Terry Jones Faces $200,000 Fine For Security

Posted 9/21/10 at 9:47am by jamie

Terry Jones, Pastor - Mug It looks like Dove World Outreach Center is in for some financial turmoil:

The controversial Florida pastor who threatened to burn Korans on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is expected to be billed at least $200,000 by the city of Gainesville for costs associated with the stunt.

Pastor Terry Jones, who got international attention with his on-again, off-again plan to burn 200 copies of Islam's holiest book, said the costs would essentially bankrupt his 50-member church, the Dove World Outreach Center.

"That would be impossible for us to pay," Jones said. "That would bankrupt us, of course."

It will be interesting to see how some of Jones’ supporters on the right defend him now. Will they back Jones or the city of Gainesville? Talk about a wingnut dilemma!

The Tea Bagging Plague

Posted 10/16/09 at 10:38am by jamie

Following up on my post from the other day about the Tea Party actually hurting the GOP’s chances for picking up seats next year, we now have today’s WSJ taking a look at this very threat:

he rise of conservative "tea party" activists around the country has created a dilemma for Republicans. They are breathing life into the party's quest to regain power. But they're also waging war on some candidates hand-picked by GOP leaders as the most likely to win.

In upstate New York, Dede Scozzafava, 49 years old, is the choice of local party leaders to defend a Republican seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, an abortion-rights candidate who could appeal to independents. Doug Hoffman, 59, is a local accountant backed by tea-party activists who has jumped into the race declaring himself the real conservative.

A lot of political analysts actually predicted this. While many in Washington and the world of punditry thought the tea baggers would pose a big problem for Democrats next year, they never thought ahead enough to realize that they could actually have a real adverse effect on the GOP. Now we are starting to see this, and its the product of a lot of big Republican names backing the tea party while not really buying into it.

Cutting Off Your Nose To Spit Your Face

Perhaps that is a saying that should be echoed through the offices of the RNC and the Republican leadership. From the latest example of this practice, let’s look at the ongoing battle Michael Steele is waging with his own members in Senate:

Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME), a pro-stimulus Republican who will be up for re-election in 2012, told Roll Call that she approached Steele about his comments and asked him bluntly: "You didn't really mean that, did you?" She said that Steele has agreed to set up a meeting with the three pro-stimulus GOPers to discuss this.

Snowe pointed out that the loss of GOP moderates, and the view that they don't belong in the party, has contributed to the party's overall decrease. "When we were in the majority, there were more of us. Now that we're in the minority, there are less of us," Snowe explained, also adding: "If that's what they want to be, well that's their choice."

Snowe is referring to Steele’s threat of not giving RNC money for the re-election of the Senators who voted for the stimulus. This is the practice of “accept our entire agenda or get out” that has helped push the Republicans into their current dilemma. Sadly the RNC is also rich when it comes to egos, so they don’t see any wrong in this.

Republicans Could Loose Any Support Of Blacks and Hispanics

Posted 9/18/07 at 8:52am by jamie

And they don't care. That is obvious considering they won't attend debates held by black or Hispanic moderators. Cornell West (who I am a big fan of) has this to say about the current GOP dilemma:

The GOP debate in Baltimore at Morgan State University, led and moderated by Tavis Smiley, and currently being snubbed by the leading candidates, is a pivotal moment in this election. It is a litmus test for a Republican Party that, in the past, has run away from black voters and only selectively interacted with Hispanic citizens.

At this moment in American history, it is clear that either the Republican Party wisely embraces people of color, or it chooses to be a losing political party in the future. The courage and vision of Tavis Smiley, and his often overlooked but historic Covenant movement, has put the limelight on this dilemma of the Republican Party.

We shall see which choice the Republican Party makes in regard to people of color in particular, but most importantly to their future as a party in the American democratic experiment.

The Jefferson Dilemma

Posted 7/24/06 at 3:32pm by jamie

Well someone is out to protect someone now:

House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Sunday he may challenge a judge's order allowing FBI agents to examine documents seized at a Louisiana congressman's Capitol Hill office in a bribery probe.

Hastert said he believed Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., was ``in big trouble'' and that the House would not be joining in support of Jefferson himself. But he said the House separately might seek to make clear its position that the Justice Department cannot randomly and wantonly search lawmakers' offices.

Of  course Hastert is out to make sure he don't fall to a raid.

Actually I am mixed on this. This ruling does give the executive branch extra power over the legislative. What we need is a similar law that would allow the legislative branch to execute search warrants on the executive branch. The White House refuses to answer questions or subpoenas, yet they have this extraordinary power over the legislative? Of course these are search warrants that must be signed off by a judge, but that is rather simple.

So to sum it up - I can see Hastert's point, but I can also see the point in the side of law. If someone is suspected of breaking a law and a judge signs off for a warrant then fine, it should be executed. We however need the same to apply to the executive branch.
