Rob Portman Supports Gay Marriage After Son Comes Out Of The Closet

Posted 3/15/13 at 11:39am by jamie

Leave it to these Republicans. They preach and preach how evil gay marriage is, but as soon as one of their own children comes out to them as being gay, they quickly change positions. The latest is Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH). Here is an interview he gave CNN to discus it:

In the interview, Portman even admits that his decision was based solely on his own child:

"I've come to the conclusion that for me, personally, I think this is something that we should allow people to do, to get married, and to have the joy and stability of marriage that I've had for over 26 years. That I want all of my children to have, including our son, who is gay," said Portman

That is a rather callous statement to make. Portman admits he never believed any other gay couple should have had the "joy and stability" of marriage, until it could have been his son.

Live On TV: Republican Senators Supporting Terrorism!

Posted 3/6/13 at 11:31pm by jamie

If you haven't heard yet, there's a good, old fashioned filibuster going on right now. The filibuster is over confirmation of John Brennan to head the CIA. It is being lead by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and other Republicans, such as Ted Cruz (R-TX) have now joined in.

The filibuster started almost 12 hours ago and is going in full force.

Now I want to take a page from the Republican playbook of the last decade. We are currently embarked in a global war on terror. At such a time we need someone to lead out main foreign intelligence agency. So why are Republicans trying to prevent that intelligence and aide terrorists?

Now do I believe that? No I don't, but it is the exact thing Republicans accused Democrats of over and over again during the Bush years.

But let's look into the reason for this filibuster. It boils down to 2 paragraphs from a response Attorney General Eric Holder gave to Rand Paul on the drone program:

“The question you have posed is therefore entirely hypothetical, unlikely to occur, and one we hope no president will ever have to confront. It is possible, I suppose, to imagine an extraordinary circumstance in which it would be necessary and appropriate under the Constitution and applicable laws of the United States for the President to authorize the military to use lethal force within the territory of the United States.”

“For example, the president could conceivably have no choice but to authorize the military to use such force if necessary to protect the homeland in the circumstances like a catastrophic attack like the ones suffered on December 7, 1941, and September 11, 2001,” Holder continued.

Fox News Would Never Hire Ex-Bush Aides

Posted 2/26/13 at 12:19pm by jamie

David Zurawik , the media critic for the Baltimore Sun, has published a post at Daily Download, in which he declares that MSNBC is now worse than Fox News in ideology. The reason? Well he says it in the first paragraph:

MSNBC has long been as bad as Fox News when it comes to ideological bias. But with the hiring of longtime Team Obama loyalists David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs, it’s official: MSNBC is worse.

Apparently Mr. Zurawik is media dumb. Allow me to try and inform him of Fox's past hires.

  • Karl Rove - Senior adviser to George Bush. Leaves White House and joins Fox News.
  • Dana Perino - Former press secretary for George Bush. Leaves White House and joins Fox News.

Then we have one that went in reverse, where the White House decided to pull it's talent from Fox News.

  • Tony Snow - Fox News personality, leaves the network to become Bush press secretary.

Then we have some other notables:

  • Liz Cheney - daughter of former vice-President, Dick Cheney. Worked in Bush's State Department. Leaves and joins Fox News.
  • Jenna Bush - Daughter of George Bush. Now Fox News Contributor.

But apparently David Zurawik has no idea who these people are, since he fails to mention any of them in his post. That, or maybe he is just another partisan hack, ignoring facts to promote his own agenda. Which ever it is, the article has gone uncorrected for over 12 hours, so we do know that he is incompetent. That's pretty bad for someone who makes a living criticizing others.

It's Another Round of "Why to Hate Hagel"!

Posted 2/18/13 at 2:54pm by jamie

Today's wingnutopia outrage of "why to hate Hagel" is brought to you buy that bow-tie wearing dweeb, Tucker Carlson's, conspiracy tabloid, The Daily Caller:

A pro-Hezbollah, pro-Hamas candidate for the Iranian presidency, a man linked to Iranian-controlled front groups, brought former Republican Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel to speak at Rutgers University in 2007, according to another professor on campus.

Hooshang Amirahmadi, who led Rutgers’ Center for Middle Eastern Studies when Hagel came to campus, is the founder and president of the American-Iranian Council. He arranged for Hagel’s speech on March 2, 2007, the faculty source told The Daily Caller.

Why that must mean that Hagel supports terrorism! Why can't we have good ole' Republicans anymore, like Dick Cheney, who would never do anything to help Iran!

Halliburton is the company that Vice President Dick Cheney used to run. He was CEO from 1995 to 2000, during which time Halliburton Products and Services set up shop in Iran. Today, it sells about $40 million a year worth of oil field services to the Iranian government.

But Cheney was just protecting capitalism by setting up offshore companies in the Cayman's so that they could circumvent sanctions against Iran in the 90's and sell them highly profitable nuclear parts.

Apparently selling parts to develop weapons of mass destruction to terrorist regimes is a sign that you are strong against terrorism. Well, at least to the pea brains of the Republican Party.

And let's not forget another Secretary of Defense and how much he opposed our former enemies:

Haggling Over Hagel

Posted 1/8/13 at 9:43am by jamie

The nomination of Chuck Hagel by President Obama to become our next Secretary of Defense has really started a firestorm. One of the most interesting reasons Republicans oppose him has to be this:

They've also lambasted positions Hagel took as a GOP senator, including his opposition to unilateral sanctions against Iran, as well as votes opposing the labeling of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.

But what about Dick Cheney? Dick Cheney not only opposed sanctions against Iran, but Halliburton, under Cheney's control. actually circumvented previous sanctions. But yet nothing was ever said by the right when it came to this.

Chuck Hagel isn't a typical Republican we are used to today. Instead he follows along the lines of more old-school Republicans, the kind I actually like. He doesn't believe that all of our answers lie within the military. He quickly became an opponent of the Iraq War after seeing how disastrously it was being fought. That right there is enough to piss off Republicans, despite their trying everything to distance themselves from the highly unpopular war.

Haley Barbour's Serious Iran Problem

Posted 3/30/12 at 12:11pm by jamie

Not even a year ago many in the Republican Party were pushing for Haley Barbour, aka Boss Hogg, to run for President. Imagine if he did and this came out:

GOP power broker Haley Barbour's lobby shop, BGR Group, represents a Russian bank that has financed a company that helped build Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant, according to corporate documents and lobbying disclosure records. The bank is owned by a secretive oligarch, Mikhail Fridman, who has met at least twice with White House officials in the last few years, according to visitor logs.

Barbour, one of the most influential Republicans within the party, considered a bid for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination and has been speculated about as a possible vice-presidential pick. Last year, he called Iran "the number one threat to peace and stability."

So while the GOP beats the war drums against Iran, one of their key players is actually helping Iran gain the reasons for such an attack. Amazing how these Republicans work.

Of course such actions are no stranger to Republicans. In the 90's, when Dick Cheney was running Halliburton and we had numerous sanctions in against Iran, Cheney's company was doing the exact same thing. It must really be a Republican thing; make money from the "enemy" and then send our children in to fight them in a war. These guys make Mr. Scrooge look like Mother Theresa.

Leading By Fear The GOP Way

Posted 2/25/12 at 7:43pm by jamie

When it comes to trying and scare the hell out of constituents the Republicans never let us down. The latest chapter of "OMG you will all die" fear mongering comes from the state that bought us one of the greatest fear mongers of all time, Dick Cheney:

State representatives on Friday advanced legislation to launch a study into what Wyoming should do in the event of a complete economic or political collapse in the United States.

House Bill 85 passed on first reading by a voice vote. It would create a state-run government continuity task force, which would study and prepare Wyoming for potential catastrophes, from disruptions in food and energy supplies to a complete meltdown of the federal government.

The task force would look at the feasibility of Wyoming issuing its own alternative currency, if needed. And House members approved an amendment Friday by state Rep. Kermit Brown, R-Laramie, to have the task force also examine conditions under which Wyoming would need to implement its own military draft, raise a standing army, and acquire strike aircraft and an aircraft carrier.

Of course Wyoming needs all the protection they can get, hence the aircraft carrier. Remember when the Bush administration was doling out homeland security money and Wyoming received over double what New York did per capita?

This is the craziness that has taken over the Republican party over the past several years. Even scarier is the number of American's who buy into this thinking. My hopes for our country's future are really diminishing with each passing day.

What We Lost 10 Years Ago Today

Posted 9/11/11 at 10:36am by jamie

The news is full of coverage of the anniversary of 9/11. You can change the channel without being reminded of what happened 10 years ago today. It was one of the most tragic days in American history and one none of us will ever forget.

And while we spend the day remembering this anniversary, let’s not lose sight of what else we lost on this day 10 years ago – America.

Since 9/11 this country has become increasingly more divided. We got a severely broken government that can’t operate due to partisan bickering. We saw the birth of this not long after the attacks 10 years ago. The Bush administration became hell bent on attacking a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, Iraq. People who disagreed with that war were called terrorists or even accused of treason. This wasn’t limited to bars or living rooms. We even heard the vice-President of the country, Dick Cheney, as well as other officials from the administration and politicians use the same harsh language against those opposed to Iraq.

That’s right – 9/11 changed America and not for the better. We became a nation where disagreeing with the President was tantamount to wanting to overthrow the government. We had a government turn to the same thinking as the Middle Eastern governments we were going after. Freedom started a quick death on that day and America is worst off because of it.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal's Possible Career Ending Interview

Posted 6/22/10 at 8:05am by jamie

This will be the dominating news story for the next week:

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan has been summoned to Washington to explain his controversial comments about colleagues in a recent interview, an Obama administration official said Tuesday.

The official says Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who has since issued an apology for his comments, has been directed to attend the monthly White House meeting on Afghanistan and Pakistan in person Wednesday rather than over a secure video teleconference, so he can discuss his comments with President Barack Obama and top Pentagon officials.

An article in this week's Rolling Stone magazine depicts McChrystal as a lone wolf on the outs with many important figures in the Obama administration and unable to persuade even some of his own soldiers that his strategy can win the war.

The Rolling Stone article isn’t out yet, but already it is drawing a lot of conversation. Here’s Marc Ambinder’s take on it:

What in the heck was Gen. Stanley McChrystal thinking? I mean, I know what he was thinking: he was tired of being the victim of what he believes is a concerted effort on behalf of Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry and others to undermine everything he was given 18 months to do. He was tired of being perceived in the press as a neoconservative killer, Dick Cheney's hired assassin, or disloyal to President Obama and his staff. He was angry at being blamed for leaking the draft of his report to the President to Bob Woodward. (He did NOT leak the document). He was miffed that a large number of mid-ranking soldiers and battalion commanders and enlisted guys didn't support his strategy.

The American Quest For A New Political Class

Posted 5/19/10 at 9:23am by jamie

Thinking about the results of yesterday’s elections, one thing sticks out to me. America isn’t really anti-incumbent, but rather anti-old school politics.

Let’s start in Kentucky. Rand Paul beat Secretary of State Trey Grayson, making him the GOP candidate for U.S. Senate. Rand Paul doesn’t have a political career like his opponent, but he did have the Tea Party behind him. But I believe there was an equal force behind Paul’s victory. Grayson got a couple kisses of death, one from minority leader Mitch McConnell and a bigger one from Dick Cheney, who is now 0-3 on endorsements.

Then we have the Democratic Senate primary between Arlen Specter and Joe Sestak. Unlike Specter and his 30 years in Senate, Sestak is a relatively new comer to the political stage, only in his third year in Congress. Pennsylvania has always been pretty much a toss-up state, they did give us Rick Santorum after all. But the interesting thing is that Sestak, a rather liberal candidate, has consistently polled much better against his Republican challenger than Specter, to the tune of about 10 points.

The Oil Spill Is Really Cheney’s Katrina

Posted 5/6/10 at 9:28am by jamie

The Republicans have been working hard to try and blame Obama for the oil spill. As I pointed out yesterday, Obama does deserve a little blame for not having booms on hand, but that blame also needs to be shared with Bush and Clinton, since none of them prepared to follow a 1994 plan on dealing with spills put out by the government.

But now we are getting more evidence that points directly to Dr. Evil himself, Dick Cheney. First the investigation into the cause of the fire is starting to zero in on Halliburton and the cementing process they had just completed. Interesting enough this same process caused a fire and spill last year in Australia and was also completed by Halliburton. That investigation is too zeroing in on the cementing process by Halliburton.

Even more interesting is the safety requirements that Cheney fought to get rid of. The problem with the oil spill has been the inability to shut the leak off. The blowout preventer has failed and there was no secondary device. Here’s an explanation by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.;

And What Is Boehner Promising The People Of His District?

Posted 5/4/10 at 11:00am by jamie

Following up on my previous post, I want to point out that Boehner’s only position I have seen so far this election cycle is one of self. All we hear him say is “I could be the next Speaker of the House”. People around here already talk about how little Boehner does for his district and now we have him giving proof of that. He expects us to vote for him so he can advance his own political agenda? I think not. It’s time for the people of OH-08 to send one of the most worthless members of Congress packing. I would take Dick Cheney as my representative over do-nothing John.

BREAKING: Air Marshals Stop Alleged Shoe Bombing

Posted 4/7/10 at 10:22pm by jamie

From ABC:

Federal air marshals subdued a man who authorities say attempted to "light his shoes on fire" on a United flight from Washington Reagan to Denver Wednesday night, federal law enforcement officials told ABC News.

Authorities say an explosive team is on the way to the airport, and that while the presence of explosives has not yet been confirmed, they believe it was an attempted "shoe bomb."

The suspect was identified by authorities as a diplomat in the Qatar embassy in Washington, Mohammed al Modadi. The FBI said the man had full diplomat immunity as the 3rd secretary and vice-consul.

Authorities said two jet fighters were scrambled from Buckley Air Force Base to accompany United flight 663, a Boeing 757, as it flew the final 40 miles to Denver where it landed safely.

Authorities said the man, identified as from Qatar, was restrained by the air marshals who were on the flight.

Coming up tomorrow – nonstop interviews with Dick Cheney.

UPDATE (10:40):

Per Pete Williams on MSNBC there is no shoe bomb. Apparently the suspect spent an extra long time in the bathroom. When he finally came out an air marshal said he smelled smoke and asked the suspect what he was doing. The suspect responded “trying to light my shoes on fire”. They now believe he was smoking a cigarette in the bathroom.

Not Bush’s War

Posted 2/16/10 at 8:08am by jamie

When you ignore Afghanistan for 7 years then you never get stories like this:

The Taliban’s top military commander was captured several days ago in Karachi, Pakistan, in a secret joint operation by Pakistani and American intelligence forces, according to American government officials.

The commander, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, is an Afghan described by American officials as the most significant Taliban figure to be detained since the American-led war in Afghanistan started more than eight years ago. He ranks second in influence only to Mullah Muhammad Omar, the Taliban’s founder and a close associate of Osama bin Laden before the Sept. 11 attacks.

Mullah Baradar has been in Pakistani custody for several days, with American and Pakistani intelligence officials both taking part in interrogations, according to the officials.

This is a great accomplishment for the military and administration, but for some reason I feel Dick Cheney will consider it a major failure.
