The Real Warning About Palin

Posted 11/2/08 at 8:43am by jamie

This week we had another example emerge of why a V.P. Sarah Palin would be detrimental to the future of our nation.

Palin told WMAL-AM that her criticism of Obama's associations, like those with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, should not be considered negative attacks. Rather, for reporters or columnists to suggest that it is going negative may constitute an attack that threatens a candidate's free speech rights under the Constitution, Palin said.

So questioning Palin is a violation of freedom of speech. Glenn Greenwald has torn this statement apart. Perhaps Palin should read what a constitutional attorney has to say about it. Perhaps she should ask another constitutional attorney - Barack Obama.

But here is why this statement is so dangerous. If McCain/Palin wins on Tuesday there is an enormous chance that Palin could end up taking over the top office. If this is her judicial thinking, can you imagine the kind of justices she would appoint? This lady is a risk to the very fabric of our democracy - an ideologue with no understanding of the corner stone of our nation.

This statement was so bad that even a McCain spokesman had trouble spinning it:

FOX Meltdown

Posted 3/9/07 at 10:01pm by jamie

Mediabistro has the official statement from FOX on the Nevada debate:

'News organizations will want to think twice before getting involved in the Nevada Democratic Caucus which appears to be controlled by radical fringe out-of-state interest groups, not the Nevada Democratic Party. In the past, Moveon.org has said they ‘own’ the Democratic party — while most Democrats don’t agree with that, it’s clearly the case in Nevada' -- David Rhodes, VP

David Rhodes, in a single paragraph, has shown the exact reason why Democrats don't want to associate with FOX news. He is taking the same path as Roger Ailes, who continued his attack on Barack Obama last night by calling him a "terrorist".

At the same speech last night, Roger Ailes also showed how delusional he truly is:

This pressure must be resisted as it has been in the past. Any candidate for high office of either party who believes he can blacklist any news organization is making a terrible mistake about journalists. And any candidate of either party who cannot answer direct, simple, even tough questions from any journalist runs a real risk of losing the voters.

When FOX continually does partisan attacks against Democrats then why should Democrats even credit FOX as being a "news organization"? Sure Olbermann has become a spokesperson for the left, but MSNBC also has on numerous conservative shows. Now that is "fair and balanced".

While Soldiers Are Fighting and Dying

Posted 2/13/07 at 9:51pm by jamie

The House Republicans don't want to talk about the war. Their defensive play of the week is to avoid the Iraq debate going on in the House. The following is from a letter circulated by Republican leadership and obtained by Steny Hoyer:

We are writing to urge you not to debate the Democratic Iraq resolution on their terms, but rather on ours.

Democrats want to force us to focus on defending the surge, making the case that it will work and explaining why the President's new Iraq policy is different from prior efforts and therefore justified.

We urge you to instead broaden the debate to the threat posed to Americans, the world, and all "unbelievers" by radical Islamists. We would further urge you to join us in educating the American people about the views of radical Islamists and the consequences of not defeating radical Islam in Iraq.

The debate should not be about the surge or its details. This debate should not even be about the Iraq war to date, mistakes that have been made, or whether we can, or cannot, win militarily. If we let Democrats force us into a debate on the surge or the current situation in Iraq, we lose.

You can read the full letter here on Hoyer's website (PDF File).

The most disturbing part seems to be the last part ; "This debate should not even be about the Iraq war to date, mistakes that have been made, or whether we can, or cannot, win militarily". YES that is exactly what the debate should be about. The Republicans have put in writing their downfall last year. That downfall has been to "stick their heads in the sand". They continually ignored the problems in Iraq and that is why we are in the mess we are today.

Iraq Insurgency Now Financially Self Sustaining

Posted 11/26/06 at 1:57pm by jamie

The New York Times

The insurgency in Iraq is now self-sustaining financially, raising tens of millions of dollars a year from oil smuggling, kidnapping, counterfeiting, connivance by corrupt Islamic charities and other crimes that the Iraqi government and its American patrons have been largely unable to prevent, a classified United States government report has concluded.

The report, obtained by The New York Times, estimates that groups responsible for many insurgent and terrorist attacks are raising $70 million to $200 million a year from illegal activities. It says $25 million to $100 million of that comes from oil smuggling and other criminal activity involving the state-owned oil industry, aided by "corrupt and complicit" Iraqi officials.

As much as $36 million a year comes from ransoms paid for hundreds of kidnap victims, the report says. It estimates that unnamed foreign governments - previously identified by American officials as including France and Italy - paid $30 million in ransom last year.

Remember when the talking heads would try and lead you to believe the insurgency was the equivalent to farmers with pitchforks? How about when Rumsfeld said they didn't predict a robust insurgency? Now that they are self-sustaining the problems have just grown. No longer do we have the scapegoats of Syria or Iran - the problem is totally within Iraq and we have no plan to cure it. This is the product of piss-poor planning by our administration and this will be a major downfall for us in Iraq.

Why Foley Should Have Been Outed

Posted 10/13/06 at 3:15pm by jamie

I did a post last week trying to make the argument that the fact Mark Foley had to live a life of shame because he was a member of a party that would not accept his sexuality. In turn this life of shame leads down a dangerous road that can lead to the behavior that caused Foley's downfall. This is not a result of him being gay, but rather a result of the intolerance by people in our society - namely the Republican Party and Christian right.

Aravosis has found an article in today's L.A. Times by gay writer and activist Michelangelo Signorile that echoes my same thoughts:

Foley's closet wasn't just about protecting his political career. He seemed to be filled with shame. According to one gay man quoted in the Washington Post last week who challenged Foley on his voting for the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, Foley justified marginalizing gay marriage by saying, "I could never compare any relationship I have ever had to the nature of my mother and father's relationship."

For Foley, homosexuality meant second-class status.

That kind of self-loathing is bound to play out in harmful ways. Would Foley have made online sexual advances on teenagers if he were openly gay or if he'd been reported on, truthfully, by the media as a gay man long ago, and faced the consequences? It's quite possible the answer is no.

All Eyes On Condi

Posted 7/26/06 at 2:04pm by jamie

Yesterday North Korea called Condi Rice a 'imbecile'. Today, the ultra-conservative Insight Magazine is calling her incompetent and calling on Bush to replace her:

Conservative national security allies of President Bush are in revolt against Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, saying that she is incompetent and has reversed the administration’s national security and foreign policy agenda.

The conservatives, who include Newt Gingrich, Richard Perle and leading current and former members of the Pentagon and National Security Council, have urged the president to transfer Miss Rice out of the State Department and to an advisory role. They said Miss Rice, stemming from her lack of understanding of the Middle East, has misled the president on Iran and the Arab-Israeli conflict.

"The president has yet to understand that people make policy and not the other way around," a senior national security policy analyst said. "Unlike [former Secretary of State Colin] Powell, Condi is loyal to the president. She is just incompetent on most foreign policy issues."

So we have numerous that have called for Rumsfeld to be fired and now they are calling for Condi to be fired. When will these people wake up and realize it isn't just the team that needs to be fire, but rather the team and coach?

Bush doesn't care about the job Condi does. As long as she is "loyal", she can do anything. That is the only resume requirement Bush has, loyality, and that is what has been the biggest downfall of Bush. Loyalty means telling someone they are wrong when you know they are wrong, not kissing their ass 24/7. Of course Bush is to much of an idiot to even recognize that.

You Can Fire Her But That Won't Shut Her Up.

A shocking blow to our way of life was discovered last year. That was when Bunnatine Greenhouse was fired from her job as the procurement officer for the Army Corp of Engineers. While the government tries to rationalize their decision by calling it "poor performance", Mrs. Greenhouse's employee files tell a different tale.

Greenhouse was continuously commended for doing an excellent job in her tenure with the corp. So if the was the case then what made the government decide her performance was substandard all of the sudden? The only thing that changed was Greenhouse testifying to a Senate committee about the suspicious contracts Halliburton had been rewarded for reconstruction in Iraq.

This incident is a serious blow to any one who works for the U.S. government that wants to make right on some wrongs. Greenhouse was not out self promoting, she was out trying to get a serious problem corrected. Of course when the vice-President is the former CEO of Halliburton, that is just not acceptable.

The Fox In The Hen House

Posted 1/9/06 at 3:19pm by jamie

One of the most powerful committees in Congress is the House Appropriations
Committee. The chairmen of the committee must hold the highest ethical standards
because the influence of bribery and greed is so great. This is what lead to the
conviction and downfall of Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, the former committee
chairman.

So who will be a good ethical person to replace the disgraced Congressman
from California? How about Tom Delay. You might think I am joking but this is no
joke. As Delay highlighted in his speech Saturday when he announced he would not
seek to retain his position as Majority Leader:

I will continue to serve my constituents and seek re-election to a 12th
term representing Texas' 22nd district while I work to clear my name of the
baseless charges leveled against me. I will also be reclaiming my seat on
the Appropriations Committee when the second session of the 109th Congress
convenes later this month.

So the man who is already indicted for fraud, facing a highly probably
indictment in the Jack Abramoff scandal, involved in another investigation
involving bank fraud and also being looked at for possible connections in the
Duke Cunningham scandal is now going to be put in charge of this committee. Why
not release the thieves out of jail and make them all police officers? Perhaps
O.J. Simpson should hold marriage counseling classes or Michael Jackson open up
a day care.

The corruption with these Republicans will not stop even when it is being
exposed. The only way to put an end to it is by force and that force comes in
the form of votes. Vote everyone of them out of office in disgrace.

The Fall Of The 'Mayor of Capital Hill'

Posted 11/23/05 at 4:19pm by jamie

In a new article appearing in
Salon, they are
talking about the possible downfall of Rep. Bob Ney, also referred to as the
"mayor of Capital Hill". His alleged involvement in the Abramoff scandal could
signal an end to his political career. Ney is of course denying any wrong doing
and playing the victim in the whole affair:

"Any allegation that Representative Ney did anything illegal or improper
is false," announced Ney's spokesman, Brian Walsh, on Monday, in one of the
many recent releases to reporters. "It appears, unfortunately, that
Representative Ney was one of the many people defrauded."

However, most on Capital Hill see a different picture:

That's the cover story, at least. A quick look at the Congressional
Record, however, suggests the truth is a bit more damning. In fact, the
betting money in Washington sees Ney, who is known by colleagues as "the
mayor of Capitol Hill," as a pol whose days are now numbered. He may not be
the only Republican in Congress to lose his job as a result of the Abramoff
investigation, but he is likely to be first in line if congressional
indictments come down. "If Bob Ney is not nailed to the wall here, given
everything we know right now, it will be quite a surprise," says Norm
Ornstein, a congressional scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.

The Downfall of our Society Hits Home!

Posted 7/17/05 at 3:32am by jamie

So I am sitting at home, surfing the net when I decided to
check the latest headlines on ‘My Yahoo’. It is by far one of the most popular
services out there that is used in order to keep up on news and other items, as
matter of fact you can keep up to date on new posts I make here through this
free service.

One of my most favorite features of this service is the
“most emailed stories” section. It gives you a sense of what people are talking
about around the internet. It keeps track of stories by the number of people who
actually click the “email story” link in order to share it.

So as I am reading, I found the third most emailed story on
the list as something that sounded really familiar. “Rape Spurs Anti-Hispanic
Backlash in Ohio
” the headline read. Living in Ohio I had to check it out.

HAMILTON, Ohio - It started with the spray-painted,
misspelled "Rapest" on the house of a Hispanic man accused of sexually
assaulting a 9-year-old white girl. Then the house went up in flames in a
suspected arson.

That’s how the article starts. Wow I can’t believe it. I
actually don’t live in Hamilton, Ohio but I am very close, as matter of fact I
am so close all you have to do is walk out my backyard and go through the gate
in the fence and you are in Hamilton. Needless to say, this story came as no
shock since it has been the hot topic around town.

The Hopeful Downfall To CAFTA

Posted 6/12/05 at 4:43pm by jamie

The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) is finely coming under fire
by Congress. This was reported today in the

Washington Post
.

Now many people may not be aware what CAFTA is, or what the ramifications
would be if it comes into being, so I would like to give you my opinion on the
matter.

One thing we have noticed in the last couple of decades is a steady decline
in the number of manufacturing jobs in the United States. Drive through any
Midwest suburb and you will see a landscape riddled with boarded up factories
and crumbling down industries. No longer do we have the security of a factory
job that our fathers retired from.

This is also leading to the downfall of organized labor. As matter of fact it
is fading so fast that it is terrifying. The labor of this country does not have
a solid voice behind it any longer. That should scare any American worker.
People ask why the country has gotten so bad. Why do we see such things as an
increase in school shootings, increase in drug and alcohol abuse, or an increase
in poverty? Well it is simple. The day of the 40 hour work week is over. No
longer to men and women have time to be parents. Instead children are left along
longer to entertain themselves. For a middle class family to survive, both
parents must work 40+ hours a week. This not only hurts the children but the
marriage. Adults become engrossed in their careers and lose focus of the
important things such as family.

Scandals, Spin and Republicans - Oh My!!

Posted 6/7/05 at 4:04am by jamie

One of our countries darkest hours has been rekindled.
Last week we learned the secret identity of a man who led to the downfall of an
American President. Mark Felt, the former second in command of the FBI broke his
thirty year silence and exposed himself as the famous “Deep Throat”.

Ironically this comes at a time when news of scandals
amongst Republicans seems to be as common as insurgent attacks in Iraq. This is
another thorn the Republican Party does not need. As if the Republican spin
machine hasn’t been already been in high gear trying to downplay the Downing
Street Memo, and Tom Delay’s alleged ethics violations, now it must go into
overtime. The Republicans must spin harder than ever and make Americans stop
thinking about Watergate.

It is no shock that we are seeing an onslaught of Nixon
supporters. They are coming out of the wood work defending Nixon’s involvement
in the Watergate Scandal. They are even going as far as to say Mark Felt
committed a treasonous act by releasing his information to the Washington Post.

Now take into consideration the scandalous Bill Clinton.
This is a man that the Republican Party has worked hard to demonize. Bill
Clinton, while serving as President of the United States, did the unthinkable.
He had an extra marital affair in the White House. To make matters even worse he
denied it under oath, something that led to a vote of impeachment against him.

That is why we should support Nixon. After all he was
never impeached; he stood down before Congress had the chance to. And Richard
Nixon did not do anything as unthinkable as getting a blow job from an intern.
No he just participated in some late night meetings organizing the breaking into
of the opponent’s party headquarters.
