Digging Deeper Into "Voter Fraud"

Today's New York Times digs deeper into the GOP red herring:

Five years after the Bush administration began a crackdown on voter fraud, the Justice Department has turned up virtually no evidence of any organized effort to skew federal elections, according to court records and interviews.

Although Republican activists have repeatedly said fraud is so widespread that it has corrupted the political process and, possibly, cost the party election victories, about 120 people have been charged and 86 convicted as of last year.

Most of those charged have been Democrats, voting records show. Many of those charged by the Justice Department appear to have mistakenly filled out registration forms or misunderstood eligibility rules, a review of court records and interviews with prosecutors and defense lawyers show.

In Miami, an assistant United States attorney said many cases there involved what were apparently mistakes by immigrants, not fraud.

In Wisconsin, where prosecutors have lost almost twice as many cases as they won, charges were brought against voters who filled out more than one registration form and felons seemingly unaware that they were barred from voting.

One ex-convict was so unfamiliar with the rules that he provided his prison-issued identification card, stamped “Offender,” when he registered just before voting.

Just remember - this is the reason some of the U.S.As were fired. And it is funny how much they are going after Democrats on this. How about Ann Coulter? Why hasn't the Justice Department taken up her case of voting in the wrong district? Oh - because she is a GOP darling.

So Will Bush Listen To His Commanders On The Ground?

That is what he keeps saying. Now it is time to put up or shut-up:

The American-led crackdown in Baghdad has not succeeded in reducing a "disheartening" level of violence across the capital and a new approach is needed, a military spokesman said today.

Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, the senior spokesman for the American military in Iraq, said that the strategy of concentrating on a limited number of highly troubled neighborhoods had not slowed sectarian violence in the city as a whole.

General Caldwell said that attacks in the Baghdad area went up 22 percent during the first three weeks of Ramadan in comparison with the three weeks before.

The crackdown, which began in August, "has made a difference in the focus areas but has not met our overall expectations in sustaining a reduction in the level of violence," General Caldwell said, adding that American commanders were consulting with the Iraqi government on a change in plans.

How will Bush and Rumsfeld respond to this? I got a feeling it will be the typical "in one ear and out the other". They have proven time and time again that they only listen to the "troops on the ground" when the troops are saying exactly what they want to hear.

The Media's ADD Is Shining Through

John Mark Karr, Katrina, new hurricanes, Tom Cruise, and now Warren Jeffs. Wow with all that going on in the world, it is no wonder why little stories like this get buried:

Police found more than two dozen bodies across the capital Tuesday and the government said 73 people had died in fighting in the south as violence surged despite promising signs that a U.S. crackdown is curbing sectarian killings in Baghdad.

Also Tuesday, the U.S. military said three American soldiers and one marine were killed the day before: two in combat in Anbar province and two from non-hostile causes. A fourth soldier died on Tuesday in Baghdad. At least 13 American service members have died in Iraq since Sunday, according to the U.S. command.

The latest violence both inside and outside the capital occurred despite U.S. and Iraqi officials' claims that a new operation in the capital has lowered Sunni-Shiite killings there, which had risen in June and July.

Now why would the media cover anything like that?

N. Korea says won't return to nuclear talks unless USA backs down

This has the makings of a big international political argument:

TOKYO (Reuters) - North Korea will not return to six-way talks on its nuclear programme unless the United States ends its financial crackdown on Pyongyang's assets, Kyodo news agency quoted a senior North Korean official as saying.

"Under such pressure, we cannot return to the six-way talks. Our position has not changed," Kyodo quoted Ri Gun, North Korea's deputy chief envoy to the talks, as saying in New York on Tuesday following talks with U.S. officials.
