Government Regulations Saves Lives!

Posted 3/11/11 at 11:52am by jamie

Today’s earthquake is another stark reminder that government regulations do save lives:

From seawalls that line stretches of Japan’s coastline, to skyscrapers that sway to absorb earthquakes, to building codes that are among the world’s most rigorous, no country may be better prepared to withstand earthquakes than Japan.

Had any other populous country suffered the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that shook Japan on Friday, tens of thousands of people might already be counted among the dead. So far, Japan’s death toll is in the hundreds, although it is certain to rise somewhat.

Ironically, it was just over a year ago that I posted something along the same lines. That was following the Chilean earthquake, where the loss of life was minimal. In terms of regulations, Chile ranks right up there with Japan.

I really hate turning devastation, like we are seeing right now, into political debate, but this is life and death we are talking about. Every time I hear some Republican or Tea Partier talking about “government controlling our lives through regulation”, I got to wonder how dense they really are. I know I want to make sure my family is in buildings that can sustain whatever mother nature, or any other disaster, might throw its way. I don’t trust corporations to “do the right thing” and neither should you, because when you find out that they did lie, or cut a few corners, it’s usually too late.

8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Chile – Tsunami Warning Issued For The Pacific

Posted 2/27/10 at 9:57am by jamie

An earthquake 1,000 times more powerful than the one that hit Haiti a few weeks ago has hit Chile:

A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, collapsing buildings, killing at least 16 people and downing phone lines. President Michele Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe" in central Chile and said the death toll was rising.

Tsunami warnings were issued over a wide area, including South America, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Russia and many Pacific islands.

"We have had a huge earthquake, with some aftershocks," Bachelet said, appealing from an emergency response center for Chileans to remain calm. "Despite this, the system is
functioning. People should remain calm. We're doing everything we can with all the forces we have. Any information we will share immediately."

Bachelet said early reports were that 16 people had been killed, and "without a doubt, with an earthquake of this magnitude, there will be more deaths."

The Chilean President has issued a “state of catastrophe” following this. The earthquake has also spawned a tsunami and it looks like it’s heading for Hawaii:

The center estimates the first tsunami, which is a series of several waves in succession, will hit Hawaii at 11:19 a.m. Hawaii time (4 p.m. EST).

Sardina said the Hawaiian islands could expect waves of six feet (two meters) in some places. Other estimates have been higher but he could not confirm those were likely.

OOPS! Our Bad!

From the pages of "winning hearts and minds":

U.S. helicopters attacked allied Iraqi militiamen south of the capital on Saturday, killing at least nine civilians and wounding three, apparently because of a miscommunication during fighting with suspected Islamist gunmen.

An Iraqi police spokesman put the death toll at 13. Casualties included two women and a child.

In a statement released Monday, the military acknowledged that U.S. forces mistakenly targeted a checkpoint being manned by militiamen who are members of the local U.S.-allied awakening council, the name given to the predominantly Sunni Muslim groups that have joined the United States to battle militants affiliated with al Qaida in Iraq.

I bet the Iraqis want another 100 years of this also. Vote McCain!

5 More Soldiers Killed

Posted 4/30/07 at 8:46am by jamie

April has been a deadly month for our troops and this latest tally pushes the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq past 100:

Five U.S. troops were killed in separate attacks in the capital this weekend, including three in a single roadside bombing, the military said Monday, pushing the death toll past 100 in the deadliest month so far this year.

Both attacks occurred in eastern Baghdad, a predominantly Shiite area where American and Iraqi forces have stepped up their activities as part of a security crackdown that began on Feb. 14 to quell the sectarian violence.

In violence Monday, a suicide car bomber apparently targeting an Interior Ministry convoy struck an Iraqi checkpoint near a busy square in the predominantly Sunni area of Harthiyah in western Baghdad, killing four people and wounding 10, police said.

The bomber detonated his payload, causing part of the road to buckle, as he emerged from an underpass and was heading toward the checkpoint being manned by Interior Ministry commandos. Those killed included two commandos and two civilians.

Actually we have lost 103 soldiers this month, but let's not forget our coalition. When you add in the 12 U.K. soldiers and one Polish soldier all killed in Iraq this month, we get an average of 3.87 soldiers killed per day. The last time we had an average this high was in January 2005, when a helicopter crash killed 30 American soldiers. Total amount of U.S. soldiers killed in that month was 107.

November 2004 holds the record as deadliest month for American soldiers - 137.

So is this the progress we were supposed to see? Boehner's 90 days are well over now. So John - is the surge working? I will ask that more directly a little later.

When Will The Iraqis Stand Up?

Posted 4/1/07 at 8:38am by jamie

John Boehner said it would only take 60-90 days to know if the surge is working. Last week, we past that 60 day mark and are on the way to the 90 day mark. So does this article indicate success in Iraq?

The U.S. military death toll in March, the first full month of the security crackdown, was nearly twice that of the Iraqi army, which American and Iraqi officials say is taking the leading role in the latest attempt to curb violence in the capital, surrounding cities and Anbar province, according to figures compiled on Saturday.

The Associated Press count of U.S. military deaths for the month was 81, including a soldier who died from non-combat causes Friday. Figures compiled from officials in the Iraqi ministries of Defense, Health and Interior showed the Iraqi military toll was 44. The Iraqi figures showed that 165 Iraqi police were killed in March. Many of the police serve in paramilitary units.

I can only see two possibilities for this. One is that Americans are being targeted more than Iraqi military. The other is that the Iraqi army is not standing up. Either reason is unacceptable and more of a reason for our troops to come out now.

The Bushies don't seem to understand the simple concept that our troops are in the middle of a war that has been going on for over 1,000 years. True, why should they? Bush didn't even know there was a difference between Sunni and Shia when we invaded Iraq. How the hell would he know anything about the history of the region?

U.S. Lives Lost Fighting Wars Now Equal To 9/11

Posted 9/22/06 at 11:20pm by jamie

This is a very sad "milestone" to reach:

Now the death toll is 9/11 times two.

U.S. military deaths from Iraq and Afghanistan now match those of the most devastating terrorist attack in America's history, the trigger for what came next. Add casualties from chasing terrorists elsewhere in the world, and the total has passed the Sept. 11 figure.

The latest milestone for a country at war comes without commemoration. It also may well come without the precision of knowing who is the 2,973rd man or woman of arms to die in conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, or just when it happens. The terrorist attacks killed 2,973 victims in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

Not for the first time, war that was started to answer death has resulted in at least as much death for the country that was first attacked, quite apart from the higher numbers of enemy and civilians killed.

Of course the greatest contribution to this tally comes from that war of choice -Iraq. We are just 2 short of 2,700 lives lost in that failed experiment of Bush's. Just remember - if you vote for Republican's this fall, you vote to have more of our brave young men and women killed. Their lives deserve justice and we need to honor them by having Bush answer to his lies that lead this country to war.

Dead still being found six months after storm ravaged New Orleans

Posted 3/7/06 at 8:06am by Anonymous (not verified)

With all the talk recently on Katrina and the video that was released of Bush on theat conference call I felt this story appropriate. Thew comment about firefighters searching for several months until  funding ran out is well..... just disturbing. As seems the case with Bush and his administration, money is more important that people.

NEW ORLEANS, United States (AFP) - Six months after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, bodies are still being pulled out of wrecked and rotting homes.

Firefighters in hard hats with cadaver dogs found the latest victim on Monday in a house that had been inspected months ago, though clearly not well enough.

It was the second corpse found since recovery efforts resumed last Friday, said Steve Glynn, chief of special operations for the New Orleans Fire Department.

The race and gender of the body located Monday found in the black Lower Ninth Ward, could not be determined, Glynn said.

"I don't want to be too graphic," Glynn said. "But it was confusing at first."

The official door-to-door search of New Orleans ended October 3 with a death toll of 972. Since then, at least 131 more bodies have been found. Some by officials, some by horror-struck friends and family members, some even by insurance inspectors.

Firefighters continued to search homes for a few more months, but had to stop in December when their funding ran out.

Blood Bath In Iraq

Posted 1/5/06 at 3:40pm by jamie

Remember the news last week that the insurgency was "fizzling out"? Well that
point seems to now be as invalid as Cheney's "last throes" comment from last
spring.

Baghdad (Reuters) - Five U.S. soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb
hit their vehicle while on patrol in Baghdad on Thursday, the U.S. military
said.

Another two American soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb near the
southern Iraqi city of Najaf, Iraqi police said.

Police had earlier said that only two civilians were killed in the Najaf
incident.

If that is not bad enough, it is far worse for the Iraqi citizens:

KERBALA, Iraq (Reuters) - Two suicide bombers killed at least 110 people
and wounded more than 200 in the Iraqi cities of Kerbala and Ramadi on
Thursday, the second consecutive day of concerted insurgent attacks.

Another three bombs exploded in Baghdad, two of them detonated by suicide
bombers, and a roadside bomb targeted a U.S convoy near the southern Shi'ite
holy city of Najaf, destroying a Humvee and killing at least two civilians.

Coming a day after 58 people died in a wave of bombings and shootings,
the latest bloodshed appeared certain to ratchet up tension between Sunni
and Shi'ite Muslims after December's election.

[..]

In all, violence has killed more than 225 people and wounded more than
280 in the five days since the New Year started, a death toll comparable
with some of the nation's bloodiest weeks since the U.S.-led invasion in
March 2003.

Too Many Dead In Iraq

Posted 10/13/05 at 1:25am by jamie

We are rapidly approaching 2,000 soldiers lost in Bush's illegal war.

As of Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at least 1,962 members of the U.S.
military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003,
according to an Associated Press count. At least 1,528 died as a result of
hostile action, according to the military's numbers. The figures include
five military civilians.

The AP count is eight higher than the Defense Department's tally, last
updated at 10 a.m. EDT Wednesday.

The British military has reported 96 deaths; Italy, 26; Ukraine, 18;
Poland, 17; Bulgaria, 13; Spain, 11; Slovakia, three; Denmark, El Salvador,
Estonia, Thailand and the Netherlands, two each; and Hungary, Kazakhstan and
Latvia one death each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat
operations in Iraq had ended, 1,823 U.S. military members have died,
according to AP's count. That includes at least 1,419 deaths resulting from
hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

According to ICausalities, the
current death toll is at 1,964. Whatever the actual number is, one thing is for
certain - it is way to high.
