I Really Hope Our Troops In Iraq And Afghanistan Fail

Posted 2/26/09 at 4:10pm by jamie

Without reading past my headline, I wonder how many on the right would quickly see that, especially if it appeared on a site like DKos or Huffington Post, and start yelling calling me an America hater?

Well I don’t wish for our troops to fail in the least. That’s why I never said things like “I hope George Bush fails”. I did call him a failure, but I never wished him to fail.

So why is it fine and dandy for Rush Limbaugh to declare his desire for the failure of our commander in chief? At a time when we are at two wars, with the end to one in site, shouldn’t he be hoping our President is a success? No. Instead Rush has now twice declared his desire for our President to fail since Inauguration Day.

We can quickly say he is wanting to see our economy tank, but Rush isn’t being very specific by saying “I hope he fails”, so we must also assume he is making that wish for Obama’s constitutional duty as commander in chief, which means Rush is hoping our troops fail.

That is a new low, even for Rush Limbaugh.

Because All Politics Are Local

The fact that the stimulus isn’t seeing any Republican votes in the House and only three in the Senate isn’t a sign that it’s a bad bill, it’s a sign that it’s something against a far-right ideology that has plagued this country for too long. A perfect example of this is from the mouth of one of the Republican Senators supporting the bill:

"When I came back to the cloak room after coming to the agreement a week ago today," said Specter, "one of my colleagues said, 'Arlen, I'm proud of you.' My Republican colleague said, 'Arlen, I'm proud of you.' I said, 'Are you going to vote with me?' And he said, 'No, I might have a primary.' And I said, 'Well, you know very well I'm going to have a primary.'{[}]amp;quot;

What’s this mean? Well basically it shows that the Republicans are scared to death. They saw what happened last November and now their own political lives are on support, with someone ready to yank the plug.

{[}]lt;p>If you look closely at the remaining Republicans in Congress, they are from solidly red areas. That means beating a Democratic is really no big problem. After all, these areas went for McCain in the year of Obama. But when you talk primaries you open a whole new can of worms. The last thing they want to see if some conservative saying “Mr. X” voted for that huge bill of “government waste”.  That gets the neo-cons salivating, and that leads to Republicans having to spend more money to defend their seats in a primary.

Update on Don Young's Bogus Quote

Posted 2/16/07 at 7:37pm by jamie

I posted earlier today on Don Young (R-AK) using this bogus quote, which he attributed to Lincoln,  on the House floor:

Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled, or hanged

As I said - that quote was not from Lincoln, but instead a right-wing fabrication. Young's office said he would not rescind the comments since the Washington Time has used it. Well the Washington Times has now retracted the statement, but will Young? Nope - instead he still wants to keep it:

Young's spokeswoman, Meredith Kenny, said the congressman took the quote directly from The Washington Times column. "Now that he's been informed these are not the actual words of Lincoln, he will discontinue attributing the words to Lincoln. However, he continues to totally agree with the message of the statement," Kenny told The Washington Post.

This actually puts Young in a worse off position. He is now saying members of Congress should be "hanged" for doing their constitutional duty of oversight. This is almost criminal and the media is not picking up on it? Why hasn't the Republican leadership come out in opposition to one of their members calling for the murder of member of Congress?

I believe we need to push more Don Young quotes out there. Since he feels it is alright to use faux quotes, then we should follow by his example. Atrios has posted one here and I got another one:

"Allah is great and death will come to the infidels of the west!" - Congressman Don Young (R-AK)

Note to the Media - Oversight is not Payback!

Posted 1/5/07 at 4:28pm by jamie

Last night during Anderson Cooper, I finally had it. I heard the following statement for the millionth time yesterday and blew up:

Will the Democrats start investigations to get back at Republicans?

Since when is oversight, as provided by the Constitution, some sort of “payback”? This is the new meme the so-called “liberal” media is using. They are already making it sound like any investigations the Democrats launch will be strictly for payback purposes.

This is not just insulting to the Democrats, but also to the very process of our democracy. During the 90’s, the media never coined the 50+ investigations into Clinton as “payback”. Now it is?

The Iraq war has gone on longer than World War 2. To make matters even worse, the Iraq war has seen less oversight than any other war in the history of our country. Don’t the 3,000 American soldiers and countless Iraqi’s who have lost their lives in this war deserve some serious attention from our Congress? This attention should have been given time and time again, but the Republicans refused to do so. The American people realized this gross negligence by one branch of our government, and voted to change that branch. If the Democrats don’t investigate, then they will be as guilty as the Republicans of ignoring their constitutional duty.

We hear constantly of some sort of “liberal bias” in our media. Well this new meme proves that “liberal bias” is nothing more than a myth. The media has been in Iraq and reporting how horrible it is, yet they want to make it sound like some sort of high-school game of “payback” if the Democrats do about the only thing they really can – hold investigations?
