BREAKING: Rep. John Murtha Has Passed

Posted 2/8/10 at 2:51pm by jamie

Here’s the press release from his office:

Congressman John P. Murtha (PA-12) passed away peacefully this afternoon at 1:18 p.m. at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA. At his bedside was his family.

Murtha, 77, was Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.

First elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in February of 1974, Murtha dedicated his life to serving his country both in the military and in the halls of Congress. A former Marine, he became the first Vietnam War combat Veteran elected to the U.S. Congress.

This past Saturday, February 6, 2010, Murtha became Pennsylvania's longest serving Member of Congress.

Gates To Remain As SecDef

Robert Gates at Senate Armed Servic Com 2 6 08 No big surprise here:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has agreed to stay on under President-elect Barack Obama, according to officials in both parties. Obama plans to announce a national-security team early next week that includes Gates at the Pentagon and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) as secretary of state, officials said.

Retired Marine Gen. James Jones, former Marine commandant and commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Europe, will be named national security adviser, the officials said.

I think it’s a good move. Keeping someone around who might know where the bodies are buried can be beneficial.

The Real Maverick

Posted 3/1/08 at 9:48am by jamie

I love how everyone always refers to McCain as a "maverick". Is aligning himself with the GOP on a majority of issues a maverick?

Today's Washington Post gives us the answer, by the family the term Maverick was branded for:

Arizona Sen. John McCain happily donned the "maverick" mantle in 2000 as he climbed aboard the Straight Talk Express and set off on his quest for the presidency. And he's still wearing it today, if a nappier version, as he rides into Tuesday's Texas primary as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

A bad fit, claimed my old friend Maury -- a Maverick by birthright and a maverick by inclination.

A San Antonio human rights lawyer and former state legislator who wrote a fervidly liberal newspaper column almost until the day he died in 2003 at 82, Maury Maverick Jr. considered himself a zealot for freedom. He was proud that his family had bequeathed its name to the vernacular, but he could be downright cantankerous about what he considered the illegitimate use of the eponym.

Just as not every cola is a Coke and not every tissue is a Kleenex, not every nonconformist is a maverick, the last of the maverick Mavericks insisted. As a former Marine who served in the Pacific during World War II, he saluted McCain's military service and his bravery during years of captivity. But Maury insisted that any conservative Republican, by definition, adhered too closely to the status quo to deserve the hallowed label.

Punishment For A Uniform

Posted 6/5/07 at 11:15am by jamie

The Marines have picked an interesting route in the case of anti-war activist Adam Kokesh:

A military panel recommended that an Iraq war veteran who wore his uniform during an anti-war protest should lose his honorable discharge status, brushing away his claims that he was exercising his right to free speech.

Marine Cpl. Adam Kokesh, a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, argued that he did nothing wrong by participating in the March protest in Washington, D.C., because he removed his name tag and military emblems from his uniform.

After a daylong hearing Monday, a three-person Marine board recommended he receive a general discharge under honorable conditions, one step below an honorable discharge. It would let Kokesh keep all of his benefits.

"What that means is he is not dishonorable, and he's only kind of honorable, so in effect, the board picked the safe route," said Kokesh's attorney, Mike Lebowitz.

"This is a nonpunitive discharge," said Col. Patrick McCarthy, chief of staff for the mobilization command. "The most stringent discharge that could have been received is other than honorable, and the board chose to raise that up to a general discharge."

I am going to take a different approach on this then people on both side of the argument have taken. This is a rule and law, so fine, punish him for it. I just expect to see the same punishment be handed down to any former Marine who may show up at a pro-war gathering in uniform. If that is not the case then the Marines are guilty of practicing politics.

Jim Webb - A Real Man In Washington!

Posted 11/29/06 at 4:43pm by jamie

It is good to see a politician with such honesty:

President Bush has pledged to work with the new Democratic majorities in Congress, but he has already gotten off on the wrong foot with Jim Webb, whose surprise victory over Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) tipped the Senate to the Democrats.

Webb, a decorated former Marine officer, hammered Allen and Bush over the unpopular war in Iraq while wearing his son’s old combat boots on the campaign trail. It seems the president may have some lingering resentment.

At a private reception held at the White House with newly elected lawmakers shortly after the election, Bush asked Webb how his son, a Marine lance corporal serving in Iraq, was doing.

Webb responded that he really wanted to see his son brought back home, said a person who heard about the exchange from Webb.

“I didn’t ask you that, I asked how he’s doing,” Bush retorted, according to the source.

Webb confessed that he was so angered by this that he was tempted to slug the commander-in-chief, reported the source, but of course didn’t. It’s safe to say, however, that Bush and Webb won’t be taking any overseas trips together anytime soon.

(emphasis mine)

I am glad Webb didn't slug Bush, but it is good to finally see someone stand up in this way to Bush. Republicans had no problem taking shots at Clinton, one right after the other, but when it comes to Bush, we are supposed to treat him like some delicate little flower? Fuck that. Bush decided he wanted to play big boy and become a President. He decided he wanted the super-sized game of being a war time President. Now he needs to man-up and start facing the criticism he so deserves. Jim Webb has a son serving this country and has a right to ask questions. Bush has daughters who should be serving in Iraq, but instead are out partying and embarrassing us in other countries.

Get Over It Bush Backers - Murtha Was Right!

Posted 5/19/06 at 1:24pm by jamie

Since John Murtha became outspoken against the Iraq War last fall, conservatives could not wait to "swift boat" him. Now we are finding out one of the examples he used as a problem in Iraq is in fact true:

US lawmaker and former Marine colonel accused US Marines of killing innocent Iraqi civilians after a Marine comrade had been killed by a roadside bomb.

"Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood," John Murtha told reporters. The November 19 incident occurred in Haditha, Iraq.

"There was no firefight" that led to the shootings at close range, the Vietnam war veteran said, denying early official accounts, which said that a roadside bomb had killed the Iraqis.

"There were no (roadside bombs) that killed these innocent people," he said.

Time magazine reported the shootings on March 27, based on an Iraqi human rights group and locals, who said that 15 unarmed Iraqis died, including women and children, when Marines barged into their home throwing grenades and shooting.

"It's much worse than reported in Time magazine," Murtha said.

At least three Marine officers are under official investigation, and no report has been released, Army Times said Tuesday.

Now this story came out two days ago. When it was released, I posted it as a news item but decided to hold off on blogging about it because I wanted to give the right wing blogs a couple of days to comment on it. To my shock (not really), the right has been relatively quiet on this story. I found one diary on RedState that addressed it (somewhat):

When Generals Speak The Truth

Posted 4/2/06 at 11:00pm by jamie

The former head of US Central Command had some great things to tell Tim Russert this morning. Now if anyone will listen it will be a first: (Video and transcript available at Think Progress)

Zinni, who headed the US Central Command from 1997 to 2000, was asked if anyone should lose their job over how Washington has managed its Iraq policy.

"Secretary of defense to begin with," he told NBC's "Meet the Press" program.

"Integrity and getting on with the mission and doing it right is more important than loyalty. Both are great traits, but integrity, honesty and performance and competence have to outweigh, in this business, loyalty," the former Marine Corps general said.

Zinni also had something to say about the claims that the media is exaggerating the stories in Iraq (via Think Progress):

RUSSERT: Do you believe the American media is distorting the news from Iraq or presenting an accurate picture?

The Bashing Of War Heroes And War Critics

Posted 1/14/06 at 3:20pm by jamie

The swift boating of John Murtha is now going full force as we learn in
today's Washington Post:

Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.), the former Marine who is an outspoken critic
of the war in Iraq, has become the latest Democrat to have his Vietnam War
decorations questioned.

In a tactic reminiscent of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth assault on
Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) during the 2004 presidential campaign, a
conservative Web site yesterday quoted Murtha opponents as questioning the
circumstances surrounding the awarding of his two Purple Hearts.

David Thibault, editor in chief of the Cybercast News Service, said the
issue of Murtha's medals from 1967 is relevant now "because the congressman
has really put himself in the forefront of the antiwar movement." Thibault
said: "He has been placed by the Democratic Party and antiwar activists as a
spokesman against the war above reproach."

Cindy Abram, a spokeswoman for Murtha, said, "We certainly believe that
the questions being raised are an attempt to distract attention from what's
happening in Iraq." As for how Murtha won the Purple Hearts, she said: "We
think the congressman's record is clear. We have the documentation, the
paperwork that proves that he earned them, and that he is entitled to wear
them proudly."

Cybercast is part of the conservative Media Research Center, run by L.
Brent Bozell III, who accused some in the media of ignoring the Swift Boat
charges, but Thibault said it operates independently. He said the unit,
formerly called the Conservative News Service, averages 110,000 readers,
mainly conservative, and provides material for other Web sites such as
GOPUSA. "We won't run anything against anybody if we don't have the goods,"
he said

HASTERT: Our Troops Only Get 1 Hour of our Time

Posted 11/18/05 at 10:28pm by jamie

The Republicans are pulling a strictly political stunt tonight in order to
try and insult the Democrats. At approximately 7:00 tonight, they will be
holding a vote on a plan to pull troops out of Iraq. The full resolution, which
can be viewed at Raw Story, is very simple compared to that offered by Rep.
Murtha.

RESOLUTION

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the deployment
of United States forces in Iraq be terminated immediately.

resolved,
That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that the deployment of United States forces in Iraq be terminated
immediately.

This Republican resolution does not call for the phased pull out over six
months nor does it allow for a security force to be stationed in the region
should Iraq need help. Instead, the Republicans are forcing a pure cut and run
resolution vote so that if Democrats vote against it then they can use it is
political ammunition,

It is sad who this has transpired. The Iraq war is a serious debate that
should be taken up by Congress. The Murtha plan was authored by a former marine
with an excellent service record. Furthermore, it was authored only after he
returned from Iraq and saw first hand what was happening there.

Republicans continue to make assertions that the Democrats do not have plans
yet now that a plan is on the table, Republican's answer by this charade. This
resolution will have a limit of one hour of debate. That is all Dennis Hastert
is willing to give to our country, our soldiers and the people of Iraq - one
hour. Dennis Hastert is also a chickenhawk who chose not to put the uniform on
and defend this country but instead wants to attack those who did.
