Just What We Need – Another Special Election

Posted 12/14/09 at 8:53am by jamie

Now it’s Hawaii’s turn to have a special election:

In the midst of a gubernatorial campaign, Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) announced Friday that he will be resigning from Congress, necessitating a special election to fill out the remainder of his term.

“This is an extremely difficult decision for me, but I must do this to continue with the direction I’ve chosen for the future,” Abercrombie said in a statement. “Accordingly, I’ve concluded that I must resign my congressional seat and allow someone to be elected who will carry on the work of this office.”

Acorn Funding Restored By Judicial Order

Posted 12/12/09 at 9:07am by jamie

A lot of us were totally expecting this, but not this fast:

Today, U.S. District Judge Nina Gershon granted a preliminary injunction against the United States for unconstitutionally withholding funds from ACORN. In its decision, the court found that there is a likelihood the plaintiffs will be able to show that Congress’ targeted defunding of ACORN violates the Constitution’s prohibition against Bills of Attainder, legislative acts which single out a specific person or group for punishment.

The Court’s ruling stated, “The plaintiffs have raised a fundamental issue of separation of powers.  They have been singled out by Congress for punishment that directly and immediately affects their ability to continue to obtain federal funding, in the absence of any judicial, or administrative, process adjudicating guilt... The public will not suffer harm by allowing the plaintiffs to continue work on contracts duly awarded by federal agencies...”

This whole issue came to fruition because the weak-kneed Democrats once again caved to the very small minority of the right. Hopefully this case will go all the way up to SCOTUS and they will uphold the ruling.

High Premiums In The Senate Bill

Posted 12/11/09 at 9:16am by jamie

The New York Times is reporting that the Senate bill will result in much higher premiums.

One example is a family of 4 earning $54,000 in 2016. They would be elligible for a $10,100 subsidy under the new system, but if they buy into the most popular federal plan then the monthly premiums would be more than $20,000 a year. After the subsidy that would leave the family paying $825 a month for coverage.

In another example, the NYT looks at the Medicare buy in. They are reporting that it will cost about $7,600 a year for a single person, or $633 a month.

If these numbers are true then this healthcare bill needs to fail, because that’s exactly what it is – a failure. If it doesn’t then Congress must look at doing a drastic raise of the minimum wage as well as a big increase in the federal poverty levels.

The one thing I have noticed lacking from information coming out is the issue of cost containment. What is in the new bill to reduce the extremely high costs Americans suffer for health care? That’s something I would really like to see.

Kent Conrad Is One Sorry Sack Of Monkey Balls

Posted 12/9/09 at 7:39pm by jamie

Here’s Conrad’s latest:

Kent Conrad is pushing to decouple this Medicare buy-in from Medicare. Conrad wants to make it fake Medicare. He wants people in this fake Medicare to pay much higher reimbursement rates. and be placed in a separate risk pool. The people in fake Medicare might not even be able to use the Medicare provider network. This will make the premiums for Medicare buy-in dramatically higher, and might make the entire fake Medicare program unworkable. Already, the Federal Association of Hospitals is pushing for something like this change to gut the proposal.

Conrad is nothing but an insurance industry whore. Maybe it’s time to start calling his office and ask who he really represents – the people or the corporations?

The Commerce Clause

Posted 12/9/09 at 11:16am by jamie

Something that has been really bothering me is how Democrats are saying they can force citizens to buy insurance because of the “commerce clause” of the Constitution:

To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;

If this clause gives Congress the power to force you and me to buy insurance from the private health insurance companies, then shouldn’t the same clause be used to force the health care industry to reign in costs? It seems like the later would be a much better item to tackle before the former.

Did We Forget About Executive Privilege?

Posted 12/4/09 at 12:10pm by jamie

I keep thinking back to the Bush years and every time someone in Congress wanted someone from the Bush administration to testify the Republicans would give cover to Bush by arguing about “executive privilege”. At that time so many of us on the left kept thinking “I wonder if they will do the same when we have a Democrat in the White House”. Well now we know:

Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican, joined Sanchez in demanding Rogers' testimony on Friday, a day after Secret Service director Mark Sullivan took responsibility for the incident in an appearance before the House Homeland Security Committee.

Peter King was one of those that constantly helped Bush with cover from congressional testimonies. Apparently to King the White House should only be exempt if a Republican is in it. Forget what the actual issue is, because he sure didn’t want Bush officials to testify when it was about Walter Reed or the failing wars. Those issues are no where as important as someone showing up uninvited at the White House.

Salahis Refuse To Testify Before Congress And May Now Be Subpoenaed

Posted 12/3/09 at 11:06am by jamie

NPR:

"The Salahis' testimony is important to explain how a couple circumvented layers of security at the White House on the evening of a state dinner without causing alarm," Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson, the committee chairman, said in a statement released by his committee last night. "If the Salahis are absent from tomorrow's hearing, the committee is prepared to move forward with subpoenas to compel their appearance."

Subpoena? Please. What Thompson should do is simply revoke the invitation of the Salahis to testify, then they will show up….er “crash” the hearing.

Tis’ The Season – 1 In 6 Americans Going Hungry

Posted 11/17/09 at 10:49am by jamie

Statistics like this in the richest nation on the planet are totally unacceptable:

The number of Americans that have trouble putting food on the table shot up last year in an unprecedented spike to a record 17 million households, the government reported on Monday.

The Department of Agriculture report, which has been released annually since 1995, said the number of Americans that were hungry rose to 14.6%. In 2007, 13 million households or 11.1% of Americans had trouble getting enough food.

The one-year jump is all the more significant, given the number of hungry Americans had never been higher than 11.9% since these surveys began.

And what do we hear from our leaders on statistics like this? Nothing but crickets. I’m not going to single out one party or another here, as the issue of hunger is non-partisan. Instead the deafening silence from Congress and the White House as a whole should be considered a crime. All they seem to worry about is their buddies on Wall Street, while turning a blind eye to the American people. Again – that is a crime.

Tweetville Update

Posted 11/16/09 at 5:31pm by jamie

I did some upgrades to the new Tweetville application this weekend. It now supports drilldown rooms. How this work is that you can select a root room like Congress and view everyone in Congress. If you want to limit it to one party then you can select that party in the sub-room of Congress. There is also an “All” room now that will show the tweets of everyone being followed in Tweetville.

Last night while watching TV I kept my laptop opened to Tweetville and it was really interesting watching the conversations going back and forth, especially in the new media room. I hope everyone enjoys this new feature.

Allowing "Mentally Incapacitated" Vets to Buy Guns

Posted 11/16/09 at 1:18pm by jamie

Given the Ft. Hood tragedy, a bill authored by Richard Burr (R-NC) is coming into light:

Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) says his "Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act" will protect veterans' gun rights. But the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence calls it a "dangerous" proposal that could allow "over 100,000 mentally incapacitated or incompetent persons" to buy guns—people who would previously have been barred from doing so by the Veterans Administration (VA).

Absolutely amazing. That’s what we need – more unstable people with guns. And here is the real irony. Burr opposes healthcare reform, something that could have saved the lives of over 2,200 veterans last year. If he was truly concerned about veterans rights then he would work to protect their right to affordable healthcare. As matter of fact we should all take a moment and tell Burr to do exactly that:

Tom Coburn Wants Vets To Suffer

Posted 11/12/09 at 11:59am by jamie

This man shouldn’t be allowed to call himself American let alone Senator:

Speaking Friday on the Senate floor about a procedural hold that is blocking passage of S. 1963, the Veterans’ Caregiver and Omnibus Health Benefits Act, Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, said “it would be truly disgraceful” if the bill didn’t clear the Senate by Veterans’ Day.

Akaka said the bill represents a bipartisan collection of veterans’ committee proposals packaged into one bill so it could quickly pass. Consideration of the measure is being blocked by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., who doesn’t want the measure brought up unless he is given an opportunity to offer amendments.

“This single senator is denying veterans many benefits and services,” Akaka said, including a new caregiver assistant program at families of the “most seriously wounded veterans.”

Having a bill like this finally pass on Veteran's Day would have been a great way to thank all the people who have served our nation so selflessly, but Tom Coburn would rather play politics with the life and well being of our heroes. This is absolutely disgraceful.

Gresham Barrett Sends Out A Video To Our Veterans

Posted 11/11/09 at 10:32pm by jamie

vdgbtwt

Not really thanking them or honoring them directly, just asking them to go to his campaign website to view this:

Yet somehow Gresham overlooks the grueling fact that over 2,200 veterans died last year and didn’t have health insurance. Gresham was also another “no” vote for healthcare this past weekend.
