congressional seat

BREAKING: The Hammer Falls

Posted 11/24/10 at 6:27pm by jamie

tom_delay_mugshotA little something more to give thanks for tomorrow as Tom Delay was just found guilty of money laundering:

A Travis County jury today found former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay guilty of political money laundering charges relating to a corporate money swap in the 2002 elections.

The verdict came down five years after DeLay was forced to step down as the second most powerful Republican in the U.S. House. The charges also led DeLay to resign from his Sugar Land congressional seat in 2006.

DeLay was accused of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. On the conspiracy charge, DeLay faces a sentence of two to 20 years in prison and five to 99 years or life in prison on the money laundering count.

So we now find out that it wasn’t the “criminalization of politics”, but rather the “criminalization of breaking the law”.

Just What We Need – Another Special Election

Now it’s Hawaii’s turn to have a special election:

In the midst of a gubernatorial campaign, Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-Hawaii) announced Friday that he will be resigning from Congress, necessitating a special election to fill out the remainder of his term.

“This is an extremely difficult decision for me, but I must do this to continue with the direction I’ve chosen for the future,” Abercrombie said in a statement. “Accordingly, I’ve concluded that I must resign my congressional seat and allow someone to be elected who will carry on the work of this office.”

Boehner To Get A Primary Challenge?

Posted 4/28/09 at 8:51pm by jamie

09_sheriff It looks like that could be the case:

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones has taken the first step to challenge U.S. House Minority Leader John Boehner in next year’s GOP primary.

Jones pulled a petition at the Butler County Board of Elections Tuesday, April 28, to take on the West Chester Twp. Republican in the May 4, 2010, primary for the U.S. 8th Congressional District.

He now has until Feb. 19, 2010, to collect 50 signatures and pay a $85 filing fee.

Jones made it clear Tuesday night that all he did was pick up a petition, he is not at this point a candidate for the congressional seat.

Rick Jones is pretty popular around here, so if he decides to run it could end up being a pretty major challenge to Boehner. I don’t care for either one politically, but I think Jones would be a big improvement over do-nothing John.

Cheney Is Quick To Exploit The Middle East Problems

Posted 7/21/06 at 11:31pm by jamie

Leave it to Cheney to find a way to exploit the devastation in the Middle East:

Vice President Dick Cheney on Friday pointed to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah as fresh evidence of the ongoing battle against terrorism that underscores the need to keep President Bush's Republican allies in control of Congress.

"This conflict is a long way from over," Cheney said at a fundraising appearance for a GOP congressional candidate. "It's going to be a battle that will last for a very long time. It is absolutely essential that we stay the course."

Cheney's visit to Tampa helped raise about $200,000 for the campaign of Gus Bilirakis, a state legislator who is running for the Tampa Bay area congressional seat his father, Michael, is vacating.

"Gus is going to remember that the first order of business is to protect the American people and to support the men and women who defend us in time of war," Cheney told the audience at a $500-a-ticket fundraising reception. "There's still hard work ahead in the war on terror."

Cheney said that as Republicans make their case to voters in the midterm elections, "it's vital that we keep issues of national security at the top of the agenda." He faulted Democrats in Congress who have pushed for a timetable for withdrawing Americans from Iraq, saying that would send the wrong message to terrorists.

Yes Mr. Cheney - because we all know about Bush's "Roadmap to Peace". I believe history shows which party has a better track record when dealing with problems in the Middle East and how effective their diplomacy is. That sure as hell isn't Bush's party.

Bob Ney - Internet Tough Guy

Posted 6/9/06 at 4:37pm by jamie

Looks like the Abramoff stuff is really starting to piss off Bob Ney:

Rep. Bob Ney, under enormous political and legal pressure for more than a year, has lashed out against press coverage of his plight, voicing great displeasure over stories focusing on the controversial golfing trip to Scotland that threatens his grip on the congressional seat he has held for six terms.

In two rambling e-mails sent from his Blackberry device to Copley News Service reporter Paul Krawzak, the Republican congressman from Ohio ridiculed the veteran reporter, challenging his ethics and mocking the 5-foot-7-inch Krawzak as “big man.”

The trigger for Ney’s rage was Krawzak’s coverage, carried in The Times-Reporter and its sister Copley Ohio newspapers, The Repository and The Independent, of the trial of White House procurement official David H. Safavian. Safavian is accused of lying and obstructing the criminal investigation of the once-powerful and now-discredited Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Now here is where we really get into some good bar brawling words by the man who was dubbed "the mayor of Capital Hill":

“Let me tell you paul-last week you did not call us for comment ‘you were under deadline,’” began Ney, who then reflected his belief that his critics just keep recycling the same story about the golf trip. “Print the same story-change it to reprint the same story-people in new philly – d’s and r’s call it ‘elk’s politics.’”

He concluded his message with “Go for it – harass my wife and daughter a little bit more big man – maybe I will take out an add talking about your ethics.” The reference to his wife and daughter reflected his continuing anger that earlier this year another Copley News Service reporter, based in Ohio, interviewed his neighbors and knocked on his door seeking comment from his wife.

Boehner Gets Some Competition.

Posted 2/16/06 at 5:56am by jamie

Mort Meier, 73, a retired bond underwriter from Hamilton, announced
Monday he will challenge new House Majority Leader John Boehner of West
Chester for the Ohio 8th District Congressional seat this fall. In a
statement released by Dan Gattermeyer, chairman of the Butler County
Democratic Party, Meier said was motivated to come out of retirement "to
help increase the strength and restore the reputation of America." Meier,
who did not return a call for comment, attacked Boehner's ties with
lobbyists and pledged not to accept any contribution of more than $5 from
any individual, group or corporation. He ran unsuccessfully against Boehner
in the GOP primary 15 years ago, and switched to the Democratic Party in
2000.

This is really good news. I got the privilege of signing the petition for his
candidacy tonight. I don't know that much on Mr.Meier yet but intend to find out
so I can report back. Boehner is not a popular person here in OH-8 so this
should be a good race and hopefully come out with a win for the Democrats.

Another Fighting Dem

Posted 2/9/06 at 3:05pm by jamie

Looks like the Democrats have recruited another veteran to serve in Congress:

PENNSYLVANIA. Dems have recruited another top notch candidate to place
another Congressional seat in play. Navy Admiral Joe Sestak -- who retired
last months after 31 years in the military -- has announced his candidacy
against ten-term Congressman Curt Weldon (R) in the CD-7 race. Sestak, who
has a master's degree in public administration from Harvard, is the former
Deputy Chief of Naval Operations and a former high-ranking National Security
Council staff member

For the military supporting Bush and the Republicans so much, how come the
Democrats have so many more veterans running than the Republicans do? Perhaps
this is the fallout from swift boating.

Jean Schmidt - The New Wicked Witch

Posted 7/31/05 at 6:11pm by jamie

I just finished watching a debate between Jean Schmidt and
Paul Hackett, the two running for the 2nd congressional seat of Ohio.
After seeing this, I really see the even darker, and more blinded side of the
Republican – Jean Schmidt.

Paul Hackett, who returned from Iraq this past spring, was
stationed in Fallujah helping to train Iraqi forces. As a Major in the Marines,
he has the inside perspective we need in Washington when it comes to this war.
He identified the problems facing the troops when it comes to training the
Iraqis and has suggestions on how to improve them.

Jean Schmidt on the other hand does not agree with her
opponent. She feels all Mr. Hackett is doing is parroting the Democrats points
of views on the war. She says this while continuously mimicking the President’s
address to the nation verbatim. She feels we are doing everything right and Iraq
is on course. Of course the fact that she attends the funerals of local fallen
soldiers makes her an expert on this matter, as she indirectly stated on
Hardball Friday Night (see the clip at
Crooks and Liars).

The most ironic part of the entire debate was on the issue
of social security. Paul Hackett sees a system that isn’t broken but rather
“bent”. He feels the biggest improvements would come in more responsibility of
our government not to use social security as a “slush fund”. He also stands firm
on the ground that the cap should be raised on social security since every
American has an obligation to its people.
