Could Congress Be Waking Up?

Posted 5/28/06 at 1:02pm by jamie

Today's New York Times looks at the battle over the search of Jefferson's office and brings up some points that are interesting:

Speaker J. Dennis Hastert is moving publicly to put his constitutional showdown with the Justice Department in the past, but many on Capitol Hill believe that the bitter confrontation will resonate in the coming months.

Lawmakers and senior officials say Mr. Hastert's determined challenge to the Justice Department's court-authorized search of a Congressional office arose as much from frustration at missteps and slights by high-level administration officials as it did from outrage over what he saw as a gross violation of Congressional turf.

He and other Republicans were already upset at the Treasury Department for what they saw as the botched handling of the Dubai ports deal. And they held John D. Negroponte, the national intelligence director, responsible for what they considered the humiliating dismissal of Porter J. Goss, the popular former House member who was forced out as director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

The F.B.I. demand for access to the Rayburn House Office Building suite of Representative William J. Jefferson, a Louisiana Democrat under investigation in a corruption case, was seen as the last straw by Republican leaders worried about holding their majority in the House in the November elections, particularly with President Bush's flagging popularity.

"We are five months away from an election, and we can't afford to make high-profile mistakes," said one senior Republican official who was granted anonymity because he did not want to be identified discussing sensitive party strains. "There is a sense of tension in the air."

Southern Republicans Message - We Have No One To Run In 08

Posted 3/12/06 at 5:44am by jamie

Out of all the Republicans in the country, the pick by the Southern Republican Convention to be the next President is (excuse me while I wipe the tears from my eyes, I have been laughing hard) Bill Frist. I got only one thing to say about that. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE (ok three things).

Frist would be a great choice to win the primary in 2008. The Democrats couldn't ask for someone better. True he very well could be in jail or facing trial by then because of his insider trading investigation, but hey, this is the kind of guy the party of corruption wants to lead this country. Maybe we could be as lucky as to have him misdiagnose the country over a monitor.

What really gets me is the fact that Frist was isolated from the GOP last week during the Dubai ports deal. While Senate Republicans wanted legislation to block the plan, Frist tried to block the Senate Republicans. Now they want him to lead this country? LISTEN UP PEOPLE. The Republicans showed even more this weekend that they do not care about national security. Frist supported the action of Bush which has caused him to become alienated by his party this week.

So there you got it. The Southern Republicans feel that a corrupt doctor that finds politics more important than the proper diagnosis of a patient and was willing to sell our ports to a country with known ties to our attackers is he best choice to lead this country. Hell I might have to register as a Republican now just so I can vote for Frist in the 08 primaries. That is a guaranteed win for the Democrats.

Congress Versus White House Show Down To Come?

Posted 3/8/06 at 3:27am by jamie

While the AP spent tonight reporting on the passing of the Patriot Act as a major victory for Republicans, the Washington Post was busy getting an article ready for tomorrow's print edition. That article talks about a House GOP effort to block the Dubai ports deal:

Efforts by the White House to hold off legislation challenging a Dubai-owned company's acquisition of operations at six major U.S. ports collapsed yesterday when House Republican leaders agreed to allow a vote next week that could kill the deal.

Appropriations Committee Chairman Jerry Lewis (R-Calif.) will attach legislation to block the deal today to a must-pass emergency spending bill funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A House vote on the measure next week will set up a direct confrontation with President Bush, who sternly vowed to veto any bill delaying or stopping Dubai Ports World's purchase of London-based Peninsular & Oriental Steamship Co

Attaching this to the Iraq and Afghanistan funding bill is an excellent move. Bush vows to veto and legislation blocking the ports deal but will he do it when it also means vetoing the funding for his wars? This will definitely set the stage for a show down between the White House and both sides of the aisle in Congress on this very important issue.

Of course tomorrow can always bring something new and I can almost hear it now. They will try to spin this into being partisan politics that is to blame on the Democrats. Not sure how yet but they will find a way.

More About Dubai

What is truly amazing on this entire Dubai ports deal is the fact that some
of the people defending the deal are the same people who have painted the entire
Arab/Muslim world as being terrorists. If we are talking about torture, wire
tapping or racial profiling then it is fine to question all of them. When we are
talking about our vital ports then we should trust them.

For those who don't believe Dubai is port of the more hardline Arab world,
Think
Progress
has a little more proof to show that they are:

The parent company of a Dubai-based firm at the center of a political
storm in the US over the purchase of American ports participates in the Arab
boycott against Israel, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

here.

True there is also the fact that Dubai is trying to quiet or media from
talking about this issue. For those unfamiliar with what I am talking about,
well it seems Dubai is trying to get CNN's Lou Dobbs to totally drop the
subject. You can view a video clip of that over at
Crooks and Liars.

As for the people trying to defend the deal by saying "they won't be in
charge of security", I have something else for you to consider. No they won't be
in charge of security or unload/loading ships. What they will be privy too is
weaknesses in our ports (and there are a lot). It just takes one "company man"
to report back to their superiors about a security risk. They could do it just
trying to highlight a problem that needs fixed. Now if the person who hears the
complaint has ties to al Qaeda then we have a problem.
