Boo Hoo - David Vitter Has To Work!

Posted 9/8/11 at 11:06pm by jamie

Harry Reid might be finally growing a pair. He did something very sneaky tonight:

The handful of Republican members who had planned on skipping President Obama’s jobs address to a joint session Thursday night might have to think again.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has scheduled a vote for Thursday to proceed on a measure related to the country’s debt – a can’t-miss vote for most members.

The timing of the vote? Right after Obama’s 7 p.m. jobs speech.

But hooker using, still Republican Senator David Vitter is having a little hissy fit over it:

Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), who had sent an e-mail to supporters Wednesday trumpeting his decision to skip the speech and host a New Orleans Saints party instead, said Thursday that he would remain in Washington for the speech and vote – but he was not pleased to be doing so.

In a second e-mail to supporters and in messages on Twitter and Facebook, Vitter accused Reid of playing politics by scheduling the debt vote for Thursday night.

Edited Video Of Michele Bachmann And The Hypocrisy Of The Right

Posted 8/30/11 at 12:18pm by jamie

The big scandal going on now is a video of Michele Bachman speaking at an event over the weekend, where it was edited to make it appear as though she said “who likes white people”. Here’s the video from Perez Hilton:

However the full video shows an entirely different statement. While the rain was pouring down, Bachmann said “who likes wet people”.

The original video was shot by Robert Stacy McCain of The Other McCain. McCain is shocked that someone would do this to his video too:

Mark Foley Supports Online Predators

Posted 6/11/11 at 8:41am by jamie

Sean Hannity decided to have disgraced former representative, Mark Foley, on his show to discuss the Anthony Weiner non-sex "scandal". Foley, who was forced to resign after sending sexually explicit messages to underage congressional pages, told Hannity that it should not be illegal to send such messages to minors (via Think Progress):

This is really amazing, especially since Foley was such a crusader on stopping child pornography.

It also shows how Fox views Weinergate. Foley was involved in extremely sexual exchanges with children under the age of 18. Not only that, these were children sent to our nation's capital to be taken care of by one of our branches of government. Foley betrayed the trust of these children and of our nation when he decided to pursue these children. And while there are reports that Weiner did engage in his naughty talk with a 17 year old, what Foley did was much worse, but not as bad as the cover-up.

Foley's activities were known about by Republicans on Capital Hill for years. Even then majority leader John Boehner and then-speaker Dennis Hassert admitted to knowing about Foley's problem at least a year before it was made public. The two most powerful members of the House of Representatives didn't want to protect the children in their charge - they wanted to protect the predator in their caucus.

Appeals Court: Warrant Needed To Get Your Email

Posted 12/15/10 at 7:57am by jamie

EmailLogoFor years law enforcement used court orders to obtain the emails of suspects. Court orders are much simpler to get than an actual warrant. Well that practice is coming to an end:

The government must obtain a court warrant to require internet service providers to turn over stored e-mail to the authorities, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.

The decision by the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was the first time an appellate court said Americans had that Fourth Amendment protection.

“The government may not compel a commercial ISP to turn over the contents of a subscriber’s e-mails without first obtaining a warrant based on probable cause” (.pdf), the appeals court ruled. The decision — one stop short of the Supreme Court — covers Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee

My favorite part of the decision:

“The Fourth Amendment must keep pace with the inexorable march of technological progress, or its guarantees will wither and perish,” the court ruled.

Unless you are George Bush.

Yes They Really Are That Dumb

idiocracy1Remember when the right thought Stephen Colbert was the real deal? They believed he was really a right wing comedian/commentator and couldn’t seem to understand that his whole routine is making fun of the right. Well those righties haven’t become any smarter since then:

Fox News' opinion website Fox Nation and their readers don't seem to know satire when they see it.

The Fox News sister site re-posted a joke from the satirical website The Onion Friday about President Barack Obama sending a 75,000-word e-mail to the the entire nation. At no point does Fox Nation note that the story is a satire.

The Onion story joked that Obama had "reached the end of [his] rope" and sent out the "rambling" stream of consciousness e-mail that addressed everything from the war in Afghanistan to his live-in mother-in-law.

At this rate the right will make the movie Idiocracy become a reality.

The GOP Continues To Show Their Deep Seeded Racism

Posted 10/20/10 at 9:01am by jamie

kkk_flag From TPM comes this email Dave Bartholomew, the chair of the Virginia Beach GOP, thought was funny enough to forward to other people:

MY DOG

I went down this morning to sign up my Dog for welfare.

At first the lady said, "Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare".

So I explained to her that my Dog is black, unemployed, lazy, can't speak English and has no frigging clue who his Daddy is.

So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify...

My Dog gets his first check Friday.

Is this a great country or what?

Bartholomew offered to resign Monday night over the email, but there are some interesting defenses coming out of other Virginia GOP higher-ups:

David Bartholomew is not a racist and agreed to resign because the e-mail had become a distraction to the Nov. 2 election, said Gary Byler, the 2nd Congressional District GOP chairman, after meeting with Bartholomew.

The e-mail was dated March 15 and sent from the address that Bartholomew uses as party chairman. Bartholomew forwarded it without reading the contents when "he was first getting familiar with the Internet," Byler said.

The ‘Timmy Did It Too’ Defense

Posted 4/1/10 at 7:44am by jamie

Well stop the presses! It turns out that the DNC did the unmentionable – they spent money!

“The DNC spent at least $2,204,000 for luxury hotels and caterers,” Heye writes at the top of the e-mail.

While the data the RNC presents is accurate — including $423,000 spent since Tim Kaine assumed the DNC chairmanship at the Mandarin Oriental Hotels and $530,000 at Hilton hotels — it does not include expenses for private planes, or for that matter strip clubs, for which the RNC has come under scrutiny.

The expenses do, however, include limousines — over which Steele, but not Kaine, has been criticized.

During the past year and half, the DNC has paid $4,464 to the limousine service Carey International, $2,861 to Arrow Limousine, $12,000 to Singh Car Service, $33,000 to Premiere Transportation, $1,998 to RMA Chauffeured Transportation and $5,481 to R&R Limousine.

The e-mail also highlights the $262,000 the DNC has spent on fundraising events under Kaine’s chairmanship.

Republicans wondering if Steele is the right man for the job should now have their answer. The fact that he would try and defend the sex club scandal rocking the RNC by saying “well Democrats spend money too” exemplifies the fact that Steele doesn’t even recognize the problem plaguing the RNC right now.

Just the fact that he is trying to compare normal party style expenses with money spent at a sex club should be enough. But it doesn’t stop there. This issue goes beyond the money and into the realm of hypocrisy. It’s not that the RNC spent $2,000 at a sex club – it’s that the RNC spent $2,000 AT A SEX CLUB. The party of family values and against anything gay spent $2,000 at a sex club that features lesbian sex imitation.

Warnings Against Viruses On Drudge Have Merits

Posted 3/23/10 at 1:11pm by jamie

A couple of weeks ago the right went crazy over this story:

The unusual e-mail sent to Senate staffers this week warning them not to visit The Drudge Report for fear of a virus has some critics crying foul, suggesting the missive is the latest attempt by Democrats to stifle dissent in the media.

The Drudge Report, a popular Web site which aggregates news links, often trumpets headlines critical of Democratic leaders. Known for getting insider news, Drudge's scoops on the primitive-looking site commonly show up in mainstream media coverage every day.

So when the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms sent out an e-mail warning those on Capitol Hill not to visit Drudge or whitepages.com because they "are responsible for the many viruses popping up throughout the Senate," conservatives objected.

"I suspect somebody was trying to make it look as if there's a virus there to discourage people from using Drudge," Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., told CNSNews.com. "Then, somehow, I guess someone in the Capitol got a hold of it and said, yes, we are advising you not to use it."

But today we get confirmation of this from a totally non-partisan source – CNET:

Malware that exploits holes in popular applications is being delivered by big ad delivery platforms including those run by Yahoo, Fox, and Google, according to Prague-based antivirus firm Avast.

Rep. Randy Neugebauer Apologizes For Yelling “Baby Killer” Last Night

Posted 3/22/10 at 2:26pm by jamie

Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) is now the guilty party when it comes to the mystery of who shouted “baby killer” on the House floor during Bart Stupak’s speech.

“Last night was the climax of weeks and months of debate on a health care bill that my constituents fear and do not support,” Neugebauer said in a news release. “In the heat and emotion of the debate, I exclaimed the phrase ‘it’s a baby killer’ in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership. While I remain heartbroken over the passage of this bill and the tragic consequences it will have for the unborn, I deeply regret that my actions were mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself.”

Well OK, maybe not so much an apology to the people, but he says he apologized to Stupak and his colleagues:

“I have apologized to Mr. Stupak and also apologize to my colleagues for the manner in which I expressed my disappointment about the bill,” he said in a statement. “The House Chamber is a place of decorum and respect. The timing and tone of my comment last night was inappropriate."

These kind of outbursts are starting to become a little too common with the GOP. For this to happen just hours after the House GOP leadership tells their caucus to act like adults leaves on wondering what kind of control the leadership really has.

Wall Street Ready To Fight The Bank Tax

Posted 1/18/10 at 8:30am by jamie

Now that the American people have bailed out the banking system and our leaders are looking at ways to recoup the hundreds of billions of tax dollars we have spent, Wall Street is starting to look at ways to get out of paying us back.

According to an article in today’s New York Times, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, which is the main lobbying arm of Wall Street, sent a e-mail to the heads of Wall Street’s legal departments last week saying that the tax may be unconstitutional since it would single out big banks. They have also hired Carter G. Phillips of Sidley Austin, an attorney who is no stranger to the Supreme Court, to review the proposal and determine if it could be considered unconstitutional.

When introducing this proposal last week, President Obama sent a warning shot to Wall Street, saying: “Instead of sending a phalanx of lobbyists to fight this proposal or employing an army of lawyers and accountants to help evade the fee, I suggest you might want to consider simply meeting your responsibilities.” Now it seems like Wall Street isn’t intent on doing that and instead wants to fight their responsibilities.

This becomes another gloomy chapter in corporate America’s milking of the people. They stood with their hands out when is was time to pass out money from the stimulus, but now that the government wants to take action to recoup costs and maybe prevent further failures, Wall Street is turning their noses at us. You can just hear Gordon Gecko muttering those famous words: “greed is good.”

OFA Feeling The Backlash

Posted 12/18/09 at 5:49pm by jamie

Obama’s grass roots organization is starting to really feel the heat on health care reform:

On Wednesday morning, Organizing for America, as Obama’s reconstituted campaign organization is now known, e-mailed its list of 13 million Obama supporters asking them to “call your senators now and help us ‘ring in reform.’”

The campaign yielded 150,000 calls — less than half the number of a similar effort in October — and it prompted a backlash among online and local activists who had logged countless volunteer supporting Obama’s campaign and legislative agenda, but who felt betrayed by recent Democratic concessions in the health-care reform fight.

[SNIP]

But there’s plenty of unhappiness. One leading OFA volunteer in Florida blasted an e-mail to a statewide listserv urging activists to “just say no” to the phone-banking effort — uncorking a torrent of frustration from Florida Democrats — while some OFA subscribers replied directly to the call-to-action e-mail with angry messages and others asked to be removed from the list entirely.

Still others said they would indeed call their senators — but would urge them to oppose the bill. And the liberal blogosphere registered its dissatisfaction with the call to action, with one prominent blogger on MyDD predicting that “Organizing for America will get a rude awakening when they try to round up canvassers and phone bankers.”

This Is News?

Posted 10/21/09 at 1:18pm by jamie

drkseye Really – is Drudge that hard up for news that this is his top headline?

Sebelius had a basal cell carcinoma removed from her forehead on Tuesday during a successful standard outpatient procedure, according to HHS spokeswoman Jenny Backus.

"She is back fighting to get everyone the same good health care she has," Backus said in an e-mail.

Nothing is wrong with her eye and it only appears puffy because of the effects of the procedure to remove the skin cells from her forehead.

Something rather minor if you ask me. Its not like Cheney and his constant visits to the hospital. So what do you think the message that Drudge is trying to push?

The Latest Email Scam – Using Soldiers

Posted 10/12/09 at 11:00am by jamie

I have been receiving a lot of these lately. It’s just another scam going around like those Nigerian bank scams, but this time it’s taken a turn for the worse by using soldiers:

We managed to move funds belonging to Saddam Hussein? family. The total amount is US$25 Million dollars in cash, mostly 100 dollar bills. We want to move this money to you, so that you may invest it for us and keep our share for banking.

We will take 70%, my partner and I. You take the other 30%. No strings attached, just help us move it out of Iraq, Iraq is a war zone. We plan on using diplomatic courier and shipping the money out in one large silver box, using diplomatic immunity. If you are interested I will send you the full details, my job is to find a good partner that we can trust and that will assist us. The link is fine to click. It is actually about a stash of money found in Iraq and the article is from 2003 and plays into the scam quiet well.

Has anyone else been receiving these? If so please share in the comments.

Glad I Didn’t Buy A Kindle

Posted 7/18/09 at 8:26am by jamie

When Amazon first started selling their Kindles I started thinking of all kinds of problems this could present. Being in the tech field, I tend to do that a lot. Some of my thoughts were things like not being able to share a book with a friend, or losing the chance to float in the pool on a hot summer day and get lost in a book (dropping a $3.00 paperback is a hell of a lot better than dropping a $300 electronic device). Another thing I thought about was giving control of my own library to someone else, and those repercussions are now being felt:

In a move that angered customers and generated waves of online pique, Amazon remotely deleted some digital editions of the books from the Kindle devices of readers who had bought them.

An Amazon spokesman, Drew Herdener, said in an e-mail message that the books were added to the Kindle store by a company that did not have rights to them, using a self-service function. “When we were notified of this by the rights holder, we removed the illegal copies from our systems and from customers’ devices, and refunded customers,” he said.

And in the biggest irony of them all the books deleted were 1984 and Animal Farm. Funny how Orwell talks about “big brother” in 1984, then his book falls victim to that very same nemesis.

Impersonating God

Posted 6/30/09 at 12:48pm by jamie

I’m not a religious person, but I got a funny feeling this is a pretty major sin:

When Trig was born, Palin wrote an e-mail letter to friends and relatives, describing the belated news of her pregnancy and detailing Trig’s condition; she wrote the e-mail not in her own name but in God’s, and signed it “Trig’s Creator, Your Heavenly Father.”

Even if it isn’t a sin, its at least chalked up to “creepy as hell”. This is the star of the GOP for 2012 and what little we really do know about her is something that could work its way into an M. Night Shyamalan flick.
