Olbermann’s Apology Shows A Problem In MSNBC

Posted 11/9/10 at 8:53am by jamie

imagesLast night Keith Olbermann issued the following statement:

A STATEMENT TO THE VIEWERS OF COUNTDOWN

by Keith Olbermann

I want to sincerely thank you for the honor of your extraordinary and ground-rattling support. Your efforts have been integral to the remedying of these recent events, and the results should remind us of the power of individuals spontaneously acting together to correct injustices great or small. I would also like to acknowledge with respect the many commentators and reporters, including those with whom my politics do not overlap, for their support.

I also wish to apologize to you viewers for having precipitated such anxiety and unnecessary drama. You should know that I mistakenly violated an inconsistently applied rule – which I previously knew nothing about – that pertains to the process by which such political contributions are approved by NBC. Certainly this mistake merited a form of public acknowledgment and/or internal warning, and an on-air discussion about the merits of limitations on such campaign contributions by all employees of news organizations. Instead, after my representative was assured that no suspension was contemplated, I was suspended without a hearing, and learned of that suspension through the media.

Olbermann To Return On Tuesday

Posted 11/8/10 at 8:23am by jamie

Talk about a short suspension:

STATEMENT REGARDING KEITH OLBERMANN - SUNDAY, NOV. 7

From Phil Griffin, President of MSNBC:
After several days of deliberation and discussion, I have determined that suspending Keith through and including Monday night's program is an appropriate punishment for his violation of our policy. We look forward to having him back on the air Tuesday night.

And it turns out this was all over something I suspected – egos:

Network sources tell Playbook that Keith Olbermann was suspended because he refused to deliver an on-camera mea culpa, which would have allowed him to continue anchoring "Countdown." Olbermann told his bosses he didn't know he was barred from making campaign contributions, although he is resisting saying that publicly. Olbermann may not hold as many cards as he thinks. He makes $7 million a year and MSNBC's prime time is not as dependent on him as it was before the addition of Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell, who make considerably less.

Seeing more details come to light makes me think that we’ll see more stories like this in the future. Olbermann’s contract is up in 2012, so I wonder if he’ll be looking to go elsewhere, or if Griffin will look to push him out, when that happens.

Wendell Potter: Nothing Stopping Insurance Cos. From Raising Rates

Posted 12/22/09 at 8:31pm by jamie

Something I have been saying all along was just repeated on Countdown by former health insurance executive Wendell Potter – there is nothing to stop insurance companies from raising rates.

The bill backers have been touting out charts and tables derived from the CBO report to highlight savings with the new reform. One thing they either don’t realize or don’t want to convey is that the CBO numbers are purely an estimate. A key variable in there will be the insurance companies “playing by the rules”.

As an example we have the 85% medical loss ratio, which states that 85% of premiums must go towards health care. Well administrative costs are considered health care, and there’s a lot of ways for the insurance companies to play with the numbers to get a higher number that what it should be.

And anyone who believes that the insurance companies will play by the rules and not try to figure out loopholes like this is sadly mistaken. I guarantee they already have lawyers and accountants figuring out exactly what they will be able to squeeze past the system, and the fact that enforcing the medical loss ratio will be an entirely new system for the government, we can expect such loopholes and backdoors to be very easy to get in right now.

But I am sure we will “fix it later” because somehow the Democrats are going to magically have a more solid majority than they do now when these problems really start to show their ugly little heads. Meanwhile we will all be forced, by law, to fork over our money to this system.

Seriously – if that is progressive then I am sorry I ever called myself one.

The Great CNN Fail Continues

Anderson Cooper visited Wolfson Children's Hos...

Anderson Cooper is seeing his ratings plummet:

The respected CNN anchor has seen his numbers slip significantly through the past year. His 10 p.m. show, "Anderson Cooper 360," has declined 62% in total viewers and 70% in adults 25-54 from November 2008, according to Nielsen figures.

Last month, in Cooper's time slot, Fox News' "On the Record" attracted an average viewership of 1.9 million while "360" averaged 672,000; repeats of MSNBC's "Countdown" and HLN's Nancy Grace show averaged 655,000 and 458,000, respectively.

But in the ad-friendly 25-54 demo, those same repeats won out over Cooper with 224,000 (MSNBC) and 214,000 (HLN).

CNN really needs to make some big changes and make them quick. Cooper is at the point that he’s getting beat by reruns. That is really sad in the news industry.

A New Battle In The GOP Civil War Emerges

Posted 11/4/09 at 7:47pm by jamie

Now we have Michael Steele taking on Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh – the true GOP leadership:

RNC Chairman Michael Steele endorsed moderate Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava (R-NY) in the NY-23 special election before national conservative leaders — like Dick Armey, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin — forced Scozzafava out in favor of right-wing candidate Doug Hoffman. Following Hoffman’s defeat, Steele struck back at firebrands within his party, telling reporters earlier today that the opinion of conservative outsiders “really doesn’t matter much”:

STEELE: If you don’t live in the district, don’t vote there, your opinion really doesn’t matter much.

Blitzer later asked about Limbaugh and Palin directly and Steele didn’t really back down much:

So should we start the countdown until Steele goes on Limbaugh’s show to apologize?

Look At These Teabaggers

Bob pointed out this picture last night:

old-guy-wingnut

To which he said:

Without insulting the guy, here's how I would describe him. He's clearly either the recipient of Veteran's Administration healthcare (note the USMC cap) or Medicare or both. Both of which are single-payer "socialized" healthcare programs run by the government. And I seriously doubt this old misguided man would ever give up his socialized healthcare.

At the same time I was watching Countdown and they were showing a clip from a townhall meeting held by Steny Hoyer, in which this guy was disrupting the meeting:

tpsh

Another senior citizen, and the woman next to him was doing the same thing – another senior citizen. These are the kinds of people that don’t want government run healthcare and thinks the government better not touch their Medicare.

Does Sarah Practice Good Judgement?

I have been looking into a story that I first heard on Countdown last night. It seems that the birth of Palin's son this year was met with a little drama.

Palin was speaking at the Republican Governors Association in April. A couple of hours before her speech she started having labor pains, I have also read mixed reports. Some say her water broke and others say she was just "leaking amniotic fluid". Palin says she called her doctor, who told her to go ahead with the speech then fly back to Alaska.

A typical flight from Dallas to Anchorage is between 5-6 hours. Palin also wasn't full term yet. I haven't been able to find out how early she was, but she knew she was having a baby with Downs Syndrome through testing.

So you have a person who is showing signs of labor and not full term yet. She goes into labor and they tell her to go about her business, which includes a lengthy flight. It really seems like Palin put herself and her baby at risk.

Most airlines have strict rules regarding flying while pregnant. I did find one article stating she flew on Alaska Airlines, which doesn't list any restrictions. The part that I find really odd is that either her fluid broke or she was leaking. Once that happens there is a risk of infection to the baby. That risk increases greatly over time, so they want to get the mother on antibiotics right away. Shouldn't Palin have at least gone to a hospital in Dallas to get checked out?

Even Bill Frist had a video camera feed when he made a diagnosis from afar. Palin's doctor only did it over the phone. Maybe the media should look a little more into this story and find out exactly what happened.

McCain = Bush! More Than You Think

Posted 7/9/08 at 1:40pm by jamie

Last night this clip showed on Countdown. It's of a 60 year old librarian who was charged with trespassing because she carried a sign that read "McCain=Bush" to a McCain town hall meeting:

She asks the question the media has been afraid to - why do the Republicans hide from the McCain=Bush analogy so much? The Republicans have given Bush their undying support over the past 7 years, and now that Bush is about gone they abandon him? Somethings not right here. Did the Republicans back the lies of George W. Bush, which have destroyed this nation, just for political convenience? Perhaps they are trying to distance McCain from Bush now for political convenience.

I also find the silence from McCain about this incident to be troubling. Removing people with opposing views from campaign rally is right out of the Bush/Rove campaign book, and it seems the McCain is adopting that. Not a good thing when you want to distance yourself from Bush.

So yes - John McCain will be a third Bush term more than you think. McCain is proving that himself.

Terrorists Protecting The Skies?

Posted 5/1/08 at 9:15am by jamie

Here is Bushed from last night's Countdown. There is plenty of outrage to be had in this episode, but I think the most should come from the government's "no-fly list", which is supposed to be used to track potential terrorists, but it also contains the names of air marshals. You know - those people who are supposed to help protect the skies. Just another example of how government does not work under Republican leadership.
