Why The Gates Arrest Matters

Posted 7/29/09 at 9:25am by jamie

I am actually glad we are still talking about the arrest of Professor Gates. Not only is the race issue being opened up, but there is much more here than people are realizing – the reach of the long arm of the law.

On the race issue, I don’t think anyone can pass judgment on Officer Crowley as to whether he did what he did out of racism or something else. It’s just too complicated of an issue to delve into the depths of people’s minds. Of course if this ends up seeing a courtroom, I think the cards might be stacked against Crowley, and that is by his own hand. In the police report Crowley stated that the 911 caller identified the men as black. The 911 tapes prove otherwise. In fact she said she thought one might be Latino. So why did Crowley put this in the report? A lot of people took that report as gospel, but somehow this key piece of evidence seems to be overlooked.

I don’t think Crowley deliberately lied on the report. I have spent countless hours writing fire and squad reports and its hard keeping all the facts straight in your mind, but if this does end up in court you can expect any lawyer Gates has to push Crowley on the issue.

Ideas For A Dying Media

I know first hand that one of the biggest costs associated with the traditional media and their online presence is the platform they currently have their websites in. These are high dollar systems that require countless hours developing.

One way the media can curb some costs, yet keep up with an ever changing world in online presence is to drop these old systems. Instead they should look at open source platforms, and the one I highly recommend is Drupal. That’s what powers this blog, as well as Crooks and Liars. You can also add the biggest name in satire news to the list of Drupal powered sites – The Onion.

Recently one of Europe’s largest media organizations just made the switch:

Pierre-Jean Duvivier, Head of WebFactory at Edipresse, shared some remarkable data points with me. Edipresse is one of Europe's biggest media and communications companies. It is a traditional print company that publishes more than 200 titles, including some leading European newspapers (i.e. Le Matin, Le Temps, and 24 heures).

Pierre-Jean told me that they converted 11 newspaper and magazine websites to Drupal in 18 months. The reason for adopting Drupal was that it is cheaper, faster, and more stable than their old content management system.

Today, some of Edipresse's biggest media properties are on a shared Drupal platform that delivers 30 million pages a month. Since they switched to Drupal, they cut their global IT cost by 75% and grew their online traffic by 220%. On average, it takes their internal Drupal team 40 days to migrate an existing newspaper site to Drupal, so I think we can expect to see more Edipress sites moving to Drupal.

I Need $80,000

Posted 1/9/08 at 10:36pm by jamie

I worked hard developing this site. I spent countless hours to bring you the new IntoxiNation - now can I have $80,000? I mean it took me about 3 hours last night and 4 hours today to get it done so $80,000 should be about right.

If you are confused, don't be. What I am talking about is the pathetic donation drive going on over at Red State. Currently they run the same platform that I do - Drupal. They need all this money to finish up development on their new system though, because Drupal is so limited and hard to use. Yeah right.

My regular readers know that I do a lot of work in Wordpress. I used to use it for this site, but decided to move to Drupal because I liked it better. I still do work on Wordpress. Just check out Firedoglake or Crooks and Liars for proof of that. I am the lone programmer for both sites. The redesign for Firedoglake took about 3 months worth of work, which was helped by a professional web designed who laid out the graphics for the new site, but all the actually coding I did. Right now I am working on a new release of Crooks and Liars that everyone will love. Me and John Amato have been working on some great surprises that people will love - I promise that.

So back to Red State. I was going to let this whole donation drive thing just slip by, but I can't stay silent any longer. Let's look at Erick's latest begging post. Here is the latest teaser image he has posted:

The Republicans Quiet Scare Tactic

Posted 10/25/06 at 7:12pm by jamie

Bush's biggest problem is he lives in the past. He doesn't realize this great new thing out there called the "internets" and exactly how powerful it is. Take for example when Bush tries to change his story and then lie about what he previously said:

Oops. Well I am sure that hasn't happened before.

Oh well I guess it has. Our President isn't just incompetent - he is a total moron. With someone this out of touch with reality and such an ambition to lie to the American people, don't we require a Congress that will exercise the Constitutional mandate of oversight? Every single American deserves it. Our forefathers deserve it. Our nation deserves it. In 13 days we can change the course in our Nation and hopefully hold Bush accountable for his (in)actions.

Traitor(s) in the White House

Posted 7/3/05 at 2:54am by jamie

On our Independence Day weekend, we are confronted with more fact that the
Bush White House is up to some not so legitimate games. Please bear with me
throughout the length of this posting, as I am going to start to assemble pieces
of the puzzle for all my readers. I will be quoting numerous articles throughout
and, as always, will be posting the appropriate links to them.

May 1, 2005 – The Publishing of the Downing Street Memo in London Times

This was the start that really put the blogosphere in high speed. The memo
was published in the London Times, and ignored by the United States mainstream
media for five weeks following. As matter of fact in recent articles regarding
the media’s ignoring of this pertinent document, they are starting to admit that
they dropped the ball.

The Downing Street Memo is an official British Document, or more so minutes,
where the head of British Intelligence, MI6, detailed a meeting in Washington
that took place in the spring of 2002. The most notorious paragraph of this
document involving the pending war in Iraq is as follows:

C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift
in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove
Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and
WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The
NSC had no patience with the UN route, and no enthusiasm for publishing
material on the Iraqi regime's record. There was little discussion in
Washington of the aftermath after military action.
