switchboards at the Capital Police:

Dubai Update

Posted 3/9/06 at 7:24pm by jamie

The Washington Post now has the story up regarding Dubai's pull out:

The United Arab Emirates company that was attempting to take over management operations at six U.S. ports announced today that it will divest itself of all American interests.

The announcement appears to head off a major confrontation that was brewing between Congress and the Bush administration over the controversial deal.

Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) announced on the Senate floor shortly before 2 p.m. that Dubai Ports World would "transfer fully the operations of U.S. ports to a U.S. entity." Warner, who had been trying to broker a compromise on the issue, said DP World would divest itself of U.S. interests "in an orderly fashion" so as not to suffer "economic loss."

Now I am wondering if Bush didn't pull some strings with his buddies over there to try and get this deal shot down. Last thing he wanted was a big showdown with Republicans during the mid-term election year. Of course they can still use the entire debacle as a scapegoat for saying "see we don't rubberstamp for the administration". Funny how it all happened at the same time Congress tries to sneak through legislation giving the Bush administration greater access to wiretapping.

Congress Versus White House Show Down To Come?

Posted 3/8/06 at 3:27am by jamie

While the AP spent tonight reporting on the passing of the Patriot Act as a major victory for Republicans, the Washington Post was busy getting an article ready for tomorrow's print edition. That article talks about a House GOP effort to block the Dubai ports deal:

Efforts by the White House to hold off legislation challenging a Dubai-owned company's acquisition of operations at six major U.S. ports collapsed yesterday when House Republican leaders agreed to allow a vote next week that could kill the deal.

Appropriations Committee Chairman Jerry Lewis (R-Calif.) will attach legislation to block the deal today to a must-pass emergency spending bill funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A House vote on the measure next week will set up a direct confrontation with President Bush, who sternly vowed to veto any bill delaying or stopping Dubai Ports World's purchase of London-based Peninsular & Oriental Steamship Co

Attaching this to the Iraq and Afghanistan funding bill is an excellent move. Bush vows to veto and legislation blocking the ports deal but will he do it when it also means vetoing the funding for his wars? This will definitely set the stage for a show down between the White House and both sides of the aisle in Congress on this very important issue.

Of course tomorrow can always bring something new and I can almost hear it now. They will try to spin this into being partisan politics that is to blame on the Democrats. Not sure how yet but they will find a way.

White House Won't Share Domestic Spying Documents

Posted 2/2/06 at 5:34am by jamie

Hmm does this really shock anyone? From this morning's

New York Times
:

The Bush administration is rebuffing requests from members of the Senate
Judiciary Committee for its classified legal opinions on President Bush's
domestic spying program, setting up a confrontation in advance of a hearing
scheduled for next week, administration and Congressional officials said
Wednesday.

The Justice Department is balking at the request so far, administration
officials said, arguing that the legal opinions would add little to the
public debate because the administration has already laid out its legal
defense at length in several public settings.

Article continues

here.

Well hopefully yesterday's events will help form what happens here. The White
House refused to turn over documents on the response to Katrina. Of course they
were claiming "executive privilege".

The GAO comes out
with a report faulting the White House and Homeland
Security for the response. Perhaps the same will come out of this. The White
House won't turn over documents and once again the White House will be proven in
the wrong. Of course it pisses me off to no end that the Republicans had no
problem at all issuing subpoenas about Clinton's blow job yet issues of our
constitution and our response to disasters they won't even consider that power.
